Where Kids Dive Deep Into the Bible e p th s of who I a m I rejoice in Go d m y In the d L uke 1:47

s av i o r.

Welcome to Deep Blue W

e’re glad you’re here to dive deep with us into God’s Word. We’ll have adventures, hear exciting Bible stories, and learn how to live as disciples of Jesus. The Bible is more than just a big book. It’s a gift to us from God. It’s also a gift to us from many people. It took hundreds of years and thousands of people to bring us this gift. Like all good gifts, the Bible is meant to be opened, explored, and enjoyed. With Deep Blue, we’ll open our Bibles and learn more about God, Jesus, faith, and how it all fits together into life today.

Meet the Deep Blue Crew! Hi! My name is Asia , and I love to talk. Well, not just talk. Communicate. Report on what I see. Friends think I might make it on TV one day, but for now, I’m just happy to document all the great discoveries we will make in Deep Blue. Hello. I’m pleased to meet you. My name is Edgar , and I’m always trying to figure things out. Some people say I’m too curious, but I just need to understand things. One of my favorite things to do is figure out how to get somewhere and then investigate everything I find in that new place. Join me and the rest of the Deep Blue Crew on our Deep Blue adventures. My name is Kat . I LOVE adventure, and I’ll bet you do, too! We’re going to have so much fun in Deep Blue. There’s so much to discover and explore about the Bible and what the Bible has to say to us today. The most fun part is that we’ll be doing it together! Spring 2016

DB OE LG MAM 2016 s00.indd 5

In Deep Blue, children will make Bible stories, Bible people, and Bible passages a part of their lives. The children will come to know the Bible as THEIR book and find ways to let the Bible speak to them today. Deep Blue incorporates Bible stories, science activities, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a lived-faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today! The Deep Blue Kids—Asia, Edgar, and Kat—will lead the children through the Bible using animated videos that tell the story. The student resources and the Deep Blue Kids Bible are colorful and engaging, encouraging the children to “dive deeper” into the Bible and explore their faith in fun and age-appropriate ways. Deep Blue is a comprehensive Bible study for children, incorporating the pillar stories of the Old and New Testaments.

Supplies

W

herever your Sunday school group gathers—in the back of the sanctuary, a small room, the pastor’s office, the kitchen, or even a hallway— there are some basic supplies you will need to have available almost every Sunday. The ideal situation is to collect the basic supplies you think you will need and keep them accessible every Sunday.

Choose the activities you will use, and provide what will be needed for just that unit. Or, if you need to, collect supplies for one lesson at a time. You may want to make a wish list of the supplies you will need for the whole unit. Members of your church will be happy to know how they can support the children in the church.

The Basics

• Bibles • scissors • markers • crayons, colored pencils • pencils and pens • construction paper • drawing paper • tissue paper • glue and glue sticks • stapler and staples

SESSION 1

Jesus Washes Feet Bible Verse I’ve seen the Lord. John 20:18

Did You Know?

I

magine being a disciple sitting at the table with Jesus for Passover, the last meal Jesus would have before his betrayal and crucifixion. You are on the floor with your feet behind you, and you are resting your arm on the table. The table is full of delicious food for a celebration, the Passover. As the meal begins, Jesus gets up from the table and prepares to wash the disciples’ feet. This scene unfolds for the disciples, leaving them confused. The custom was that as a sign of hospitality, the host would provide a basin for foot washing as the guests arrived. Here is Jesus not only offering the hospitality, but also offering the service of actually washing the feet of the disciples. The act of washing the feet was usually one performed by a servant within the house. As Jesus knows what will be happening in the hours to come, he attempts to prepare the disciples. Yet, Peter refuses to have his feet washed initially and then asks for washing from head to toe. Jesus explains that Peter was not in need of bathing, but of having his feet washed. This week, help your group understand the meaning of hospitality and service to each other. Jesus expressed both in these few verses. Older Elementary children are ready to begin living a life committed to hospitality and service, but both qualities need to be taught in concrete terms and in abstract terms. Also, remember we are still in the season of Lent. This time of repentance and focus on God is important as we journey closer to Easter.

SAY: Our Bible story today is in the Gospel of John. Let’s look up the Scripture and read the story aloud. As we do, think how you might feel if you were a disciple sitting at the table with Jesus. Our Scripture is John, chapter 13, verses 1 to 17. ASK: I wonder what the disciples thought when Jesus stood up from the table and began to prepare to wash their feet? Do you think they were surprised? How would you have felt if you were sitting at that table? Do you know how the people sat for meals in the days of Jesus? (They were on the floor with their feet behind them, leaning on one arm, eating with one hand.) Would you like to eat your meals on the floor like this? • Hand out “Sitting at the Table” (p. 11) and let the children demonstrate how this position would work when they have a meal.

SAY: Jesus also showed us radical hospitality. Hospitality is “generously welcoming a guest, a friend, or a stranger.” The disciples were guests of Jesus that night. ASK: How do you think they felt being Jesus’ guests? How can we welcome guests into our Sunday school, home, or school classroom?

Grow Stronger Walkin g o n Paper cups Supplies: 13 small paper water cups per child

SAY: In Jesus’ example of radical hospitality, he was also teaching us to work together. When one person is completely in charge of everything, he or she may not be able to show hospitality to everyone; but when we work together and share the effort of being hospitable, we can help everyone be welcomed. As an activity to show us how to work together, we are going to walk on paper cups. • Set out one cup per child, and let them try to stand on it without crushing the cup. • Now set out twelve cups in two rows of six, side by side and close together. See if the children can stand on the cups without crushing them all at one time.

To wels f o r Handwashing Supplies: hand towels, fabric paints

Prepare the hand towels and paints to be used by the children.

SAY: Jesus showed his disciples how to serve by washing their feet. Washing feet was the responsibility of a servant in the house. Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist to dry the feet after using the water in the basin to wash the feet. In washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus not only showed us how to serve each other, but he taught us about hospitality. Hospitality means to welcome guests genuinely, as Jesus would. We can show hospitality at home or at church or even at school.

SAY: Today we will be doing a foot washing / hand washing service in our worship time. As a reminder of how Jesus taught us to serve each other, we will be decorating a towel. We will not be using this towel to dry our feet/hands today. • Provide the students with the towels and paints.

SAY: You can decorate the towel however you wish. You might consider using the Bible verse for the month or the Anchor Point for the month. • Let the students decorate their towels. • Allow the towels to dry to send home with the students.

Worship

• T IP  •

Prayer a n d praise Supplies: Bible; Class Stuff—pp. 7 & 26, pp. 11 & 22; Leader’s Guide—p. 12; Bible Stories & Stuff—Songbook; CD-ROM; CD player; worship table; fabric to cover table; candle; cross; basin; towel; pitcher with water

repare the worship center for the quarter by covering the table with the cloth, P adding the Bible, cross, and candle. Each Sunday you may want to add an item that reflects the Scripture focus for the day. • Hang the “March Lenten Poster” and “Stations of the Cross” (Class Stuff—pp. 7 & 26, 11 & 22). • Photocopy the “Foot Washing / Hand Washing Service” (Leader’s Guide—p. 12). • Invite the children to gather around the worship center while playing this month’s song, “The Week That Changed the World” (CD-ROM). Using the Songbooks, encourage the children to sing along. Light the candle as you begin worship.

SAY: We are in the season on Lent, so we have our Lenten poster up to remind us of the church season and to remind us to focus on how we serve God each day. Let’s light our candle and remember the life and teachings of Jesus. (Light the candle.) Now let’s focus on how Jesus served his disciples through foot washing. We will wash each other’s feet or hands to remember that Jesus served and taught his disciples and wants us to do the same. Use a towel to dry your feet or hands. • Provide a copy of the “Foot Washing / Hand Washing Service” for each child.

Worship is an important time as a class. Make sure your worship table is ready before the children arrive, or plan to have them assist in setting it up. Remember candles help children to experience the space as sacred. Lighting and extinguishing the candles can be class rituals.

.

.

SAY: Take home your Bible Stories & Stuff. There are activities for you to dig deeper into today’s Scripture. • Give each student a copy of Bible Stories & Stuff—Session 1.

Leader:

Children:

The grace of Jesus be with you. And also with you.

Have another child wash the feet of the child seated in the chair and dry the feet with a towel; then the children change places and repeat. Continue until everyone has had the opportunity to have her or his feet washed. If you choose to wash hands, set the basin on the worship table, and have a child stand beside the basin while another child washes his or her hands and then dries them with the towel. Jesus Celebrates Passover Bible Verse

March 13 Bible Story Luke 22:7-20

I’ve seen the Lord. John 20:18

Did You Know?

W

Anchor Point Jesus is alive!

e are nearing the end of the Lenten season. Today’s Scripture focuses on the story of the Passover, the Jewish meal representing the escape from Egypt by the Hebrew people. Jesus hosted this Passover meal with his disciples and others in attendance as his guests. Jesus instructed Peter and John to go into the town and prepare the meal and the room for the Passover. The Passover meal, called the Seder, traditionally has a Seder Plate, a leg of lamb, unleavened bread, and four glasses of wine. The Seder Plate is “a symbolic plate with food representing different aspects of the story of the Hebrew people and their relationship with God.” You may want to do an Internet search for the Seder and share with your group about the meal.

Your Lesson

For Jesus, this Passover meal was the last meal he would share with his disciples. He wanted to make sure they understood his love. So as the meal began, Jesus took bread from the table, blessed it, and shared it with his disciples. At the end of the meal, Jesus took the last cup of wine, blessed it, and shared it with his disciples. With these acts, Jesus provided for us the understanding of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Jesus left us a way to participate in his love and to remember his sacrifice of his life for us.

q Dive Deeper Jesus Celebrates Passover

As you explore this Scripture with your group, keep in mind this was the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples. Even as Jesus faced his own death, he was still teaching his disciples. He was teaching about his love for them and their need for a relationship with God. Share with your group about Jesus’ love for all of us.

J es u s Celebrat es Pass over Supplies: Bibles

SAY: Our Bible story today is from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22, verses 7 to 20. Let’s read aloud around our circle. ASK: How do you think the disciples felt preparing for the Passover on this particular day? How do you think they felt when Jesus broke the bread and told them to eat the bread to remember him? How do you feel when you have the opportunity to take Communion? SAY: Passover was a time of celebration for the Jewish people. This meal helped them remember when they had escaped from slavery in Egypt into the wilderness with Moses. In the Passover meal, they ate special food to help retell the story of being slaves and then being free. Today we take Communion as a way to help us know how much Jesus loves us and has sacrificed for us. It is in this time of Lent that we work to be closer to God and remember how much we are loved by God.

Grow Stronger Sy mb o l H u n t Supplies: camera

SAY: We are going on a symbol hunt. This means we are going to take a walk through the church building to see what symbols we can find that remind us of Communion, the Passover, and Jesus. As we find the different symbols in the church, we will take pictures of them. This will help us remember the symbol and where the symbols are in the church building.

• T IP  •

You may want to find all the symbols ahead of time so you know where to take your group on the hunt.

• Take the children on a walk through the church, looking for the different symbols. When you find a symbol, take a picture of it. After finding all the different symbols you can, return to your room. • Items to search for: cross, chalice, bread plate, grapes, table, bread, and wheat. • During the week, print the pictures and make a poster or bulletin board with the different symbols to display in your room.

SESSION 3

Jesus Enters Jerusalem Bible Verse I’ve seen the Lord. John 20:18

Did You Know?

P

alm Sunday. The day we explore Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem. A day of celebration and sadness.

Jesus sent two of his disciples into Jerusalem to retrieve a colt, a young donkey, for his entry into Jerusalem. When the disciples returned with the colt, Jesus sat on the colt, and the procession into Jerusalem began with Jesus and the disciples. The disciples placed their cloaks along the road while rejoicing. The Pharisees, witnessing all of this, began to rebuke Jesus and told him to make his disciples stop. For us today, we need to remember that the roads were dirt and sand. Placing clothes down on the road would have been a sign of respect for a king. The disciples recognized Jesus as a king, but not necessarily the kind they were looking for—a king that would conquer the Roman Empire and free the Hebrew people from Rome’s rule. When exploring the Scripture with your group today, share the expectation and joy of the disciples. They were expecting a triumph of great proportion from Jesus. In the end, that is what they received, but it was not the way they expected. For more Bible background information, go to DeepBlueKids.com.

SAY: Our Bible story is in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 19, verses 28 to 40. Let’s read together this story of Jesus. ASK: How do you think the disciples felt as they entered into Jerusalem with Jesus? What do you think Jesus meant when he said the stones would shout? Do you know what today is and why it is important? SAY: Today is Palm Sunday, and it is the beginning of Holy Week, the week of Jesus’ crucifixion. Palm Sunday is the day we remember Jesus’ last entry into Jerusalem. After Palm Sunday, we experience Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Maundy Thursday is the day we remember Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and his final acts of service in the foot washing. On Good Friday, we remember his crucifixion. Both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are very sad days in the life of the church because we remember the pain Jesus felt. Many people use the Stations of the Cross to help them focus on Jesus during Holy Week. Our poster of the Stations of the Cross is here for us to think about what Jesus experienced for us.

• Invite the children to gather around the worship center while playing today’s special song, “Don’t Hold Back” (CD-ROM). Hand out copies of the song, and encourage the children to sing along.

SAY: As we light our candle for worship, we remember that today is Palm Sunday and that on this day Jesus entered into Jerusalem one last time. (Light the candle.) SAY: After the Passover meal with the disciples, Jesus went to a garden to pray. It was in this garden that Judas betrayed Jesus by telling the Pharisees and the chief priests where to find him. Jesus was arrested and then taken to Pilate’s court for sentencing. Jesus was sentenced to die on a cross as punishment for saying he was the king of the Jews. Jesus was hung on a cross at a place called Skull Place, also called Golgotha. Jesus died on the cross and was taken and placed in a tomb.

.

SAY: Traditionally, Christians would experience the last week of the life of Jesus with the stations of the cross. The stations of the cross represent all the steps of Jesus from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. Since today is Palm Sunday, let’s retell the story of Jesus’ last days by looking at the “Stations of the Cross” poster and talking about each picture. • Show the “Stations of the Cross” poster to the class and talk about each picture.

SAY: We are going to worship with a litany. I will say a line and you will say “amen” afterward each line. Leader: My God, my God, why have you left me? Response: Amen. Leader: My body and my blood will be the new covenant of God’s love. Response: Amen. Leader: God’s law will be in their hearts and minds. Response: Amen. Leader: Amen. Response: Amen. PRAY: May Jesus, who for our sake became obedient unto death, even death on a cross, keep you and strengthen you, now and forever. Amen. SAY: Part of Christian tradition is to remove the worship cloths and to cover the cross. Let’s fold the worship table cloth and cover the cross in a piece of black fabric. Don’t Hold Back The day that Jesus came to town, excitement filled the air. The people gathered when they heard the King of kings was there. The disciples shouted out his name. The Pharisees said he’s to blame. But Jesus said that if they didn’t shout, you’d hear the rocks and stones crying out. Don’t hold back. Let it go. Don’t hold back. Let it show. Lift your voices to the ceiling. Let them know how you are feeling. Shout out loud. Let it fly. Don’t hold back. Don’t ask why or even the rocks will cry.

Don’t hold back. Let it go. Don’t hold back. Let it show. Lift your voices to the ceiling. Let them know how you are feeling. Shout out loud. Let it fly. Don’t hold back. Don’t ask why or even the rocks will cry. Oh, blessed is the one, blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Don’t hold back. Let it go. Don’t hold back. Let it show. Lift your voices to the ceiling. Let them know how you are feeling. Shout out loud. Let it fly. Don’t hold back. Don’t ask why or even the rocks will cry.

Jesus rode in on a colt as humble as can be. People laid their cloaks before the Christ for him to see. Yes, even the rocks will cry. Oh, don’t hold They waved their branches in the air. back! Just let it go. Palms were floating everywhere. They knew he was the one they’d waited for, and praised him even louder than before.

Jesus Lives Bible Verse I’ve seen the Lord. John 20:18

Did You Know?

C

hrist our Lord is risen today! Hallelujah!!

Our Scripture for today begins with Mary Magdalene going to the tomb and discovering that the stone has been moved and that Jesus is not there. After Mary informs the other disciples that Jesus is not in the tomb, Peter and the other disciple run to check out the situation. Once they see that Jesus is not in the tomb, the two disciples return to the place where they were staying. Mary is left in the garden alone, where she has an encounter with Christ. In Mary’s encounter with Christ, he tells her not to hold on to him, for he has not ascended to his father. As Christians, today is the greatest of all days. We celebrate the risen Christ and his triumph over death. We are each given the opportunity to have an encounter with the living Christ. For Older Elementary children, understanding the Resurrection may be difficult; yet, they may truly understand the mystery of the Resurrection and Christ. This is a day of celebration and joy. A day for us to reflect upon the greatness of Christ our Lord. For more Bible background information, go to DeepBlueKids.com.

The Road to Emmaus Bible Verse Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe. John 20:29

Did You Know?

H

appy Easter! We are still in the season of Easter and will be until Pentecost Sunday. Today our Scripture explores Jesus’ appearance to two disciples traveling to the town of Emmaus. We are really not sure where Emmaus is located; our Scripture story says it is seven miles from Jerusalem, but today’s maps show it much farther away from Jerusalem. The two disciples left Jerusalem after Mary discovered the tomb empty. These two were returning home after an eventful time in Jerusalem and were grieving the crucifixion of Jesus. Along the way a stranger joined them for the journey. The stranger gave the impression that he knew nothing about the events in Jerusalem; yet, when the disciples told him about the events, he began to explain the relevance of the events according to Scripture. As we have seen before, hospitality is important. When the three arrived at Emmaus, the stranger (Jesus) appeared to be going on beyond the town. The disciples invited him to stay at their home and to join in the meal. When they were seated at the table, Jesus took the bread, as he had done on the night of the Passover, blessed it, and then passed it to them. In that moment, the disciples realized that the stranger was actually Jesus; then Jesus disappeared! The disciples ran all the way back to Jerusalem to share their story with the other disciples. As you gather your group today, it is important to remember that Older Elementary children are beginning to claim their faith for themselves. This is an important time for them to hear the story of Christ’s journey with the disciples after his resurrection.

ASK: How do you think the disciples felt as they were walking along the road headed to Emmaus? Do you think they understood what the stranger was telling them? How would you have felt if you had been walking along that road toward Emmaus? I wonder what the disciples were thinking as they returned to Jerusalem after realizing that Jesus was the one walking with them? SAY: If you had been on that road to Emmaus, what would it have been like? In groups of three, you will have a few minutes to create a short skit of what you would have done. Once you have gotten your skit together, you will perform it for the whole group. • Give the children time to develop a skit and then have them all perform for the group.

Grow Stronger Fi ng er L abyr int h Supplies: Leader’s Guide—p. 35, clay, pencils

Photocopy the “Finger Labyrinth” (p. 35) for each child. • Give each child a piece of clay, and ask him or her to flatten it out. Use the labyrinth template to draw a labyrinth into the clay. Have the children trace the lines with their fingers to create their own finger labyrinth.

SAY: A labyrinth is “a spiritual path that enables the participant to focus on God.” Like the disciples traveling on the road to Emmaus, when you use a labyrinth, you will be able to feel the path, leave all your other thoughts alone, and focus on God. Once you have made the labyrinth, instead of walking the path, you will use your finger to feel the path. A labyrinth looks a lot like a maze. The difference is that a labyrinth has one way into the center and the same way out of the center. With a maze the idea is to trick you. A labyrinth does not trick you.

La nt ern Supplies: Leader’s Guide—p. 36, colored paper, scissors, tape, string

Photocopy the “Lantern Pattern” (p. 36).

SAY: When the disciples realized that Jesus was the stranger, they immediately returned to Jerusalem. They traveled from Emmaus to Jerusalem at night, so they needed a lantern to show them the way. We are making a lantern today. • Invite each child to cut out the lantern pattern and use as a template for 10 pieces on the colored paper. Cut out and assemble, using the diagram on page 36.

SAY: The disciples traveled the road to Emmaus twice in that one day. It was a rough road. We are going to draw on sandpaper today, as we think about how difficult that trip was for the disciples. You each will get a piece of sandpaper. Using the crayons, bear down very hard but not hard enough to break the crayons. You will need to put a lot of color on the sandpaper to see it and feel it. Draw what you think the disciples would have seen along the road to Emmaus.

Lantern Pattern Directions for a 10-sided paper lantern. Use two different colors for lantern, alternating with each color.

1. Cut patterns from at least two different colors of card stock and bend along the dotted lines. Prepare 10 lantern pieces for each student.

2. Place the first color lantern piece on the table and then a second colored piece on top of it, rotating approximately 36 degrees counterclockwise. See how the hooks overlap.

3. Add another first color piece, rotated approximately 36 degrees counterclockwise from the next second colored piece. Continue alternating pieces until all ten are in a star formation. Don’t worry about being exact about the angles; the model will self-correct when assembled.

4. Now all 10 pieces should be connected. Once you have this, flip the model over, and pull and curve up a first color piece so that the top is about 3½ inches above the intersection.

5. Pull and curve up the second colored piece to the left over the first piece. Hook the ends. Continue around the model until you have hooked all ten pieces.

6. When you release it, the lantern will compress at the center and even out the angles. Tape the ends together if needed.

Thomas Believes Bible Verse Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe. John 20:29

Did You Know?

D

April 10 Bible Story John 20:24-31

Anchor Point I believe in Jesus.

oubting Thomas is well known in the story of Jesus after the Resurrection. When the other disciples explained that they had seen Jesus, Thomas expressed that he wanted to be able to put his fingers in the holes in Jesus’ hands. When Jesus appeared to the disciples again, Thomas was present. Jesus offered to let Thomas put his fingers in the holes in his hands. At that point, Thomas believed in the Resurrection and Jesus.

Your Lesson

Thomas’ reaction to hearing that Jesus was resurrected and had appeared to the disciples was very much like the reaction of many of us, including Older Elementary children. After Thomas saw the glory of God revealed in Jesus, Jesus asked if he believed because of what he saw?

q Dive Deeper Deep Blue Bible Adventure

Thomas was not doubting that Jesus was resurrected, but he was in need of visual affirmation of his faith. Jesus provided for Thomas what he needed to strengthen his faith. For Older Elementary children, visual affirmation can be important. They are learning to trust their faith and develop their own understanding of how faith fits into their lives. They may be looking for concrete answers that can lead to more abstract understandings. With this in mind, continue to discuss the story of Thomas with an openness to what it means to have the affirmations and what it means to believe without the visual affirmations. SAY: Our Scripture story today comes from the Gospel of John, chapter 20, verses 24 to 31. Let’s read together around the group. ASK: This is a very different story. How do you think Thomas felt when he heard about Jesus and had not seen him like all the other disciples? How would you have felt? Do you think Thomas was ready to see Jesus when he did? Do you think it is easy to believe without seeing? Is it easier to believe after seeing? What does this mean for your belief?

SAY: The disciples were very blessed to have been with Jesus and to share with others about Jesus. We all have many blessings. These blessings may be that we have our family, or that we are able to go to school, or that we have a pet. We are going to make blessings jars. You will be given a jar to decorate, then paper to write the different ways you are blessed. When you take the blessings jars home, you will be able to pull out a blessing on a bad day, or you can add blessings when you think of them. So let’s work on our blessings jars. • Provide the jars and the paints for the group, and let them paint their jars. • Invite the children to gather around the worship center while playing this month’s song, “When You Believe” (CD-ROM). Using the Songbook, encourage the children to sing along.

SAY: As we close in worship, let’s think about what it means to believe without seeing. God asks us to believe that Jesus is resurrected from the dead, but today we are not able to see Jesus’ wounds from his crucifixion. We have to believe without seeing. Let’s light our candle to remember that Jesus is alive and that we are to believe without seeing. (Light the candle.)

.

ASK: This month as we learn about faith, we are also going to learn the Apostles’ Creed. A creed is “a statement of belief.” The Apostles’ Creed is an ancient statement of belief developed by the early Christians in the fourth century. You may already know the Apostles’ Creed, or you may not. I will say a line, and you repeat after me. SAY: Each Sunday this month, we will say the Apostles’ Creed together before we have our closing prayer. Remember, the Apostles’ Creed is a way for us to tell the world what we believe as Christians. SAY: Before we close in prayer, let’s remember our mission focus is Heifer International. Keep this organization and the people they serve in your prayers this week. PRAY: Almighty God, you have asked us to believe even when we can’t see to believe. Give us the wisdom to believe. You have heard our concerns; we ask for your blessings and care for each concern. The Great Commission Bible Verse

Bible Story Matthew 28:16-20

Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe. John 20:29

Did You Know?

B

April 17

efore his ascension, Jesus was with his disciples one last time. The disciples were instructed to go and make disciples of all nations.

At this point, Jesus claims all authority that is given to him. Through this authority Jesus gives instructions to the disciples. Most interestingly, Jesus commands his disciples to make disciples of ALL the nations. This was a radical thought; the disciples would be seeking to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all people, no matter their nation of origin, their race, their faith background, or their cultural background. This meant that Jesus’ disciples were to share the good news with more than the Jewish people. Additionally, the disciples were given instructions to baptize and teach the people. These instructions were important, powerful, and big. The disciples had a lot ahead of them. Older Elementary children are seeking to understand what this command means for their lives. They may even ask questions about what it means for them to teach or to make disciples. This is an opportunity to discuss discipleship, what it means and how to participate. You may even want to focus on what these children are doing to learn the Word of God. For more Bible background information, go to DeepBlueKids.com.

Exploration Points • We are told by Jesus to make disciples. • We, too, can help make disciples.

Believers Share Bible Verse

April 24 Bible Story Acts 4:32-37

Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe. John 20:29

Did You Know?

T

he disciples set out to make disciples of all the world, to baptize and to teach. Faith communities were formed as a result of the efforts of the disciples; communities shared everything, such as food, money, and other resources. In sharing the resources, there were no needy people among the community; the community shared all goods. Why would a community be formed and why share everything including land, money, food, and other resources? The dictionary defines community as “a group of people in an area who live together, who share the same or similar values and responsibilities.” Communities of followers of Jesus shared the expectation that Jesus would return immediately, and in Christ’s return the people would have no need for all the earthly belongings. This expectation meant that living in community and sharing all they had was a good experience. Also, as followers of Jesus Christ, the community was able to be a witness to non-believers and spread the good news. Older Elementary children may have experienced community in a variety of ways, both good and bad. Consider your own understanding of community and your experiences. Discussing the meaning of community and what could be the benefits of community might be very important for your time with the group today. Consider your group as a community of followers of Christ. C o o perat i ve Draw ing Supplies: mural paper, markers, basket, blank paper

SAY: The believers shared what they had with each other, from food to money to land. Sharing is an important part of being a believer. We, as Christians, need to remember that God shared with us his love, and we, too, are to share with others God’s love, our love, and what we have. We are going to do a cooperative drawing. This means that our drawing will be done as a group, sharing our ideas and sharing what we have. Here is how it will work. We have a piece of mural paper with markers. I have pieces of paper with your names in my basket. I will pull a name out of the basket and call it out. That person will have twenty seconds to draw on the mural paper. When I call the next name, the person drawing stops and the next person will also have twenty seconds to draw, but she or he has to start where the last person left off. We are going to be drawing something that we can share with others in our community. No one is to say anything while we are drawing, but we are to work together to make the drawing.

Using the Songbook, encourage the children to sing along.

SAY: The early Christians shared all their belongings with each other. They shared their land, their money, and their food. Everyone was included in the community and taken care of. We light our candle for worship today as we think about what it means to share everything you have, like your games, your books, your supper, and even your allowance. Sharing is easy and hard at the same time, isn’t it? (Light the candle.) Remember we are still in the church season of Easter. We are still focused on the Resurrection and all that Jesus and the disciples did after the Resurrection. Our Easter poster is still up to keep us focused.

Remember the mission project for this month (Class Stuff—pp. 15 & 18).

SAY: We have a litany that we will share together as part of our worship. Who would like to read the leader part? Remember, a litany is “a part of worship where we read responsively.” After our litany, we will say the Apostles’ Creed together. ASK: Are there prayer concerns before our closing prayer? Today is the last Sunday for our mission. Let’s keep the people who will benefit from this mission project in our prayers all this week. PRAY: Lord, God, thank you for sharing so much with us so we can share with others. We know you love us and that Jesus died on the cross for us. Thank you, God. Amen. SAY: Take home your Bible Stories & Stuff. There are activities for you to dig deeper into today’s Scripture. • Give each child a copy of Bible Stories & Stuff—Session 8.

Choosing the Seven Bible Verse

May 1 Bible Story Acts 6:1-7

They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. Acts 2:47

Did You Know?

A

s the communities of followers of Jesus grew, so did the issues of caring for each other. In today’s Scripture we explore how two groups of believers were struggling to make sure all were cared for, especially the widows. Both the Greekspeaking and the Aramaic-speaking believers realized that the hospitality of caring for the widows was lacking. All the disciples gathered together to discuss this issue. The solution was to choose seven disciples from among the larger groups to oversee the care of the widows and all the others.

Anchor Point I can help spread the good news.

Your Lesson q Jump In! Seven Serve and Serving the Widows q Jump In! The Bible Verse

The number 7 was important for the disciples and the faith community. As most of the disciples were Hebrew Jews, the number 7 represented the number of priests who were chosen to oversee the synagogue or local congregation of Jewish people.

q Dive Deeper Deep Blue Bible Adventure

In the reading you will see that the seven had to have three vital attributes. This meant that selecting the seven was to be intentional, not just picking seven volunteers from a crowd. The seven chosen would represent a diverse leadership and would be responsible for caring for the widows and others.

q Dive Deeper Choosing the Seven

As you explore today’s Scripture with your Older Elementary group, keep in mind that Jesus taught radical hospitality, and his disciples lived it out in their communities of faith. Children this age will be able to connect with radical hospitality and with the understanding of serving each other.

SAY: Our Bible story today is from Acts, chapter 6, verses 1 to 7. As we read the story, let’s pantomime it. We need disciples from both sides, apostles, and the seven disciples chosen. Now let’s read together. ASK: How do you think the disciples felt when they realized that the widows were not being fed? How did you feel hearing the story? What do you think about the qualities of the seven to be chosen? Would you have been chosen? What do you think you could do to be one of those chosen seven?

You can stay within the circle or draw outside the circle and connect to the circle. This is a time for you to be creative and to spend time with God. Remember that the disciples were leaders, and they spent personal time in prayer to hear and know how God wanted them to lead. We will discuss our prayer after you finish. ASK: How did it feel to pray this way? Do you feel that you were listening to God? Would anyone like to share her or his prayer with the class? You don’t have to, but if you would like to share, that would be great.

SAY: In The United Methodist Church, we have ordained ministers called deacons. These are people whom the church sets aside to be a minister for service, meaning that they help us see the widows and others in our midst who need to be fed. Our deacons are very much like the seven who were selected to care for the widows and others in the community of believers. The deacons are ordained, which means that the church says this is a very important role. We have a deacon visiting with us today. Let’s listen as she (he) tells us about the deacon’s role in the church

• T IP  • If you cannot connect with a deacon, ask your pastor to visit and share information about the role of the deacon in The United Methodist Church.

So today we light our candle and think about what we have learned. (Light the candle.) SAY: We are still in the church season of Easter, which means that we are still celebrating the resurrection of Christ. As we worship together today, let’s think about our circle prayers and the seven who were chosen to care for the widows. We need to remember we are all called to care for each other. God loves us, so we in turn need to love each other. ASK: What are some ways in which we can help care for each other? Do you feel you are to be set aside to care for others? Are there some people in your community who are set aside to care for others? SAY: For the next few weeks when we get to this point in our session, I am going to give each of you two different-colored sticky notes. On one color, I want you to write something that has stuck with you today. On the other, I want you to write something you will share with others and to spread that information. We will stick these to the “What Stuck?” and “What to Spread” posters when you finish. Next week, I will ask if you were able to spread the news to others. • Give the students time to write on the two sticky notes.

A United Methodist Deacon (from www.gbhem.org) Deacons are ordained United Methodist clergy who lead the church in relating Christians to their ministries in the world through worship leadership, preaching, teaching, nurturing spiritual vitality and leading ministries of service, love, and justice. They may work primarily in congregations, or they may work primarily in settings like hospitals, social-service agencies, mission agencies, schools, counseling centers, denominational agencies, and more.

They are ordained ministers who are set aside for service. You will notice when they wear a stole, it goes across the body from the left shoulder to the right hip. This is to remind us all that Christ, too, served. The stole is shaped to resemble the towel that Jesus wrapped around his waist when he washed the feet of the disciples on that last night before his crucifixion.

Philip and the Ethiopian Bible Verse

May 8 Bible Story Acts 8:26-40

They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. Acts 2:47

Did You Know?

P

hilip was a believer in Jesus. He encountered an angel of God, who told him where to be and when. Philip met up with the Ethiopian eunuch traveling along the road that leads to Gaza. Philip did what he knew to do, explain the Scriptures to the Ethiopian. At this time a eunuch was a slave, and this particular Ethiopian eunuch served the queen. He may have been a slave, but he was also a treasury official, trusted enough to travel without the queen. Philip explained the Scriptures to the Ethiopian. Philip was divinely inspired to shed light upon the Scriptures for the eunuch. As a response to the Scriptures and to the explanation, the eunuch wanted to be baptized. He wanted to be counted among the faithful community. Philip baptized him and then disappeared. Philip was obedient to God and went where he was instructed in order to spread the good news of Jesus. Older Elementary children are able to understand what it means to learn and to be inspired. As you explore the Scripture together, keep in mind that your group can be inspired to share the good news with others as Philip did. The more we learn about the Scriptures, the more we are able to explain them to others. For more Bible background information, go to DeepBlueKids.com.

The player with the first letter of his or her first name closest to the letter A goes first; then, go around the table clockwise. The first player places one of the dominoes right-side up on the table. The second player tries to put a domino on the table that matches one side of what’s already there. Pentecost Bible Verse

May 15 Bible Story Acts 2:1-41

They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. Acts 2:47

Did You Know?

H

appy Pentecost! We celebrate Pentecost to remember the arrival of the Holy Spirit. For those who were in Jerusalem at the time of the Resurrection, Pentecost was the feast of weeks, a celebration for the Jewish people when they made a trek to Jerusalem from their homes (wherever they were). The disciples were all together in one place, not really sure what to do. Jesus had ascended into heaven forty days after the Resurrection. Ten days later, they were gathered together when the Holy Spirit arrived. Can you imagine being in a place and suddenly hearing a strong wind and seeing what appeared to be flames of fire touching each person in the room? The disciples were surprised, then they realized that the experience was from God. They were speaking in different languages, which could be understood by all who were in Jerusalem. Peter’s call for Jerusalem and all others to follow Jesus was a powerful message for the people. Older Elementary children will begin to ask questions about the Holy Spirit. It is important for them to begin to wonder about the Holy Spirit’s actions in the world. The work of the Holy Spirit affects our personal relationship with God as well as each other. The work of the Holy Spirit guides us to be disciples of Christ in all of our life. For more Bible background information, go to DeepBlueKids.com.

ASK: How does this Scripture make you feel? How do you think the disciples felt when they first experienced the Holy Spirit? What do you think you would have done if you were in Jerusalem and had seen the disciples?

Grow Stronger Go o d News Supplies: Class Stuff—pp. 5 & 28

SAY: On the day of Pentecost, the disciples all spoke of the good news of Jesus, and there were many people in Jerusalem who did not speak the same language. Amazingly, each person could understand in his or her own language. So today we are going to learn to say “good news” in a few different languages. We have a poster for Pentecost that we will leave up for several weeks to help us remember Pentecost. The poster has the words “good news” in many different languages, like on the day of Pentecost. SAY: The concept of good news in Hebrew is shemuah tovah, in Greek it is euangelion, in French it’s bonne nouvelle, and in Spanish it’s buenas nuevas. Let’s practice saying these words. On the day of Pentecost, the people heard the good news in their own languages.

SAY: You will each get a piece of paper and a pen (or pencil). You will be interviewing disciples who were present for that first Pentecost. I want you to make a list of questions to ask the disciples. You can work in teams of 2 or 3 or by yourself. You will have a few minutes to write your questions before the disciples arrive. When the disciples arrive, you will be recorded on video while you interview the disciples.

•

T IP    ncourage the children E to work together to create the questions. This also might be a great opportunity for one of the children to be your videographer. Also, make arrangements ahead of time for several disciples to visit your class. They may need time to remember the events of the day.

Folding Pentecost Card

1. If you are using mini-jumbo craft sticks, cut the one-inch size masking tape into 4-inch lengths.

2. Place two sticks together, side by side, long ways, and tape them together, covering both the sticks with the tape.

3. Turn the two sticks over so that they are diagonal to you.

4. Place another craft stick next to and below the two sticks that you taped together. Use another piece of tape to tape the bottom two sticks together.

5. Turn all three sticks over diagonally and place another stick at the bottom of the row. Tape the last two sticks together. Keep going until you have a whole row of sticks.

6. You also can cover the first and last stick in the row by placing tape over the stick and then folding it back over the stick. It is easier to write on the tape than the craft stick. The ink soaks into the sticks and blurs.

7. Paint the sticks red, leaving the tips of the craft sticks unpainted. When the acrylic paint is dry, use a black marker to write the words.

8. Use glitter glue to outline the word.

9. Glue a ribbon on the top of the row of craft sticks.

-

10. Print “Happy Pentecost” on the card and the Bible verse for today: “They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone.” Acts 2:47

First Called Christians Bible Verse They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. Acts 2:47

Did You Know?

C

hristian. For early believers in Christ, they were just a community that took care of each other. They were not called anything specific, just a community. In today’s Scripture, we see where the community was first called and claimed the name of Christian. In Antioch, we have a community that is doing great work at spreading the good news. Disciples such as Barnabas and Saul have arrived to participate in their work. The community at Antioch is called Christian. After about a year of work together, Barnabas and Saul (later called Paul) returned to Jerusalem to share with the community the work of the Antioch Christians. Up to this point, the communities had been gathered together as Jews who believed in Jesus. It is here in Antioch that we see the community grow and extend beyond the Jewish people. For Older Elementary children, the name Christian may have always been a part of who they are. Help them understand that the community of faith at this point was growing and extending beyond the Jewish people. Today’s Scripture gives us the opportunity to discuss sharing the good news of Jesus with the many different people in the world, especially those who are different from us. This means time, prayers, and resources such as our money. Giving of our resources should come as a response to God’s love and a discipline of loving God. Giving ten percent of our resources is called tithing. What do you think about giving from your resources? Part of tithing is helping the church provide for the community of faith and spreading the good news into the world. he body has many parts but is one body.

In today’s Scripture, a letter from Paul to the church at Corinth, we hear Paul speaking to the people about the importance of each person of the community. This community was struggling to understand each other’s special talents and gifts. Some people even wanted to have the gifts of others. Paul’s letter pointed to the people all being a part of the community of Christians, but they all needed to claim their own gifts.

Mission Project

Below is the letter that is included in the Bible Stories & Stuff. Make sure you are aware of the mission project for this quarter, and encourage the class to participate in the mission offering.

Dear Guardians, This quarter we will continue collecting money for Heifer International, a charity organization working to end hunger and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to struggling communities. This quarter we are featuring their Andean Llama and Alpaca Project and will offer opportunities for your children to learn about the project and the people involved and to participate. Domesticated and selectively bred for their gentle natures and fine fiber by the Incas 6,000 years ago, llamas and their smaller “cousins,” alpacas, are intelligent creatures. Llamas are sometimes called “camels of the clouds” because they are essential to indigenous people in the high plains of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. Llamas and alpacas are valuable because their two–toed feet with padded soles are kind to fragile terrain. They are sure–footed in rocky, steep places, and their thick coats protect them from harsh weather. Since they require little water and browse on twigs, moss, and brush, they are easier on the environment than other livestock. Baby llamas and alpacas run with the herd an hour after birth and double their weight in the first month. Llamas live around 15-20 years and can weigh 280-450 pounds. Alpacas can range from about 100 to 175 pounds in weight. In Bolivia, llamas are the subject of indigenous people’s songs, dances, and stories. Heifer International is helping to upgrade their stock, thus preserving their culture. Besides being hardy pack animals, llamas supply wool, hides, rope, candle fat, and manure pellets for fuel. They easily carry loads one–third their weight over long distances. With intelligence and sharp vision, llamas are excellent guards for sheep and cattle. In Peru, the organization is helping families improve the quality of their alpaca stock, with animals who produce a finer, softer yarn that brings better prices when sold. Heifer is also providing equipment and training so that the artisans’ alpaca wool handicrafts are of highly desirable quality. The rest of this month, your child’s class will collect money for this project. Consider helping your child donate to this special project with Heifer International.

Let’s Go Deep Blue Theme Song

We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Everybody grab a paddle. Gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Shake it, rock and roll, and rattle. Gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. See everything there is to see. Let’s go down where the water’s fine. The Deep Blue crew are friends of mine. Start row, row, rowing. Got to get it going. The Bible’s like an ocean; Deep Blue. there’s so much to explore. Dive in with devotion. Deep Blue. You’re gonna want more, more, more. Let’s go Deep Blue. Let’s go Deep Blue. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Let’s go Deep Blue. Everybody grab a paddle. Let’s go, go, go. Whoo! Gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Shake it, rock and roll, and rattle. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. We’re gonna go Blue, Deep Blue. Everybody grab a paddle. The Week That Changed the World March Song - Unit 1

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. It was the week of wonders, of miracles and more. Seven days of wonders we’d never seen before. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. Oh, yeah.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. Oh, yeah. Friday is Good Friday, makes-me-wanna-cry day. Jesus gave us all there was to give. Saturday brought sadness, but Sunday gave us gladness. Come and sing, “Hosanna”; Jesus lives.

It was the week of wonders down in Jerusalem. Jesus at the Temple— that’s how it all began. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. Oh, yeah.

It was the week of wonders, of miracles and more. Seven days of wonders we’d never seen before. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. Oh, yeah.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, spreading-the-good-news day, teaching at the Temple once again. Wednesday was a “spy” day. Thursday was goodbye day, and a final supper with his friends.

Seven days of wonder. It was the week that changed the world.

It was the week of wonders, of miracles and more. Seven days of wonders we’d never seen before. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It was the week that changed the world. Oh, yeah.

Seven days of wonder. It was the week that changed the world. Seven days of wonder. It was the week that changed the world.

When You Believe April Song—Unit 2

If you’re happy and you know it, there’s a reason that you show it. And anyone can see that you believe. If you know down deep inside you there is someone there to guide you, then everyone will know that you believe. When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. As natural as knowing how to give and to receive. When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. Happy are believers who don’t even have to see, yet they believe. Jesus said, “I’m here to guide you. I’ll be standing right beside you, and you don’t have to see me to believe.”

When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. As natural as knowing how to give and to receive. When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. Happy are believers who don’t even have to see, yet they believe. When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. As natural as knowing how to give and to receive. When you believe, you believe, you believe that you believe. Happy are believers who don’t even have to see, yet they believe. I believe!

Jesus said, “Just think about me, and you’ll never need to doubt me. Now go and tell the world that you believe.”

Get Out the Word May Song—Unit 3

Get out the word. Get out the word. Haven’t you tried? Haven’t you heard? Sending the news out to the world. Don’t just stand there; get out the word.

Get out the word. Get out the word. Haven’t you tried? Haven’t you heard? Sending the news out to the world. Don’t just stand there; get out the word.

We’re one body, all together. We are here to serve. We’re one body all together, sending out the word.

Get out the word. Get out the word. Haven’t you tried? Haven’t you heard? Sending the news out to the world. Don’t just stand there. Now’s the time to get out the word.

Get out the word. Get out the word. Haven’t you tried? Haven’t you heard? Sending the news out to the world. Don’t just stand there; get out the word. We’re one body of our Savior with a job to do. We’re one body of our Savior. Help us to help you.

Get out the word. Get out the word. Get out the word. Get out the word.

Speaking Without Words by Leigh Meekins Have you ever felt yourself thinking,The students do not listen to me. I repeat myself over and over again, and they still do not get the directions. So how might you speak without speaking? How might you give directions and other cues in your room without ever saying a word? Teaching is as much about what you do as what you say. In Sunday school or other studies, children tire of hearing the

voice of one person. They want to speak and be heard. Below are five ways you, as a leader, can provide direction and leadership in your room while limiting how much you speak. The less you actually say, the more the children will listen when you do speak. 1. Teach children hand signals for oftenrepeated directions. Sign language or hand signals will help them understand without the leader having to give verbal directions. Use the sign for yes, no,

or wait for standard questions asked. This might even be a helpful cue for behaviors as well. An example might be one hand up to indicate “wait” or the sign-language for “yes.” 2. Provide tones or bells to indicate different aspects of the session. For example, use the lighting of the candles for worship, or a bell to indicate that it is time to begin wrapping up an activity. This provides the children with a different sound or cue that will enable them to be leaders. The more unique the ritual, or sound, the more likely the students will respond. 3. Many times questions that are posed for children require them to think and consider the answer. Give your group the time to think . . . don’t take this away from them. Practice active listening. When you think you have given them enough time, allow a few more seconds for them to think. Great results come from the children figuring out answers. 4. When asking questions, pose openended questions. If the children appear to be confused by directions, ask them to put the directions in their own words so you know what they did not understand. Repetition is good on occasion, but only if you don’t repeat yourself too often. Allow the children to work with each other and in groups. The more they speak, the more they will hear you when you speak. 5. Invite the children to lead in prayer or offer time for quiet, individual prayer. The more opportunities for prayer they have, the more intentional their prayers become.

Curriculum Flow When we begin a new curriculum, we should have expectations for what will be covered. This is often laid out in the scope and sequence of the curriculum, which is a schedule of what will be covered and when it will be covered. In Deep Blue curriculum, the scope and sequence can be found at DeepBlueKids.com. The website offers the full list of what will be covered and when for each year. Understanding the scope and sequence involves knowing why particular Scriptures are used. Deep Blue curriculum follows the church year. This means that you will study the stories of preparing for Christ during Advent, you will experience the birth of Jesus during

Christmas, and you will encounter Lent and Easter at the appropriate time. After Pentecost, the Scriptures for Deep Blue begin to confront the Old Testament stories of God’s actions in the lives of God’s people and New Testament stories of being Christian. The scope and sequence is designed to explore the stories that help us grow in our Christian walk. The Deep Blue curriculum scope and sequence is a threeyear cycle. Over the three years, the children will have experiences with a majority of the great stories of our faith. Encouraging the children to participate regularly will help them to learn the stories and the truths that we gain from the Scripture.
