BETHESDA, MARYLAND

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR THE

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / YEAR B

Entrance Antiphon Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice. (Ps 48:10-11) Entrance Hymn ........................................... God Has Spoken by the Prophets ........................................................... #592 ....................................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) Sing a New Song .............................................................. #600 Gloria ................................................................ from Congregational Mass ................................................................ #324 ....................................................................(Sun. 5 pm) from Mass of Creation .......................................................... #323 Reading I .................................................................... Ezekiel 2:2–5 Ezekiel’s call to be a prophet includes a warning that he will not be heeded or understood. Still, that is no reason for him not to carry God’s Word even to those who are “hard of face and obstinate of heart.” Responsorial Psalm ............................. Psalm 123: Our eyes are fixed on the Lord .................................................. #1149 This psalm of quiet confidence describes the people as a servant watching the hands of her mistress because those hands are the source not only of peremptory commands but also of blessings. ..................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) Psalm 95: If today you hear God’s voice ................................. David Haas

Music: © 1983, 1994 GIA Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net A-701331.

Reading II ............................................................. 2 Corinthians 12:7–10 The mysterious “thorn in the flesh” was some sort of affliction that Paul suffered for a long time. Whether it was physical or mental we do not know. We do know that he associated it with his own failures and with his faith that God’s grace is sufficient, even in such incurable suffering. Gospel Acclamation .................................................... Celtic Alleluia ........................................................................... #333 Gospel ........................................................................... Mark 6:1-6 Jesus is scandalous to his neighbors. They know him as ordinary, of no special skills, yet he teaches in the synagogue as one with learning and power. He is “the carpenter, the son of Mary,” so he could not possibly, in their eyes, be a prophet. Lack of faith limits his ability to perform “mighty deeds” that reveal the presence (or near-presence) of God’s kingdom. Preparation of the Gifts .................................Holy God, We Praise Thy Name ............................................................ #614 ......................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) Praise to You, O Christ, Our Savior................................................ #594 Preface Acclamation ............................... Holy, Holy, Holy from Mass of Creation ...................................................... #365 Memorial Acclamation ...................... When we eat this bread from Mass of Creation ................................................ #366 Great Amen ..........................................................from Mass of Creation .................................................................... #367 Breaking of the Bread ..................... Lamb of God from Mass of the Angels and Saints .............................................. #383

I Am the Bread of Life ...................................................................... #950 Concluding Hymn .................................................. IN OUR PARISH Can’t find the bulletin you brought home from church? Want to keep up on what’s happening in the parish even when you are away on vacation or sick in bed? Visit our parish website, www.stjanedechantal.org to view a copy of the bulletin and for more information on parish events and organizations. WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish. If you attend Mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal regularly, we encourage you to register as a member. Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket when you attend Mass. ST. M ARTIN’S CLOAK SUMMER SOAP AND SHAMPOO DRIVE This summer, when you travel and stay in hotels or motels, please consider retrieving the bars of unused soap and vials of shampoo provided in your rooms. Since the cost is included your daily room bill, they are yours to take with you if you do not use them during your stay. When you return from your vacation, bring them to our parish’s St. Martin’s Cloak Summer Collection baskets in the Gathering Space of church. The contents of the baskets will be distributed periodically throughout the summer to Shepherds Table in Silver Spring, or to SOME or Father McKenna Center in the District. These centers provide toiletries and/or shower facilities for the homeless to maintain personal hygiene and the self-respect which that reflects. We will be collecting these items now through Labor Day weekend. If you have questions about this initiative, call Paul Eder at 301-9566273. TOUR THE MOCO RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY The St. Jane Frances de Chantal Environmental Committee invites any interested adult to join in a tour of the Resource Recovery Facility and Composting Facility in Dickerson, Maryland, on Thursday, July 19. Leave from the St. Jane parking lot at 8:45 am, or meet at the Dickerson facility. The

Resource Recovery Facility tour will begin at 10:00 am, and lasts approximately 1.5 hours; the Composting Facility, begins at 1:00 pm, and runs approximately 30 minutes. Bring a lunch for the break between tours. For more information and/or to reserve a spot on the tour, call Maureen Wilkerson at 240-432-5752. This tour can only accommodate 30 people. The Resource Recovery Facility processes over 1,500 tons of solid waste daily and provides up to 55 megawatts of energy daily which is enough power to fuel 40,000 homes. Check it out at www.nmwda.org/ montgomery-county. PARISH OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Occasionally, the Parish Office needs a few hours of weekday help in covering the front desk. You would be answering the phone, sorting the mail, and greeting visitors. If you would like to add your name to the list of occasional front desk volunteers, contact the Parish Office at 301-5301550.

REMEMBER IN PRAYER . . . those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially John and Pat Krisko. . . . those who have died, especially John McNamara.

IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES Visit the Music Ministries page at www.stjanedechantal.org/ministries/music-ministry for information on the many music ensembles at St. Jane. USHERS NEEDED We are in need of additional ushers to minister at the 12:00 noon and Sunday 5:00 pm Masses. The usher ministry does not require a weekly commitment and can coordinated with your personal schedule. Training is provided on site. If interested, call the parish office to leave your name.

SUMMER WEEKDAY MASS SCHEDULE The weekday (Monday through Friday) 11:00 am Mass has been suspended during the St. Jane de Chantal School summer vacation. The 11:00 am Mass will resume on Tuesday, September 4.

ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH SACRISTAN HELP We are in need of a volunteer to help with work in our church sacristy during the week. The tasks involved include changing candles, organizing vestments, washing communion vessels, and generally helping to maintain an overall tidy appearance of our beautiful sacred space. If you are able to help, call the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at www.stjanedechantal.org for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. 2018-2019 FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION Registration for next year’s Faith Formation year is under way. We have classes for Pre-K3/4 through eighth grade, as well as High School Teen Ministry. Pre-K3/4 and Kindergarten meet on Sundays during the 10:00 am Mass. Grades 1–8 meet on Tuesdays from 6:00–7:15 pm. Classes for first Communion and confirmation are also being formed. A child is not automatically enrolled in the sacraments of first Communion and confirmation. If you would like to enroll your child in the sacraments or would like more information, contact Sally Daniel at [email protected] or 301-530-1640. Register your child at http://stjanedechantal.org/faithformation/religious-ed-k-8/register. 2018-2019 HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY REGISTRATION High School Teen Ministry is a great way for our teens to stay in contact with friends they have made while at St. Jane’s School or CCD, as well as to stay connected to the parish. High School Youth Ministry is not CCD for high schools students. While there are times we focus on a particular topic of faith and life, everything we do is to help the students grow in their faith and live it out, through things like social activities, service opportunities, parish involvement, and retreats. High School Teen Ministry meets about three times a month, mostly on Sundays from 6:00– 8:00 pm, with an occasional outing outside of that time. There is a teen leadership team who assists with the youth ministry. Register at http://stjanedechantal.org/faithformation/religious-ed-k-8/register. CCD TEACHERS, CO-TEACHERS, & DOOR/HALL MONITORS CCD teachers are needed in grades K, 1, 2, 5, and 6; coteachers/aides are needed in grades 1-8 for next year. Three door/hall monitors are also needed. These are vital ministries in the parish so that our young people can learn and grow in their faith. You do not need to have teaching experience to teach the faith, only a love of the faith and a love of being with children. Training and help will be given with materials to use, in-service, as well as a guidebook on planning lessons. The Virtus child protection background check, which can be completed in the summer, must be completed before volunteering can begin. If you would like more information or to volunteer, contact Sally Daniel at [email protected] or 301-530-1640.

STEWARDSHIP During this time, we celebrate the independence of our country. FOCUS ON EVANGELIZATION

Most people enjoy hearing a good story around a summer bonfire. Like an eager storyteller, always be ready to tell yours! Identify ways in which God has been with you "in good times and in bad." Find opportunities to give first -hand testimony to the relevance of the Scriptures, and to the love and power of the living God. By candidly sharing how God has worked in your life, the faith of the practicing might be deepened, while the Gospel will become enfleshed for those seeking meaning in their lives. Remember: before the Scriptures were written, the faith was passed on orally. Sharing your testimony can enrich another person's faith and make the Word of God come alive.

Reading II Eph 1:3-14 or 1:3-10

SATURDAY, JULY 14

Sunday

“The only credible form of authority is born of sitting at the feet of others in order to serve Christ. It is the authority that comes from never forgetting that Jesus, before bowing his head on the cross, did not hesitate to bow down and wash the feet of the disciples. This is the highest honour that we can receive, the greatest promotion that can be awarded us: to serve Christ in God’s faithful people. [...] None of us should look down at others from above. The only time we can look at a person in this way is when we are helping them to stand up.”
