THE SPIRIT ALONG THE WAY His Presence February 05, 2017

Introduction: It’s easy to get lost – even with a GPS. Place my address into your phone and it will take you to a location a mile west of our home. People have injured themselves, and even killed themselves, because they have trusted in their GPS. The same is true of our lives. What we trust in will either lead us in the right way, or the wrong way. The question all of us are trying to determine is spoken by Phillip, “How can we know the way?” Scripture Reading: John 14:4-11 I. Who is the Way? 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (John 14:4–5). 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:6–7). This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because… he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God (John 5:18). Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us” (John 14:8). 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves (John 14:9–11). Principle: The Way is Jesus who is God in flesh and form – the same in nature and character. II. Who is the Helper along the Way? A. The Paraclete is not the only Helper.

16

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16–17). 17

Principle: Jesus and the Spirit share the same work along the way.

B. Who is truth along the way? 16

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16–17). And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). … grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17b). 17

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32). Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life… (John 14:6a). Principle: Jesus and the Spirit share the same defining characteristic. Jesus identifies the Spirit with himself. “… You know him…” (John 14:17b)

C. The Helper is both present and future. 16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16–17).

Principle: The Spirit dwells, lives with us – present. The Spirit will live with you – future.

As the Father and the Son are ONE, Jesus and the Spirit (which came from God), are ONE. III. The Gift is No Stranger and We Know the Way 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.” 21 “…he who loves me will be

loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 23 “…and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:18–21, 23). Principle: We are not pursuing something that is unknown or unexpected; neither are his ways unpredictable or his agenda unknown. The Spirit is not just like Jesus… the Spirit is Jesus!
