Rolling Hills Community Church “God’s Dwelling Place: The story Before the Story.” October 29, 2017 “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.” Exodus 25:8 Building the Tabernacle Together Exodus 31 Assembling the Tabernacle Involved Everyone “Also I have given skill to all the craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you: the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent…” Exodus 31:6b-7 - Moses was not called to build the Tabernacle by himself. o Bazalel and Oholiab were the project managers, but it took everyone. o All the craftsman, people giving (Exodus 35 - they brought way more than enough!), women making the curtains, and everyone joined together. o The entire community - God invites us to join Him in what He is doing. - We reach our full potential when we join God in what He is doing. The Tabernacle shows God’s emphasis on worship and rest “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.” Exodus 31:12-13 - God wants us to be healthy. - The importance of worship. A time and place to focus on God. - The importance of Sabbath. Sabbath means rest. The Tabernacle is the visual expression of the heart of God “When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.” Exodus 31:18 - God wants us to know His heart and His desires for us. - God gives the people Ten Commandments (“the two tablets of the Testimony”) - The Ten Commandments were kept in the Ark of the Covenant - Commandments #1-4 = Relationship with God - Commandment #5-10 = Relationship with others God wants you to know Him and to rest in His love for you. Will you rest in Him today? “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Saint Augustine

Taking It Home God called the people back in the Old Testament to build the Tabernacle so they could know His heart. God longs to dwell with His people. The Tabernacle reveals the heart of God and pointed them to the coming Messiah. Knowing God comes through a relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. God longs for us to be healthy. This comes from worship, rest and living out His Word. We are restless in life until we rest in God through Christ. Will you find your identity in Christ and rest in His love for you? God is with you, and He is for you. The Tabernacle shows us the God who longs to dwell with us.
