The Rock Road SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE:

The Rev. Dick Elwood, Interim Rector

CHANGING BAD SPIRITUAL HABITS INTO GOOD SPIRITUAL HABITS On the back of the Worship Program for Sunday, January 15, you received a list of the seven habits by which Jesus lived his life. They are spiritual habits because they enabled Jesus to come into relationship with the Living God, and to become the person he was meant to be, and that he wanted to be, and to experience the deep satisfaction

The Rev. Thomas Murray III, Associate Rector

that Jesus called JOY. If going to church is a good spiritual habit, not going regularly, Sunday by Sunday, is a bad habit. If daily prayer to God is a good habit, not praying daily is a bad habit. You can go through all of the seven habits and find, the opposite of them are bad habits, because they are what keep us away from God, and they keep us away from

Janet Boutin, Director, School

becoming the person we are meant to be. I say these things to you now, in February, so you can prepare because Ash Wednesday is March 1. The season of Lent is about changing bad spiritual habits. During Lent we are called to self-examination and repentance, to change your way of behaving, and to change your path moving away from God to moving back to God.

Chrisie Jennings, Parish Administrator

How can you change a bad habit into a good habit? It takes discipline and each of these seven habits is called a “spiritual discipline….that is a plan, a guide, by which you and I are meant to live to become the people we are meant to be and God wants us to be. During February, as we move toward Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent,

Linda Jordan, Dir. Parish Life

prayerfully take the time to determine what your bad spiritual habits are and resolve to change them into habits that are good. God will give us the power to continue and to see it through. God Bless you in this upcoming Lent. Amen

Peter Moments Today is the feast day of the Confession of St. Peter the Apostle. Sitting on the coffee table as you enter my office is a bronze sculpture depicting Matthew 14:22-33, Jesus walking on water and Peter sinking. You remember the setting. John the Baptist has just been beheaded and Jesus has just fed the 5000. He made the disciples get in the boat and go to the other side while he dismissed the crowd they had fed. After the dismissal he went up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night while the wind and waves battered the disciples’ boat came Jesus walking on the water. The disciples were terrified thinking that Jesus was a ghost. Peter, thinking that it may be Jesus, asked to come out to him on the water. Jesus had him come. While walking on the water Peter focused on the waves and he began to sink. Jesus reached out his hand to catch him. Peter is one of my favorite disciples. He is so human, tries so hard, yet always finds a way to get it wrong. Later in Matthew 16:17-19, after Peter’s declaration, Jesus declares Peter the rock on whom he will build his church. Peter was doing it right but for a moment he took his focus off Jesus and the result was his sinking. Does this sound familiar? Yesterday I had one of those “Peter Moments.” I was attempting things in the name of God, good things, yet for one moment, I became distracted with the immediate situation and a rather costly mistake was made but yet it could have been a lot worse. Today my focus is back. Will there be more moments that will overwhelm me and attempt to take away my focus on Jesus? Oh yes they will but remember Jesus’ last words on this earth, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” BLESS !!! Fr. Tom III _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thank you to all of the wonderful ladies who have so faithfully worked in The Cottage Shop this past year…you did it again! You made the ECW budget of $40,000, returned over $21,000 to our consignors, paid the government over $5,400 in taxes and you did it with grace, love and happy faces. We thank our church family for their generous donations and their support in this blessed ministry. The funds have assisted clergy discretionary accounts, St. Peter’s school scholarships, St. Peter’s School operating fund, scholarships to graduating seniors, Dr. Berg’s work in Africa, the Magdalena House and so many other worthy works. Do think about joining us as we continue this outreach ministry project and remember our motto…Shop, donate or volunteer! Blessings and thanks, Cathy Murray

The Rt. Rev. Gary Lillibridge A big thank you to Bishop Lillibridge for his visit to St. Peter’s on January 22nd. This marked his “final” visit to St. Peter’s as Bishop, as he will be retiring. A large group of parishioners showed up to show their support for Bishop Lillibridge as he performed Confirmation/Reaffirmation for a nice-sized group, and First Communion to the littler ones. Bless you Bishop Lillibridge and we wish the best for you in your future.

MUSIC MINISTRIES Warmest Greetings, St. Peter’s ~ As we just finished celebrating Christmas and ringing in the New Year, it's hard to believe that we are now rapidly approaching the season of Lent and

Holy Week. I offer you a most hearty invitation to come join the choir for the astounding journey through Holy Week, or perhaps for the entire season of Lent. Due to Wednesday night programming during Lent, we will be moving our rehearsals to TUESDAY nights from 6:00-7:30 in the choir room. The choir is a lovely group of people who enjoy preparing music to enrich worship, but it is much more than that. St. Peter's Music Ministries is a community that supports one another, lifts each other up in times of joy and sorrow, and shares a deep love of Christ and music. Please consider joining our group, if even just for the season. We would love to have your talent and get to know you! Peace,

Kara Joy Baker

ST. JEROME JOTS In the interest of trying something a little different, our book reviewer for the Wednesday, February 1, 2017, meeting at 2 o'clock in the library will be...

US! If you like, please bring a book to the meeting that you would like to talk a little about. It could be one you have read that is already in the library collection or simply one that you have found interesting and/or inspiring. Our time together will be informal; that is, you don't need to present a formal report. Nothing lengthy, as we hope there will be several books about which to talk. This should be fun, help us learn more about each other, add books to our personal "want to read" lists, and perhaps add to the library collection. We had a good time at the January meeting saying thanks to outgoing president Jennifer Timko. New officers are Susan Parker, president and treasurer; and Capy Alexander, vice president. The position of secretary will be shared by members. Thank you, Father Tom, for installing our officers for 2017. Our next book sale will be Sunday morning, February 19 and Wednesday evening, February 22. Please put these dates on your calendars--you will not want to miss this sale. The books donated from "The Stockton Williams Collection" plus many more will be available for purchase.

A Note from the Senior Warden Thank you to all who attended the ECW Wine share on January 14, and a big thank you to Lou Ann Maxwell, for organizing this special event. Thanks also to all who brought wine and food. The food and wine were delicious, the blind tasting was fun, but the best part was the fellowship. By the time you read this, our Search Committee will be at work looking at names of possible candidates for our new Rector. Please include the search committee members in your daily prayers. Pray for wisdom, patience and discernment. Tucker Hall is going to be a busy place this month. St. Peter’s School is having a fund raiser luncheon on February 9, at noon. Call the school at 257-0257 if you would like to attend. The following Thursday on February 16, at 6:00 PM, Magdalene House will be hosting a dinner theater featuring Jane Leister Elwood in her presentation of An Evening with Mary Magdalene. Call the church office at 257-8162 for more information or to purchase tickets. On February 21, at 10:30 AM the ECW will be hosting a meeting/luncheon with guest speaker Fr. Andrew Sloane of Love for the Least. Please plan to attend this meeting and bring a friend. RSVP to me at [email protected] or call the church office at 257-8162, so that we are sure to have enough food. I hope many of you will attend at least one of these events. All of these fulfill our mission statement: To give glory to God, by knowing Jesus Christ and making Him known to others. Till next time I’ll leave you with this: “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.” 1 Peter 2:21
