THE GIFT OF TEACHER Ephesians 4:11

INTRODUCTION: 1.

A teacher is an interpreter of scripture.

2.

Ephesians 4:11 refers to the office of a teacher, one who establishes doctrine for the larger body.

3.

Elders in a church have responsibility for teaching in the local church. a. I Timothy 5:17, “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.” b. Doctrine is a noun that means teaching.

4.

Teachers must give themselves to teaching. Romans 12:7

5.

Teachers must know the Word of God. II Timothy 3:16-17

6.

Let’s look at the teaching gift.

BODY: I.

NEW TESTAMENT TEACHERS A.

Apollos 1.

Acts 18:24-28, “Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.”

I Corinthians 3:4-6, “For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” a. They were carnal. b. Paul planted = evangelized Apollas watered = taught

His teaching was recommended. a. Acts 18:27, “And when he [Apollos] desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him…” b. Acts 18: 27-28, “...and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.” (Most of Corinth’s believers were from a Gentile background)

APPLICATION: 1.

A teacher’s job is to make scripture simple, real and applicable for believers.

2.

Apollos was a gifted teacher.

OTHER NEW TESTAMENT TEACHERS A.

Paul, the Apostle 1.

B.

II Timothy 1:11, “...to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.”

Links with other gifts 1.

Acts 13:1, “Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers…”

2.

Judas and Silas a. Acts 15:32, “Now Judas and Silas, themselves being prophets also, exhorted and strengthened the brethren with many words.”

3.

In Luke, the evangelist and teacher a. Luke 20:1, “Now it happened on one of those days, as He [Jesus] taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel…”

APPLICATION: 1.

The goal of teaching is love. I Timothy 1:5, “Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart…”

2.

To make things simple and understandable.

3.

Teachers should train teachers. II Timothy 2:2, “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

DR. LUKE, THE TEACHER A.

His qualities: 1.

He verified the truth. a. Luke 1:4, “...that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.”

2.

He based what he said on known truth. a. Luke 1:1-3, “Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus...”

He was orderly in his presentation. a. Luke 1:1-3

4.

He researched his teaching. a. Acts 1:1, “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach…”

5.

He was accurate. a. Luke 1:1-4

6.

He set out the facts!

JESUS, THE TEACHER A.

He was recognized as a teacher (The Master Teacher) 1.

He taught about hearing and doing. 1.

Matthew 13:9, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

2.

Luke 6:46-47, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like…’”

3.

John 14:21, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

He lived His teaching. 1.

D.

John 3:2, “This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.’”

John 13:14, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

His teachings were interesting and attention getting. 1.

He taught in parables.

Mark 3:23, “So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables…”

APPLICATION:
