THE ORDER OF WORSHIP BETHESDA, MARYLAND

FOR THE

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / YEAR B

Entrance Hymn ............................................... Lord, Help Us Walk Your Servant Way | #779 ....................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service | #780 Gloria ............................. from Mass in Honor of Saint Ignatius | inside Worship back cover ............................................................................. (Sun. 5 pm) from Mass of Creation | #323 Readings in Worship hymnal at #1182

Responsorial Psalm ............................................Psalm 54: The Lord upholds my life | #1182 ...................................................... (Sun. 5 pm) Psalm 91: Be with me, Lord | Marty Haugen

Entrance Antiphon I am the salvation of the people, says the Lord. Should they cry to me in any distress, I will hear them, and I will be their Lord for ever. (GM 485) Reading I: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 No good deed goes unpunished, the cynics say. This text seems to suggest that the cynics are right.

Gospel Acclamation ........................................................................................ Alleluia | #208 ..............................................................(Sun. 5 pm) from Mass of Creation | Marty Haugen

Psalm Response: Ps 54 This individual lament calls on God’s help in a time of persecution. Reading II: James 3:16-4:3 God’s presence is revealed in the behavior of the community. Where God is, there are peace, mercy, and good fruits. Our primary call is as children of God, living by God’s wisdom. Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 On the journey, Jesus repeats the “messianic secret”— that the Son of Man is to be killed but will rise on the third day. The way of life to be inaugurated by this death and resurrection is not one of competing privilege but one that embraces humble service in Christ’s name. Communion Antiphon You have laid down your precepts to be carefully kept; may my ways be firm in keeping your statutes. (Ps 119: 4-5)

The Family Choir, which ministers with contemporary music at the Sunday 5:00 pm Mass, is accepting new members as singers and instrumentalists. For singers, no prior choral experience is necessary, and instrumentalists, including pianists, are asked to have achieved at least an intermediate level. The Family Choir rehearses at 4:00 pm on Sundays in the Music Room. The Parish Choir, which ministers at the Sunday 10:00 am Mass, is accepting new members. Prior choral experience is preferred, although the ability to read music is not necessary. The Parish Choir has established a wonderful reputation for our parish and in order to maintain their level of ministry, new members are needed in the Bass section. STEWARDSHIP Today’s second reading warns that a heart consumed with avarice and envy leads to jealousy, strife, conflicts, and disputes. A giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead with the psalmist, “Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness.” (Ps 54) PARISH SUPPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 (* not including Faith Direct) * Offertory $9,411.00 * September 17, 2017 $9,384.00 Attendance 1280 September 17, 2017 1423 FAITH DIRECT FOR SEPTEMBER 2018 Offertory (5 Sundays) $47,820.00 September 2017 (4 Sundays) $41,181.00 POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, September 29/30, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak.
