Week 13

THINGS WHICH MUST SHORTLY COME TO PASS A STUDY OF REVELATION—PART 13 It continues to be important to remember certain truths from our study of Revelation. We have seen the Christ (Chapter 1), the church (Chapters 2, 3), and now the consummation (Chapters 4-22). The church was removed from the earth in Revelation 4:1.

I.

A FURTHER REVIEW IS SEEN A. We have seen the throne room of God. (Revelation 4, 5) B. We have noted the seven-sealed scroll. (Revelation 5) 1. The scroll represents the forfeiture of earth’s mortgage. 2. Jesus was qualified to open the scroll. (Revelation 5:5) C. Six seals were opened. (Revelation 6) D. An intermission was seen in Revelation 7. 1. One hundred and forty-four thousand Jews were sealed to preach the kingdom message. 2. Great multitudes were saved as a result. (Revelation 6:9) E. The seventh seal was opened in Revelation 8:1. 1. The seventh seal became the first trumpet judgment. (Revelation 8) 2. Four trumpet judgments are seen in Chapter 8.

II.

THE FIFTH TRUMPET JUDGMENT IS SOUNDED (REVELATION 9:1-12) A. These judgments pick up momentum in severity. B. In this chapter, we see a lot of what we see a little of today. 1. In this chapter, we meet real demons out of the bottomless pit. 2. When the restraint is lifted from the earth, demons are constrained to bring full fury upon this earth. C. The star fallen is seen. (Revelation 9:1) 1. The word “fall” is in a tense which means “fallen.” 2. The star was a person. a. “Him” (9:1) b. “He” (9:2) c. “A king over them.” (9:11) 3. Some believe him to be Satan. 4. Some believe him to be the same angel of Revelation 20:1-3. D. The bottomless pit. (Revelation 9:1) 1. The phrase “bottomless pit” is used seven times in Revelation. 2. “Bottomless pit” is used three times in this chapter. 3. It is a place of incarcerated demons. 4. The term is not the same as Hell. 5. It is the ancient penitentiary for evil spirits.

6. Demons are therein reserved in chains. (II Peter 2:4) 7. The demons in Luke 8:31 knew of this place and asked the Lord not to send them there. 8. Satan will be placed there during the reign of Christ on earth. (Revelation 20:1, 2) 9. The Antichrist will ascend out of this pit. (Revelation 11:7) E. The fallen star was given the key to the bottomless pit. (9:1) 1. The fallen star does not have complete authority over the pit because he had to be given authority before he could loose the demons. 2. The bottomless pit was opened and the smoke filled the earth. (9:2) a. When the fourth trumpet had sounded one third of the heavenly lights had been put out. (8:12) b. Now the sun and air are further darkened by the smoke coming from this furnace of fire. (9:2) F. The invasion of planet earth is seen. (9:3) 1. An army of demons invade this earth. (Revelation 9:3) 2. Locusts come out of the pit with unstoppable power. (Revelation 9:3) G. These hordes of monster-creatures are described on earth. 1. They looked like horses prepared to battle. (Revelation 9:7) a. The prophet Joel foretold these invaders: i. Joel 2:4: “The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.” ii. Joel 2:5: “Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.” iii. Joel 2:7: “They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their rank.” iv. Joel 2:9: “They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.” b. Many will look out their windows and see these demonic creatures looking in their windows. c. Many will hear them walking upon their roofs. d. Terror will fill their minds and hearts. 2. “as it were crowns like gold” on their heads. (9:7) a. The crows are symbolic of power. b. The demons out of Hell think they are in charge of the world. 3. “Their faces were as the faces of men.” (9:7) a. They have intelligence like men

b. Imagine an image with the body like a horse and a head like a man c. They obeyed commands and orders d. They could discern between those who had the seal of God and those who did not. e. They do not function out of blind instinct but rational thought. 4. Their hair was “As the hair of women” Revelation 9:8 a. Women’s hair is a covering. (I Corinthians 11:15) b. Their covering is a deceptive covering. c. Their motive is destruction. (Revelation 9:10) 5. Their “teeth were as the teeth of lions.” (Revelation 9:8) a. They will be fierce predators. b. Unarmed humans are no match for a lion, neither will the world stand in their presence. c. They will rend, tear and destroy. 6. They had “breastplates of iron”. (Revelation 9:9) a. Picture mighty horses pawing the ground, snorting in fury and covered with armor. b. The armor speaks of the demons invulnerability. c. This is battlefield language and the world has become such. 7. They had wings which sounded like “chariots of many horses running to battle.” (Revelation 9:9) a. They will rush into battle swiftly like the wind. b. Their description is again found in Joel 2 (previous). c. These demon hordes out of Hell are inescapable. 8. They had “tails like unto scorpions.” (Revelation 9:3,5,10) H. The affliction of the demons out of the bottomless pit. 1. They are to hurt men. (Revelation 9:10) 2. They have a single aim: a. They are to injure the human race. (Revelation 9:4) b. They are to injure the human race for five months. (9:5) c. They have a voracious appetite for unregenerate people. d. They are given Christ-rejecting men for their prey. I. The results of their affliction. 1. The population suffers the pain as if it were the pain of a scorpion. (9:5) a. Scorpions cause painful burning. b. Scorpions cause swelling. c. Scorpions cause numbness. d. Scorpions can cause an individual to go into shock.

e. Scorpions cause some of the most painful suffering known to man. 2. The suffering is so terrible the populace seeks to die. (9:6) 3. In their desire to die death flees from them. (9:6) 4. Imagine agony so great that: a. Men who normally flee from death will flee toward death. b. Men will desire to end their lives and cannot. c. Men will chase death only to find he cannot be found. d. Men will experience hell on earth before they go to Hell. What the demons out of Hell could not do: 1. They could not hurt the “grass of the earth”. (9:4) 2. They could not hurt “any green thing”. (9:4) 3. They could not hurt “any tree”. (9:4) 4. They could not hurt those with the “seal of God”. (9:4) a. God protects His own. b. If He can protect His own during the mass of the Tribulation, certainly He can do the same today. Some closing truths about their leader: (9:11) 1. He is called “a king”. (9:11) 2. To the Hebrew Jew he is “Abaddon”. (9:11) 3. To the rest of the world he is “Apollyon”. (9:11) 4. The Hebrew and Greek words to the whole world means “destroyer”. Imagine what would happen if all the prison doors of the world were flung open. What if every: a. Murderer were released? b. Rapist were released? c. Arsonist were released? d. Thief were released? e. Criminal for whatever reason were released and turned lose on the world? Thank God we have “Been delivered from the wrath to come”. (I Thessalonians 1:10)
