BETHESDA, MARYLAND the life at the White House, a question and answer sheet about the President, an autographed picture, and a letter from the President thanking us for writing him and encouraging us to work hard in school. 42 The eighth grade class combined a love of sports and a history lesson in Civil Rights when they attended a private screening of the movie 42. The movie is based on the truelife experiences of Jackie Robinson as he became the first African American in modern times to play Major League Baseball. Students watched as he confronted segregation, racial discrimination, and hatred with talent and character, eventually winning over his teammates and earning a nation’s respect. They previewed the movie on its opening day, and noticed on April 15 that all baseball players wore number 42 in remembrance of the first day Jackie Robinson played first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. CHILDREN’S RAFFLE On April 17, the Children’s Raffle was held in support of the De Chantal Dash. The raffle featured tons of super prizes, coordinated by Missy Carr, Margaret Valaik, and Jane McDermitt. There was something fun for every age. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade purchased tickets in advance, which they placed in bags at their selected toys, games, fashion items, and gift cards, in hopes of winning. Tickets were drawn and prizes were delivered to the lucky students by the end of the day. While proceeds will go towards tuition assistance and school security, the students just had fun!

STEWARDSHIP In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples —and us—a new commandment: “Love one another.” Good stewards who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this commandment. (See John 13:34) PARISH SUPPORT

Easter Reflection from Faith That Transforms Us: Reflections on the Creed by Donald Cardinal Wuerl for the Fifth Sunday of Easter—April 28, 2013—from Chapter 9: One Body in Christ “I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.” How do you view your spiritual life, and how does it relate to what you do all day, every day of the week? Our religion is not something relegated to Sunday worship. It is pervasive, and we need to cultivate a continual awareness of God’s presence and action in us and through us. Some people feel dissatisfied or frustrated because their workdays seem drab compared to their times of prayer. A deeper understanding of our baptism, however, can transform our workdays themselves into acts of prayer. A traditional Catholic way of doing this is by reciting a prayer, or “Morning Offering,” when we wake up. There are many different forms for such prayer. This version was popular when I was a child, and has remained so: O my God, I offer you all of my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day, for your greater honor and glory, in reparation for my sins, in thanksgiving for all you have given me, for the intentions of my family and friends, and in particular for the intentions of our Holy Father. Amen. Through the grace of our baptism, we are transforming the world around us. However, we tend to forget this fact as we go about our everyday business and ordinary life. Yet we are the ones who offer the world to God. We do it in Christ because we have been baptized into his life. It is good for us to bring this amazing truth to mind at the beginning of each day, even if we are still groggy with sleep, and then renew our offering through the day, whenever we think of it or whenever we need a reminder or need a boost.

LITURGY OF THE WORD May 5, 2013 First Reading Acts 15:1-2, 22-29 Second Reading Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23 Gospel John 14:23-29

Never let yourselves be discouraged by evil! For this you will need the help of prayer and the consolation that is born from an intimate friendship with Christ. Only in this way, living the experience of God's love and radiating Gospel fellowship, will you be able to be the builders of a better world, genuine peaceful and peacemaking men and women. Address of John Paul II to young people in Madrid, Spain, May 3, 2003.
