The Encounter With Peter Close Encounters With Jesus – 5 May 17/18, 2014 Pastor Michael Rochelle “So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’ Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep.’ The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.’ Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, ‘Follow me!’” John 21:11-19 (NIV)

1. The ESSENTIAL Background Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. John 1:40-42 (NIV) Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.’” Luke 5:10 (NIV) But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’” Mark 14:31 (NIV)

2. The EVIDENT Question ”When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these.’” John 21:15 (NIV) “But Peter declared, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’” Matthew 26:35 (NIV) “Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’” Matthew 26:74 (NIV) “A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 (NIV)

3. The EAGER Answer “’Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’” John 21:15b (NIV)

4. The EVIDENCE Required “Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’” John 21:15c (NIV) “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.” Acts 2:42-43 (NIV)
