2014 Taxable Sales Increase in Mitchell

Taxable sales increased to almost $545 million in Mitchell during calendar year 2014. This represents $18.5 million in new additional sales or a 3.5% increase when compared to 2013. With over a half a billion in sales, it represents the highest volume of taxable sales in the history of the City. The table below is for the ten largest cities in South Dakota shows, only Sioux Falls with a 4.8% increase and Rapid City with 4.1% increase in sales had higher percentage increases than the City of Mitchell. Huron and Aberdeen had slight declines in sales while sales in Brookings did not change.

TOP 10 CITIES City Taxable Sales % Increase (In Millions) Sioux Falls $4,639.1 4.8% Rapid City $2,599.2 4.1% Aberdeen $795.2 1.5% Watertown $709.1 1.5% Mitchell $544.9 3.5% Brookings $533.3 0.0% Yankton $402.9 1.9% Pierre $354.9 2.6% Spearfish $327.9 2.7% Huron $296.8 -0.1% State of South Dakota $20,302.6 4.1% Source: SD of Revenue website Sales Pull of Mitchell Strong An interesting comparison of taxable sales in the Mitchell community is found when the population of the largest cities in South Dakota is divided into the taxable sales of that city. This is often referred to the “Sales Pull Factor”.

In other words, how many sales of goods and services in a city are coming from outside the community and not from the people living in the city. These “extra” sales per person are coming from the regional trade area surrounding the city or from out of state tourism dollars. The table below compares taxable sales against the population of the largest ten cities and for the state as a whole.

Top 10 Cities Pull Factor 2014 2014 City Population Taxable Sales Sales Per Capita (In Millions) Sioux Falls 164,676 4,639.1 $28,171.1 Rapid City 70,812 2,599.2 $36,705.0 Aberdeen 27,333 795.2 $29,094.0 Brookings 22,943 533.3 $23,244.2 Watertown 21,995 709.1 $32,238.4 Mitchell 15,539 544.9 $35,070.3 Yankton 14,591 402.9 $27,616.3 Pierre 13,984 354.9 $25,382.5 Huron 13,097 296.8 $22,659.5 Spearfish 11,107 327.9 $29,530.8 State-wide 845,510 20302.6 $24,012.2 **2014 Population estimates from Census http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/46000.html When comparing the average taxable sales for each person living in the State of South Dakota to sales for each person living in the city of Mitchell it becomes clear how strong sales are in Mitchell compared to the rest of the state. The average taxable sales for each person living in South Dakota is $24,012. Mitchell has average taxable sales per person living in the city of $35,070. This is over $11,000 higher in sales per person than the state average. Mitchell has the second highest rate of sales of the largest ten cities in the state with Rapid City having the highest per capita sales.

Cracked Teeth

Brands that you know and trust, for any type of

Did you know… Cracks in teeth can develop for a number of reasons, including clenching, grinding, and large fillings which weaken the surrounding tooth structure. Symptoms of a cracked tooth can be sensitivity, pain on biting, or there may be no symptoms until the tooth breaks. Cracks will never get smaller; they will only propagate and grow larger. At some point a piece of the tooth can break off and this can be painful. The best way to treat a cracked tooth is to cover the whole tooth with a crown made of strong porcelain or metal, which protects the tooth from breaking. For more information check out our website or call 605-996-9944 to make an appointment with Dr. Farnham or Dr. Weber.

Showcase Your Business to Thousands of Visitors at the Mitchell Visitor Information Center What is the Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB)? The Mitchell Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is a division of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce. Consistent with the goals of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce, the Convention Visitors Bureau exists to enhance the economic well-being of the City of Mitchell and its surrounding area.

The addition of an Avera Dialysis Center provides patients the full continuum of kidney disease services within the Avera system. The new center will feature comforts like specially designed patient chairs with heat and massage, a blanket warmer, as well as television screen adjustment at the arm. This new space will give patients more scheduling options. Once the Avera Grassland Health Campus is completed the Mitchell Dialysis Center will move to that facility, which will be located on Cabela Drive, and feature a state-of-the-art dialysis clinic with 12 patient stations.

State of the City with Mayor Tracy Mayor Ken Tracy spoke at a Network Lunch on February 9th and provided an update on current projects and commented on the status of the City. The City has undergone many changes in the past year including hiring for several key positions and beginning/completion on several major projects. Watch the weekly e-newsletter from the Chamber for details on upcoming Network events.

The Library renovation project added 6,200 sq. ft. to the facility. The meeting room was doubled in size to accommodate a small kitchen and two meeting rooms. Bathrooms are now ADA compliant. A permanent book sale room has been created along with a director’s conference room and an expanded workroom with a basement underneath. There is a new Teen room complete with computers, tables and chairs. Children’s and Adult areas were expanded for reading and studying. Computers are grouped together in a lab setting.

Iverson’s Supports Community Development The Mitchell Area Chamber, Development Corporation, Convention & Visitors Bureau and Dakota Heartland Development Association would like to thank Iverson’s for supporting Community Development. Iverson’s generous two year lease donation will help the organizations save money on travel expenses. Iverson’s donation creates a delightful partnership that enhances the already existing relationship with the Chamber, Development Corp., CVB & DHDA. This unique, central agency works to improve the business climate and build a better community. We would also like to thank Make-It-Mine for the vehicle wrap. Iverson’s commitment to community development is sincerely appreciated.

The Mitchell Visitor Information Center Cabin, located just off I-90 Exit 332, will be open for business on Friday, May 1st for the 2015 tourist season! Many visitors, from many walks of life, with many questions or needs stop in every year. Questions include: • Where is the World’s Only Corn Palace? • What is there to do in Mitchell? • Where can I get a good night’s rest? • Where can I get something to eat and drink? • Where can I find a good cup of coffee? • Where are your antique stores, downtown shops, restaurants, ball parks, campgrounds, parks, swimming pool, playgrounds, golf courses, campgrounds, hotels, car dealers, ATM machines, banks, churches, the cemetery, the library, or the bus stop? • Where can I find emergency care, the hospital, a pharmacy, the court house, a laundromat, a shower, grocery stores, furniture stores, and lumber yards? • Where can I get my eyeglasses, flat tires or windshields fixed? • Where can I get an oil change? • Where can I go shopping for clothes, gifts, and antiques? • Where can I board my horses or dogs? If your business offers an answer to one of the above questions, we strongly encourage you to showcase your business to the thousands of visitors that come through our doors. You can promote your business in the Mitchell Visitor Information Center by purchasing a brochure slot. All brochures receive full-viewing exposure in the slots. Nearly 8,400 visitors stopped into the Visitor Information center last summer. Each and every visitor receives personal, one-on-one travel recommendations from the moment they step in the door. Having your brochure available to hand out helps our staff promote your business in the best way possible. For more information please contact Lisa at the Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau office at 996.6223 or via email at lisa@visitmitchell. com. The staff at the Mitchell Visitor Information Center and the Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau would like to thank you in advance for your support of our efforts!

While the Chamber’s mission is to provide leadership to unify community action that enhances the business environment and the quality of life of the Mitchell area, the Mitchell CVB is tasked with the mission to increase visitor-related revenue from local, state, regional, and national markets. The CVB is the primary marketing agency for the city and region and promotes the Mitchell area for leisure travel, group travel, pheasant hunting, athletic and special events, meetings and conventions. The final result of these concentrated efforts is a positive and meaningful experience for our visitors as well as strong economy for the Mitchell area. Funding for the CVB is provided through a state law that allows municipalities to impose up to a 1 percent gross sales tax on motel and hotel lodging, alcoholic beverages and prepared food. It is commonly referred to as the “bed, board, and booze” or “entertainment” tax. Through its holistic marketing strategy, online presence, brand platform, consistent communications, reliable research, sales, service, and the right partnerships, the Mitchell CVB will: • Increase awareness of Mitchell • Increase attendance and spending at Mitchell’s attractions, hotels, retailers, restaurants, & bars • Bring more athletic events, special events, meetings, and conventions to Mitchell • Position Mitchell as the premier location for pheasant hunting • Maximize marketing impact and media-buying power through cooperative marketing initiatives with partners • Provide interactive content and invite more consumer dialogue online • Generate media coverage • Utilize and maximize research on critical customer information and intelligence to outline the greatest use of resources to increase business demand to Mitchell • Deliver the highest level of service and quality Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau Contact Information: 601 N. March Happenings

National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic

2015 Health Fair

Ag in the Classroom Coming Up

Start the month off right with Neil Simon’s hysterical comedy, Rumors, shown at the Area Community Theatre March 1st, and again March 6th-8th. Help Cabela’s celebrate their 15th Anniversary the evening of March 3rd, and that weekend get ready for spring at the Holiday Arts Spring Craft Show March 6th-7th at the Masonic Temple. Got milk? Well, grab a glass and head to the Annual Wingapalooza March 14th at the Masonic Temple! If a wing eating contest is not your thing, head to Cabela’s for the Great Outdoor Days. Watch as area high school students give you their best vocal performance possible at the Mitchell Show Choir Classic at the Corn Palace on March 21st. A few days later, head back to the Corn Palace and enjoy dinner and a performance at the Friend de Coup Dinner Theatre March 24th, 26th-28th. Looking to spruce up your yard or add on a third bathroom, be sure to make it out to the Davison County Fairgrounds March 28th-29th for the Home & Spring Preview Show. For the grand finale, watch volunteers “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the Polar Plunge March 29th in the Highland Mall parking lot. (They must be out of their minds to jump into that ice water, but it’s all for a good cause!)

Mitchell had a great presence at the National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic last month in Des Moines, IA! The Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau along with sixteen partners had great exposure to approximately 23,000 pheasant hunters. Partners included A&D Zoss Pheasant Hunting, Anderson Kennels, Boyds Gunstocks Inc., Cabela’s, Folan Ranch, Granite Springs Lodge, Hampton Inn, Kelly Inn, Hunter’s Dream, LLC, Hyatt’s Green Acres, Kieffer Pheasant Hunting, Inc., Mike Kuchera’s SD Hunting Guide Service, Pheasants Forever Mitchell Chapter, Potter’s Fields Outfitters & Lodge, Rooster Roost Ranch, and South Dakota Pheasant Country Hunting,

The 2015 Health Fair will be held on Saturday, April 11th at the Mitchell Christian School. Registration for vendors is now open – contact Rebecca at 996-5567 or [email protected]. Registration forms are available online and additional information regarding the Health Fair will be updated at www.mitchellchamber.com/pages/AnnualHealthFair

The Chamber Agri-Business Committee will be hosting its annual Ag-in-the-Classroom, offered to 4th and 5th graders from Mitchell and area schools, on March 19. It is an opportunity for students to learn about farm animals such as dairy, beef, horses, sheep, dogs and pigs. In addition to the animals, they also learn about the soil, crops and the importance of safety around electricity and farm machinery. If you would like more information or to sponsor this event, please contact Rebecca at 996-5567 or [email protected].

Mitchell is widely recognized for the overwhelming hospitality and the phenomenal hunting. Items donated by Cabela’s, Kelly Inn, and Boyds Gunstocks Inc. for the daily drawing were in high demand and kept people coming back to our booth! Visitors were extremely interested in coming to the Mitchell area to hunt, many with stories to share of past hunts in South Dakota. This was an amazing opportunity to make contact with those that make Mitchell a place to experience and we will be following up with each individual who expressed interest! National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is a celebration that focuses on wildlife conservation, upland game bird hunting, sport dogs, wildlife habitat management and restoration. In connection with the event, Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever held seminars on habitat improvement, hunting, shooting sports, wild game cooking, dog training, conservation and more!

Sponsorships are available this year too! Even if you are not able to host a table at the Health Fair, you can support better health in our community be being a sponsor – ranging from $125-$1,000! Contact [email protected] for more information.

While providing updates, a caucus was held with electronic voting to see what the attendees of Business Day thought! After the caucus the group visited both the Senate and House sessions and got to see their work in action! The day was wrapped up with a banquet, allowing time for all participants to visit with our legislators. We hope you join us next year and make your voice heard in Pierre!

Wingapalooza, which is a fundraiser for Mitchell Main Street & Beyond, is set for noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at the Masonic Temple in Mitchell. “We’re excited about this year’s event – we’re piggy-backing onto March Madness and since it’s also around St. Patrick’s Day, we’ll have some fun with that too,” said Kari Kirchmeyer, the new director for Mitchell Main Street & Beyond. The MMS&B board made the decision to change up the date this year, which usually is around the Super Bowl, due in large part to the organization moving offices and gaining a new director all in the same month. “We’ll try this new date and if the community embraces it then we’ll see about next year,” Kirchmeyer said. “Our vendors and our participants have been so loyal that our number one goal is to make them happy – we look forward to the feedback this year and are hoping for a great turnout.” Tickets to attend Wingapalooza are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and will go on sale Feb. 9. They will be available on the Wingapalooza website, www. mitchellmainstreet.com/wingapalooza.html or at the MMS&B office, 601 North Main Street (Chamber of Commerce). Party packages will also be available. Typically, there are about 15 different booths which can be sponsored by local businesses, restaurants or community members. Registration is $100 for two worker passes and no wings, or $325 for two worker passes and 400 wings provided by MMS&B. Those who register for the first option are responsible for bringing in their own wings and pre-cooking them for the contest. Registration forms can be found on our website, www.mitchellmainstreet.com. Teams are encouraged to create a theme for their booth and prizes will be awarded to best original booth decorating, hottest wings, and people’s choice for best wings. Mitchell Main Street & Beyond began in 2007 with the mission to maximize the economic potential and to preserve the heritage of Mitchell’s historic Downtown district. Mitchell Main Street & Beyond offers membership to businesses and individuals who are interested in the revitalization of the downtown Mitchell and local business development. A full listing of membership benefits can be found on its website. For more information about Mitchell Main Street & Beyond, visit www.mitchellmainstreet.com or call Kari Kirchmeyer at 605-990-4500.

The average taxable sales for each person living in South Dakota is $24,012. Mitchell has average taxable sales per person living in the city of $35,070. This is over $11,000 higher in sales per person than the state average.
