Diabetes impacts younger people more often: Are you at risk? Brandpoint
Every 17 seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes. What’s even more surprising is diabetes is growing fastest among younger people, outpacing the rate of heart disease, substance abuse and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A new study by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) shows that the impact of diabetes continues to grow and is increasing most rapidly among those age 18 through 34. The 4.7 percent growth in diabetes impact for younger adults from 2013 through 2015 corresponds to this age group’s spike in obesity rates, a key contributor to the onset of diabetes. Diabetes ranks third in terms of its health impact nationally on quality of life
and cost for the commercially insured population among the more than 200 conditions measured by the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Health Index. The “health impact” of a specific condition reflects the prevalence and severity for that condition as well as the years of life lost due to disability and risk of premature death. The report, “Diabetes and the Commercially Insured U.S. Population,” represents an analysis of the BCBS Health Index data on diabetes, which leverages the claims of more than 40 million BCBS members. Younger people may not be as focused on their health and many may not be aware they are at risk for diabetes at their age. The first step is to understand the risk and the next step is to take action. Type 2 diabetes is preventable with
thoughtful, proactive measures. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are many ways to lower your risk of developing diabetes, including: Weight: Staying at a healthy weight can help you prevent and manage problems like prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol. Keep tabs on your weight by weighing yourself at least once per week. Stay active and strive to watch less than 10 hours of TV per week. Physical activity: Physical activity can do a lot for your overall health. Set your alarm to get up and stretch or walk around the house or office at least every 30 minutes throughout the day. A walking buddy or workout friend can support you while you both work toward your goals.

Why Haven’t Senior Homeowners Been Told These Facts?

It’s a well-known fact that for many senior citizens in the U.S. their home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 50% of their total net worth. Yet, according to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 6.1 trillion dollars of unused home equity.1 With people now living longer than ever before and home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth” may prove to be short sighted. However, today, there are still millions of eligible homeowners who could benefit from this FHA-insured loan but may simply not be aware of this “retirement secret.” Some homeowners think HECM loans sound “too good to be true.” After all, you get the cash you need out of your home but you have no more monthly mortgage payments.
NO MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS?2 EXTRA CASH? It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan;2 however the homeowners are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees. Your eyes: you stare with them, wink with them and roll them. You use your eyes to communicate your thoughts and feelings every single day. Whether you’re aware of it or not, your eyes can speak volumes about who you are and what you feel. But could your eyes be sending the wrong message? New findings from Allergan’s “A Look at Eye
Language” online survey of 1,019 adult Americans reveal that approximately half of respondents (53 percent) say the first facial feature they notice about another person is their eyes. Patti Wood, a body language expert with over 25 years of experience in the field of human behavior, says our eyes can convey all sorts of messages - both intentionally and unintentionally. “Eye language is the

messages we send to others with our eyes,” Wood says. “These eye behaviors include rubbing the eyes, extended eye contact, averted gaze or eye shifts. Our eye language can say a lot about us, revealing our emotions, confidence level and, at times, even if we’re telling the truth.” Curious what your eyes are telling other people? Wood provides four eye language examples. * Eye contact: Too much of a good thing. You’re taught early on to look at someone when they’re talking to you; it’s a sign of respect and shows you’re listening. In fact, the survey, conducted in conjunction with Kelton Global, revealed that for those who see the value in maintaining eye contact, holding a direct gaze makes them feel re-
spected (53 percent) and understood (45 percent). However, Wood says if your gaze becomes a continuous, unrelenting stare throughout an entire conversation, it may signal to the other person that you’re trying to assert your dominance. This can be problematic in many situations, particularly in the workplace, so make sure you’re being attentive but not overly aggressive with your eye contact. * Certain conditions can alter your eye contact. Sometimes, you send messages with your eyes without realizing it. For example, Chronic Dry Eye disease symptoms, like red, itching, burning or watering eyes, can send the wrong message - one you don’t intend. Additionally, Wood shares that an action like rubbing your eyes can convey a lack of interest, fatigue, disagreement or disbelief in the speaker or even deceit. * The amount of eye contact you display can show how you feel about things. Research shows that eye contact can demonstrate attraction or attentiveness. You actually make more eye contact with people and things you like and less eye contact with people or things you don’t like. Wood notes that our eye language makes us look at things that are new or interesting, especially faces, or look away from things that we find distasteful. So if you’re curious about how a certain person feels about you, pay attention to how much they look at you. When it comes to nonverbal communication, your eyes are one of the most expressive parts of your body, even if don’t realize it. In fact, Wood says that research shows we can read not only the
six basic emotions - sadness, disgust, anger, joy, fear and surprise - but also over 50 different mental states such as curiosity, interest, dislike or boredom, in another person’s eyes. Live-edge hardwood, in which the sides of the slab are left unmilled to retain the natural profile of the tree trunk, is an increasingly popular decorative trend in today’s residential interiors. The technique is not only used for pieces of standalone furniture such as tables and benches but also for built-in elements like shelving, mantles, counter tops, bars and kitchen islands.
“Most mills cut off the rough tree edges, turning the raw timber into neat boards,” says Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com. “But the current demand for live-edge slabs has led to a small but vigorous subset of producers who specialize in the category.” These are often boutique businesses that source, dry and mill limited batches of timber for use in furniture
of their own design and manufacture. “Some larger sawmills sell live-edge slabs to the public,” Jovanovich continues. “You visit their showroom and pick your own one-of-a-kind piece of ash, cherry, red oak, walnut or whatever other hardwood species they have in stock. logs were taken to an upstate mill to be sawn into live-edge slabs and dried before being shipped back to Brooklyn, where they were either sold or used by RE-CO for tables, desks, bar counters, shelves, headboards and other beautiful custom-made pieces it produces. “It was George Nakashima, the legendary Japanese-American mid-century furniture maker, who pioneered the use of live-edge slabs in refined residential settings,” says New York-based designer Glenn Gissler. “Previously, untrimmed wood planks, sometimes with the bark still intact, were used for rustic, logcabin or ranch-house effects - elements that referenced the traditions, myths and aesthetics of the American Old West. With his gorgeous large-scale pieces, comprising multiple slabs of characterful woods like walnut and cherry connected with butterfly joints, Nakashima showed us how unfinished natural edges and richly figured knotted surfaces fit perfectly into even the most sophisticated urban interiors.”
Today, original Nakashima pieces are highly collectible and command high prices at auction. But his free-edge aesthetic is more influential than ever as homeowners discover the ability of liveedge furniture to work with almost any decorative style. Paired with blackened-steel legs, for example, a live-edge slab of burled walnut creates a dining table with loftworthy industrial chic. Fixed to the bedroom wall, a freeform expanse of warm-toned cherry provides a romantic headboard. Or a hefty liveedge slab of oak, supported on an equally hefty oak-slab base, makes for a monumental console with the presence of a piece of archaic sculpture. New York-based designer Laura Bohn has even used the chainsawed cross-section of an elm trunk - complete with its bark - as a counter top on which to mount a stainless steel powder-room sink. “It introduces a decidedly rustic note into a thoroughly modern space,” she says. “And yet it looks perfectly natural, as if it had just grown there of its own accord.”

2017 Lincoln Continental is just the thing for Baby Boomers By David Schmidt AutoWritersInk
Bravo to Ford Motor Company for creating a Lincoln Continental which deserves this name. Back in the day they, and the Cadillac Eldorado, defined post-war luxury personal transportation. They were also expensive enough that the wannabes really couldn’t afford them. But this 2017 Continental is relatively inexpensive among full-sized luxury competitors. More importantly it has what it takes to compete for buyers in the U.S. First, it looks like a luxury car. The Continental is big, the hood is long, so its proportions are correct. Its lines are elegant. It is graceful. This car looks modern, but in a very classic way. The front end is perhaps the most sophisticated “face” Lincoln has put on
a car in decades. The rear end is simple, but chic. Most importantly, it looks good in black – the proper color for a luxury car. Okay I know silver and white are the most popular, but that doesn’t make it right. The interior is spacious and looks as good as it feels. It has been a long time since I could use the word elegant to describe an American-car’s interior. It has plenty of features, but none of them shout “look at me, ain’t I cool?” From its real wood to its controls simplicity, this interior quietly tells you this is a modern luxury car. I really liked the transmission buttons, which both look good and communicate this mixture of classic and modern. The front seats are seriously comfortable and can be adjusted in a myriad of ways to get it just the way the sitter wants it to be. Sitting in back you optionally

The front seats are seriously comfortable and can be adjusted in a myriad of ways to get it just the way the sitter wants it to be. have control of audio and climate control, and reclining heated and cooled seats. The optional Revel audio system uses 19 speakers and Clari-Fi technology to manipulate the sound, letting you choose from the three modes – stereo, surround and concert. It sounds good blasting the Byrds or murmuring Mozart. Second, it performs as a luxury car should. That doesn’t mean its high performance, that’s not its job. What it does is carry people safely, comfortably, quietly. Its performance is that its performance rarely gets noticed, as its not supposed to. There are three engines available on the Continental, as well as front- or allwheel drive. That’s the reason why the price range runs from the low $40K to the high $70K. The base engine 3.7-liter V-6 generating 305-hp. And 280 lb.-ft. of peak torque. This will ad-
equately power the car and allows an EPA rating of 17mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway. Once you get to the midlevel trim you can opt for the 335-hp. 2.7-liter twinturbocharged V-6. This develops 380 lb.-ft. of peak torque. Its EPA fuel rating is 18-mpg city and 27-mpg on the highway. If you want to push the envelope a bit, the top-end 3.0-liter V-6 uses twin-turbos and overhead cams to generate 400hp. And 400 lb.-ft. of peak torque. This is a thoroughly modern engine, one that you can raise the hood around your buddies with pride. The EPA says your powerplant is rated at 16-mpg city and 24-mpg highway. As if you care if you order this engine. I am a bit surprised that all of these engines send the power through a sixspeed automatic transmission. Perhaps there will be
an update sometime in the next few model years, because the newer eight, and even ten-speed transmissions do have an impact of fuel efficiency. You can get the Continental in AWD, and my guess is that, except in the South, most people will opt for it. The system uses torque vectoring to divide and send the proper power to the rear wheels when cornering, or in slippery conditions. Worth having. You can change the ride and handling characteristics between Comfort, Normal and Sport to change the steering and suspension setups. No matter what you choose, the continuously controlled damping smooths things out. Third, it’s got the gadgets. For example, when you approach, the LED lamps glow and a pool of light forms beneath the front doors. Not unique, but cool. The telematics and infotainment are first rate, offering all it should. Many of these provide more safety and driver assistance. These include radar and camera technology to scan the roadway ahead for the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. It also is used by other systems, such as the adaptive cruise control, and emergency brake assist. The Pedestrian Detection feature help avoid folks in front of the car. There is even an assist system for both parallel and perpendicular parking so the driver only has to control the brake and gas
pedals. Personally, parallel parking is the test I use to determine whether I should still be driving. Finally, it’s got a market. Granted, those who must have a Seven-Series or an SClass won’t even bother to look. But one of the greatest group of potential customers will find this right up their alley. Who are they? Baby Boomers. Think about it. They are well in their sixties. They are the generation who changed things. They bought VW Beetles and Honda’s early Civics. They are the customers who bought full-sized and flashy vans. They are the people who killed the station wagon, because they simply were not going to be like their parents. Many of them are more aff luent than they ever thought they’d be. Boomers will not be told what to do. So, if the guys in the golf club poo-poo anything but German iron or Japanese plush, these grumpy and contrarian boomers may turn to what might be called American pragmatic luxury. Just to be irritating, they may hike into their Lincoln dealerships. When they get there, they can go cheap if they choose. The 2017 Continental starts at $44,500 for a front-wheel-drive model. Moving up the trim levels as well as adding the more powerful engines and allwheel drive can get the final sticker price of a Continental to $77,170. But there are plenty of price, as well as equipment steps between those two extremes.
