Concluding Hymn........................................ The Glory of These Forty Days .......................................................... #467 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES The word “homily” is taken from the Greek word, homilia, which roughly means, “to hold a conversation.” A homily is not a sermon. The homily is a scripturally-based reflection, while a sermon is a speech on religious instruction. The aim of the homily rhetoric is to bring meaning to the readings that have just been proclaimed. A few funny stories about homilies: In the 16th century, the organist of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Giovanni Gabrieli, was viewed as a celebrity during his day, and his stature was much higher than that of the priests in that he was able to impose fines on them if they preached too long. A few centuries later, Camille Saint-Saëns was asked by the pastor of the Church of the Madeleine in Paris to play organ music that resembled the music of comic opera so as to entertain parishioners during Mass. Saint-Saëns replied to the pastor saying that he would refrain from playing comical music until the pastor preached comical homilies from the pulpit. Lastly, Newark’s Cathedral-Basilica of the Sacred Heart is an immense and beautiful edifice. In it is a grand pulpit decorated with carved depictions of the saints. One of the saints is St. Ambrose – known to be the patron saint of brevity. Next time you think that the homily is going a little long, you may want to pray to St. Ambrose. Finishing the Liturgy of the Word is the recitation of the creed and the Prayer of the Faithful. The creed, otherwise known as the Profession of Faith, is a public manifestation of the mysteries of our faith. The Prayer of the Faithful, or General Intercessions, are prayers composed by the parish to pray for the needs of the Church, nation, and local community. Following the prayers, the congregation is seated for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

LENT IN OUR PARISH STABAT MATER Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi will be performed next Sunday, March 15, at 3:30 pm, in church. A favorite among Lenten musical reflections, the Stabat Mater (The Sorrowful Mother) is a musical selection that meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. This admired work is performed by St. Jane’s staff singers, Grace Gilday, soprano, and Stephanie Conticchio, alto, along with the Celebrated String Quartet and Andrew Vu, organ. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent (March 13-27) at 7:30 pm; St. Jane’s Youth Ministry will offer a beautiful live enactment of the Stations on March 13. Stations will also be held on Good Friday (April 3) at 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. All will

take place in the church. CONFESSIONS This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the archdiocese will offer the sacrament of penance every Wednesday evening. Confessions are heard at St. Jane on Wednesdays from 6:45-8:15 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time, or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. Learn more at www.thelightison.org. Confessions are heard at St. Jane every Saturday, 3:45-4:45 pm.

There is a procedure for preparation required by both the archdiocese and the hospital.

IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES ADDITIONAL USHERS NEEDED Ushers are an integral part of our parish worship experience. They greet us at the door, hand us a bulletin, find us seating, organize the offertory, and keep our pews clutter-free. We currently need new recruits for this vital ministry. Adults young and old are encouraged to join the ranks of our beloved ushers. If you are interested, call the parish office. MUSIC MINISTRY RECRUITMENT It is never too late to join one of our parish music ministries. Are you new to the parish? Being involved with one of our choirs is a wonderful way to meet fellow parishioners and to be actively involved in the vibrant life of St. Jane’s. The Parish Choir is in need of six additional tenors. For more information, see the music pages on the parish web site. HYMNAL RIBBONS A few parishioners have approached asking why the new hymnals do not have ribbon bookmarks in them. The publisher no longer makes the hymnals with ribbon bookmarks because of the tendency for the ribbon to become frayed. Therefore, we did not have the option of purchasing hymnals with bookmarks. For the time being, if you miss having a ribbon, use your bulletin or offering envelope as a bookmark. We will look into inexpensive ways to add ribbon bookmarks.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT LENTEN MEDITATION HIKE Welcome spring by getting outside for a scenic hike on Saturday, March 21! We will discuss some points to meditate on before setting off as "a group in solitude." We will stay together as a group but the intention is not to talk, but rather to reflect and meditate as we engage in God’s creation. After the hike, we will discuss the experience over hot chocolate or another weather-appropriate snack!

IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at www.dechantal.org to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. DO THE DASH The De Chantal Dash 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held on Saturday, April 25. This bi-annual event will raise money for St. Jane de Chantal's “Field Improvement Fund.” Improvement with drainage and footings are needed in order to offer a safe place for both school and parish activities. Register at www.imathlete.com/events/ DeChantalDash. We are also looking for companies, businesses, and families to consider sponsoring this popular event. See your family name or company logo on the back of over 600 race shirts! Sponsor forms can be found in the back of church or at www.imathlete.com/ events/DeChantalDash. Questions? Email us at [email protected].

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at www.stjanedechantal.org for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. YOUTH MINISTRY STATIONS OF THE CROSS Youth Ministry will be portraying a living Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 13 at 7:30 pm. Any high school student is welcome to join in. The final practice will take place this Monday, March 9, at 7:00 pm in the church. YOUTH MINISTRY ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Teens are invited to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament on Sunday night, March 15. Meet in the church at 6:15 pm. Jesus is present to us in His precious Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Pope Emeritus Benedict said, “We Christians kneel only before God or before the Most Blessed Sacrament because we know and believe that the one true God is present in it, the God who created the world and so loved it that he gave his Only Begotten Son.”

IN OUR YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP For single Catholics, ages 22-35. Meet monthly for spiritual and social events. To get plugged in to all our events, find us on Facebook (St. Jane's Young Adult Fellowship) or email [email protected].

“You shall not covet” is perhaps a difficult commandment to keep in our consumer-oriented society. But as Christian stewards, we know that we are the recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this understanding that all is gift help us be less resentful of the gifts of others. PARISH SUPPORT

The collection is directed to three geographic areas where the Church is experiencing considerable challenges through growth, rebuilding, and general need. The collection supports basic ministries and services in catechetics, education, liturgy, and in providing physical structures for their churches, things we often can take for granted in our archdiocese. POOR BOX Thank you for your contributions of $100.00 to So Others Might Eat. The Poor Box next weekend, March 14/15, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak.

“‘Return to me with all your heart’ (Joel 2:12). To return to the Lord ‘with all [one’s] heart,’ means taking the pat h of a conversion that is neither superficial nor transient, but is a spiritual journey that reaches the deepest place of our self. The heart, in fact, is the seat of our sentiments, the center in which our decisions and our attitudes mature.” Homily, Pope Francis, 18 February 2015., w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/ en/homilies/2015/ index.html#homilies.
