Louis Vierne MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES (Continued from last week is a series of reflections on worshipping abroad. First up is the Saturday vigil Mass in Hamburg’s Mariendom.) Hamburg’s Mariendom (St. Mary’s Cathedral) is close to the city’s train station and its impressive towers soar among the downtown landscape. The current cathedral dates to 1893, but succeeds two former structures, the original dating from year 811. Inside, the cathedral’s stark white interior reminds one of the destruction caused by World War II. Much of the cathedral was destroyed during the war and its artwork and stained glass were forever lost. Post-war rebuilding efforts were successful, and, as with many German buildings, its modern restoration serves as a reminder of a dark past. The only visual extravagance is a beautiful gold mosaic in the apse, noticeably similar to St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and a large Beckerath pipe organ in the rear choir gallery. Like most European churches, both large and small, some pretty loud bells announce the start of Mass. Finding my seat, I wondered if the pew and kneeler were remnants of the original 811 church. In many European churches, both are just a simple wooden plank with no padding; not comfortable at all, but upon glancing at the large crucifix above the altar, I’m reminded that my temporary discomfort is nothing compared to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The Mass was wellattended with many millennials in the pews. This was nice to witness, especially considering Europe’s increasingly secular persuasion. I would say that the most obvious difference between our liturgical style and the liturgical style of Germany is the large role played by the congregation. This includes singing. It makes perfect sense: In a post-Vatican II Mass, the participation of the congregation plays a large part in the worship experience. Just as various spoken parts are led by the people, not the priest, so also with music. The hymns and service music are part of the people’s role and congregational singing, part of Germany’s Protestant culture, has been globally adopted and is well-practiced in Germany’s Catholic Church (even during daily Mass). For example, there was no cantor and all of the singing was given to the people, who all sang with the organ (which is the original and intended liturgical role of the instrument), not a soloist. Even the psalm text was sung as a hymn and not in the usual “responsorial” fashion. It was clear to me that as a congregant that my full participation, both spoken and sung, was not optional. In the end, this created a sense of community and fellowship among myself and the strangers around me. Despite attending Mass in a foreign country with a language that I am not totally comfortable with, it was easy to feel comfortable and included. This is one of my favorite gifts of our faith; it meets us in whichever church we chose to worship. Although mein Deutsche ist nicht so gut, I felt welcomed and included in the Mass, particularly because the priest had an excellent presiding style and paced the liturgy well. The priest’s actions always kept the congregation in mind and Mass was more of a prayerful dialog rather than a “one man show.” In conclusion, in all honesty, it would have been easier to worship as a spectator, but that would have drawn attention to myself and I would not have gotten as much out of the Mass without my sincere participation attempts. The only awkward moment came at the sign of peace. While everyone around me offered to shake my hand, I didn’t know how to say “peace be with you” in German, so I just smiled and nodded. Next week I will speak more about a Lutheran service that I attended on Sunday morning in one of Hamburg’s five main Lutheran churches, known as Hauptkirchen.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD In the past, our parish has offered a Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry to children between the ages of 5 and 10 at the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass. This program was unfortunately cancelled last Fall due to a lack of volunteer leadership. However, we would like to revive this vital ministry for the remainder of the Winter and Spring months. At Mass, after the Opening Prayer, the children leave the church with adult leaders and go down to the Scanlon Meeting Room where they have the readings proclaimed to them on their own level with a presentation/dialogue about the readings. After the children have completed their Liturgy of the Word, they return to the main church sometime during the offertory. In order for us to provide this offering for our children, the assistance of several adults is necessary in order to prepare the readings, and to lead the presentation and dialogue with the children. Interested persons should contact Russell Weismann, Director of Liturgy and Music, at the parish office. This is a wonderful way for our adults to share with our children the Catholic faith. All adults need to complete the archdiocesan Virtus/ Protecting God’s Children training and clearance protocol.

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at www.stjanedechantal.org for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL'S WEEK To prepare for Catholic School's week, students have been writing essays, drawing pictures, and practicing speeches about the many reasons why they love our Catholic school. Look for students speaking during this weekends' Masses about their love for St. Jane de Chantal to kick off Catholic School's Week. This is a week where our parish comes together to thank students, teachers, administration, priests,

community helpers, and school volunteers who make St. Jane de Chantal a loving, faith-filled school for all children.

“Christian prayer is born of faith in Jesus and always goes with faith beyond difficulties. A phrase to carry in our hearts will help us, from our father Abraham, to whom the inheritance was promised, that is, to have a child at the age of 100. The apostle Paul says: ‘Believe’ and with this he was justified. Faith and to ‘set out’ in faith and do everything to get to that grace that I am asking for. The Lord told us: ‘Ask and it will be given to you.’ We also take this Word and we trust, but always with faith and putting ourselves at stake. This is the courage that Christian prayer has.” Pope Francis, homily 12 Jan. 2018, Casa Santa Marta.
