network The General Conference of the United Methodist Church met in May in Portland, Oregon. General Conference is a body of worldwide elected delegates who meet every four years to represent our denomination. Their decisions are vital to the life of our Church. Only General Conference can revise UM Book of Discipline, which is the official “voice” of United Methodism. They may not revise our doctrine, but they may revise our positions on various issues of relevance to the Church. In the much-anticipated matter of human sexuality, specifically our position on homosexuality, the GC punted. Our position since 1972 has been that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Since 1972, additional statements have been added which deny “self-avowed, practicing” homosexual persons the right of ordination and which prohibit ordained clergy from officiating at same-sex unions or marriages. Every four years these matters are hotly debated and threaten to bring schism to our Church, for this is a subject in which we are not of one mind. There are God-loving, Bible-believing, Jesus-following people on both sides; that is, (1) the side of retaining our present language and position(s), and (2) the side of changing our language and position(s) in favor of a more inclusive stance. This time around, the General Conference accepted a proposal from our Council of Bishops to defer any further consideration in favor of a Commission to study the matter and possibly convene a called General Conference in a couple of years to consider the Commission’s recommendations. “We accept our role as spiritual leaders to lead The United Methodist Church in a ‘pause for prayer’ – to step back from attempts at legislative solutions and to intentionally seek God’s will for the future,” said Council of Bishops president Bishop Bruce Ough. In considering how best to speak my feelings and position, I have decided this summer to write a “position paper,” which, when published, I will make available for all. I will also conduct a short-term class, in which I will share my beliefs and the rationale for them, and invite discussion and conversation. My position is neither “conservative” nor “liberal.” It is one that allows pastors, members, and congregations the freedom to follow the dictates of their own conscience while maintaining our unity in Christ. I will look forward to writing this paper and sharing it with you. Meanwhile, may we move forward as a united congregation and a united denomination. We have a grand denominational mission statement: “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” We have an equally grand local church mission statement: “to reach others for Jesus, teach others his ways, and love the world for which Jesus died, so that God is glorified through his Son.” Milton Lewis Senior Pastor

Periodically all four UMW circles meet together. On February 18th this unit meeting took place at the Naco Pass Ministry Center. For this chilly day travelers were offered doughnuts and hot chocolate. Prayer requests were acted upon and also safeguarded for the first time in a special wooden box for continued prayer later on. Sue Bohlen prepared bookmarks featuring scripture from Jer. 29:11. At least 100 people were served and approximately 24 church members took part. In partnership with Wesley Health and Wellness Center, Northern Hills hosts one of their monthly rummage sales each year. At the end of the day we were pleased to discover that the proceeds were 40% greater than usual. We have good stuff! Thank you for your generous donations. Please contact Diana Poerner [email protected] if you would like to contribute to this worthy cause. During the first four months of 2016 the NH Food Pantry served 408 families for a total of 1722 individuals. This is a 12% increase over 2015. We have over 25 volunteers who alternate working in teams of three on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. screening, checking in clients and distributing groceries. We have another team of 8 men who alternate picking up our orders from the SAFB on the second and fourth Friday of each month. As the school year comes to an end, we will see an even greater increase in clients whose children normally receive breakfast and lunch at school. In order to supplement this need, we will be placing bins in front of the Sanctuary and Worship Center on the first Sunday of June, July and August for our End of School Food Drive. Items needed are: cereal, breakfast/granola bars, fruit juice, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, canned spaghetti/ravioli, soup, canned fruit, and snack crackers. If you own a pickup, can lift at least 50 lbs. and can spare about two hours on a Friday morning, we are in need of more drivers to pick up orders from the SAFB. Or if you would like to volunteer in the food pantry, just let us know. We’d love to have you on our team and help us serve those in need and spread the love of Christ in our community. David Slager came to do the repair I had requested from the church and came back later on his own to do some extra needed repair as well. He did an amazing job and was a blessing to me and my family. As a widow, I would like to thank the Great Event and David with a big email hug! God bless our church and David. Maxine Webber

Ministry Center “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) Every day God opens doors of opportunity that we can use to honor and glorify him in some way. The Ministry Center is an example of how our congregation has chosen to honor and glorify the Lord by doing something that as Pastor Milton said “is totally about other people . . . with no vested interest other than to serve God and extend his witness and his kingdom out into our Judea”. Our Lord is opening doors that are enabling us to witness and connect with the community in ways that are amazing! One of the first initiatives for the Ministry Center was to connect with the mobile community (those using public transportation) through monthly events held at the center. These events helped us establish our presence in the area and learn about the needs of this community. They also gave us opportunities to minister to many of our brothers and sisters who ride the bus. Another initiative that continues to be a true blessing is the weekly prayer service. Every Friday morning members of our congregation meet at the Ministry Center to serve coffee and donuts and pray with the mobile community. As we have been serving, we have developed friendships and many of our new friends are looking forward to the opening of the Ministry Center. Visitors who once came by just for coffee and donuts have now become our friends and come for prayer and to pray for us. The Holy Spirit is at work!

As we move into our next phase of connecting with the community, God is opening doors that will enable us to build relationships with the residents and businesses in the area. Some of the opportunities include hosting community events at several apartment complexes in the area, serving the community by partnering with other charitable organizations, expanding our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at San Antonio Public Library and also into businesses within the community. The Holy Spirit is working and giving us opportunities to let our light shine so that we can glorify our Father in heaven! Beginning in June we will focus on connecting with residents in the community though a series of “Good Neighbor Events”. These events will show how The Ministry Center is like a good new neighbor who is willing to get involved and support the community. If you would like to help, we are forming volunteer teams for:  Hospitality (food preparation and serving)  ESL teachers for evening classes  Good Neighbor Projects (clean up and beautification, carpentry, graffiti removal, etc.)  Music Team (vocal / instrumental)  Children’s activities (reading, storytelling, puppet ministry)  Prayer Teams Please send an email to [email protected] or stop by the office to sign-up. Let your light shine by volunteering at The Ministry Center. Blessings, Pastor Abdon

La Roca Roca—Reaching a New Level! “… I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15 Think of one of your best friends. How does that friendship make you feel? Friendship is one of the most powerful treasures that we can receive. Jesus called his disciples friends when they moved from just participating in events together, to establishing a relationship and nurturing this care and love for each other. As a friend, you influence each other’s lives. The relationship that NHUMC has with the Hispanic community in the area has recently reached the level of friendship. For a while, we were the church on 1604 who served the neighborhood through the Day School. Then we became the “English school for adults” in the church and in the elementary schools. However, this changed at one of our last ESL classes at one of the elementary schools. When all the volunteers arrived to the very last class, they were greeted by a surprise party from the students. Each time that a volunteer arrived at the door, all the students clapped and stood up to greet the volunteer. Then, the students shared some words of gratitude (in English!!!) to the volunteers for their work. After that, they offered a meal with the best food of their country and gave a handmade gift to every one of the teacher/volunteers. When I saw this, I thought, “God gave the grace to this group to move from strangers to FRIENDS.” Our lives have been changed and their lives too by our interaction and relationship. Many times at the end of the class, I saw the volunteers and the students embracing each other - sometimes with a smile to celebrate good news of their families, other times with a prayer request. Sometimes they were simply saying thank you for taking the time to invest in us. At the end of each class, our volunteers always said, “I’m looking forward to seeing you next week!”

Blessing of the Bikes 2016

I pray that we will embrace the role that God is giving us in this community: The church that is their friend. Through this, may we learn from our Lord together so that we become a source of hope for this world.

Bendiciones de Dios, Pastor Lupina Thanks to all who made this a successful outreach!
