Hill City Church

Thrive - Guide

Thrive / Part 1

Reading:

2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

-1 Timothy 3:2-3

Getting Started  Read the above verses  1. Knowing that these words were written as qualifications for  Elders/Overseers, what about these are different from what is expected  from all believers?  a. How does this fall in line with what God wants to see in us?

Digging in  2. What role in the church do you see yourself in?  a. How would that role help the body in achieving its purpose to  glorify God and bring those who don’t know Him closer to Him?  b. How would you go about obtaining and achieving that?

Going Deeper  These last two weeks, we have looked at God’s original creative design, one  that created man and woman to compliment each other. At Hill City, we hold to  this view of what is called complementarianism, that God created man and woman  equal in value and personhood and equal in bearing His image. Within this  framework, we have been given distinct roles in both marriage, and the church.

  ●

Complementarianism  ○

Men  ○

In a perfect world, what does it look like when men and women are  functioning in the way that God intended it?  ■ How can the church (and Hill City specifically) reflect  this?  How has/does society get this wrong?  ■ What are the implications of getting this wrong?  Read Genesis 2:5-7, 15  ■ According to these verses, why was man formed?  ● Why then is laziness a sin?  ○ How do you combat this sin?  ● What is the opposite of laziness? How is it similar to  laziness and how can it be just as damaging?  ○ How do you combat this sin?  ○ Do you lean towards one of these over the other?

Women  ○ What is the impact of God saying “it is not good for man to be  alone” rather than man asking for help?  ○ Read Genesis 2:15-18  ■ Read the following Psalms:  ● 33:20  ● 70:5  ● 115:9-11  ● 121:1-2  ■ The word Helper here in the Hebrew (‘ezer; pronounced  ay-zer) is the same one used to describe woman in Genesis 2,  how has truth been misconstrued?  ○ What would a marriage look like where a man humbly does the best  he can and the wife steps into her role as ‘ezer?

Impact of Genesis 3  ○ How is David like Christ in this story?  ■ Why is this important?  ○ What do you think would have happened if another Israelite, out of  pride and arrogance stepped up to fight Goliath?  ■ Where in your life have you tried to step in and not allow  the ‘Better David’ (Jesus) to fight this fight for you?  ■ How has Jesus been your ‘Champion’?

Application

1. Impact of Genesis 3

The impact of the fall in Genesis 3 has been deeply rooted in creation ever  since it occurred. Many hurts, pains, and wounds have happened because of  creation straying away from its intended design.  ○

Read Genesis 3:16

Hebrew words to note:  1. Desire -> Teshuwqah (tesh-oo-kah); meaning desire to  conquer  2. Rule -> Mashal (mah-shall); meaning to rule harshly  What happened to the roles of men and women after the fall?  ■ Where have you seen this play out in your life the most?  ■

Reflection  1. How has Christ and the Gospel redeemed what happened in Genesis 3?  2. What do you need to do to work on becoming the man or woman that God  wants you to be in regards to His original design?  3. How can I better use my skills that God has given me (either as a man or  woman) to serve Him and His Church?
