News for the Residents of the Villages at Western Oaks AND Legend Oaks I

Attention: Business Owners, Marketing & Sales Professionals DYNASTY–DYNASTY–DYNASTY!

For the 2nd year in a row, The Live Oak Network, a professional business referral organization, was rated #1 in membership and referrals generated in Central Texas! That’s right… and we are the biggest and the best again! But you know what’s even better? We are also the most fun-loving, enthusiastic and supportive group of professionals too! Quick Quiz: 1. Do you know a reliable and trustworthy professional (residential, commercial, health and beauty, financial services, trades, or event planning) who places their customer’s needs first? 2. Would you refer them to your friends and or family members without hesitation because they are the best you’ve ever seen? If you answered “Yes”, tell them The Live Oak Network is looking for more full-time, trustworthy, experienced professionals to join our growing network today! The Live Oak Network is a non-competitive professional referral organization that admits one high quality individual or company per professional category to share ideas, contacts and most importantly referrals. Are you curious? Do you want to learn how to build your business by referral? Visit us this week! We meet each Wednesday morning, and there is no obligation to join.

The Live Oak Network Every Wednesday - 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM Nuevo Leon Restaurant 5900 Slaughter Ln, Suite D550, 78749

The Village Gazette Flowerbed Preparation

The secret to beautiful flowers, shrubs, trees and lots of delicious vegetables, with a minimum of insect and disease problems, is healthy soil. Healthy soil is the result of proper bed preparation.   To prepare garden beds the natural way, scrape away any existing weeds and grass and toss that material into the compost pile. Don’t till before doing this or you’ll drive the reproductive part of the grass down in the ground and create a huge weed problem. Next, spread a blanket of thick compost across the bed area - 4” deep for ground cover, 6” deep for shrubs and vines and as much as 8” deep for perennials, roses and vegetables. Next, add an organic fertilizer at 2 lbs. per 100 square feet, lava sand at 80lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. and 1” of expanded shale, 10lbs each of dry molasses and horticultural corn meal. Then, a small amount of dry molasses and till this mixture together and into the existing soil to a depth of about 8 to 10 inches and plant away. Put a mulch layer around transplants and seedlings when they are large enough. Cover all the bare soil. Your production will impress you. The soil is, as a matter of fact, full of live organisms. It is essential to conceive of it as something pulsating with life, not as a dead or inert mass.

The Village Gazette - March 2008

Spring Festival at Mills Elementary April 26th, 3:00 to 7:00pm.

A member of the Mills PTA Executive board made a presentation to the New Villages of Western Oaks HOA Board last month and explained to them our pedestrian safety initiative, as well as our proactive solution of posting “Use Our Crosswalks!” signs to serve as a visual reminder to our parents to follow common sense pedestrian rules when bringing their children to school every day. After informing the HOA of our 10 signs that will span the median from Davis to Lantana, as well as at the corners of La Carman Drive & Lantana and Taylorcrest Drive & Lantana, the HOA voted to approve our sign campaign and requested we keep them informed on whether it solves our problem.  It is very important that we, as parents and community members, help teach all children, as well as follow the rules they already know all too well. Another area of safety concern for the Mills neighborhood is the recent number of daytime burglaries on La Carman Drive, Salcon Cliff Drive, Tanak Lane and Hitcher Bend in the past 2 months. Austin Police Department visited with the New Villages HOA in November and cited two car burglaries in the Fall, but our neighborhood had been quiet for the most part. Things have changed drastically, especially with the graffiti that popped up at the school mid-late January. We all must be proactive and never hesitate to call 9-1-1 when we see something suspicious. APD and Travis County Sheriff’s Office can’t respond to what they don’t know about.

THe Village gazette How To Start Playing Tennis - Practice and Playing Tips Submitted By Fernando M. Velasco

Purchasing a Tennis Racket – Make sure that someone with experience has helped you with the selection of a tennis racket. They come with different sizes of grips, shapes and thickness. Your swing speed and your ability will determine what will be best for you. Tennis Shoes – Running and walking shoes are not ideal to play tennis. They have different support and soles than tennis shoes. Many clubs will only allow proper tennis shoes to be worn on their tennis courts, not only for safety for the player, but also because other shoes mark and damage the tennis courts. We suggest always purchasing a shoe a half-size bigger than normal shoes, to allow you to wear good tennis socks. Many players, including myself, always wear two pair of socks to help with cushion and avoid blisters and calluses. Clothing - One of the beauties of the game, is that you do not need to spend a great deal of money on clothing. We suggest a comfortable top and pair of shorts/skirts with pockets to be worn when playing. Tank tops for men are not allowed on Club’s tennis courts. Make

sure you always protect yourself from the sun with a hat, visor or cap. We strongly recommend wearing at least a 20-50 spf ultra sweat-proof sunscreen lotion to protect you from the sun. Playing time – When arriving on the tennis court, spend at least 20 minutes stretching. Most injuries occur in the first half hour of playing due to muscles and tendons being tight and not stretched. Start with the legs, back shoulders, neck, and finish with the arms for serving motion. Spend at least 5 minutes playing “mini-tennis” to feel the court, the wind, and the speed of the ball. Once you feel warmed up, then pull back to the baseline and start hitting groundstrokes, just keeping the ball in play. Your warm-up should also include hitting volleys, overheads and serves. Now you are ready to start playing the game, either with your friends, in a tournament or in league play. In the next issue, I will discuss how to get “mentally prepared” prior to competing and playing socially with spouses, friends and children.

THe Village gazette Wage War on Weeds, Not Water! It’s that time of the year to be thinking green – green lawns with green, earth-wise products! The City of Austin and the Texas AgriLife Extension are continuing their new campaign that asks Austinites to avoid using weed and feed products. Over 45,000 pounds of atrazine, a weed killing chemical, are sold each year in Austin in popular fertilizer-plus-herbicide products. Much of the chemical that is not used by the lawn is traveling to our creeks and groundwater. The result is that we are seeing the chemical much more often and at more monitoring sites than we have in the past. While the levels of the chemical detected are fortunately still low, the City of Austin and the AgriLife Extension are launching a new educational program to keep Austin’s water clean. Through Grow Green, their earth-wise landscaping program, they are asking homeowners city-wide to take action now and avoid using weed and feed products. Weed and feeds combine both fertilizer and weed killer and are not environmentally-sound for several reasons. First, the best time to fertilize is usually NOT the best time to use an herbicide. Equally important is the fact that spreading a weed killer over the entire lawn is considered excessive in most cases. Any chemical that is not absorbed by the targeted weed stays unused on the turf where it can wash off to Austin’s creeks or filter into our groundwater supply.

The chemical can also find its way indoors on shoes, hands, and pet paws. Find alternative weed-prevention and reduction methods, and learn more about atrazine at www.growgreen.org. You can help protect our water one yard at a time!

THe Village gazette Protecting our Children in an Online World By Trey Blundell

During my childhood, we entertained ourselves with our imaginations, board games and by playing outside. Computers were, compared to now, large, expensive machines found only in a business setting. All of that has changed during the past thirty years with the invention of personal computers and the subsequent commoditization of them and the Internet over the past fifteen years. Today’s generation of children is born into a world full of computers, and exposure to them typically begins at home at a very early age. Many children are already highly skilled in their use and the use of the Internet by the time they begin elementary school. Yet without safeguards in place, our children are at risk. While we wouldn’t put our children on a bicycle without a helmet, many children today use the Internet without protection from inappropriate content or from people who would do them harm. One problem is that many parents don’t understand or know about the dangers that lurk, nor do they know how to protect their children when online. According to the most recent published estimates, approximately 12% of all websites are pornography or related to pornography and 79% of unwanted youth exposure to pornography occurs in the home Equally disturbing are two other trends: online bullying and the rise

of the online child predator. It is estimated that 9% of children are bullied or harassed online – whether on a social networking website, such as MySpace, or via e-mail. It is also estimated that 13 % of children were sexually solicited in 2005, with 4% of these being referred to as “aggressive solicitations”, in which solicitors made or attempted to make offline contact with youth . Parenting in today’s online world could present challenges for which you may not feel ready, but applying the same parenting skills that you are already using, such as limits and consequences, combined with the following list will get you started: • Secure your computer: at a minimum, install and run anti-virus, anti-spyware and content filtering software. Consider monitoring software that can record where your child is spending time – websites visited; chat rooms visited, (Continued on page 13) for is ad ion th ervice t n e M off s $100 0 or more 0 0 of $1

Clean Sweep - Saturday, April 5, 2008

Clean Sweep is an annual citywide cleanup of public spaces throughout Austin. It is followed by a Volunteer Party and Environmental Fair at Waterloo Park with free lunch, live music, a rock climbing wall, kid’s environmental activities, exhibits, interactive Green Art. Participants will also receive a free t-shirt and a chance to win door prizes. Contact Brian Block at [email protected] or 512-3910621 to sign up for a company sponsorship. You can join a “cleanup spot” at Lady Bird Lake or creeks throughout Austin or hold a cleanup of your own. See www.keepaustinbeautiful.org for a list of cleanup spots or to register another location to be cleaned up. Supplies will be provided and Keep Austin Beautiful can also help recruit additional volunteers for your cleanup spot. Clean Sweep 2008 will be on Saturday, April 5th. The cleanup will be from 9 to 11 A.M., and the party will be from 11:30 to 1:30 P.M.
