The Visitor

Rev. Anna Guillozet Senior Pastor

Rev. Jennifer Casey Associate Pastor

I once heard a pastor tell a colleague that she was feeling burned out and near the point of exhaustion. When the colleague asked her when her last vacation was, she replied with a declaratory, “Well, I can’t take vacation! I have too much to get done here!”

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

I drew in a breath waiting for how my colleague would reply. Thankfully, the response was, “If you cannot leave your ministry setting for a week to take a vacation, then you have set yourself on an awfully precarious pedestal!” Each of us loves to be needed. It is nice to know that someone values us (and our work) enough to feel frantic in our absence. Ultimately, however, working ourselves into a position where no one else can do the work we’re doing or fulfill the role we’re fulfilling, we stand alone on that precarious pedestal.

Beloved, I know that right now it feels like there is an awful lot of change happening in staffing and leadership at Church of the Master, and there is! But you know what? Our leaders are stepping up in the midst of the transitions to make sure that people are cared for and that tasks are being accomplished.

A related note from your Staff/Parish Relations Committee: We have had our work cut out for us on SPRC in the last few months! We remain committed to stewarding resources and staff energy around our mission to Love God, Grow in Christ, Live to Serve. Here are a few updates regarding our staffing transitions: Pastoral Leadership: Bishop Palmer has prayerfully and thoughtfully appointed Rev. Jay Anderson to serve as our next Senior Pastor. At this time, a successor for our Associate Pastor will not be appointed. Pastor Jay will lead our Finance Committee and SPRC in conversation and review of the budget to ensure that God’s ministry through Church of the Master will continue forward, evaluating the number of pastoral appointments made by the Bishop to this congregation. Children’s Ministry: Kay Thomas, our Director of Children’s Ministry, has extended her service through May 28th. At this time, SPRC is still seeking the right candidate to fulfill the newly expanded full-time position. Until that next candidate is hired, SPRC is working to implement interim measures to ensure that our children’s summer programming moves forward. Volunteers are working hard to make sure that VBS, Club SAM, Sunday School, and worship related responsibilities are cared for. Next Generation Ministry: As previously shared, the position of Director of Next Generations Ministry will be reduced to a ½ time position. The date of this transition is to be determined in light of the change of pastoral leadership. Summer programming (like REACH and Survivor Camp), to the best of our abilities, will not be impacted by this reduction. Office Administrator: We are proud to share with you that in alignment with our staffing appraisal, we have hired a “Coordinator of Congregational Care.” Please see page 2 for an introduction and explanation of the expanded support position.

STAFF LETTER Dear Church of the Master Community, When I began seminary years ago, I was a dual degree for MDiv and MACM, studying to either be a pastor or a licensed professional counselor. People would ask, “Where do you think God is calling you for a career?” Most of my life, I always said, “I have absolutely no idea.” I spent years frustrated with God that my calling wasn’t made clear. Mostly because I am extremely impatient, and I need to be reminded that we worship a God of patience. I finally started to tell people that I didn’t know where I was being called because what I really wanted to do didn’t exist (or so I thought). “If I could somehow combine my love of faith, ministry, spirituality, and counseling,” I’d say, “That would be my dream job.” Which is why I am thrilled, excited (and humbled because I’m also saying to God, “I know, I know, in Your time…”) to announce my new role at Church of the Master as Coordinator of Congregational Care beginning June 10, 2019. This role will combine my passion and skills in pastoral care and counseling, as well as my love and history of church life. The conference sees a need in our congregation for a role like this and I am happy to be stepping in. As church systems have evolved and changed over the years, so has the role of “pastor.” Because of the helping profession that pastor-life is, pastors reach burnout only right behind nurses. Not too long ago, roles like mine were created to walk alongside pastors and relieve some of their burden when it comes to caring for the physical and spiritual needs of entire congregations. Pastor’s schedules may not allow them to coordinate hospital visits, lead support groups, or host one-on-one sessions for grieving parishioners. That does not mean that these parts of ministry are valued any less by pastors than they have been in the past. What it does mean, is that others are able to be the hands and feet of Jesus as we step into these Congregational Care roles. Your pastor will always be available. It’s now my job to be available, too. You’ll still find me behind the front desk, answering phones and creating bulletins. My current responsibilities will remain while I add more congregational care tasks to my role. It is my plan, my goal, and my hope to walk alongside each of you as we stumble through this messy yet incredibly beautiful thing we call faith. As we each face times of grief, celebration, anger, and joy, my goal is to be right here. In this sacred and holy space, in this sacred and holy community, sharing life with your sacred and holy souls. Thank you for welcoming me to this place. I’m honored to do life with you. In Christ’s Patient Love,

Kristina Walsh

CONGREGATIONAL UPDATES

Let’s Move! Sunday, May 5th

The Health Cabinet is sponsoring an event Sunday, May 5th, after the 11:00AM service. One of our cabinet's goals is to promote wellness in our congregation. This will be a presentation of exercises to improve breathing, flexibility and balance. The event, titled "Let's Move!" will be lead by Kathy Bowman, a certified A.C.E. personal trainer. She will demonstrate some techniques, and lead the group in active participation of some easy exercises that can be done in a standing or seated position. This type of movement is slow and easy, and emphasizes breathing, stretching and balance. Great for all ages, can be easily incorporated in daily routines, requires no extra equipment or fees! A salad bar lunch will be served.

Altar Flowers

Because of flower arrangement price increases over the years, we have raised the price of altar flower arrangements to $33 (an increase of $3). This price change will become effective in May for those who have not already paid for arrangements. Thank you for continuing to make our worship space afresh with your gifts of arrangements!

Celebrate Good Times, Come On! Pastor Jennifer is getting ordained!

Join us in celebrating Pastor Jennifer’s Ordination on Wednesday, June 5th at 4:30 p.m. This service will be held at Lakeside, Ohio, in Hoover Auditorium. If you are planning on attending, please email Pastor Anna ([email protected]) for information and updates by May 12th. If enough folks would like to attend, Church of the Master will look into transportation to the Ordination service. It is a privilege to have a current Pastor serving your congregation ordained, so if you have never attended an ordination service, this is a perfect opportunity to worship and celebrate. A note from Pastor Jennifer – if you’re making the trek for the ordination service, plan on sticking around for a party immediately following! Walk across the street to 351 Central Avenue (directly across the street from Hoover Auditorium) for food and fun!

CONGREGATIONAL UPDATES

A new directory is coming soon!

It’s been several years since we last updated our church directory. Starting in May, volunteers will be available on Sundays to help you register for a photo shoot. You, your family and your pets (if you choose) can be photographed for the new church directory. Lifetouch is partnering with Church of the Master to provide photography services. We hope that all will choose to get an updated photo; you need not purchase a photo package to participate and discounts/ incentives are available for those who do make a purchase. Photography dates are June 18, June 19, and July 1.

THANK YOU!!!

Westerville Habitat Partnership sends a heartfelt thank you to all you participated in their City Barbeque Fundraiser on April 8. As of this writing, we have not learned the total earned, but it will be in the bulletin when it’s available.

Tapestry of a Town

SAVE THE DATE – Sunday, July 28 – for TAPESTRY OF A TOWN! Plan now to take part in this popular Westerville Habitat Partnership event where you can visit and learn about several historic buildings and homes of Westerville. It will be from 1 to 5 pm. The $15 tickets will be sold Sunday mornings, July 21 & 28, and there will again be goodie bags available on a first come, first served basis. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity. HELP NEEDED: Hosts are needed for 2 hour shifts at the various Tapestry sites. We are still looking for musicians/groups and also visual artists to perform or display at the sites. Please contact Frankie Exley or Josh Flory if you’re interested in helping. Hosts and musicians will receive free tickets for their personal use before or after their scheduled shift.

SAVE THE DATE: WHP Walls Build

Saturday, Aug. 17, 7:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., at Otterbein's The Point. All the walls for a Habitat home will be built. You don't have to have carpentry skills or tools to help with building walls and you will gain new skills and a great feeling of having helped a family in need of a low-cost, safe home. Tools and instruction are provided. Children are welcome to take part with a parent. Watch the bulletin and next month's Visitor for sign-up information. Friday evening, August 16 - there will be a prep session to cut the wood for Saturday's construction. Those with experience with power saws, etc. are encouraged to volunteer for this.
