IN OUR PARISH WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish: ♦ Timothy & Angela Lehman ♦ Carol Highsaw If you attend Mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal regularly, we encourage you to register as a member. Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket the next time you attend Mass. ALL SAINTS DAY Because November 1 falls on a Saturday this year, the Solemnity of All Saints is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Only the 8:00 am Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 1 for the Feast of All Saints. ALL SOULS DAY The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) takes place on Sunday, November 2. Since this Feast Day is a Solemnity, when it falls on a Sunday, it takes precedence over the regular Sunday in Ordinary Time. (November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year because it falls on a Saturday). St. Jane’s Parish will celebrate a special service of Solemn Vespers for the Commemoration of all of the Faithful Departed on Sunday, November 2 at 3:30 pm. Praying Vespers (part of the Liturgy of the Hours/Divine Office) is an ancient tradition of the Church that, together with the Mass, constitutes the Church’s public prayer life. The origins of this service date back to our Jewish roots

when it was common for worshippers to recite different prayers at certain hours during the day. Priests are canonically required to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and after the Second Vatican Council, much emphasis was placed on laity to pray the Hours, as well. We especially invite all family members and friends of deceased who were buried from St. Jane’s this past year to attend this liturgy. A special candle with the name of their deceased loved one will be lit and distributed during the service. The service will be preceded by a 30-minute organ recital by our Assistant Music Director, Andrew Vu, beginning at 3:00 pm. SODALITY COMMUNION BREAKFAST The Sodality will be inducting new members during the 10:00 am Mass next Sunday, November 2. Following the Mass, Sodality invites all parishioners to celebrate the induction at our annual Communion Breakfast. This year’s dynamic speaker will be Melissa Overmyer. She is the founder of the Georgetown Women’s Bible Study Group and has been teaching the Bible for over 25 years. Mrs. Overmyer was also on the Board of Walking with Purpose, a Catholic women’s Scripture study program, and has just finished writing a book called Metamorphosis of a Soul. The cost of this catered event is $25.00 per person. To RSVP and for more information, contact Poupee Nisos at [email protected] or 301-530-6094. MEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAM Are you looking to deepen your relationship with God? Be a better husband? Become a more loving father? Build friendships with other like-minded men? And seek to be

ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH the best man you can be? Then come join us for That Man is You! (TMIY), a program designed for actively parenting fathers, Saturday mornings in Caulfield Hall. Light breakfast and fellowship from 6:00-6:30 am followed by program material and discussion from 6:30-7:30 am. It is never too late to start the program. The topic for November 1 will be Integrity of Action. For more information, contact Tim Gleeson at 240-338-2899. PARISH WEBSITE The Pastoral Council Communications Committee is looking for a volunteer with web experience with a particular focus in website design. Any amount of time would be appreciated and you can work at your own pace. If you have the skill-set and the interest in sharing your ideas to help enhance our parish website, contact Jamie Caulfield at [email protected] or 301-252-0102.

REMEMBER IN PRAYER . . . those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Isabelle Fitzpatrick, Fr. Stanislaw Podlewski, Colette McNickle, Alyssa Malcomson, Greg Kramlich, Marisa Spadaro, Mary Jane Kelly, Betty Hannan, Pat Flaherty, Maureen Stradley, and Joseph Dzialo.

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at www.stjanedechantal.org for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. YOUTH MINISTRY SMASH Teens are reminded to attend the first Sunday of the month SMASH (Sunday Mass and Social Hour) on November 2. Mass begins at 5:00 pm. We are in need of ushers and lectors; see Sally before Mass to volunteer. After Mass, we will be having a Thanksgiving themed meal, activities, and free time with your friends at the Seton Center.

IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES As an organist, I have the ability to affect the mood and

BETHESDA, MARYLAND atmosphere of a liturgy with the music that I offer. Sometimes, my sense of humor seeps in when I'm at the console. For example, I once played for a friend's wedding in West Palm Beach and the groom was a dinosaur buff, so after the exchange of vows and during the lighting of the “unity candle,” I played some background music that sounded suspiciously close to the soundtrack of the movie, "Jurassic Park." Likewise, when I was working at the Shrine, there was a baby who cried nonstop through an entire liturgy, filling the great upper church with screams, sobs, and wailing. At communion time, I chose to improvise on the hymn, "Let all mortal flesh keep silence." I think only a select few got the reference, but that's my humor at work. In the Gospel of Matthew, 19:14, Jesus says, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” As a parish, it is a wonderful sign to have so many kids present for Sunday Mass. We offer a wonderful Children's Liturgy of the Word ministry during the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass for our young parishioners. This activity is led by several extremely dedicated volunteers, to whom we are grateful to for their service. (We are always looking for more help with this ministry, as well!) I encourage families with kids to become involved with our Children's Liturgy of the Word ministry. Additionally, all families with small children are welcome to use our "crying room," located to the right in the gathering space. We ask that this space be reserved for families with children who like to vocalize during Mass. I know that there are some comfortable chairs in this room, but know that there are comfortable chairs in the choir section, as well! Together, we work to offer our parishioners with options that not only foster a prayerful environment for them and for those around them, but also opportunities for child education in the faith. I smile when I hear a baby cry in church because I immediately think to myself "that kid has a great set of lungs to be a future choir member!"

IN OUR YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP This new parish group is for single Catholics, ages 22-35, who meet monthly for spiritual and social events. To get plugged in to all our events, find us on Facebook (St. Jane's Young Adult Fellowship) or email [email protected].

Before the walk, students gathered for a presentation by the eighth grade and a Prezi by Ava Brugger on homelessness and its personal impact on children. Students walked in support of Mary House, which was started by Bill and Sharon Murphy over thirty years ago when they invited a homeless family to share their home. Mary House now shelters and serves over fifty families in homes throughout the metropolitan area.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME information on the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, visit www.milarch.org. LEARN, PRAY, VOTE: ASSISTED SUICIDE There is a bright line between providing patients with adequate pain management and actively providing a patient with the means to commit suicide. Our Catholic faith should guide our decisions as we prepare for the end of our lives and share our wishes with loved ones. This Fall, voters will elect a new governor, as well as congressional representatives, and the entire Maryland General Assembly. Learn about the issues, pray for guidance, and vote on November 4. Learn more at www.adw.org/faithfulcitizenship.

Priests do contribute to their own retirement through 403B and Social Security, but keep in mind that their salaries are modest. Our archdiocesan priests have been there for you and your families; please be there for them to assist in the dignity of their retirement and to honor their lives of services. Special envelopes will be available next weekend which will allow you to make a credit card donation. (Please note: if you make a donation by credit card using the in-pew envelope, your donation will be processed and acknowledged by the Archdiocese of Washington, and will not appear on your St. Jane de Chantal year-end contribution statement.) Thank you for your consideration and generosity in making this collection a record success. COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN Please remember the St. Jane de Chantal School Endowment Fund (CFC # 32653) if you participate in this charitable campaign. The campaign ends December 15. POOR BOX Thank you for your contributions of $276.00 to So Others Might Eat. The Poor Box next weekend, November 1/2, will benefit the Msgr.
