The Inseparable Bond of Love Romans 8:35-39 35

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I. The Bond—The Love of Christ (Verse 35) Agape Love— The love of God demonstrated toward men; affection, good-will, benevolence, devotion God’s disposition toward you as revealed in Christ Christ’s love indicates your relationship and status with Him. You are bound (1 John 3:1; John 15:13; Romans 1:1; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15; Rev 1:5; Rom 5:8; Eph2:4; 1Cor 2:9) God loves you as much and with the same love as He loves His Son Jesus – a perfect love that is eternal and cannot change nor be diminished!

II. The Bond Breakers (Verse 35 “Who shall separate us…”) Separate: at a distance from; divide, put asunder; to depart; remove; to leave go away 35 Trouble – Hardship – Persecution – Famine – Nakedness – Danger - Sword 38 Death – Life – Angels – Demons – Present – Future - any powers 39 Height – Depth - anything else in all creation

III. The Certain Result (Verses 37-38) 37

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. NO: nevertheless, rather, instead More than conquerors: Not merely endurance but a surpassing and overwhelming victory over the forces that would separate! 38 For I am convinced...

Convinced: persuaded, trust firmly in, rely on, believe; be certain of something; more than mere knowledge Paul was convinced beyond all doubt that NO force or influence can keep God’s love from us!

IV. The Central Reason Verse 37: “...through Him who loved us.” Through: by way of; on the basis of, on account of; because of Alone, we succumb to the forces that separate, but through Him because of what He did, we can stand in peace and praise as conquerors in the security and certainty of His overcoming love! Verse 38: “...the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Lord: strong, having power or authority; master; owner, to whom a person or thing belongs; the sovereign, prince, chief. Jesus, the Messiah!

Jesus Christ is Lord alone over all things! All forces that would attempt to break the bond of love: spiritual powers – life – death – present - future! It was in Him that God chose us and saved us in love. It is through Him and with Him that we shall enter into God’s glory in eternity. Conclusion: The circumstances of life may overwhelm us and tempt us to believe we are separated from God and His love for us. Our security is not based on circumstance but upon the authority and promise of His Word that God loves you with an everlasting love that will not change nor let you go…regardless! God never stopped loving His son as He suffered through the circumstances of the Cross, and He will likewise never stop loving you in your suffering or failure! Find your true peace and security in His everlasting love through faith in His Son Jesus Christ… a bond of love that will never be broken!
