XX Lenten Worship

The Gift of Music It is a great privilege to have Joel Raney with us today as we sing his brand new anthem Hymn of Grateful Praise. The dedication line on the front page of the music reads: Commissioned for Southwood Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Nebraska, in loving memory of Esther Schuster Rabel by her children in celebration of her love of music and the family’s tradition of singing praises to God.”

The Rabel family asked Joel to include the hymns Holy, Holy, Holy and Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow (Doxology). These two hymns have special meaning to the family: After Mom passed away, it made sense to honor her through the gift of music as she loved all things musical. When Esther was growing up, it was the Schuster family tradition to sing the doxology before holiday dinners. As we grew older and started our own families, we’ve continued the tradition. Singing the doxology brings a very special sense of community now to all the children and grandchildren as we realize what a great tradition Mom shared with us. When Pastor Michael asked Mom if she had a favorite hymn, she simply replied, “All of them.” Our dad, on the other hand, had a definite favorite, Holy Holy Holy. It was the one song you could count on Dad singing out loud and strong (and pretty much on pitch). We thought combining these two hymns in one anthem would be a really meaningful and lasting way to honor both of our parents.

—Dean Rabel, Lloyd Rabel, Patty Roseland, Cherie Stadler, Diane Raasch

P.S. We consider Joel Raney’s addition of “For the Beauty of the Earth” to this arrangement a divine, happy accident—it happens to be the song we sang at our Grandma Schuster’s funeral.
