Louis Vierne (1870-1937) MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES Today’s Gospel reading recounts the multiplication of the loaves of bread and fishes—a popular miracle performed by Jesus that many of us learned back from when we were in kindergarten. We recall from last week’s Gospel that Jesus and his disciples went to a far off area hoping to seek rest and solitude, but, many people followed them. Now, recognizing that these people are far from their homes, Jesus must feed them. A small boy offered Jesus his five loaves of bread and two fishes and Jesus miraculously multiplied them to feed a crowd of around 5,000 men in addition to unnumbered women and children. (Could you imagine cooking for a crowd of that many?) The people were amazed at what Jesus had done and immediately declared him to be a prophet. Those in attendance were probably aware of the passage from the Second Book of Kings, which serves as today’s first reading, and perhaps thought of Jesus as the aforementioned prophet. There are also similarities between the boy in today’s Gospel and Elisha from the first reading. Both of them chose to sacrificially share what little food they had with others instead of keeping it for themselves. Through both of these persons, we learn that God’s generosity is often manifested through our human hands. Beyond food, we hear today’s psalm that the Lord (whom we, as Christians recognize as Jesus), will satisfy all of our needs. Food is simply a metaphor for our needs, of which Jesus will provide for. Lastly, the second reading more or less connects all of the readings together by teaching us that through Jesus, we all form one body. He is our provider and he is our redeemer. If we follow him, we will “live in a manner worthy of the call you [we] have received.” (continued)

JULY 26, 2015

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Procession Hymn was written by Sr. Delores Duffner. I’ve given a brief synopsis of her biography in past bulletins, so you should all know her by now. The hymn portrays today’s Gospel reading from John 6: 1-15. “We come with joy in Jesus Christ, Who knows our human need.”—what a true statement. I particularly enjoy the metaphor in the third stanza where she writes, “Like ripples in a pool, our gifts, However small they are, Will reach and heal a needy world, Will comfort near and far.” It is a sublime message for those of us considering a ministry here in the parish. Like the boy in the Gospel and Elisha in the first reading, we may think that we have little to offer, but through Jesus, we actually possess a lot. Some people think that they aren’t good enough to sing in the choir or to usher at the doors, but that’s nonsense. We all have gifts that ripple out their effects on others beyond our imagination. The Offertory Hymn, written by Sylvia Dunstan, begins with the line, “All who hunger, gather gladly.” Pay attention to that last word – we are glad to be here, together in the presence of the Lord. Themes from the Gospel are reflected in this hymn, but each stanza ends with a line from Psalm 34, “Taste and see that God is good.” God is good in so many ways, as reflected in this hymn, but most importantly, and tied to last week’s Gospel, he finds those of us who are scattered, lost, and on the wrong path, and brings us back into his fold (stanza 2). The communion hymn, “Blest are They,” reflects the communion antiphon for the day, but it is also linked to the Gospel reading. “Blest are They” was written by David Haas, who has made a career composing liturgical/Christian music. While the main focus of this song’s text is a paraphrase of the Beatitudes, it is convenient to compare the verses of the song with the needs and suffering of those gathered to seek Jesus in today’s Gospel reading. Additionally, the refrain is linked to the second reading in that it charges us to follow in the footsteps of the earliest followers of Christ in order to reach eternal life. Lastly, today’s Concluding Hymn was written by Katherine Davis, an extremely talented musician from New England also known for composing “The Little Drummer Boy.” Employing Old Testament images, “Let All Things Now Living” calls forth praise from all creatures and directs that praise to God the Creator. We praise God because he made us and provides for us; we join our praise to that of the entire universe in a song of “hosanna and praise.”

END-OF-LIFE ADVANCE DIRECTIVES Decisions of life and death are best made not in haste, but after taking time to think through our wishes and talking with family members. To help in this process, Maryland’s bishops have prepared an advance directive, the Catholic Declaration for Health Care Decision Making, through which you can appoint a health care agent and express your wishes for spiritual support, medical care and treatment, pain-relieving medication, and medically-assisted nutrition and hydration. To learn more, Maryland’s bishops have released a pastoral letter, Comfort and Consolation, on care for the sick and dying. Visit the Maryland Catholic Conference at www.mdcathcon.org/publications to download copies. Also available for download are: A Summary Q&A, that outlines the main points of Comfort and Consolation; and A Legal Guide, that provides practical advices for completing an advance directive that properly reflects Catholic principles and that also includes the Catholic Declaration on Health Care Decision Making. DEEPEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH Venerable Fulton Sheen once said: “There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive the Catholic Church to be.” Would you like to know more about the faith we profess in a God who loves you beyond all telling? Have you ever felt at a loss to describe the mysteries of our faith? Living Catholic and Faith Foundations, adult formation courses for the Archdiocese of Washington, provide you with the opportunity to deepen your relationship with Christ and his Church. Courses are available online and at parishes around the archdiocese. To learn more or to sign up for these courses, visit the Archdiocese of Washington adult formation page at
