The Hope of the World The Hope of the World, Part 1

Message by Tom Mercer January 21-22, 2017

Acts 2:42

1. The Church is a people, not a place.

The Church is not a physical structure, but a spiritual unity with Jesus and the rest of His body.

John 16:6-8, Acts 1:8, John 17:20-21, Ephesians 4:3-6, 1 Corinthians 8:1

The Bible describes discipleship as taking whatever we know about God and use it to follow Jesus more closely.

2. The Church is thriving, not surviving.

3. The Church is a strategy, not an objective.

Matthew 16:13-18

4. The Church is a movement, not a membership. • The church is a flock. • The church is a body. • The church is a building.

Ephesians 2:19-21

• As part of a flock, a sheep drives purpose. • Attached to the body, a foot generates progress. • As part of a building, a nail adds power.

“Failure we can do alone. Success always takes help.” – Simon Sinek

HDC | small groups ` 1. Pastor Tom reminded us to never confuse personal faith with private faith. What is the difference between them and why do we often blend them together?

2. Tom mentioned several excuses people use about the church. Which ones have you used or heard others use and why do you think people use them?

Read Acts 2:41-47 3. According to these verses, what are the marks of a healthy church?

4. How are these marks strengthened by living in community? What might happen if we tried to live out these values on our own?

Read Hebrews 10:19-25 5. What is the value of regularly meeting together according to this passage?

6. The writer of Hebrews said we should relentlessly pursue our hope. What are some ways we can pursue that hope together?

7. In what ways, can we, in the church, spur one another to good deeds? Who is someone in your life that has done that for you?

8. If it’s so important to not give up meeting together, what are some reasons we might give up meeting together?

9. The church is compared to a flock, a body and a building. How do these metaphors help you understand your role with the church?
