FROM BIRCH BARK CANOES TO SALTIES

Vessels of Trade & Commerce

BY MICHELLE MCCHRISTIE

BOATS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT THE CENTRE OF TRADE AND COMMERCE IN THE THUNDER BAY AREA. FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLES NAVIGATED LAKE SUPERIOR AND ITS TRIBUTARIES VIA BIRCH BARK CANOE AND LATER, EUROPEANS ADOPTED THEIR WAYS TO EXPLORE THE AREA AND ESTABLISH FURTRADING POSTS. BOATS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF EACH OF THIS REGION’S INDUSTRIES, PARTICULARLY FOR THE IMPORT AND EXPORT OF COMMODITIES THAT HAVE SPURRED ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROSPERITY.

Evidence of the use of canoes in the Thunder Bay area dates back several hundred years as the likeness of a canoe is depicted on a mazinaawbikinigeen (pictograph) on the cliffs of Pictured Lake, located about 27 kilometres southwest of the city. It’s a little-known fact that the Canadian Canoe Museum’s logo is a replica of this pictograph—the museum’s founder began using the image as a sign of respect for indigenous peoples. When Europeans arrived in search of furs in the 1600s, they learned to navigate the web of rivers and lakes from indigenous peoples who also passed along their knowledge of canoe-building. Using materials from the earth—birch bark, white cedar, and spruce roots—they built vessels to withstand the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield and the heavy loads of supplies and furs hauled to and from remote trading posts. Travelling the waterways of this area was no easy task as the topography lends itself to foaming

whitewater torrents that are impassable by canoe. Grand Portage, just south of the border in Minnesota, is so-named due to its location on an infamous 35-kilometre-long footpath that avoids a series of waterfalls and rapids on the Pigeon River. Imagine trudging along that portage with a handful of crewmates carrying a canoe over seven metres long and weighing about 140 kilograms, plus 25-30 pieces of cargo! No doubt, there was a feeling of exaltation when voyageurs reached Fort William— the Northwest Company fur trading post that operated in the early 1880s. As mining and forestry replaced the fur trade as the focus of commerce, larger vessels replaced the humble birch bark canoe. The completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway line from Fort William to Winnipeg in 1882 was a boon for the local economy as goods shipped to the city could be easily transported further west. A shipbuilding company sprang up in Port Arthur and local entrepreneur James Whalen put the “port” in Port Arthur by

investing heavily in the shipping industry (his tugboat, built in 1906 to tow heavy steamers and break ice a metre thick, is moored at the Kaministiquia Riverfront Heritage Park). Whalen, who envisioned that the city would prosper as “the Chicago of the North,” would surely be impressed by the activity on the waterfront. The Port of Thunder Bay remains the largest outbound port on the Great Lakes seaway and the gateway to Western Canada. In terms of bragging rights, the port has the largest grain storage capacity in North America and is the only port on the seaway that exports potash. In the ice-free months, it is common to see multiple salties (ocean vessels) in the harbour against the backdrop of the Sleeping Giant. It’s a picturesque scene, perhaps not all that different from that of the bygone era when people travelled by birch bark canoe—the iconic landforms and intricate network of waterways that generations of people travelled before us remain the same.

Getting back to their roots: Fort William First Nation youth learn the traditional craft of building birch bark canoes.

8

THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE

2018

IT’S A COOL, MISTY MORNING AT THE POWWOW GROUNDS ON ANEMKI WAJIW, WHICH OVERLOOKS THE CITY OF THUNDER BAY ON FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION. A GROUP OF FOUR YOUTH ARE PREPARING THE WORKSPACE AND MATERIALS TO BUILD A BIRCH BARK CANOE. THEY’VE ALREADY GATHERED THE BARK, SPRUCE ROOTS, CEDAR, AND SPRUCE GUM FROM THE LAND, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THEIR ANCESTORS. IT’S PART OF A RESURGENCE OF OJIBWE CULTURE AT FORT WILLIAM, BUT WHAT MIGHT APPEAR TO BE A LESSON ABOUT CRAFTMANSHIP IS REALLY ABOUT RESPECT—FOR THE LAND, THEIR CULTURE, AND EACH OTHER.

Both Bannon and Lentz are passionate about providing opportunities for youth to explore and feel the connection and relationship to the land. “A connection back to the land is a connection to culture, language, community and in the end ourselves,” says Lentz. “Working up on Anemki Wajiw (Mt. McKay), I think it is the key to getting these kids outside and experiencing the land that they live on,” says Bannon. She knows building a canoe is meaningful to the youth, “it’s not just sitting in an office or you’re not just doing somebody’s grunt work, they get to actually build something... it’s not something you’re done in a few hours, it’s a lot of touching and feeling—they get to really experience the materials that we use.”

As European settlers imposed their culture on indigenous peoples, it became increasingly challenging to retain skills, like building birch bark canoes or even knowing the Ojibwe words to describe the materials and the process. Like many indigenous communities, Fort William First Nation is working to change that by engaging youth in hands-on projects.

An integral part of the build is collecting all of the materials used from the land. As Tanya Fenton says, “it’s incredible to be able to know how to build something from scratch.” The youth learn how to choose and harvest materials and use them wisely: “they show great respect for the resources because they know how much work it is to get them,” says Lentz. Bannon believes there is a deeper lesson in all of this and that showing respect for the resources is showing respect for oneself.

© Goh Iromoto

Perhaps one of the proudest moments for the youth involved in canoe-building is when elders visited and expressed their happiness at seeing them learning a traditional craft and connecting with Ojibwe culture. “It’s all about teaching the youth so that they can pass it on,” says Bannon. “What the whole practice of building a canoe does for you with self confidence and pride, trying new things and being more connected to the environment.”

© Goh Iromoto

For the past three years, Gail Bannon, Fort William First Nation’s community and recreational coordinator, has taught youth to build birch bark canoes completely by hand in the tradition of their ancestors. Bannon learned the ins and outs of canoe-building from Darren Lentz, an elementary school principal who learned the craft while working at Fort William Historical Park and from elders at Fort William First Nation. When they started talking about building canoes, Bannon realized that she didn’t know of anyone in her community with knowledge of canoe-building: “I don’t know of anybody in my mother’s generation that knows—and maybe they do but they just don’t do it any more. And I thought: how could we have lost that?”

THE

GREATEST

LAKE Bucket List Adventures on Lake Superior

KITCHI-GAMI, LAKE SUPERIOR, LAC SUPÉRIEUR— THE GREATEST OF THE GREAT LAKES. AN IMMENSE BODY OF WATER THAT HAS SHAPED THE CLIMATE, CULTURE, AND ECONOMY OF ITS REGION. WITH A POPULATION OF ROUGHLY 122,000, THUNDER BAY IS THE LARGEST CITY ON THE LAKE AND MARKS THE END OF THE GREAT LAKES ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY—A WATERWAY THAT EXTENDS 3,700 KM (2,340 MILES) TO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

24

THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE

2018

Spending time on and around the lake is a lifestyle for many of us lucky enough to live here and a bucket list experience for others. Maybe you’ve always wanted to hike to the top of the Sleeping Giant, stay in a lighthouse, or circumnavigate the lake via motorcycle—the question is: what are you waiting for? Here is some inspiration for your bucket list.

© Goh Iromoto

BY MICHELLE MCCHRISTIE

Lake Superior dwarfs other lakes in size and volume and its north shore boasts the largest stretch of wilderness shoreline in the entire Great Lakes system. With Thunder Bay as the ultimate basecamp, the possibilities for adventure in any season are practically unlimited. The shoreline from Thunder Bay to Pukaskwa National Park features the highest cliffs in Ontario along the iconic Sleeping Giant, world-renowned sea kayaking and sailing, hiking and mountain biking, some of the best surf on the Great Lakes, and a range of accommodations, from backcountry and RV campsites to quaint B&Bs and cozy motels.

A North Shore Trip to Fill Your Bucket List

We know. You’ve been thinking about visiting the north shore of Lake Superior for years, but you just haven’t found the time. Well, guess what? You don’t actually need that much time! Thunder Bay is a short flight from major cities like Toronto and Chicago and only a six-hour drive from Minneapolis (plus, it’s a nice drive during which your stress will melt away as you head further north).

1 DAY

Arrive in Thunder Bay in the afternoon by plane, boat, motorcycle, RV, car, etc. Make a beeline for the marina, set sail with Sail Superior, and chart a course for the Welcome Islands while enjoying views of Nanabijou (the Sleeping Giant).

Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or grab some take out and head to the lookout at Anemki Wajiw (Mt. McKay) at Fort William First Nation or Hillcrest Park. Alternatively, if you are really adventurous, head to Shuniah Mines to squeeze in some mountain biking or the Bluffs to rock climb—all four locations are within a 30-minute drive of the marina. Check-in at a local campground, B&B or hotel.

2 DAY

After breakfast (Finn pancakes are a local specialty), head to Wilderness North’s floatplane base and board a charter to Porphyry Island, east of the Black Bay Peninsula. Once there, explore the island and spend the night in the lighthouse maintained by the not-for-profit group Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior.

3 DAY

4 5 DAY

Travel to Rossport to kayak among the Rossport Islands—the largest archipelago on Lake Superior—or hike the Casque Isles Trail which follows the rugged shoreline east to Terrace Bay.

Check-in at a nearby campground or B&B and dine in Rossport (fresh Lake Trout is a local specialty).

DAY

Travel to Pukaskwa National Park, stopping in Terrace Bay for lunch and to climb to the top of the lighthouse downtown. The lighthouse is a replica of the one at the Slate Islands and provides an amazing view of the lake and the islands. Once at Pukaskwa, explore the many hiking trails, learn about local Anishinaabe culture at the visitor centre and stroll along the beach.

Here’s a seven-day itinerary that packs in more bucket list experiences than you can shake a stick at.

Spend the night at the campground, the Pic River Guest Suite at Ojibways of the Pic River First Nation or at a hotel in nearby Marathon.

6 DAY

Travel by floatplane back to Thunder Bay and then head east to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park to hike to the top of the Sleeping Giant and enjoy a packed lunch atop the highest cliffs in Ontario (don’t forget the Bay Meats beef jerky, Thunder Oak cheese and Chocolate Cow chocolate!). Check-in at the park campground or a cabin at Beyond the Giant Nature Retreats just outside the park. Enjoy an evening stroll or paddle along the shoreline and cook s’mores over a campfire.

Drive back to Thunder Bay, taking the time to pull off the highway to take in the scenic views at highway rest stops. Once back in the city, take a short drive out to Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park to see Ontario’s second highest waterfall, also known as Niagara of the North, or visit Fort William Historical Park—a reconstructed fur trade post located on the historic Kaministiquia River.

7 DAY

Travel home and dream about returning for an extended visit to complete the Lake Superior Circle Tour.

2018 THUNDER BAY ART GALLERY EVENT MINO-BIMAADIZIWIN: CHRISTI BELCOURT June 21-November 25, 2018 Thunder Bay Art Gallery Through her appealing and detailed works, Métis (Michif) artist Christi Belcourt invites the viewer to reflect on the cyclical relationship between people and nature. Belcourt creates her large-scale paintings in ‘dots’ by dipping the end of a paintbrush or knitting needle into paint and pressing it onto canvas. The results evoke the floral beadwork of 19th century Métis women. The artist’s finely-rendered view of the living world shows a stylized and peaceful ecosystem which shelters animals amid flowers, stems and complex root systems. Sacred healing plants such as tobacco and sweetgrass contribute to a vision of interconnectedness.

Mino-bimaadiziwin: Christi Belcourt is a mid-career retrospective that includes 20 to 25 of this popular artist’s paintings, as well as work from her collaborative practice with grassroots activist Isaac Murdoch. The Art Gallery will host a number of events and activities in conjunction with the exhibition. For further details visit theag.ca

Faces Behind Extraordinary Places BY JANINE CHIASSON

GAIL BANNON

Culture & Recreation Coordinator, Fort William First Nation Soaring 1,000 feet over the city and properly referred to as Anemki Wajiw (literally Thunder Mountain in Ojibwe), Mount McKay has been a sacred centre of Anishinaabe culture for centuries. Gail Bannon, as Culture and Recreation Coordinator, works to revitalize the culture of her reserve through customs and values rooted in traditional way of life. What better place to start than combining youth and the mountain? “At first, we couldn’t get any students to apply for jobs on the mountain,” Gail recounts. “So I got my 15-yearold twins to work with me and two more came on. The next year we had eight students, and now we have to cap it at twenty.”

In her private life, Gail is affectionately known as the birchbark lady who keeps busy making gorgeous birch bark baskets, business cards, and other traditional arts. “I don’t display my work,” she says, “people just ask and somehow it’s gone right away.” Visit Anemki Wajiw (Thunder Mountain) on the Fort William First Nation to find magnificent views, pow wow grounds, a cenotaph and tiny Jesuit chapel, wooden statues honouring Ojibwe elders, a hiking trail to the top of the mountain, and if you’re lucky, the Mountain Keepers. www.fwfn.com

During the season, it is my great honour to be on the mountain everyday.

© Destination Ontario

The Mountain Keeper crew doesn’t just learn to be safe around lawnmowers; they get teachings about the mountain. “We had a cultural week this year where six of them did their first sweat and retrieved their names,” Gail says with pride. The Keepers also spend time in Gail’s favourite place – the bush – gathering materials for traditional crafts. “Over the last three summers,” says Gail, “we’ve made birch bark canoes.”

When James Raffan, Executive Director of The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, got word that “those youth are up there building canoes in the pow wow grounds” he hustled up for a visit. Now Gail and her Mountain Keepers are featured in The Canoe, a gorgeous film by Goh Iromoto.

ARIC FISHMAN

Outdoor Skills and Thrills, Owner + Operator For Aric Fishman, nothing is better than a day climbing. With a contagious gleam in his brown eyes, he describes exploring our region’s unique geology, playing on cliffs and snow and ice, witnessing incredible views down canyons and valleys, while watching eagles at eye level. “Some people may only experience this once in a lifetime, or never,” Aric says with regret. “But I can take people out and teach them the skills they need to do it on their own.”

In 2015, Aric incorporated Outdoor Skills and Thrills to make climbing accessible to everyone: families, groups, teams, businesses, or one-on-one. Aric believes “if you can walk, you can climb.” Want to explore climbing? Book an adventure with expert, accredited instructors and guides. If you have skills but need local advice, pick up Aric’s top-rated book, Thunder Bay Climbing: A Guide to Northwestern Ontario’s Best Kept Secret. And Outdoor Skills and Thrills has gear rental covered too. Learn more at outdoorskillsandthrills.com

I’m passionate about sharing the life-changing benefits of climbing.

© Taylor Green

© Aric Fishman

When Aric arrived in Thunder Bay in 2007 to study Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism at Lakehead University, he instantly fell in love with Northwestern Ontario climbing and says simply, “It is world-class.” Word is getting out about our multiple solid rock types, incredibly accessible cliffs, and total adventure spots where, in the middle of nowhere, you can make a groundbreaking first ascent. “We’re spoiled,” says

Aric. “Take ice climbing – even in a bad year we might have only 500 climbs, versus 1,000 in a good year.”

TAYLOR GREEN

Animikii Tours, Owner + Operator “I am a tourist too,” says Taylor Green, who has spun his love to explore offbeat places into a niche tourism experience – Animikii Tours. Always on the lookout to uncover Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario’s hidden gems, Taylor creates and guides unique tour itineraries jam-packed with his love for history, cultural attractions, and natural beauty. With years of experience in tourism, Taylor wanted to build his own brand of intimate tours and knew that Thunder Bay, the city where he spent summers at the Chippewa family cottage and holidays at Grandma’s house, was the perfect city to showcase. Taylor has offered his all-inclusive tour service for three years and hosted guests from around the world including folks from Spain, Germany, Finland, Britain, India, and South Africa. His clients choose from a robust selection

of carefully curated options like the popular full day Mines and Mountains Tour that includes the Sleeping Giant, Ouimet Canyon and a working amethyst mine, or the Secrets of Superior Tour with a charter expedition on gorgeous Lake Superior. For tight timelines, Taylor offers 1.5-hour city tours, and half-day excursions like the Steel Ribbon or First Nations Heritage tours. “I never want to stop being passionate about what I do,” Taylor emphasizes. He proves it in the off-season when he rolls up his sleeves to dig for new places, events, and stories to weave into fresh visitor experiences. Learn more online at www.animikiitours.com.

Thunder Bay’s BEST KEPT SECRETS BY ROBIN MOSS

Built on a proud tradition of top notch customer service and personal attention, these are some of Thunder Bay’s best kept secrets – at least for anyone visiting the city. For the locals, they’re anything but.

A

TailorMade

Visiting a tailor might not be at the top of your to-do list during your stay in the city, but if you’ve ever considered investing in a bespoke suit, now might just be the time. Because when it comes to quality tailoring in Thunder Bay, there’s really only one name you need to know.

EXPERIENCE

RAFFAELE’S TAILORING

THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE

2018

At Raffaele’s Tailoring you’ll find cosmopolitan style and service in an intimate and relaxed setting. With thousands of stylistic options to choose from, you could easily spend hours poring over luxurious fabric swatches, buttons, stitching, linings, and other accoutrements. So give yourself plenty of time to do it right. In fact, Raffaele recommends setting aside at least 3 hours. “I want it to be an experience”, he says with pride. “You can look through everything at your own speed. Make notes. Then when it comes to deciding on style or you want advice, that’s when I step in. That part of the time I spend, there’s no charge. I have a passion for fashion, I’ve had it all my life and I don’t want it ever to stop.” With made to measure suits ranging from $450 to “the sky’s the limit”, the prices at Raffaele’s Tailoring are exactly what you’d expect to pay in the big city. But then the quality is too.

© Scott MacKay

Raffaele’s Tailoring was established in 2003, when lifelong fashion aficionado Raffaele Tassone opened his own shop on the once bustling commercial thoroughfare of Simpson Street. After 14 years of steady trade, built on quality workmanship and positive word of mouth, Raffaele was able to move the business to its present location. With expanded retail space upstairs and a considerably larger tailoring shop downstairs, the new shop allows for a much wider range of services, the most recent being madeto-measure suits and dresses.

MUSIC WORLD

What: Thunder Bay’s Premier Music Store Who: Cosimo Riccio and Family Where: 443 Simpson Street Find them: musicworldacademy.com Whether you’re a professional musician, a casual hobbyist, or don’t have a musical bone in your body, no visit to Thunder Bay would be complete without dropping by Music World. Established by Cosimo Riccio back in the mid ’70s, Music World has been a permanent presence on Simpson Street for the past 40 years, first as a teaching academy and gradually growing to become what it is today – Thunder Bay’s premier music store. Still owned and operated by Cosimo to this day – with the help of his two sons, Enzo and Joe; his daughter Emily; and various extended family members – Music World is the epitome of a local family-run business. Selling everything from drums, electric pianos, and keyboards, to amplifiers, music books, and parts and accessories, it’s something of a musical mecca for musicians in Northwest Ontario and parts of the U.S. But it’s the guitars that are the real draw. Featuring hundreds of high-end electric guitars made by Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, and Jackson to name but a few; and breathtakingly gorgeous acoustics produced by Martin, Taylor, Larrivee and more; browsing the showroom at Music World is a borderline spiritual experience.

What: Purveyor of Fine Men’s and Women’s Fashions and Footwear Who: Jack, Barbara, and Andrew Moro Where: 122 Frederica Street West Find Them: jbevans.ca Based in the Westfort area of Fort William, J.B. Evans is a 104-year-old family business with as storied a history as the neighbourhood in which it’s located. Capitalizing on the opportunities afforded in the booming pioneer city of Fort William, John Beaconsfield Evans opened his own clothing store on October 1st, 1912 at 122 W. Frederica Street, where it remains to this day. Originally a men’s only store selling workwear, footwear, blankets and more, J.B. Evans now specializes in top brand, quality men’s and women’s fashions and footwear, backed by the kind of service you’d expect from a four-generation family establishment with over 100 years in the biz. Though no longer the bustling hotspot it once was, fashionistas of all stripes still flock to Frederica Street to snap up the latest sartorial sensations. “We’re a destination shop,” says owner Andrew Moro. “We know a lot of our customers on a first name basis. The second time they come back we know what they bought, we ask “how did that work out?” We get to know their family. It’s personal.” Offering big city shopping and trends with small town service and a range in price points, the folks at J.B. Evans know what it takes to run a successful business. “We’ve always been service-based. We’ve always tried to maintain that,” says Moro. “We really try to understand the customers’ needs, their lifestyle, their price range, their style and then we try to offer products and service to meet their needs.” Stop by J.B. Evans during your stay in Thunder Bay and expect to find more than just the latest fashions – expect a warm greeting and a retail experience that’s second to none.

Dressed FOR

SUCCESS

So next time you’re in the neighbourhood, stop in and witness first-hand one of Thunder Bay’s best kept secrets and one of the city’s most enduring local success stories. And while you’re there, don’t forget to check out ‘Portals in Time,’ the enormous eye-catching mural painted by Brian Nieminen that adorns the building’s southern exterior wall.

travel information

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Crossing the Border into Canada:

Land Ports of Entry

Both Canada Border Services and the U.S. Customs & Border Protection Agencies want you to have a good experience moving through the customs and border protection process. Learning about traveller entry forms, agricultural products allowed and prohibited, what items are dutiable, and other information about the process will help you move speedily through this process.

CROSSING THE CANADA-U.S. BORDER

WHAT CAN & CAN’T COME INTO CANADA

RESIDENTS RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES

All U.S. citizens aged 16 and older, entering Canada by air (including in-transit passengers who are transferring planes in the U.S.), land or water, must present one of the following documents: a passport or passport card; an Enhanced Driver’s License; or a Trusted Traveler Program Card (SENTRI, NEXUS or FAST Card). Travelers aged 15 and under require a birth certificate for land or sea travel and a passport for air travel. For current requirements go to: cic.gc.ca.

Residents of the United States who visit Canada are allowed to bring in a “reasonable” amount of personal goods duty free. The amount you bring should align with your length of stay.

Returning U.S. residents are eligible for an $800 duty-free personal exemption every 31 days, having remained no less than 48 hours beyond the territorial limits of the United States except U.S. Virgin Islands, in a contiguous country which maintains free zone or port, and has remained beyond the territorial limits of the United States not exceeding 24 hours. This exemption includes no more than 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars. Visit www.cbp.gov for more information.

If you are travelling with your own children under the age of 16 and your spouse, bring their birth certificates. If you are traveling with a child other than your own or without your spouse, have the child’s birth certificate along with a letter of permission, including name and contact information for that child’s parents/guardians or your spouse. Visitors from all other countries require a valid passport and, in some cases, a visitor’s visa.

There are limits for some of the regulated items: alcohol, tobacco and food products. What is and what is not allowed changes frequently, visit www.inspection.gc.ca for current information prior to your departure. Pets: Dogs and cats accompanying their owners from the U.S. must have current (within 36 months) rabies vaccination certificates. Owners from other countries who wish to bring their pets with them should contact 1-800-442-2342 / 1-613-225-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 or visit www.inspection.gc.ca Frequently asked questions: www.canadawelcomesyou.net www.travel.state.gov

The site is not far from the place where he ended his 5,342 km (3,339 mi) run, stricken with the disease that ended his life on June 28, 1981. Wheelchair accessible, washrooms, vending machines, picnic area, pay phone, and wireless internet available. Highway 11/17 (Thunder Bay Expressway), 1 km (.6 mi) east of Hodder Avenue. Open year-round. During peak season, open seven days a week 8:30 am to 7:30 pm. Labour Day (Sept.) to mid-June 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. Head up the winding Highway 71 that follows the shore of the magnificent Lake of the Woods to Kenora - a community full of culinary and cultural gems. Make sure you stop at Dryden’s Egli’s Sheep Farm to pick up something unique.

EXPLORE Discover its spectacular and storied coastline by car, motorcycle, kayak or sailing charter. You can explore quaint communities, play in the “extreme” or celebrate our Ahnisnabae culture in one of the many First Nations throughout the region.

WE LIVE IN A PRETTY AMAZING PART OF THE WORLD. WE WANT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.

FISH If angling is your game, the highways that head north from Highway 17 lead you to communities that are gateways to some of North America’s best freshwater angling where you’ll catch big fish, make new friends and reconnect with your family and environment.

WHERE

AM I?

EAGLE CANYON

LEGENDARY The concept of the Lake Superior Circle Tour was born in the Sixties when paved roadways made highway travel between Ontario and the Lake Superior states much easier. Konnie LeMay, editor of Lake Superior Magazine who also operates the website LakeSuperiorCircleTour.com, says they’ve “seen a continued blossoming of interest in the Circle Tour and visiting specific Lake Superior cities.” Albeit, there is no formal tracking system, she LeMay says they’ve also seen a surge in interest in the Lake Superior

Clue: Catch me at the canyon Circle Tour Club—a free club through which people can receive a certificate and window cling (bragging rights!) and are invited to share stories about and photos from their circle tour experience. In addition to travelling by car or motorcycle, people have walked, run, biked, hiked, paddled, and sailed around the lake—the ultimate bucket list experience!
