Years ago I attended, what at the time I thought was, the ‘best ever’ Vacation Bible School. I learned that God was part of everything, not just part of a Bible story I read. I met new people, who are now old friends and had an amazing time. To this day, I still remember the first Bible verse I ever learned and memorized. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5–6 (niv) Fast forward quite a few years and I’ve found truly the ‘best ever’ Bible school. I volunteer for VBS because I know first-hand what a difference VBS makes in the lives of the children who enter our church’s doors. VBS gives me an opportunity to connect with the children in our church and community. I get to be the ‘salt’ God refers to: a way to create change—every day of VBS holds the opportunity of allowing me to share my gifts, while planting the seed of faith in those who not only attend, but also volunteer. I also can be a ‘light’: brightening the world around me. Southwood has supplied me with a chance to make sure those who come to VBS, whether children or volunteers, learn God’s word and feel his love. Being on the VBS team allows me the chance to be a stepping stone in the faith journey of everyone at VBS! What a wonderful opportunity!

Effective Listening in a High-Tech World

In today’s high-tech, high-speed, high-stress world, communication is more important than ever, yet we seem to devote less and less time to really listening to one another. Genuine listening has become a rare gift—the gift of time. It helps build relationships, solve problems, ensure understanding, resolve conflicts, and improve accuracy. At work, effective listening means fewer errors and less wasted time. At home, it helps develop resourceful, self-reliant kids who can solve their own problems. Listening builds friendships and careers. It saves money and marriages. Try these tips for effective listening: ff Listen with your eyes—Stop what you are doing and maintain eye contact and focus on what they are saying.

ff Keep an open mind—Listen without judging or jumping to conclusions until they are done and ready for your thoughts. ff Try to feel what the speaker is feeling—Empathy is the heart and soul of good listening. Source: www.forbes.com/sites/womensmedia/2012/11/09
