I'm supposed to exercise more. Who of us shouldn't exercise more unless you are already on a regimen of running, swimming or walking? Exercise is good, and it will help our heart beat strong, increase our blood flow, stimulate our minds, and do all kinds of other good
things. The only problem is that I really don't like a regimen of regular exercise. I know it is good for me, and I would like to have my life extended, but isn't there a way to do that without exercising? I walk a good bit, and I work in my yard. I love cutting wood and splitting wood. I play golf when I can (not lately, though), and I think I am getting good exercise. The truth is, though, I do little on a regular basis to take care of myself. That's not good. We can sometimes fool ourselves with our spiritual lives as well, thinking we are fine when we really are not. We might say, "Well, I try to go to church as often as I canmaybe a couple of times a monthand I try to pray sometimes, and I

always mean to read my Bible. Isn't that good enough?" If you have to ask if it is good enough, you already know it isn't! There are exercises we call spiritual disciplines, things to do that bring us closer to God, that deepen our faith. Worship is an obvious spiritual discipline. We gather with others to praise God and to be inspired by the music, the singing or maybe even the sermon. Doing this on a regular basis also helps us establish relationships with other Christians who encourage us on our way. Prayer is a spiritual discipline, and when we are intentional to take time to pray, it becomes easier and more fulfilling. We come to know the voice of God in our hearts when we learn to listen in prayer as well. During this season of Lent, pay attention to the spiritual disciplines as you prepare for Easter. There are other disciplines I'll talk about later, but if you get started with these two, that will be a great beginning. Pray for Easter in our church, that people will come to hear the great resurrection story and have their life changed. That would be a great beginning as well. See you Sunday! Jay

"Here I am, Lord.Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart." Stephen Ministers are named after St. Stephen, one of the first deacons (servants) in the early church, commissioned by the apostles to care for the needs of people in the Christian community. 1. They provide continuous, conscious effort to maintain the bond of trust between the person receiving care and the caregiver. 2. They are trained for 50 hours and then commissioned by the church. This journey is not an end in itself, but rather a means to the end of being more fully equipped for a ministry of service (Ephesians 4:1112) 3. This Christian, caring relationship focuses on the unique needs of each person and lasts as long as the

need exists. 4. Some needs that people may experience are: depression, anxiety, divorce or separation, accidents, natural disasters, serious illness, a spiritual crises, or bereavement. Listening is by far a greater service than speaking to fill the silence of a moment. Sometimes people just need a hug, a hand to hold or someone to just listen to them without our opinion or criticism. They don't just want a bandaid when they hurt so much inside. Our current Stephen Ministers are: Jean Steinberg, Merry and Lane Grayson, Ron and Jane Lang, Bonnie Black, and me. We are considering holding another Stephen Ministry class this fall, so if you feel you may want to take the class, please contact me at 6307792175 or email:

Youth Every Sunday 4-5:30pm Family Life Center at Broad St. campus www.XtremeMYF.weebly.com Please pray for our Xtreme youth group as they attend the Spiritual Life Retreat at Camp Glisson in Dahlonega on March 8-10. If you would like to donate snacks for the trip, that would be great. You may drop them off at the Evans House. Or, to off-set some of the costs of the trip, a few dollars to help feed the kids supper on Friday evening or Sunday lunch would be very helpful. Thank you!

FUMC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The Member Spotlight this month is on two relatively new members, David and Sylvia Leeseburg from Del Web. We welcome them to Greensboro FUMC with open arms. Both David and Sylvia were born in Homestead, IL. They both remember meeting each other at the tender age of three, but not again until they started dating in high school. Miraculous! Their relationship continued until David graduated from Cuyahoga Community College in Marketing and Sales. Sylvia graduated from Dyke College and worked as the Administrator in the President's office at Illinois Benedictine College. Four years later, they married.

They have been married for 45 years and have two lovely girls, Heather, now living in Ohio and Julie, who lives in Illinois. David and Sylvia have moved nine times throughout the mid west. David worked as a sales representative for wholesale clothiers, finally retiring as Vice President of sales for Bayer Manufactoring Company. He is an avid fisherman, computer programer, and photographer. Sylvia says he has a marvelous sense of humor, very caring, and loves to talk to people. While David was doing all this, Sylvia was certainly not sitting still. Her last years of employment were with Edward Jones as a successful Senior Branch Administrator a job she says made her so tired she rested for a month after her retirement. However, along with her career, she found time to serve as chairperson of the church deacons committee, Christian Education committee, taught Bible study and Sunday school, a Stephens minister for 23 years, and volunteered at local hospitals and nursing homes. In retirement, her interest turned to oil painting, reading, and traveling. How in the world did they get all the way to Greensboro? A brother had moved to Del Webb and during a visit, they fell in love with the area. Now her remaining sister plans to move here uniting the family. God works in wonderous ways, bringing us the pleasure of family and friends. God has certainly brought our church a gift in these two members with such marvelous graces. Submitted by Bonnie A. Black

Our speaker is our own Rex Bradley who will walk us through the rich 125 year history of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat company where he was employed for four decades. A company that has sold 100 million bats and remains today the most popular bat brand in baseball history. In addition, our special baseball guest is Clarence Jones, former Major League Player, and hitting coach of the ATLANTA BRAVES from 19891998 during their World Series run and a number of division championships. Clarence will touch on where baseball has been, where it is today while taking any Q and A's. Music: God's Universal Language Help Wanted: Currently need two bell ringers for bell choir. Pay includes lots of giggling and good natured poking of fun at the director. Benefits include good camaraderie and service to the Lord. Many people are probably unaware that instrumental music was not used in the worship of the first century church. In fact, instruments were not introduced into the Roman Catholic Church until more than 600 years after time of Christ. The Greek Orthodox Church has been very slow to allow them. Most of the major Protestant churches began without them. HYMN STUDIES ANNOTATED METHODIST HYMNAL by Charles S. Nutter, Tilton, New Hampshire; Feb. 15, 1884. On page 18 of this book there was hymn no. 27, "Praise The Lord." We give the first and fourth stanzas: 1. Praise the Lord! his glories show, Saints within his courts below, Angels round his throne above, All that see and share his love.

4. Strings and voices, hands and hearts In the concert bear your parts; All that breathe, your Lord adore, Praise him, praise him evermore! Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!" (Psalms 150:3-4)
"The first organ certainly known to exist and be used in a church was put in the cathedral at AixlaChapel by the German Emperor Charlemagne, who came to the throne in 768. It met with great opposition among the Romanists, especially among the monks, and it made its way but slowly into common use "For almost a thousand years Gregorian chant, without any instrumental or harmonic addition was the only music used in connection with the liturgy. The organ, in its primitive and rude form, was the first, and for a long time the sole, instrument used to accompany the chant." Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 10, pg. 657. On the day of your gladness also, and at your appointed feasts and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings. They shall be a reminder of you before your God: I am the LORD your God." (Numbers 10:110 ESV) Our current keyboardists consist of Dawn Ruppelt, Lindsay Lipscomb, and Kim McClain. Our trumpet players are Mark Ruppelt, Christian Ruppelt and Peyton Walker. Our flute player is Cinda Walker, our percussionist is Gladston Trotman and our harmonica player is Kermit Combs. We also have very accomplished bell choir. We are truly blessed with instrumental talent at FUMC. *****Due to Victor Lane moving away, we have an OPEN spot in the bell choir. We are now short two bell ringers. Please prayerfully consider if this is a ministry you could commit to. In Christ,
