AUGUST 18–22, 2014

There are those who desperately need what you have to give mounthermon.org/legacy

Mount Hermon presents the 2014 Creating a Legacy Conference! This August people will gather among the redwoods at Mount Hermon to learn and to grow. That fact alone is not unique. People have been coming to Mount Hermon for generations to learn and grow. But for the last couple of years there’s been something new, the Creating a Legacy Conference! Each of us has been given so much. But how do we pass along those things that have meant so much to us to our children and grandchildren? To the people who mean the most to us? Legacy is about so much more than just finances. What about the spiritual heritage, the family traditions, the qualities that make your family so unique and different? How do you ensure future generations will treasure those things the way you do? That’s what this conference is all about. We’ve assembled a world-class faculty; people like Bill Butterworth, Anastasia Hansel, Sibyl Towner, Dr. Ryan Bentley, and many more. These folks are committed to showing you how to leave a powerful legacy to the generations to come.

JIM KOCH The complex impact of family dynamics on our spiritual, emotional and relational health was first impressed upon Jim growing up as the youngest child under parents dedicated to ministry, missions, and Christian education. Believing that he was headed toward parish ministry, he first spent the 1970’s working with hundreds of youth inside and outside the church in Southern California. His life-long study of the Genesis 12-50 as a four-generation family history has given him a biblical framework for identifying the principles that uphold or degrade respectful and loving relationships...in family and beyond. Jim has had the opportunity to teach this narrative in many settings here and abroad. Most especially, as part of the mobile faculty of Institution of Christian Resources, he was able to offer this framework to the emerging churches in Central and Eastern Europe from 1978-2008.

Seminars Major Track The Critical Journey… LIFE!

Dancing With Porcupines

Last year Sibyl came to share her “One Life Maps” in two separate seminars. This year we’re giving her a Major Track! Each of our lives arc along the same progression through very distinct stages of faith. The better we understand these stages and our own place along the arc, the better we’ll know what our next step in the progression should be and we’ll be able to better appreciate where others are in their own journey of faith.

Roger & Rachel are back to teach their “Dancing with Porcupines!” course! If you’ve missed this before, you’ll want to be sure and attend their major track this year. They’ll be talking about the “relational legacies” we all build and how important they are. They’ll be offering insights into your own behavioral style as well as other styles and how they interact.

SIBYL TOWNER

Telling Your Story

BILL BUTTERWORTH A part of leaving a legacy is telling people your story. It may be the most important part. We learn not only how to tell a story, but how to tell your story. You may want to tell your story in writing, or on video, or on audio, or in a scrapbook, or whatever. Every good story has a beginning, a middle and an end. So come join us and we’ll discover together how to turn memories into legacy.

ROGER & RACHEL WILLIAMS

Provide & Protect

J.R. LOOFBOURROW, JOHN WATTS & ROB FAISANT This powerful team will once again come and teach their popular “Provide and Protect” course. In their sessions you’ll gain valuable insight on conserving and distributing resources to meet family financial needs both now and in the future.

Health & Wellness for Life DR. RYAN BENTLEY

Coming back to the LEGACY conference by popular demand, Dr. Bentley will be teaching us how to leave a significant LEGACY of “Health and Wellness for Life” to those we love most by setting a healthy life example according to God’s plan. You’ll learn strategies on how to combat the major stressors of life and you’ll even have the opportunity to complete your own health and wellness audit as a part of the class.

Seminars Elective Seminars Another Country

Life Investing; Anyone Can Mentor

May Starton, in her book “As We Are Now” said, “The trouble is, old age is not interesting until one gets there. It’s a foreign country with an unknown language to the young and even to the middle aged.” In this seminar we will be navigating the emotional landscape of caregiving. Some of us find ourselves being led where we did not wish to go. ALL of us will discover that in the caring of one for another, BOTH are forever changed.

In a day and age where there seem to be so many paths and so many choices it’s easy for folks in their 20's and 30's to become distracted and confused. This is the perfect scenario for a mentor—an older and wiser guide to help point the way. You can be that older and wiser guide! Your valuable life experience is all the qualification you need to make a difference in someone’s life. Participants in this popular seminar will get practical tips on getting started, what to talk about and what important questions need to be asked in one-on-one or group mentoring situations.

ANASTASIA HANSEL, FOUNDER GLOBAL WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP NETWORK

Life After Fifty

ANASTASIA HANSEL, FOUNDER GLOBAL WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP NETWORK “Life isn’t simply the days that have passed but the moments we remember.” Perhaps one of life’s invitations is to explore previously Unknown areas of the days we remember . . . to ask questions and then to struggle with answers that are usually, by our limited perceptions, incomplete. We are shaped by the moments in which we live.

DAVE TALBOTT, MOUNT HERMON

Creating Meaningful Family Traditions

BILL BUTTERWORTH, BUTTERWORTH COMMUNICATIONS INSTITUTE Family traditions are the glue that holds our families together. Holidays, birthdays, vacations and other family events are fertile soil to nurture the traditions that will pull your tribe closer together. In this seminar you’ll hear some great ideas and learn how to establish traditions your family will hold dear long into the future.

Is ‘THIS’ Where I Was Going?

Beginner Genealogy: Back to the Basics

ANASTASIA HANSEL, FOUNDER GLOBAL WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP NETWORK

RACHEL WILLIAMS, MOUNT HERMON

Corrie Ten Boom said, “The events of our lives when we let God use them become the mysterious and perfect preparation for the work He has called us to do.” Sometimes there is a specific moment in time that creeps up so unannounced it is hardly noticed for its significance but ever afterward it marks the point when everything changed. In this seminar Anastasia shares how her story has been HIM-pacted by His story.

You’ve told yourself for years you’d start your family history but have never done it. Come learn the basics of how to get started in discovering your roots. It’s easier than ever with the help of the Internet. We’ll learn how together! Helpful handouts will be a part of the seminar.

Seminars Elective Seminars Sticky Faith

TIM GALLEHER, FULLER SEMINARY YOUTH INSTITUTE Why is it that over 40-50% of graduating high school seniors will likely pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith? For those kids who remain connected to Jesus, what is it that makes the difference? And what can we do in every grade of middle school and high school to help kids develop faith that lasts? This seminar takes a practical look at deep research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute on students. It unearths some of the toxic myths students believe about the gospel, the church, and their family that cause them to shelve their faith. You’ll leave with practical ideas you can use immediately to help your children or grandchildren stick with their faith for the long haul.

Revitalizing Your Prayer Life JAYNE PRICE, MOUNT HERMON

Do you feel like your prayer life is 'stuck in a rut' or that your prayers are not being heard or answered or maybe you long for a deeper sense of communication with the living God than you are currently experiencing. Revitalizing Your Prayer Life is an opportunity to explore ways to refresh and renew that communication. We will be re-exploring some ancient practices along with some newer avenues to experience our most important relationship with our creator.

20

Elective Seminars

Keeping Your Brain Healthy Part 1

JULIA JENNINGS, MONTEREY BAY MEMORY CENTER As we get older, there are some changes one can expect in terms of memory and other cognitive abilities. Test your knowledge about brain health. Learn to recognize the difference between healthy aging and dementia. Learn the risk factors for Alzheimer's Disease, and what you can do to reduce your risk.

Keeping Your Brain Healthy Part 2

JULIA JENNINGS, MONTEREY BAY MEMORY CENTER Dr. Jennings will present research about specific lifestyle strategies to reduce your risk for Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia. You'll also learn about cognitive exercise, as a way to train your brain. Ask your questions about memory and aging.

Enhancing Your Relationship with Grown Children and Grandchildren KEN & MARI HARROWER, MOUNT HERMON

Ken and Mari will explore the joys and challenges of deepening the relationship with our grown children and their spouses. Enjoying healthy family interactions is integral to meaningful connections with our grandchildren. We all want satisfying relationships within our families, but there can be significant obstacles and we may not know how best to resolve them. We know that these relationships can become strained and disconnected if not handled intentionally and carefully. As a pastor and family therapist, Ken and Mari will share their knowledge and experience to help participants navigate the complexities of these important relationships.

Elective Seminars

21

Seminars Elective Seminars Navigating Grief and Loss

Reaching Out to Postmodern America

DAVE BURNS, MOUNT HERMON

LISA OLSON, MOUNT HERMON

At some point in our lives we will all know the profound and defining experience of mourning a loss. It may be the loss of a loved one, relationships, physical ability…and the list goes on. Meanwhile we all know people who are already walking that path. This seminar will explore how you can understand grief and respond to loss, yours or others.

Our Legacy is seen in the impact we have on the generations that follow us. Whether we seek to impact our adult children and grandchildren or the younger people we influence in our churches, workplaces and neighborhoods, we must be intentional about understanding the culture in which they live. Come learn about the culture known as Postmodernism and why it affects you and those you love whether you like it or not. Learn what postmoderns value, how they think, their vocabulary, and most importantly, how you can know them, love them and serve them, drawing them closer to Jesus as a result of their authentic relationship with you.

Never a Better Time in your Life to Make Disciples! WES & JUDY WICK, YES!

This seminar will focus on steps you can take to continue building legacy by serving outside your comfort zones. We’ll discuss ways of avoiding the snares of idleness in the empty
nest and retirement years, investing in the work of the Kingdom. Finally, we’ll discuss the contagious joy of passing on legacy now through discipling and mentoring.

The Gospel of Genesis: Breaking the Yoke of Family Dysfunction, Redeeming a Broken Legacy DR. JAMES KOCH

We will discuss the narrative of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Judah... as a four-generation family history. We will see how the sins of the fathers (and mothers) are passed on to unsuspecting generations, undermining loving relationships and perpetuating a legacy of dysfunction
and pathology...even among God’s chosen people of faith! Our present-day struggles will become clearer in the context of their well-known story. The evidence of God’s presence, patience and grace will encourage us to “break the yokes” of family sin that sometimes have dominated our families for many generations. A healthier legacy is what God desires for us and our children! 22
