ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP BETHESDA, MARYLAND

FOR THE

TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / YEAR B

Entrance Hymn .......................................................................... The Kingdom of God | #720 ...................................................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) You Are the Way | #682 Readings in Worship hymnal at #1191

Entrance Antiphon: Ps 130:3-4 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But with you is found forgiveness, O God of Israel. Reading I: Wis 7:7-11 The sage of the book of Wisdom praises wisdom as the search for God in all things. Such wisdom is more valuable than any of the riches and treasures of the world – an idea that the rich young man in today’s gospel cannot grasp. Psalm Response: Ps 90 Psalm 90 is a national lament, a prayer for God’s help during a national crisis. The passage we sing today comes from the petition to God at least to balance the evil days with days of gladness. We end with petition that God would do even more and bring us prosperity. Reading II: Heb 4:12-13 The word of God pierces our soul, reforming us, confronting us with our own weakness. By peeling away our veneer of self-absorbed lives, we share in Jesus’ suffering, and are able to accept healing from Jesus. Gospel: Mk 10:17-30 Life in God asks everything of us, even that which we hold beyond God’s asking. Yet if we give ourselves fully to God, all will be given to us, even that which we have no right to hope for—salvation. Communion Antiphon: Ps 34:11 The rich suffer want and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.

Preparation of the Gifts ..................................................................... Here I Am, Lord | #783 ................................ (10 am) Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 | Gabriel Fauré (1845‒1924) Word, equal to the Almighty, our only hope, Eternal light of the earth and the Heavens; We break the peaceful night's silence, Divine Saviour, cast your eyes upon us! Spread the fire of your mighty grace upon us May the entire hell flee at the sound of your voice; Disperse from any slothful soul the drowsiness Which induces it to forget your laws! Oh Christ, look with favour upon this faithful people Which has now gathered to bless you. Receive its singing, offered to your immortal glory, And may it leave with the gifts you have bestowed upon it!

............................................................................................. (Sun. 5 pm) Seek Ye First | #663 Preface Acclamation ................................. Holy, Holy, Holy from A Community Mass | #353 ..................................................................... The Home and School Association is now collecting items for the Thrift Shop at St. Jane De Chantal School’s 13th Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 10. Consider donating your gently used items. They can accept a wide variety of items such as housewares, jewelry, sporting equipment, bikes, books, baby items and toys; they cannot accept clothing, shoes, broken toys, games with missing pieces, or dirty/stained items. They will be accepting items until November 7. If you have items to donate, contact Sofia Pagedas at [email protected]. Proceeds benefit our school. Any items not sold will be donated. Thank you for your support! PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. BURNEY Fr. Keith Burney will be leading a pilgrimage to France, "Following the Footsteps of St. Jane Frances de Chantal

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER? Our parish always has need for new volunteers to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers), particularly at the Sunday 12:00 noon and 5:00 pm Masses. Interested persons should contact Dr. Russell Weismann by calling the parish office. An archdiocesan training session for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will take place on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 am—12:00 pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Silver Spring. BASS VOICES NEEDED The Parish Choir is in need of additional bass voices to support their choral ministry. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at 8:00 pm, and the choir sings for the Sunday 10:00 am Mass. The ability to read music is not required, but prior choral experience is helpful. Contact Dr. Russell Weismann at [email protected] for more information.

SUMMER M ATH WINNERS Every summer, each student is expected to complete summer math work using an online program called IXL. This summer the St. Jane de Chantal student body played over 1800 hours of math games, answered over 200,000

BETHESDA, MARYLAND questions, and worked on over 2,000 skills! IXL helps to keep student's math skills strong over the long summer months. Top mathletes in the entire school are: Oliver Weng (25+ hours), Joshua Rivero (31+ hours), Mary Celeste (31+ hours), Noor Sissoko (36+ hours), and Carla Barahona (43+ hours). Congratulations! DECCA In an initiative to take care of our school and its surrounding property, all of the students took part in DECCA Day. DECCA stands for De Chantal Cleaning Association. Once a month our school strives to work together as a team and keep our school looking clean and beautiful inside and out as a DECCA team. Picking up litter, cleaning door knobs, light switches, and returning playground equipment to its proper home are all part of DECCA days. Thank you to the DECCA teacher team for leading our students by example to care for their school as they would their own homes. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WINS AT INVITATIONAL The St. Jane de Chantal Varsity girls cross country team took first place at a large DC invitational meet organized by Pacers Running Company. Defeating 46 teams, including a team that has been undefeated for four years, De Chantal girls showed their speed and competitiveness. Runners include: Meredith Gotzman, Caroline Gotzman, Grace Finnegan, Jolie Serra, Jenn Maxwell, Lillian Aquino, Morgan Skibo, Katie McCabe, Anna Veith, Alessia Jones, and Sydney Trent. CYO teams are made up of children from the parish and from our parish school. The team is looking forward to competing at their CYO championship on October 21.

Dorsonville, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, will give special remarks. WRAP: WHITE RIBBON AGAINST PORNOGRAPHY WEEK White Ribbon Against Pornography Week will take place October 27 through November 3. Pornography is on the rise, not only because it is easier to access, but because of the lack of awareness about the negative and harmful effects associated with this addictive material. During WRAP Week, fly a white ribbon on your car or mailbox to take a stand for decency. WRAP Week brings together hundreds of national, state, and local groups, along with driven concerned citizens in a massive effort to educate the

public. Is your family protected against the devastating effects of pornography? The archdiocesan Office for Family Life provides anti-pornography resources on its website www.visiblesign.org. Create In Me a Clean Heart, the United States bishops’ pastoral response to pornography, can be found at http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/humanlife-and-dignity/pornography/index.cfm. CANDIDATE SURVEY RESULTS AVAILABLE With the 2018 general election just weeks away (November 6), the Maryland Catholic Conference has published the final results of its state-wide candidate surveys. Every major -party candidate for office in Maryland was given the opportunity to respond to five statements that reflect the Church's position on key issues. The surveys asked candidates for state office to agree or disagree with statements on abortion funding, poverty assistance, K-12 education, immigration, and physician-assisted suicide. Candidates for Congress were asked to agree or disagree with statements on conscience protections, poverty assistance, immigration, educational options, and healthcare. All of the candidate responses, along with election information, can be found by visiting: www.mdcatholic.org/elections. Note: The Maryland Catholic Conference does not endorse or oppose any candidate for elected office and no inference of endorsement or opposition should be concluded as a result of the information provided in the surveys.

STEWARDSHIP In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus? PARISH SUPPORT FOR OCTOBER 7, 2018 (* not including Faith Direct) * Offertory $11,185 * October 8, 2017 $13,642.00

SECOND COLLECTION: ST. JANE DE CHANTAL YOUTH The second collection this weekend, October 13/14, will benefit our parish high school Youth Ministry and altar servers programs. Hundreds of parish children and teens benefit from these programs. SECOND COLLECTION: WORLD MISSIONS The second collection next weekend, October 20/21, will be the annual collection supporting World Missions. This collection reminds us of Our Lord's great commission to the Church to go into the whole world to proclaim the faith (Matthew 28:19). The World Missions collection is unique in that it is a global effort for the entire Church. It is a moment each year to provide for the building up of over one thousand churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the globe. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy that renews hope and peace. For more information, contact Jenean Jones (301-853-4527) or Sr. Annai (301-853-4528) in the archdiocesan Office of Missions. Thank you for your generosity. RESPECT LIFE MONTH: POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, October 20/21, will benefit Right to Life of Montgomery County, a chapter of Maryland Right to Life, whose mission is to work in the legislative arena to attain legal protection for all innocent human life and work to educate the general public about life issues.
