FEBRUARY 14, 2016

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, there are two ways in which we can experience mercy; we can receive mercy, and we can offer mercy. Most of us understand that we can receive mercy by attending Mass and by practicing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but many of us do not know that we can also give mercy. This can be accomplished by engaging in a Corporal Work of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs and by which we respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. We are blessed to be part of a large and active parish church with many ministries and activities. Underneath each of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy listed below are some ideas for how you can contribute through a parish ministry. 1. Feed the hungry: Give time or resources to our parish’s SOME, Shepherd’s Table, Bethesda Cares, or Meals on Wheels ministries. Drop off non-perishable goods in the food basket located in the Gathering Space of church. 2. Give drink to the thirsty: Follow the advice of our Parish Environmental Committee and be sure not to waste water at home. Offer bottled water to shelters. Become a Eucharistic Minister so that you can offer the Blood of Christ to those who are “spiritually” thirsting. 3. Shelter the homeless: Give time or resources to our parish’s Saint Martin’s Cloak Ministry or assist with our Justice and Advocacy Councils. Instead of throwing out clothes that do not fit, drop them in our clothing donation bin located on the parking lot. 4. Visit the sick: Join our Parish Ladies of Charity group and visit our parishioners who are hospitalized. Become a Eucharistic Minister and take the Body of Christ to those who are sick and homebound. 5. Visit the prisoners: Volunteer in our Parish’s Welcome Home ministry. 6. Bury the dead: Join our Parish Bereavement Committee ministry 7. Give alms to the poor: Support our parish by contributing to its charitable and outreach efforts. Participate in the “Operation Rice Bowl” during Lent.

LENT IN OUR PARISH VOCATIONS T REE Please take a moment today to stop by the “Vocations Tree” in the Gathering Space of church. This year’s tree has cards for all 74 of the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Washington. Please choose one or more cards and pray for that seminarian each day during Lent. Make it a beautiful offering to the Lord this Lent to pray for those the Lord calls to give their lives in service of His Church in our archdiocese. LENTEN BOOK PROGRAM This Lent, St. Jane is partnering with the Dynamic Catholic Institute (dynamiccatholic.com) to give a free copy of Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly to every family at our parish. This book discusses the essence of authentic Catholic spirituality and addresses some of the most important questions we face today both as individuals and as a Church. All are invited to read this book and engage in weekly discussions guided by Fr. Giese every Tuesday evening during Lent, beginning February 16, at 7:30 pm in the main church. Books will be handed out after each Mass this weekend, February 13/14. Make the most out of your Lenten experience this year by walking with your St. Jane community on this six-week spiritual journey to a deeper relationship with Christ and His Church. CRS RICE BOWL: HUNGERING FOR THE JOURNEY Join our parish community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing

Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s rice bowl from the Gathering Space of church, and don’t forget to download the CRS Rice Bowl app! Remember, what you give up for Lent changes lives. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent (through March 18) at 7:30 pm, and on Good Friday (March 25) at 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. All will take place in the church. CONFESSIONS This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Washington will have confessions available every Wednesday evening from 6:45-8:00 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. Learn more at www.the-light-is-on.org. Confessions are also heard at St. Jane each Saturday afternoon, 3:45-4:45 pm.

FESTIVAL CHOIR Parishioners and friends interested in joining our parish’s seasonal Festival Choir are invited to choir rehearsals beginning Thursday, February 18, at 8:00 pm, in the Music Room, located in the lower level of church. The enhanced choir will offer music during Holy Week Liturgies, including the three day Triduum. JOIN MUSIC MINISTRY St. Augustine reminds us, “those who sing pray twice.” If you have musical experience, consider sharing your God given gifts by joining one of our Parish Music Ministry groups. The Parish Choir rehearses on Thursday evening at 8:00 pm and sings for the 10:00 am Mass. If you can read music, you might consider joining the Handbell Ensemble, which rehearses on Thursdays at 7:00 pm and rings at one Mass per month. Adults and families who enjoy contemporary music are welcome to join our Family Choir at the noon Mass, which rehearses on Sundays at 11:00 am. Young parishioners are needed to join our new Youth Contemporary Ensemble as singers and instrumentalists at the 5:00 pm Mass, which will rehearse at 3:30 pm on Sundays. No previous experience necessary. Being a

BETHESDA, MARYLAND Music Minister is fun, and a wonderful way to serve God and our parish community. For more information, email [email protected] or call the Parish Office (301-530-1550).

All high school students welcome! Meet in the Seton Center on Sundays at 6:00 pm. Reminder: The youth are going on a retreat at Mount St. Mary’s on February 5-7 and there will not be a SMASH meeting on February 7. Please keep each of the teens in your prayers. OPEN HOUSE We welcome all prospective families to attend our Open House on Monday, February 29, from 9:00 to 11:00 am. All classrooms from Pre-K to Grade 8 will be open for visitors. The Open House provides an excellent opportunity for interested families to visit our “Best of Bethesda” school, experience our “Blue Ribbon” curriculum, and speak with teachers. Information about enrollment and applications will be available. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Students celebrated Catholic School’s Week with a rousing game of Math Bingo with the entire student body on Monday, a school Spelling Bee on Thursday, and a beautiful school Mass led by Father Cusick on Friday. Students decorated the hallways with essays, photos, and artwork to commemorate why they “Love de Chantal.” The school demonstrated its appreciation for the students, the community, the teachers, the administration, and the parents with cards, flowers, lunch, and special treats. Our school would not be as incredible as it is without the support from all of these important people. Thank you for making us such an excellent school! ANNUAL SPELLING BEE The annual spelling bee, led by teachers Mr. Dugan and Mrs. Theim, took place on Thursday afternoon in front of an excited school audience ready to cheer on the contestants. Two students from each grade were selected to participate. The 2016 winner who will represent de Chantal at the regional spelling bee is eighth grader Anna Owens. Congratulations to our runner up, eighth grader Henry Ilonaya and all of the contestants.

Permanent deacons are ordained clergy who have received the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Deacons are called to a special ministry of service through which they assist the needy, the hungry, the sick, the homeless, the imprisoned, immigrants, and others. As ministers of God’s Word, deacons proclaim the Gospel at Mass, preach and teach. They also exercise various liturgical roles, including baptizing, witnessing marriages, presiding at funerals and wake services, and serving as ordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Applicants must be baptized Catholic men between the ages of thirty and sixty (at the time the formation program begins), active in the parish, and recommended by their pastors. RSVP to Diane Biggs at 301-853-5345 or [email protected]. For more information, contact contact Deacon Desi Vikor, Director of Formation, at 301-853-4582 or [email protected].
