The Goal:  Biblical Counseling is Purposeful    Every counseling system has specific goals toward which it is aiming:  Every counseling system has a “way” for people to change:    1) Psycho‐dynamic counseling – provide insight concerning inner  motivations so that psychic pain will be reduced (Freud)  2) Behavioristic counseling‐ change maladaptive behavior patterns  into more adaptive ones (Skinner/Dr. Laura)   3) Cognitive counseling – change irrational, destructive thought  patterns into more realistic constructive thought patterns (Beck)   4) Existential Humanist/ Client centered – this approach helps the  counselee to become more congruent, authentic, in touch with his  feelings, develop more self‐esteem and better self‐image  (Rogerian)  5) Family Systems – reduce dysfunctional family relationships and  promote more functional, harmonious relationships in the family.  Family systems counseling makes the family the highest good and  ultimate value in counseling. Whatever promotes harmony is  right. God and His will are not the central focus.  6) Medical‐ Model counseling‐ Problem lies in the brain – medication       Every counseling system has a source, problem, solution, change,  system of help and apologetic.    Example using Skinners behaviorism system:    Source of authority: Skinner/Pavlov  Problem: Humans are animals who have been programed incorrectly  Solution: Re‐program – Re‐train people

Change: Rewards/punishments (ECST in the past)  System of help: Your psychotherapist  Apologetic: DSM4 (changed numerous times over the years)    Example using Biblical Counseling approach:    Source of authority: Word of God  Problem: Sinful nature (Sin)/healing/wounded  Solution: Repentance/forgiveness/healing  Change: Sanctification  System of help: Holy Spirit; community; Word of God; accountability    *** Secular psychology may describe the behavior of someone better  than the Bible but where they go wrong is the why the behavior is  present in a persons life. The DSM4 does NOT diagnose a person, it  describes their behavior.    “Biblical Psychology” – A biblical study of the soul.     *Who knows better the soul of a person than the creator of that soul?  Psychology is the study of a person’s soul. God is the final authority  on our souls. Biblical Counseling is using His authoritative wisdom to  diagnose and deal with our problems.     Biblical Counseling Model:    The goal: Christlikeness (for the glory of God)    The Word of God applied to our hearts by the Holy Spirit is our  method.    The Word of God is:

1) Inspired: 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by God…” The  Word of God, inspired, means that the Holy Spirit accurately  conveys what God intended through the written Word.   2) Inerrant: Num 23:19, “God is not a man, that He should lie…” –  The Word of God as inerrant is the conviction that, because the  Bible is God’s very word, it is completely free from error of  everything it teaches.   3) Infallible: Isa 55:11, “It will not return to Me empty, without  accomplishing what I desire…” – The Word of God as infallible  means that the Bible will not fail in its ultimate purpose of  revealing God and the way of salvation to humans.  4) Sufficient: 2 Pet 1:3, “Seeing that His divine power has granted to  us everything pertaining to life and godliness…” – The Word of  God as sufficient means that God has provided in His Word all that  man needs to know about spiritual matters.     Further, Scripture teaches that the Word of God     a) Guides and Delights (Ps 119:1‐176)  b) Cleanses (John 15:3; Eph 5:26)  c) Sanctifies ( John 17:17)  d) Teaches and gives hope (Rom 15:4)  e) Judges thoughts and attitudes (Heb 4:12)  f) To make wise the simple (Ps 19:7)    Jesus performed 4 types of miracles  Nature – food/wine; calm storms  Diseases – physical  Demonic – spiritual   Death – power over life and death
