. who I a m I rejoice in Go d m y s av i o r

L uke 1:47

Welcome to Deep Blue W

e’re glad you’re here to dive deep with us into God’s Word. We’ll have adventures, hear exciting Bible stories, and learn how to live as disciples of Jesus. The Bible is more than just a big book. It’s a gift to us. The Bible is meant to be opened, explored, and enjoyed. With Deep Blue, we’ll open our Bibles and learn more about God, Jesus, faith, and how it all fits together into life today.

Meet the Deep Blue Crew! The Deep Blue Kids—Asia, Edgar, Kat, and Caleb—will lead the children through the Bible using animated videos that tell the story. The student resources and the Deep Blue Kids Bible are colorful and engaging, encouraging the children to “dive deeper” into the Bible and explore their faith in fun and age-appropriate ways. Hi! My name is Asia , and I love to talk. Well, not just talk. Communicate. Report on what I see. Friends think I might make it on TV one day, but for now, I’m just happy to document all the great discoveries we will make in Deep Blue. Hello. I’m pleased to meet you. My name is Edgar , and I’m always trying to figure things out. Some people say I’m too curious, but I just need to understand things. One of my favorite things to do is figure out how to get somewhere and then investigate everything I find in that new place. Join me and the rest of the Deep Blue Crew on our Deep
Blue adventures.

My name is Kat . I LOVE adventure, and I’ll bet you do too! We’re going to have so much fun in Deep Blue. There’s so much to discover and explore about the Bible and what the Bible has to say to us today. The most fun part is that we’ll be doing it together! I’m Caleb . I’m a little shy when I first meet people I don’t know, but I’m sure I’ll like you. I really care about animals, and I usually carry my pet turtle, Speedy, in my coat pocket. I just moved to town to live in the lighthouse with my mother and stepfather, and I’m excited to join the Deep Blue Crew! In Deep Blue , children will make Bible stories, Bible people, and Bible passages a part of their lives. The children will come to know the Bible as THEIR book and find ways to let the Bible speak to them today. Deep Blue is a comprehensive Bible study for children, incorporating the pillar stories of the Old and New Testaments. Deep Blue incorporates Bible stories, science activities, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a lived-faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today!

SESSION 1

Joseph and His Brothers Bible Verse

September 4 Bible Story Genesis 37: 1-36

The Lord was with Joseph. Genesis 39:2

Did You Know?

A

s we begin a new school year and a new year of Deep Blue, we will be reminded of how valuable it is to have wisdom and to depend on God’s wisdom. Today’s Scripture explores the relationship between Jacob and his sons. We need to remember that Jacob is also called Israel, the head of the people of God. The people are residing in Canaan, where Jacob has settled with his wives, children, and livestock. At this point in the story, Joseph is 17. Jacob has set Joseph aside as a special child. Joseph knows he is special and does not hesitate to remind his brothers of that. The relationship between Joseph and his brothers is tense and full of anger. In spite of knowing this, Joseph tells his brothers of his dreams. In describing his dreams, Joseph does not endear himself to his brothers at all. They respond by selling Joseph into slavery. As you explore this story with your group, remember that Older Elementary children are at a point where they can express their own issues of sibling rivalry. Some of the children may be the special child, and some may be the child who feels left out and alone. Neither child should be made to feel that he or she is judged in the Sunday school setting. Explore God’s relationship with Joseph and God’s wisdom in using Joseph to prepare a new land for Israel.

Anchor Point God is with us wherever we go.

I T’S A B ROT H E R T HING Supplies: Bibles

SAY: Our Bible story today is in Genesis 37:1—36. We meet Joseph and his brothers and hear about their relationship. Let’s look up the Scripture and read the story aloud. ASK: How do you think Joseph felt about being the next to the youngest with so many older brothers? How do you think the brothers felt about Joseph being the “special” son in Jacob’s eyes? I wonder how the brothers really felt after they sold Joseph into slavery. I wonder how God was working in this story of Joseph and his brothers.

Grow Stronger MA P Supplies: Class Stuff—pp. 15 & 18

Hang the “Map” (pp. 15 & 18) in the classroom.

SAY: Let’s look at our map of ancient times and find Egypt and see where Joseph was taken. Canaan, where Joseph grew up, was south of Jerusalem, near the coast of the Great Sea.

LI FE L I N E O F J OS EPH Supplies: Class Stuff—p. 10, marker

Hang “Lifeline of Joseph” (p. 10).

SAY: Jacob had a large family with many children. One of the younger sons was Joseph. Jacob treated Joseph as the favored child. Let’s fill in the lifeline for Jacob and Joseph up to this point. We will begin on one end and continue to add events in the coming weeks.

J E ALO U SY RO B E Supplies: tissue paper, construction paper, crepe paper, and any other lightweight paper; clear tape

ivide the class into groups of two or three. Have each group choose one person D to be Joseph. The others will work to create the long robe given to Joseph.

SAY: Joseph was Jacob’s favored son because he was the son of his wife, Rachel, whom he loved. Joseph’s brothers were jealous of him and really did not enjoy having him around. When Joseph was given a long robe by Jacob, this meant that he would not have to do much hard work. In those days, most men who worked out in the fields and with the sheep did not need long robes or coats. For Joseph to be given a long robe meant that he was not expected to work in the fields or with the sheep. His brothers were jealous. Each group will create a long robe. You have paper and tape to create this robe and fit it to your Joseph. After everyone has created the robes, we will look at each one and talk about the differences.

•  T IP  •

Use this a great opportunity to invite a visitor to help examine the robes and to discuss the differences.

ASK: As you were creating the Jealousy Robe, did you think about what Joseph’s brothers might have felt? Do you ever get jealous or feel that someone gets more than you? What do you do to deal with jealousy?

Worship PR AY ER AND P RAISE

• T IP  • Worship is an important part of your time with the children. Make sure your worship table is ready before the children arrive, or plan to have them assist in setting it up. Remember, candles help the children to experience the space as sacred. Lighting and extinguishing the candles can be class a ritual.

Supplies: Bibles, Bible Stories & Stuff—Songbook, Leader’s Guide—p. 12, DVD, DVD player, television or projector and screen, worship table, fabric to cover table, candle, lighter, cross, butcher paper or newsprint, markers

ang a large piece of butcher paper or newsprint in the worship space. H Photocopy “Graffiti Wall” (p. 12) and hang it with the paper. • Invite the children to gather around the worship center while you play this month’s song, “Oh, Brothers” (DVD). Using the Songbook, encourage the children to sing along.

SAY: As we begin our worship time, we will light our candle and think about the life of Joseph and his brothers and how God works in all situations. (Light the candle.) We have heard a lot about the life of Joseph today. On the wall is a large piece of paper; it’s our Graffiti Wall. For the next several weeks, we will write on our Graffiti Wall. With the markers, write a word or phrase about how you see God working in your life this week. Also write a word or phrase that makes you think about how God was working with Joseph. After everyone has written on the Graffiti Wall, we will talk about what you have written. • Give the children a few minutes to write on the paper; then ask who might share what they have written.

• T IP  • Encourage the children to check out the Deep Blue Kids App this week.

ASK: Before we close in prayer today, are there any prayer concerns? PRAY: Thank you, God, for Joseph and his brothers. We know, God, that you loved them as you love us. Amen. SAY: Take home your Bible Stories & Stuff. There are activities for you to dig deeper into today’s Scripture. • Give each child a copy of Bible Stories & Stuff—Session 1.

Joseph in Egypt Bible Verse The Lord was with Joseph. Genesis 39:2

Did You Know?

T

his week, we continue the story of Joseph. Joseph has been sold into slavery and now is doing his best to survive. Potiphar, a high-ranking official in the king’s court, has bought Joseph. In this situation, Joseph has gained the trust of Potiphar, but he must face being betrayed by Potiphar’s wife, who wants only to control Joseph. Now, Joseph experiences betrayal again, and imprisonment. Yet, while Joseph is in prison, he has the opportunity to interpret the dreams of others who are in prison with him. This opportunity provides him with the reputation of an interpreter of dreams. This will help Joseph in the long run. Today’s Scripture lesson presents issues that are a little sensitive, but it is important for understanding how Joseph was in the position of helping his family later. With your group, focus on Joseph’s being trusted by Potiphar and his dream interpretation.

ASK: How did you feel hearing the story of Joseph in Egypt away from his family and doing work for someone else? How do you think it felt for Joseph to have been betrayed and put in jail? I wonder if Joseph knew he was a leader. I wonder if you think you can be a leader like Joseph. I wonder how God was working in this story.

Grow Stronger MA P Supplies: Class Stuff—pp. 15 & 18, p. 24

Hang the “Map” (pp. 15 & 18) and the “Prison Poster” (p. 24) in the classroom.

SAY: Let’s look at our map of ancient times. Let’s remember that Joseph was in Egypt at this time. We also see the poster of the prison where Joseph lived for several years while waiting to be released. Prisons then were different from the prisons today.

LI FE L I N E O F J OS EPH Supplies: Class Stuff—p. 10, marker

Hang “Lifeline of Joseph” (p. 10).

SAY: Let’s add to the lifeline of Joseph for this week. What has happened to Joseph, and where has he been?

DR E A M S Supplies: Bibles, Leader’s Guide—p. 17, play dough

Photocopy “Dreams” (p. 17) for each child.

SAY: Joseph was known for his ability to interpret the meaning of dreams. People would tell their dreams to Joseph, and he would explain what the dream meant. God blessed Joseph with this gift. We all dream. Some may remember dreams more than others, but we all dream. Sometimes dreams or visions can help us work out our feelings or understand the situations around us. Like a dream, a vision is a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during stages of sleep. Dreams also can be a way for God to communicate with us. Using the “Dreams” handout, look up the Scripture references to learn about more dreams. Write who was dreaming and what the dream was about. We will talk about it after you have read the Scriptures.

•  T IP •

If you have a small class and not enough children for pairing up, then do the discussion as a whole group.

• Give the children the “Dreams” handout and time to complete the activity.

SAY: Now let’s see if we can understand these dreams. What did you learn about dreams in the Bible? Think about the dream you just read about. Using the play dough, create something that will explain what this dream was about. After you have created your object, find a partner in the room to share with. • Give the children time to create the dream object and then to discuss their object with a partner. Use the “Service Banner” idea in the additional activity on p. 18 to encourage the children to show that God is with them as they serve others.

SAY: We are going to play a game called God Is With Us. One person will be chosen to be “it.” “It” will go after the rest of the class and tag persons. When you are tagged, you will freeze in place. To be unfrozen, someone else must come along and say, “God is with us,” and the frozen person says, “Amen.” The person who is “it” continues until she or he has frozen three people. The last frozen person becomes the new “it” when he or she is unfrozen. • Play the game for about 5 or 10 minutes before moving on to the next activity. This would be a great time-filler activity to use in the future.

reams, dreams, dreams. Joseph has interpreted the dreams for prisoners and now has been remembered by the royal steward for his gift. Joseph interprets the King’s dream and tells him that there will be 7 years of prosperity and 7 years of famine. Joseph recommends to the king that grain be collected and saved for the seven years of prosperity so when the famine comes the people will be able to be feed. The king is pleased with the interpretation and places Joseph into the role of Prime Minister, a high-ranking official who has the job to collect the grain and prepare for the famine. This scripture story helps us to see that Joseph is being used by God to prepare the people for what is to come. Joseph, the slave, the prison, is now the prime minister, a trusted officer of the king. Joseph realizes that his position in the king’s court is special but special for the service of God as well as the people.

God is with us wherever we go.

Joseph and His Brothers Reunited

September 25 Bible Story Genesis 42:1–46:34

Anchor Point

Bible Verse The Lord was with Joseph. Genesis 39:2

Did You Know?

Y

es, this week’s lesson includes a lot of reading, but the story of Joseph continues and helps us understand the importance of the people of God being in Egypt. As you are able, read the whole story in class. It will be a great reward for your group to have the experience of hearing and knowing the story of Israel settling into Egypt. The story continues as Joseph has now prepared the Egyptian people for the famine and is ready to receive those who are hungry. Back in Canaan, Jacob and his sons are experiencing the famine and need to feed their families. At this time, Jacob’s youngest son, Benjamin, is an important part of the story. Because Benjamin is Jacob’s last son, and Jacob still grieves for Joseph, Benjamin is very special. Jacob sends his sons, except Benjamin, to purchase grain to feed the family. The story explains that Joseph recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him. He begins to take revenge on his brothers, even while providing for their families. Each time Joseph encounters his brothers, he comes closer to forgiving them for their actions. As you explore the story today, keep track of all of the people and the relationships in the story. Use the map and Joseph’s lifeline from Class Stuff to help your children understand Joseph’s travels.

THE RE U N I O N Supplies: Bibles

SAY: Our Bible story today is in Genesis, chapter 42:1—46:34. Let’s take turns reading the story aloud. ASK: How did you feel hearing this part of the story of Joseph? How do you think Joseph felt when he saw his brothers? I wonder what his brothers were thinking when they realized the governor was Joseph. I wonder how Jacob felt when he saw his son, Joseph, again. I wonder how God was working in this story.

•  T IP  •

This is a long reading today. If you want to try a little different way of reading, have the children act out the different parts as they are read aloud.

Grow Stronger MA P Supplies: Class Stuff—pp. 15 & 18

Hang the “Map” (pp. 15 & 18) in the room.

SAY: Let’s look at our map of ancient times. Point out Egypt, where Joseph was providing food for all who were affected by the famine. Let’s find the new land of Goshen, where Jacob and Joseph’s brothers and their families all settled.

LI FE L I N E O F J OS EPH Supplies: Class Stuff—p. 10, marker

Hang the “Lifeline of Joseph” (p. 10) in the room.

SAY: Let’s add to the lifeline of Joseph for this week. What has happened to Joseph, and where does his family live by the end of the story?

BIRD FEEDER Supplies: one orange per child, knife, spoons, scissors, twine, bird seed, zip top bags, paper towels, paper plates

repare the oranges by cutting them in half, and have paper towels to cover P where each child will work.

SAY: Joseph’s role as a governor was to provide food for those who were hungry. He sold bags of grain to the people of Egypt, and to the people in areas around Egypt. Today as we think about what it meant for Joseph to provide for those who were hungry, we are going to provide for the birds in our area. You each have two halves of an orange. Using the spoon, scoop out the inside of the orange, leaving the rind intact. After you have cleaned out the inside of the orange, put the pulp on the paper plate. The children can place the extra pulp in another zip top bag to carry home and place it outside for their birds in their yard. (Avoid leaving the paper plates outside.) Poke two holes in the top of the orange, and then tie two pieces of twine to each hole. Now fill the orange with bird seed. You can put your feeder in the zip top bag to take home and hang from a tree in your yard. Hang the orange near something stationary for birds to perch on while they eat. B AGS O F GR AIN Supplies: Leader’s Guide—p. 29, pillowcase, sand, measuring cup, large plastic bag or container to catch sand

Photocopy “Different Kinds of Grain” (p. 29).

AY: Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to purchase grain for their families. Each time S the brothers came to Joseph, he sent them home with bags of grain. Let’s look at our handout to see the different kinds of grain that would have been available during the time of Joseph. • Give the children time to examine “Different Kinds of Grain.”

AY: The brothers had a lot of grain to load for their families. Today we are going S to fill a pillowcase with sand to see what it would be like to load the grain and make sure all the grain traveled safely. Using the measuring cup, scoop sand and put it into the pillowcase. (Place the pillowcase in the large plastic container to catch stand that may spill.) Consider how much the “bag” weighs each time you add a cup of sand. The pillowcase helps us understand how much weight the brothers would have loaded onto their animals and wagons. Think about all of that weight the animals carried!

Different Kinds of Grains Below are the names and pictures of different kinds of grains that would have been available in Joseph’s time. Each grain has a different use.

Barley is one of the oldest grains and was first cultivated for human use. It is a member of the grass family and is grown to be food for animals and to be ground into flour for making cereal and bread. It does not store well for long periods of time.

Wheat (emmer, spelt) is a grain that is grown for making cereal and flour. One of the most widely grown in modern times, wheat provides great vegetable protein and can be stored for long periods of time.

Millet is a member of the grass family that grows in dry, hot areas and has a very short growing season. Millet is not a popular grain, but it can be milled into flour as well and be used for animal food. In modern times and in the United States, millet is used mostly in bird feed.

Rye is closely related to barley and wheat. Rye is not grown widely across the world. It is grown for cereal as well as for flour and can be eaten whole, without grinding or being boiled or rolled.

Additional Bird Feeder Options 1. Tea Cup Bird Feeder: Use the directions below to create the bird seed mix. Place the mixture in an old tea cup and tie a ribbon on the handle, and hang the tea cup from a tree branch. Hang the tea cup with bird seed where the birds will find it. Make sure there is a branch or a stationary object underneath for the birds to perch on as they eat. 2. C ookie Cutter Bird Feeder: You will need bird seed, three unflavored gelatin packets, measuring cup, pan and stove or bowl and microwave for boiling water, large cookie cutters, straws cut into two-inch pieces, large bowl, spoon, baking sheet, waxed paper, kite string Directions • D issolve the three individual packets of gelatin in 2/3 cup of boiling water. (Adult help will be needed for this step.) • When the gelatin is completely dissolved, add two cups of bird seed. • S tir for 2 to 3 minutes to allow the seeds to soak up the gelatine mixture. The gelatin helps the seeds to stick together so they don’t fall out, and it tastes fine to the birds. • P lace cookie cutters onto a waxed paper-lined baking sheet, and carefully fill them with the bird seed mixture. Make sure the cookie cutters are not overfilled and the seeds are tight in the cookie cutters. • C over the filled cookie cutters with another sheet of waxed paper, and press the seeds down firmly. • G ently insert a straw segment into each cookie cutter in order to create a hole for the loop of string you will add later. • A llow the bird seed cookies to dry for 3 or 4 hours, flipping them halfway through, before gently pushing them out of the cookie cutters. Let them finish drying overnight. • A fter the seeds are dry, gently pluck out the straw. • A dd a loop of string, and hang them on tree limbs outside. Important: When hanging either of these feeder options, make sure there is a branch or a wide stationary object for birds to perch on as they eat. SESSION 5

The Baby in the Basket Bible Verse

October 2 Bible Story Exodus 1:8-14; 2:1-10

I’ll set you free with great power. Exodus 6:6

Did You Know?

T

his month we will be discussing freedom. Last month we saw how the Israelites came to be in Egypt. Now we are several generations later, with a people who have grown beyond being a large family to a people who are about to be a nation. The king of Egypt does not have a relationship with the people of Israel, nor does he like them. To show his dislike of the people, the king forces the people to become slaves and orders all boy children to be thrown into the Nile River after they are born. It is in the middle of this that Moses is born. He is born to a Levite woman, a Jewish woman. She tries for a while to keep Moses safe and a secret, but it takes only a few months for Moses to grow too big to hide. The Levite woman places Moses in a basket in the Nile River, in hopes that he will be protected. The story of Moses being saved by the pharaoh’s daughter is a story of salvation that will be important for the salvation of the Israelites from slavery. Moses begins life fully within the Israelite heritage and then is raised within the Egyptian home of the pharaoh. He sees the life around him from the views of both groups. As the story of Moses unfolds, he makes a decision about which nation he will claim. As you explore this story this week, be mindful that some children may have experienced abandonment in their lives. This story may be one that triggers conversation about what it was like for Moses to live in two different homes. Though this story is about a baby, it is also about the differing nations of Egypt and Israel.

Basket Weaving Supplies: newspapers, scissors or paper cutter, white glue, clear tape, stapler

Directions 1. Cut the folded edge off a couple sections of newspaper (about 20 pages). Then cut those pages in half lengthwise to make 40 strips. You may need more newspaper pages, depending on the newspaper size. 2. Fold the newspaper pieces in half lengthwise, then fold again lengthwise into quarters, then into eighths, so you will have some sturdy strips. The strips should be about 3/4 inch wide. 3. Start weaving from the center outward. Use white glue where needed to secure your pieces, especially on the first few strips you put together. 4. When you decide the bottom of the basket is the size you want, fold the exposed strips upward at a 90º angle to form the sides. Start weaving in horizontal strips to fill in the sides, securing the ends with staples as you go. 5. When you reach the top, fold the vertical strips over to the inside and secure them with glue or clear tape.

The Burning Bush

October 9 Bible Story Exodus 2:11–3:22

Bible Verse I’ll set you free with great power. Exodus 6:6

Anchor Point We remember God’s powerful acts.

Did You Know?

O

ur story continues. Moses has become a young man and is now very aware of the oppression of the Israelite people by the pharaoh of Egypt. After killing an Egyptian for his abuse of an Israelite, Moses soon realizes that Pharaoh wants to kill him. At this point, Moses flees Egypt to find safety in an area called Midian. In Midian, Moses meets Reuel (also called Jethro) and his family. Reuel offers Moses hospitality and a job as a shepherd, and Moses starts a new life in Midian. Moses stays there for many years, marries, and has a son. By this time, there is a new pharaoh of Egypt on the throne who is even more determined to keep the Israelites as slaves. As a shepherd, Moses has taken his sheep up on Mount Horeb to graze. Moses encounters God through a burning bush. It is here that Moses learns of God’s call to action. God instructs Moses to remove his shoes on this holy ground; this action reminds us that the presence of God is mighty. As you explore this Scripture reading with your children, be aware that this reading may trigger deep questions of social justice. Slavery is still an issue around the world and makes the news regularly. The children may struggle with how or if Moses’ violent action was right and how Moses was called by God to lead the Israelite people to freedom.

Additional Activity Story Time As a group, we will tell the other part of the story of Moses that we did not read in today’s Bible story. We will sit in a circle. The first person will begin the story. Then, after about three sentences into the story, the next person will take over. This story does not have to be real. For example, you can tell the story of Moses as a shepherd, what he might have seen going up the mountain, what he may have said to the sheep after encountering God. This is a story. We will go around the circle until all have added to the story.

Moses and Pharaoh Bible Verse I’ll set you free with great power. Exodus 6:6

Did You Know?

T

his is a mighty story for all of us to hear. For our Scripture today, we encounter God’s power expressed in the plagues. Moses is pleading with the king of Egypt for the freedom of the Israelites to worship God. When the people are free to worship God, they will be free of the king’s powerful grip on their lives. Each time Moses asks for freedom for the people, the king reacts with more violence against the people and God reacts with greater power. Yes, this is a long reading! Please try to take the time to have your children read the full story from the Scriptures. Often, we feel that we know the whole story; but when we read the Scripture, we find new and different meanings for ourselves in the words that are read. Divide the reading into sections as much as possible for your group. God’s presence is in the Scriptures.

P

haraoh finally releases the people of Israel, and they begin their journey to freedom. There is a shorter route to freedom, but it means that they will have to fight their way through. God directs Moses to take the people the longer way to the Reed Sea so that they will not be as discouraged. Along the route, God precedes the people in a cloud column by day and a lightning column by night. Our Scripture story gives us the opportunity to see how God protects the Israelites. As you explore this story, your group may find that it is familiar, especially the part about walking on dry land in the Reed Sea. Though the story is familiar, it is helpful once again to hear the words God has for us. You may want to discuss with your group what it means to be protected by God. The questions in Dig Deeper focus on how the Israelites would have felt at that time and the amazing miracle of dividing the Reed Sea.

The CDF wants all children around the world and here in the United States to have great opportunities to grow up healthy and happy. As we light our candle this morning, we will think about how the Children’s Defense Fund is working to help children. (Light the candle.) We are still creating the prayer web. It connects all of our prayer requests together, and is an example of our knowledge that God hears our prayers and answers our prayers. As the Hebrew people left Egypt, they prayed for God to protect them and lead them to safety. God heard their prayers. Take a strip (or strips) of fabric and write your prayer request on the fabric with markers. After you have written your prayer request, then tie the fabric strip to the other prayer requests. We are making a prayer web that connects in many different places. You can tie your prayer onto any other prayer. • Give the children time to write their prayers requests, tie them to the web, and say their own prayer. Then, close the class in the prayer.

Clay Recipe for Fossils Make the clay ahead of time. Supplies: 1 cup cornstarch, 2 cups baking soda, 11⁄4 cups water, zip top bag, waxed paper, pan, large spoon, stove, cloth

Instructions 1. Combine cornstarch, baking soda and water in a pan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly. 2. When the mixture has the thickness of mashed potatoes, the dough is done. 3. Place the waxed paper on your work surface, and spread a little cornstarch on the waxed paper. 4. Remove the mixture from pan and place it on the waxed paper. 5. Place a damp cloth over the mixture and let it cool. 6. Knead the dough it is smooth and cool. The dough is ready to use. Place into a zip top bag and save for the fossils activity.

Fossils

Supplies: clay; pencils; shells, twigs, or leaves; white glue; small paintbrush Instructions 1. Give each child a piece of clay and shells, twigs, or leaves. 2. Press the shell, twig, or leaf into the clay to create an imprint like the item. Another option is to use the pencil to draw an image or shape into the clay. The deeper the image, the more time it will take to make the fossil. The imprint does not need to be deep. 3. With the paint brush, spread white glue into the shape in the clay and allow it to dry. 4. When the glue is dry, gently remove the glue from the clay and allow the clay to continue to dry. Now you have a fossil!

Songs of Joy Bible Verse I’ll set you free with great power. Exodus 6:6

Did You Know?

T

his week’s Scripture focuses on the Israelites’ celebration of freedom and songs of joy. After the Israelites arrived on the other side of the Reed Sea and the Egyptians were no longer a threat, Moses begins to sing. His song is of joy and freedom. Moses is celebrating how God has protected the people and delivered them from the Egyptian king’s persecution. Miriam joins him in the song, playing her tambourine with great joy. As you explore this Scripture this week, encourage the children to think about what it means to celebrate and rejoice. Ask the children to think of when they might celebrate important times in their lives and how they would feel. You might also want to discuss what it means to celebrate through song.

Joy of the Heart Directions for making an origami heart: 1. You need one square of paper to make an origami heart. Measure the paper at least 5 x 5 inches, until you’re confident in your folding. 2. F old your first square in half diagonally. If your paper is patterned or colored, fold it on one side; the pattern or color should face upward. Try and fold as precisely as you can, with the edges of paper matching up. This will help make better origami structures. If your folding isn’t lined up, especially in the early stages, then your finished piece might not work well. 3. U nfold the paper back into a square shape, once you’ve made your diagonal crease. With single-sided paper, the blank side should be facing upward. Rotate your paper so that the diagonal crease is facing the same way, at a slant. 4. P ick up the bottom right corner of your paper and drag it over to the top left to fold your paper diagonally in half in the other direction and make your crease. 5. U nfold your paper, and you should now see two folded creases that cross over in an X shape. Twist the paper around so that it sits like a diamond shape in front of you. This makes your folds now appear in a cross + shape. The blank side of the paper should be facing up. 6. P ull the top corner down to the middle fold line of the paper. Line the point of the corner up with the exact mid-point of the paper and make a crease. 7. P ull the bottom corner of the paper up. Position the corner right at the top middle of the paper and make a crease. 8. Take the corner on the right side and lift this side of the paper right up. Then, fold what was the bottom right edge along the middle crease line. 9. R epeat this process on the left side. Take the corner on the left side and lift this side of the paper right up and fold what was the bottom left edge along the middle crease line. You should have something that vaguely resembles a heart shape. 10. F lip the origami heart over so you can see the back of it. Take the right corner and fold it back slightly in this < direction. Then repeat on the other side by folding back the left corner slightly in this > direction. This just adds more shape to your completed heart. 11. N ow, take the top right corner and fold it down to meet the edge of the colored or patterned side of paper. Repeat this process on the left by folding that corner down to the edge of the paper as well. This helps round off the heart’s edges.

In the Wilderness Bible Verse I’ll take you as my people, and I’ll be your God. Exodus 6:7

Did You Know?

J

November 6 Bible Story Exodus 15:22–17:7

Anchor Point God cares for all people.

ourneying across the desert, the people of Israel begin to feel that they have been brought into the wilderness to die. They complain to Moses that they have no water and no food. Moses is their leader, yet Moses does not know what to do, other than to cry to God. God hears the cries and answers with water and food.

Your Lesson

This Scripture story is an amazing example of God’s power to provide. When the people thought there would be no salvation from slavery, God brought them to freedom. When the people thought they would die because of thirst and hunger, God provided water and food. God’s glory is present for the Israelites.

Carry Your Water Bottle Supplies: duct tape, parchment paper, scissors, circle punch, ruler

Directions: 1. Cut two pieces of duct tape 9 inches long. 2. Overlap the pieces a bit to make it approximately 3 inches in width. This will become the outside of the holder. 3. Repeat step #1. This will become the inside of the holder. 4. P lace a 4-inch strip of duct tape on a piece of parchment paper. 5. Use a 1 3/4-inch circle punch to punch out two circles. One will be for the inside and one will be for the outside. 6. Cut a piece of duct tape 8 inches long. Fold it in half on top of itself. 7. Cut a piece of duct tape 45 inches long. Fold it in the same manner as the previous step. It will be long and skinny for the strap. 8. Flip over the piece in the first step. Take the long strap and create an oval. 9. Take the shorter strap and place it in a U shape in between the other strap. The more evenly spaced you make these four pieces, the more balanced your water bottle will be. You will also want the U-shaped pieces placed where they cross under the water bottle to be level, to ensure the water bottle sits on both straps. 10. Take the piece from the second step and place it on top of the piece from first step to hold the straps in place. 11. P lace a water bottle inside the holder and flip it over. 12. C ross the bottom straps and place a circle to hold them in place. 13. R emove the water bottle and place the second circle on top of the first inside the holder to hold the straps in place. 14. P lace a water bottle inside the holder and close it up with an additional 3-inch piece of duct tape. This piece is able to reposition, if needed, to allow the water bottle to go in and out. Make it tight enough that it won’t fall out, but not too tight that you cannot get it out when needed.

•N ow, listen as other people are beginning to ask about supper and some water. Suddenly, everyone gets very quiet. Listen carefully. You hear the leader talking, but not talking to the group. The leader is talking to God.

• T he leader then turns and talks to the whole group. The leader tells you that food will be provided, meat at night and manna in the morning. Then, everyone begins to look up. There are quail in the sky, everywhere. Food has been provided.

• Imagine you are settled on your pallet for the night. You are almost asleep. Your eyes are heavy and droopy. You are listening to the people around you. You begin to pray to God: “Thank you for saving us. Thank you for providing a great supper. Thank you, God, for being with us.”

• Before we open our eyes, we are going to pray our closing prayer for the day.

Ten Commandments Bible Verse I’ll take you as my people, and I’ll be your God. Exodus 6:7

Did You Know?

T

oday’s Scripture is the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments still are a vital part of our faith today. They are the foundation for our obedience to God; they describe the basics of how to live a life in community. God provides the Ten Commandments for the people of Israel to give them rules for living as God’s people. Encourage your children to learn these Ten Commandments during the session. The first four commandments are about the people’s relationship with God. These are powerful rules in a time when the people were accustomed to worshipping the Egyptian gods, as well as the Almighty God. The last six commandments describe how to live in community. The people had to learn to live differently from all those around them. Still today, we are expected to live differently. Help the children understand that the Ten Commandments are relevant even today.

A House for God Bible Verse I’ll take you as my people, and I’ll be your God. Exodus 6:7

Did You Know?

T

oday’s reading focuses on the instructions for building a house for God’s presence and the actual building of the House of God. It is a VERY long reading. You are encouraged to spend some time before class reading the entire Scripture for today; but as a group, focus on the second part of the reading. This section includes specific instructions about materials, construction details, and the specific personnel to be used in the actual building of the Tabernacle or House of God. The importance of today’s reading is learning that God intends to reside with the people of Israel. Additionally, the House of God will not be a permanent structure at this point; it will be transported, because the Israelites have not yet arrived at the Promised Land. They are to remember that God will be with them.

oday is the first day of Advent. Advent is the first season of the church year and helps us explore and anticipate the birth of Jesus. The Scripture verses remind us that God promises us peace as we are in relationship with God. God promises us, as faithful people, the opportunity to experience a new life through God’s love. Exploring the meaning of Advent will be important today. Advent is the season of waiting and expectation. This is a great opportunity to create an atmosphere of expectation in your group setting. Part of waiting and expectation is not decorating for Christmas all at once, but adding different aspects of the decorations each week as your group travels closer to Christmas.

Mission Project Below is the letter that will be sent home in the Bible Stories & Stuff. Make sure you are aware of the mission project for this quarter, and encourage the class to participate in the mission offering. Dear Guardians, This quarter we will be financially supporting the Children’s Defense Fund and their program, Freedom Schools. The CDF Freedom Schools® program seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today. By providing summer and after-school reading enrichment for children who might otherwise not have access to books, the CDF Freedom Schools program plays a much needed role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps. This is a key part of CDF’s work to ensure a level playing field for all children. In partnership with local congregations, schools, colleges and universities, community organizations, and secure juvenile justice facilities, the CDF Freedom Schools program boosts students’ motivation to read, generates more positive attitudes toward learning, increases self-esteem, and connects the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. Since 1995, more than 135,000 Pre-K through 12th grade children have had a CDF Freedom School experience and more than 18,000 college students and recent graduates have been trained by the CDF to deliver this empowering model. The CDF Freedom Schools model incorporates the totality of the Children’s Defense Fund’s mission by fostering environments that support children and young adults to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference. The CDF trains site coordinators and project directors to provide supervision and administrative oversight. The program provides an exciting Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC), including carefully chosen, developmentally appropriate, and culturally relevant books. The model curriculum supports children and families around five essential components—high-quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; social action and civic engagement; intergenerational servant leadership development; and nutrition, health, and mental health. Learn more at: www. childrensdefense.org/programs/ freedomschools/ You child’s class will collect an offering for this service organization. You may send the offering with your child to class, or donate online at childrensdefense.org by clicking the “Donate” link on the left side of the Web page.

Every Step of the Way November Song—Unit 3

When the children of Israel fled from Egypt land, God was with them every step of the way. Then the going got rougher as they crossed the wilderness, but God was with them every step of the way. Wherever I go, wherever I stay, God is with me every step of the way. When the children of Israel crossed the desert sand, God was with them every step of the way. And when Moses their leader needed help to understand, God was with him every step of the way.

Then the children of Israel reached the Promised Land; God was with them every step of the way. And when the peaceable Kingdom comes to where we stand, God will be there every step of the way. Wherever I go, wherever I stay, God is with me every step of the way. All there is to know, all there is to say, God is with us every step of the way. Every day. Every step of the way.

Wherever I go, wherever I stay, God is with me every step of the way. All there is to know, all there is to say, God is with us every step of the way. Every step of the way. Every step of the way.

Let’s Go Deep Blue Remix Theme Song

Let’s go Deep Blue. Let’s go Deep Blue. Let’s go Deep Blue. Whoo! Let’s go down where the water’s fine. The Deep Blue crew are friends of mine. The Bible’s like an ocean; there’s so much to explore. Dive in with devotion. You’re gonna want more, more, more. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Everybody grab a paddle. Gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Shake it, rock and roll, and rattle. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. See everything there is to see. Start row, row, rowing. Got to get it going. Deep Blue. Deep Blue.

We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Everybody grab a paddle. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Shake it, rock and roll, and rattle. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. See everything there is to see. Start row, row, rowing. Got to get it going. Deep Blue. Deep Blue. Let’s go (Let’s go) Deep Blue. (Deep Blue.) Let’s go (Let’s go) Deep Blue. (Deep Blue.) Let’s go (Let’s go) Deep Blue. (Deep Blue.) Let’s go, go, go. Whoo! Deep Blue.

Splish, splish, splash by the sunny shore. Down, down, down to the ocean floor. (Keep on rolling.) Deep Blue. The Bible’s like an ocean (Keep on rolling.) Deep Blue. with treasure deep inside. (You got to get it going.) Deep Blue. Time for an adventure. Come on, let’s ride (ride), ride (ride), ride (ride), ride (ride), ride.

Oh, Brothers September Song—Unit 1

Oh, brothers, my brothers, hear what I say. Oh, brothers, my brothers, God meant it to be this way. Oh, brothers, my brothers, everyone knows. Oh, brothers, my brothers, this is how the story goes. This is how the story goes. We got off to a rocky start. You had a jealous heart. I was proud of the coat I wore, but you showed me to the door. I didn’t know what was to be, but God took care of me. God made the story come true. God made the story, and the story came true. Oh, brothers, my brothers, hear what I say. Oh, brothers, my brothers, God meant it to be this way. Oh, brothers, my brothers, everyone knows. Oh, brothers, my brothers, this is how the story goes. This is how the story goes.

God alone took me by the hand, led me to Egypt land. Then I landed in jail, it seems, till I explained their dreams. You didn’t recognize me since I had become a prince. All was forgiven for good. (All was forgiven for good.) The way God said, God said that it would. Oh brothers, my brothers. Oh, brothers, my brothers, hear what I say. Oh, brothers, my brothers, God meant it to be this way. Oh, brothers, my brothers, everyone knows. Oh, brothers, my brothers, this is how the story goes. Oh, brothers, my brothers, hear what I say. (Hear what I say.) Oh, brothers, my brothers, God meant it to be this way. (Oh, yes, he did.) Oh, brothers, my brothers, everyone knows. (Everyone knows.) Oh, brothers, my brothers, this is how the story goes. (That’s how it goes.) This is how the story goes. This is how the story goes.

Being Free October Song—Unit 2

Everybody gather ’round when you hear that trumpet sound. The time has come to go across the sea. Moses is a-waitin’; it’s a time for celebratin’. And you’ll see just what it feels like being free. Being free, being free. Oh, it feels so good to be free. Leave your troubles and your sorrow. Soon you’ll see a new tomorrow ’cause there’s nothing in the world like being free. (Let me hear you now. Oh, yeah.) We have waited for the day that our God would show the way, as good a God as any God can be. Now the future’s lookin’ sunny in that land of milk and honey. Once you’ve had a taste of freedom, you’ll agree.

So now let’s take a pause, a moment for the cause and those who gave their all so faithfully. Then with thankfulness and love, we give praise to God above and let freedom ring for everyone to see. Being free, oh, being free. Yes, it feels so good to be free. Leave your troubles and your sorrow. Soon you’ll see a new tomorrow, and where freedom is that’s where I want to be. ’Cause there’s nothing in the world, there’s nothing in the world like being free. Bein’ free.

Being free, being free. Oh, it feels so good to be free. Leave your troubles and your sorrow. Soon you’ll see a new tomorrow ’cause there’s nothing in the world like being free. Bein’ free.

Caleb Hello. My name is Caleb. Let me tell you about myself. I am new to the Deep Blue Kids Crew. My family just moved in to the lighthouse. My mom just remarried and my stepdad is the lighthouse keeper. This is the first time I have lived near the water. I am a city boy and like to ride my skateboard, so I still need to find a place to ride. I really like animals and love to take care of them. My pet turtle hangs out with me most of the time. He is a lot like I am. I like to cover my head when I am a little unsure about those around me. When I get to know people, my hoodie comes down, just like my turtle will stick his head out of the shell. My mom and stepdad take me to church each week, but I really am not sure about all these new people. I don’t talk much around new people because I am shy. Many people think I don’t care, because I sit on the edge of the group until I know I can trust you and really want to be part of the group. Mom says I need to work on trusting people a little more easily. I really like the lighthouse; it is fun to explore. I like going all the way to the top and looking out over the water. I have found a few new friends at the Tree House, and I’m excited to go on adventures with them.

Tools for the Teacher’s Toolbox Here are a few extra games and activities that may be useful as time-fillers. The activities may require a little more preparation, but will be different and usable with any session. File these activities into your toolbox of information for when you need an extra game or activity.

Hand to Hand Game This game is designed for all to participate. No preparation is involved, and the game should take about 10 minutes, depending on your group size. How to Play Everyone in the group stands on one foot while grabbing their other foot behind them (that foot to the rear). Then they will hop around on one foot and try to high-five one another with their remaining free hand. If a person loses his or her grip on a foot or if a foot touches the ground, he or she is out. The only other rule is that the players must high-five with the free hand. Shoulder or elbow high-fives or high-fives with other body parts are unacceptable. The last person standing is the winner!

Straw Building Make a Straw Building Supplies: straws, scissors, clear tape Give each child at least 10 straws. Tell the children they will design a structure or building by connecting the straws. You may suggest that the structure relate to the session or Bible story for that day. How to connect the straws: Make ½-inch-long snips at one end of a straw. That makes one end of the straw collapse so that end fits into an uncut straw. If you have straws with a bend function, use that for a corner of the building. Children can decide on how tall or wide the walls of the room will be. After the straws have been connected, use clear tape to secure the connection.
