My journey started several years ago. Initially I was concerned about planning one hour a week but jumped in. I was matched with a 5th grader who was attending grade school close to my office who had recently lost his father. I will be the first to admit there were a lot of challenges: attendance, grades, behavioral issues, and legal issues. There were so many times I felt inadequate dealing with issues that were so foreign to me, but I knew that one hour a week meant everything to my TeamMate. When I felt the lowest in my ability to help is when I would get a call from a teacher, principal, and even probation officer saying “your TeamMate has made a poor choice, he asked me to call and fill you in and help with his plan of action.” Grade school, middle school, and four high schools later he has graduated and is working very successfully to support his family. My journey started with the intent on helping others. I hope I made a difference in his life, but I promise you I gained more in that hour every week than my TeamMate ever did! There are 700 youth in Lincoln on the waiting list for a mentor, step up to offer your time. I promise, you will be glad you did!

3 Tips

for Caring Everyday Listening

Helping Through Tough Times If one of your friends is going through a tough time, the best thing you can do to help is to be there to listen. Although there are more than three tips on ‘How to Listen,” some important ones are: ff Be supportive and validate the other person—it may have taken them a lot of courage to share with someone. Hear the words and listen for the feelings underneath, then acknowledge those feelings. ff Let them talk—it can be tempting to jump in with your own story or advice. Remember this is about helping them—keep the focus there. ff Find other supports—there are other resources out there to help your friend. It is important to help them learn about other supports in the community so they don’t feel alone and it’s not all on you. Source: http://bit.ly/2jtXfpd
