ST. JEROME JOTS Christian actress and author Jane Leister Elwood, whose God-given gifts have been channeled into a ministry through drama for the purpose of glorifying Him, will present a book review at the St. Jerome Library Guild meeting on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at 2:00 P.M. in the St. Peter's Church Library. Jane will review Lost Women of the Bible: The Women We Thought We Knew by Carolyn Custis James. Of the book, Jane said, "This book will speak to you about your life. The Biblical women whose stories are presented here are not unknown to us, but every one of them was "lost" in some way, as we have been at certain times in our lives. The author brings into clear focus people and events in scripture that we think we know so well, but she takes us behind the scenes to reveal riveting insights into why these situations were so significant at the time and what they say to us today." For thirty years Jane has portrayed women from the Bible, performing dramatic presentations in front of audiences across the country. She portrayed "Mary, Mother of Jesus" in a Lenten Program at a St. Peter's ECW luncheon meeting on March 6, 2008. A native of Orange, Texas, Jane earned her B.S. degree in Speech Education from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. After traveling the state of Texas as a representative of the university, she taught speech, drama, and English in the Alamo Heights Independent School District in San Antonio. Jane and her husband, The Reverend Richard H. Elwood, currently the Acting Rector at St. Peter's, reside in Fredericksburg, Texas. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity "to learn more about God through spiritual literature in a congenial atmosphere.”

Wednesday Nights @ St. Peter’s Sisters In Scripture: Life Group will meet in the church parlor from 6:30-7:30 pm with Lisa Earl. This Life Group is for young women and moms. The group supports and prays for each other in their daily walks with Christ as well as participate in a Christian book study. King’s Kidz is every Wednesday at 6:30 pm for children age infant through 5 th grade. The children are divided into at least 2 different age groups. The young ones (2 years old and younger) will be in the Children’s Center with a minimum of two St. Peter’s childcare workers. The little ones can play, draw, color, hear about Jesus and even take a nap if they wish. The older children (3 years old through 5th grade) will meet in the Youth Room in Shelton Hall. This group of children will hear a bible story, have a craft project and play outside. King’s Kidz is a loving, safe place that children are able to come and hang out with their friends and have fun while learning about Jesus and His love for each and every child. Please note that if Wednesday Night Supper is not scheduled for any particular Wednesday of the month then there will be no Sisters in Scripture scheduled as well; unless of course there is a special Wednesday night event (i.e. Autumn Event, Advent Event, and Christmas Fiesta).

STONE SOUP

This is a book that has been written several different ways about the same outcome. Three soldiers, or three peasants from another village, comes into a village where no body welcomes outsiders. The story about the soldiers is the one I like to use. The soldiers go door-to-door to try to find somebody who will feed them because they are hungry. After a while of disappointment they come up with an idea about making stone soup. The soldiers find a big black pot and fill it full of water. As they're doing this the villagers are getting curious and want to see what the soldiers are up to. At the same time, the soldiers are talking loud enough for everyone to hear about how good their stone soup is all the time. After the water boils for a little while, the soldiers add three big stones. The villagers, being curious, ask them “what is that for?” and they tell them “this is how we make stone soup.” Then one of the soldier said “stone soup is so good but it's always a little better with maybe one head of cabbage.” One of the villagers then says, "hey I think I've got a head of cabbage" and then another villager says "I think I've got one too.” So the villagers go to their houses pick up the cabbages and then bring them back to the soldiers. The soldiers put them into the soup. The soup begins to boil while more villagers start to show up. One of the soldiers says "this stone soup is going to be so good with this cabbage in it, but it could be so much better with some carrots and potatoes.” Again the villagers help make the soup better. The story continues to grow and so does the soup. After a while stone soup is now a real thick and flavorful soup with a whole bunch of different ingredients in it. This is your introduction into our new and exciting stewardship campaign.

More to come. “We give glory to God by knowing Christ and making Him known to others.”

A WORD FROM FATHER TOM…. Life Orienteering

I have always had a problem with a sense of direction, not spiritual direction but simple geography. I consider myself geographically impaired. I for the life of me cannot read a map and have difficulty following formal North-South, and East-West directions. As a youngster my father and I would take regular backpacking trips in the Sierras. Thank goodness he was there to read the topographical map otherwise I would still be there right now. I dreaded Orienteering in Boy Scouts. I didn’t and still have difficulty understanding the differences between True North, Magnetic North and Grid North. Simply point me in the right direction, tell me what to expect from the terrain and send me on my way. We can use Orienteering as a valuable metaphorical tool to understand navigating the Christian life. True north is the actual, geographic location of the North Pole of the Earth, that is, the axis around which the Earth rotates. Magnetic North is where the Earth's magnetic field "exits" the surface of the planet. It is what attracts the needle of a magnetic compass to point "north". Because magnetic north and the North Pole are not located in the same place (the magnetic north pole is currently located north of Canada and west of Greenland) in order to use a magnetic compass to navigate, you have to apply a correction factor in degrees to make up in the difference in location from geographic north. This difference will of course change depending on where you are on the Earth's surface. To convert Magnetic North to True North we have to know the local magnetic variation and add or subtract accordingly. Grid North is simply the grid line on a standard map. Do True North, Magnetic North, and Grid North exist from a Christian perspective? If these differentiations do exist, what are they? Maybe I need to ask the question in a different way. Does God see these three differentiations or do we just see them? First off, through God’s eyes, only True North exists, that is God alone. Our eyes see the three differentiations. Magnetic North is our attempt, alone without God, to live our lives. Unfortunately, without God our lives become fruitless without meaning. To convert our Magnetic North to True North we must simply accept and follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Remember in John 14:6 when Thomas asks the way to where Jesus was going. “Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the conversion variation that we alone must make. Now our Grid North is simply the map that we follow in our lives. That map can be any road to any type of accomplishment in our lives; examples would be Money, Power, and Achievement. Unfortunately, without God as our true north these maps are incomplete. The complete map is Holy Scripture, God’s Word and his truth in this world, the Holy Spirit. God understands our lives on earth as he has walked in our shoes through the life of Jesus Christ. God knows that we are in this world but not of this world. God has provided a map to find our Grid North. God has provided each of us the opportunity to let our Grid North and Magnetic North be our True North. We just have to use our compass.

MUSIC MINISTRIES Can you believe summer is gone and the program year has already started? If you are still looking for a ministry to share your time and talent, I urge you to consider joining the choir. Whether you are able to join us weekly on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:30, or occasionally, we would love to have you! We are a group of fun-loving individuals who enjoy making music, being together, and playing a role in Sunday Eucharists. Give us a try! Not a singer? Perhaps you would be interested in sharing your instrumental abilities. Please contact me if you would like to share your gifts in worship. I am confident we can utilize your talents!

A Note from the Senior Warden I had the privilege of attending the Habitat for Humanity wall-raising on Saturday September 10. As the 25 or so volunteers worked together to raise the 500 pound walls, I was reminded of the proverb, “Many hands make light the work.” As a self-appointed photographer, I stayed out of the way, but thank you to all the St. Peter’s folks and other volunteers that came to help. Thanks also to Leslie Williams for preparing a delicious lunch for the volunteers, and to Bill Muldoon for taking photos on site as well. Work takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The good people from First United Methodist Church are building a house right next door. Do you think we can finish our house before they finish theirs? Our first Senior Game Day took place on September 14, and seemed to be a success. I understand that those in attendance decided to meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 3:00 PM in the multi -purpose room. Bring your cards, bring your dominoes, bring your games and bring your friends. Plan to stay for 5:15 Eucharist and then dinner at 5:45. You can have a fun-filled afternoon, Communion, dinner and still be home before dark. The Rector Search Committee has been selected and will be commissioned on Sunday October 2, at all three services. You can visit www.stpeterskerrville.com and click on “About us,” and then click on “Rector search,” to see the names of the committee members. After commissioning, Chairman Mickey Horany and the other committee members will have some training, some Bible study and some social time before they receive names from the Diocese for consideration. If you submitted names to Mickey or me as possible candidates for Rector, I have forwarded those names to the Rev. Canon Joann Saylors, Canon for Deployment and Congregational Development. After vetting, she will present those names to the search committee. Our Stewardship campaign is coming soon. I am excited to announce that we will be doing something a bit different this year. Come on October 9, to find out more. Until next month, I’ll leave you with this: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
