DUI/DWI Attorneys is a third-party attorney rating organization that publishes an annual list of the top ten DUI attorneys in each state. Attorneys who are selected to the “10 Best” list must pass AIDUIA’s rigorous Irby selection process based on client and/or peer nominations, thorough research, and AIDUIA’s independent evaluation. AIDUIA’s annual list was created to be used as a resource for clients during the attorney selection process. One of the most significant aspects of the selection process involves attorneys’ relationships and reputation among his or her clients. As clients should be an attorney’s top priority, AIDUIA places the utmost emphasis on selecting lawyers who have achieved significant success in the field of DUI/DWI law without sacrificing the service and support they provide. Therefore, selection criteria focus on attorneys who demonstrate the highest standards of Client Satisfaction. We are honored to have James Irby as a 2016 AIDUIA Member. You can contact Irby at 256-766-7778 or at jamesirby.com.

of Florence was honored as a fourth-year scholarship recipient. Bank Independent President Macke Mauldin congratulated the students on their achievements. He explained that his father, the late Edward F. Mauldin, never graduated from college. However, he was a lifelong learner who deeply appreciated the value of the college experience. According to Mauldin, his father believed that any exposure to college was better than
none at all. “My challenge to our recipients today is to pay it forward,” said Mauldin. “Remember what we and others have done for you and pass that kindness along to others.” UnA President dr. Ken Kitts congratulated the students on their accomplishments and thanked the Mauldin family and Bank Independent. “What does it mean to be a premier southern university?” Kitts asked. “you have to have great friends, supporters, employees, and students like those in attendance today.”

UnA boasted the league’s top scoring offense and top scoring defense outscored their GSC opponents by an average score of 43-11. Wallace was previously
selected GSC Coach of the year in 1993, 1994, and 1995 during his first stint as head coach of the Lions. It marks the tenth time that a north Alabama head football coach has been GSC Coach of the year with Wallace’s four, three for Wayne Grubb, two for Mark Hudspeth, and one for Terry Bowden. With seven total Gulf South Conference titles and 149 wins as a head coach in the league, Wallace is at the top of both lists in GSC history.

rom time to time I have discussed Thomas how lawyers are McCutcheon paid, either through an hourly basis or Ask the Attorney on a contingency is sponsored by fee contract which local attorneys, is what we do and McCutcheon & is appropriate in Hamner, PC, as personal injury cases a service to the where the lawyer residents of NW risks his time and Alabama. money in exchange for the privilege of representing injured people for a percentage of the recovery. One of my favorite lawyer jokes is where a lady asks a lawyer, “How much do you charge? The lawyer said, “$50 for three questions.” The lady replied, “Isn’t that a lot?” The lawyer said, “Yes it is; what’s your last question?” So, what does your lawyer owe you? The first thing is an absolute duty of confidentiality. There is certainly an obligation to know or research the area of the law that the client is concerned with. Lawyers have to work hard to understand all of the aspects of a case, including evidence issues, time and money concerns and the impression that the client or their witnesses will make on a judge and jury. I think lawyers owe their clients the duty to be absolutely straight forward when talking about their case. I have had countless people come in and tell me that
another lawyer had said that they didn’t have time to take their case. What that means is that there is no money in the case or the lawyer perceives that the client cannot afford his services. Occasionally, people just come in with motives that are just incompatible with the values that the lawyer feels comfortable working with. Tell the client why you will or will not take the case. Tell the client what value your service adds to the client’s issue at hand. Make the client feel comfortable with the issues in his or her case and if a deposition will be involved, talk with them about what a deposition is and let them read a deposition. Talk with them about what they will be asked and what they are afraid they will be asked. It’s the lawyer’s job to help the client be as effective as possible in presenting their case. Your lawyer owes you the duty to be competent in the area of law where you need help and owes you the duty to put your interests first every time. Buckle up and drive safely. Please send the questions to: “Ask the Attorney,” P. O. Box 38, Florence, Alabama 35631 or visit our website at: www.mhatty.com
facebook: McCutcheon and Hamner, P.C. We will not print your full name in the article. We will not be able to return any written or preprinted items which are submitted.

I was both surprised and elated by the results of the election. However, the election of a Republican President and Congress does not guarantee that the serious problems we face will be fixed. We, the voters, must hold the Trump Administration and both houses of Congress responsible to follow through with the promises they made in the party platform. Here are some of the problems that must be addressed. For national security we must return the armed forces to the mission of being ready to defend our nation rather than social engineering. This will require a housecleaning in the departments of Defense, Army, Navy, and Air Force. All of the regulations giving preference to homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, and transsexuals must be rescinded. Removing the department secretaries is a good start but the bureaucrats at all levels that are in league with them must also be removed. The article in the manual for courts-martial that made sodomy a punishable offense should be restored. At the very least the “don’t ask don’t tell” should be restored. Another issue that must be dealt with if we are to have a combat ready force is women in combat. The pretense that there is no difference in men and women is insanity. And so is the pretense that simply making regulations will keep combat arms soldiers from doing what comes naturally when isolated with women in the field. Equal employment opportunity should not be considered a mission for the military. I served from 1951-1972 in the combat branches of the Army–Infantry, Armor and Special Forces, ten of those years as a non-commissioned officer and ten as a commissioned officer. During that period the rule was “the needs of the service” rather than equal opportunity. I don’t recall ever hearing any references to employment opportunity. The constitutional freedom of religion must be restored for the military. Currently Christian chaplains are very restricted in their ministry to the service members. Service members have been punished for having Bibles, for expressing their beliefs that homosexuality is sin and for not believing in homosexual marriage. Several years ago an Army officer wrote a letter to a military magazine questioning the necessity of ethics and morality is qualifications for military officers. The response was a firestorm of letters from army officers as well as civilians horrified that anyone, especially an army officer, would even pose such a question. The response was unanimous that morality is the basis for integrity without which that institution could not survive as a viable defense force for our nation. Now the commander-in-chief of our Armed Forces, along with many other politicians are promoting immorality and requiring that it be accepted by our service men and women. The generals and admirals go along and pretend that it is OK so that they can keep their stars. The new administration must completely reverse this.

Angel Trees Up in Four Shoals Locations SHOALS–The Salvation Army of The Shoals kicked off the Annual Angel Tree program last weekend with an event at Dillards in Florence Mall. Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of the Salvation Army’s highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by the Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmastime. This year we are serving 1,488 local children for the Angel Tree program and MANY Senior Citizens. His Criminal Actions Editor: According to retired Navy Captain Joseph R John of Combat Veterans for Congress, Barack Obama had the Department of Health and Human Services pay the employees of George Soros’ ACORN groups to illegally register millions of illegal aliens voters with our tax funds for eight years. These ACORN organizations in all fifty states had to change their names after ACORN was convicted of voter fraud in eleven states. In 2012 Pew research Center found that approximately twenty-four million voters registered were no longer valid or significantly inaccurate. The study also found that more than 1.8 million dead people were still listed as voters and approximately 2.75 million were registered to vote in more than one state. More than 7.5 million of the voters listed above probably had their votes cast illegally for Hillary. Captain

John believes the claim by the liberal establishment that Hillary got more votes than Trump is a lie. She did not get more legal votes. In my opinion, Obama’s misappropriation of federal funds to pay for illegal activities is criminal, and he should be held accountable. Euell T White Florence

he contentious last few weeks have given way to our uniquely American holiday. Thanksgiving is a celebration originally based on thanking God for the summer’s bounty and asking his blessing for the future. It gives us an opportunity to slow down and realize we live in a highlyblessed country. It’s easy to take for granted what we have. We’re a spoiled bunch. Our disagreements are largely superficial in nature and most of us have a fraction of the worries that plague others across this globe. We owe so much to people we never met who are centuries removed. They risked everything and sometimes TOM MAGAZZU lost everything to establish Editor this new country with a foundation of independence and a vision for excellence. We should remain thankful for those who continue to defend our freedoms and our way of life. Hopefully, we all will take the opportunity to pause and reflect. Have a safe and rewarding Thanksgiving weekend.

It’s Good Against Evil Editor: Hillary called Trump supporters deplorable, but whose supporters are burning, looting, damaging the property of others, acting like animals, and disgracing America and our political system to the rest of the world? Hillary and Obama got what they deserved. Christians are not willing to give in to so many ungodly demands of the Obama/democratic agenda that have been shoved down our throats the past eight years. I imagine that Clinton, Obama, and the media are going to do all they can to destroy everything and anything Trump will try to accomplish to make us a more decent and law-abiding society. It truly is Good against Evil. Paul Sabatino Florence See LETTERS... on Page 17

Playoff... Continued from Page 14 1990’s the Lions were a playoff fixture. They were seeded highly enough to earn numerous home playoff games, many of which were the dessert of Thanksgiving weekends for the UNA football community. That was in and around the time of UNA’s three national championships. Since that time there were a few years when UNA played away games on Thanksgiving and some down years when their season ended early in November. Playing at home on Thanksgiving weekend was a rarity. Bobby Wallace has been back as the head coach for a few years and the team recently claimed its fourth consecutive Gulf South Conference Football Championship. The Lions earned a bye this past weekend as the playoffs opened for 24 other Division II teams. The results of the opening playoff weekend were not known as of this writing. However, we do know UNA is hosting the Valdosta State / North Carolina-Pembroke winner this Saturday at noon. It’s the second consecutive year that the Lions are hosting a playoff game two days after Thanksgiving. We like that resurrected tradition. Welcome back, Coach Wallace!

A Figurative Father Editor: I believe many of Hillary’s supporters are so upset because they are afraid. They are afraid of change, afraid of not getting their way, and afraid of consequences to their actions. In short, they are afraid of someone telling them what to do. What does this sound like to you? A child? Without proper guidance a child can grow into an adult body with the same will of a child. Children throw tantrums. Children want their way. Children do not consider consequences or even fully realize why they do these things. Guess whose job it is to turn children into responsible, mature, enlightened adults – the parents’. Parents, plural. It takes both See LETTERS... on Page 23

Editor: Forty percent of Alabamians live in rural areas. Our rural communities are wonderful places to live and work and there are fifty hospitals across the state which serve this population. That is why the Board of Trustees of the Alabama Hospital Association proudly joined with stakeholders across the country to celebrate National Rural Health Day on November 17 to “Celebrate the Power of Rural.” Alabama’s rural hospitals deliver an impressive array of services including emergency, primary, chronic, and long-term care as well as home healthcare, hospice care, and assisted living. They treat more than 620,000 patients in the emergency department every year, and 10,000 babies are born in these rural hospitals annually. Access to care is essential and rural hospitals play a pivotal role in their communities. The hardworking staff at Alabama’s rural hospitals ensure that every Alabamian receives the right care, at the right place, at the right time. Rural hospitals also contribute to the overall strength of the community’s economy. Hospitals are among the largest employers wherever they are located and in rural areas these jobs are even more impactful. In fact, nearly 15,000 people are employed by our rural hospitals. Fourteen percent of total employment in rural areas is attributed to the healthcare sector.

parents (both male and female, respectively) to have a well-balanced adult child. What happens when both parents aren’t there? Let’s face it folks; there are many absent fathers today with staggering results. Without a dominant male in their lives children are at a great disadvantage in this world. It can be a biological father, uncle, stepfather, or grandfather. This male influence is so crucial to their maturity that without it many remain in child-mode forever. They disrespect, misunderstand, and even fear a dominant male in any role and may not even know or understand why. Women should not deny the presence of a dominant male figure in their children’s lives. Rather, they should seek it. I can’t help but conclude that many of the tantrums we are seeing due to the recent presidential election are more a result of the missing male role model they’ve so desperately needed to prepare for this moment in time. Just a spin to think about. S Simon Killen

HEARTWORM HAZARDS What you don’t know about heartworm disease can hurt your dog or cat

More retirement homes permit pets
• TigerPlace, a retirement community in Columbia, MO, is a pet lover’s dream. Residents can keep their pets with them and benefit from an pet care staff that helps walk, feed and care for the pets as needed. Allowing pets and providing pet-care services is a growing trend at retirement communities. TigerPlace, with 90 residents, is operated in collaboration with the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri. Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction at MU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says pets encourage people to walk, decrease loneliness and promote social interactions with other people. • Prehistoric best friend? Scientists in Siberia are studying the mummified remains — including skin, hair, internal organs and stomach contents — of two unusually well-preserved puppies thought to have died in a landslide more than 12,000 years ago. Amazingly, the brain of one is intact, the first-ever completely preserved brain of a Pleistocene canid. DNA tests on the first puppy, found five years ago, confirm dog rather than wolf ancestry, but the genetic makeup of ancient dogs and wolves is similar. The pups’ genomes will be further evaluated in the hope of learning more about canine domestication and evolution. • A veterinarian at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine is working with physicians to test a new delivery method for a canine melanoma vaccine, according to an article by David Wahlberg in the Wisconsin State Journal. David Vail, DVM, is testing a modified tattoo gun with multiple punctures, which may induce a stronger immune reaction than a single injection. The canine melanoma vaccine, an immunotherapy approach that works to prevent the skin cancer from spreading, was approved in 2010 and is currently injected intramuscularly. If the new approach works in pet dogs, it could also benefit humans. — Dr. Marty Becker, Kim Campbell Thornton and Mikkel Becker

Med dicare Minutte “Prescription Drug Plans 2”
When looking at a prescription drug plan the first thing that most people look at is how much the plan cost. There are drug plans that cost less than $20. There are also plans that cost more than $100. Conventional wisdom tells us that something that cost $100 has to be better than something that cost $20, but when talking about Medicare prescription drug plans this isn’t necessarily true. You have to look deeper than the premium of the plan to see if it’s the right fit for you. One important part of a drug plan is the deductible phase of the plan. A deductible is the amount of money you must pay out of your pocket before your plan will begin to pay. For example, if your plan has a $400 deductible you may have to pay the first $400 before the plan will pay. The good news is plans treat deductibles differently. Some plans have deductibles on all tiers of drugs. On some plans the deductible only pertains to tier 3, 4 or 5 drugs but not tier 1 or 2 drugs. Other plans have no deductible at all. The way to know if your plan has a deductible on the prescriptions you are taking is to look at the plan’s Formulary to find your drug’s tier and the Summary of Benefits to see if you have a deductible. You will also want to know if the plan requires you to pay a coinsurance on any of your prescriptions. A coinsurance is a percentage you will pay on your prescription. A lot of plans have a coinsurance on tier 4 and tier 5 prescriptions. This means if you have a coinsurance of 20% on your prescription, and the prescription retails for $500, you would pay 20% or $100. Next week we will look at copays, formularies and provider networks. If you have questions regarding any aspect of Medicare or Medicare health plans feel free call us at Alabama Health Guidance (256-284-7249), stop by our office at 879 Florence Blvd (Four Lane Shopping Center) or email me at ikey@ alabamahealthguidance.com. Alabama Health Guidance is an independent insurance agency and is not affiliated with Medicare or any other government agency.

Dear Dave, My wife and I make a little over $50,000 a year combined, and we’re almost debt-free. Right now, we have $50,000 left on our mortgage and $4,000 in student loans left to pay. We’re both really excited about the future, and we’re thinking about selling our home and moving into a trailer her parents own. On top of this, we’d like to save my wife’s entire salary for five years to buy another, better house. What do you think of this plan? Travis

Dear Travis, Man, I’m really excited for you two. You’re working hard to take control of your finances and pay off debt. This is what I mean when I use the phrase “gazelle intensity.” However, I think selling your home is going a bit too far at the moment. Despite a really rocky road the last several years, the housing and real estate market is finally starting to rebound. At this point, there’s every indication that your home is going to go up in value. If you go with your plan, you’re going to lose all that appreciation value and lower your standard of living at the same time. While you have something of a modest income, I think you make enough money to pay off the house and become prosperous during the next five to seven years, without going to the extreme. Keep up the great work! — Dave
Dear Dave, My husband and I are self-employed, and we currently pay almost $1,000 a month for health insurance. I’ve heard you talk about the potential for rates to increase as much as 40 to 60 percent next year. Are there other options, such as just saving the money in case of medical emergencies? Anna Dear Anna, You don’t want to go completely without insurance, because you’ll get penalized by the government. Remember, when it comes to health insurance, the problem usually isn’t a kidney stone or a trip to the emergency room for a few stitches. The problem is a cancer diagnosis, which ends up costing $500,000 or more. You might want to check into an HSA (Health Savings Account) type of plan within the exchanges. Another thing you could look at is one of the medical sharing programs through a Christian organization such as Christian Healthcare Ministries. But a higher deductible, HSA-type plan might help keep your premiums down. It’s sad, but this is what
Obamacare has done to independent people like you and me who are self-employed. It’s destroying small group plans, and I guess that was their intent. I suppose they wanted to put those companies out of business, so the government could take it over. — Dave Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business, and CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Safety... Continued from Page 14 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that oven temperatures should be no lower than 325° and turkeys should be completely thawed before cooking. A food thermometer must register a safe minimum temperature of 165° inside a turkey before it is served. It’s best to cook stuffing in a casserole dish outside the turkey, but if you choose to stuff a turkey, make sure the stuffing reaches a temperature of 165° (CDC) to ensure there is no bacterial contamination. Refrigerate all leftovers within two hours. People with food allergies who have not prepared their own meals at home should ask about the ingredients and how food was prepared to prevent exposure to allergens. COMMON INJURIES One of the most common injuries during the Thanksgiving holiday is cuts with knives – specifically carving knives that cut fingers or hands. Be careful when slicing food, and more specifically, do not rush. If possible, allow someone who is experienced in handling sharp knives to do the carving. Burns are another common injury during Thanksgiving. The kitchen can be a dangerous place, especially around the oven and grill. A special note of caution is given for anyone who deep fries a turkey. This can be very dangerous and cause serious burns and fires, especially if you have never attempted this before. Make sure to carefully research the proper way to “deep fry”
and use extreme c a u t i o n . Frying a turkey should be done well clear of the home or any flammable structure. Never attempt to deep fry a frozen turkey. EATING SAFELY The key is to approach the Thanksgiving meal with moderation. Food is usually abundant and for some it is too much and consumed too quickly. For those with medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease and high blood pressure, excess salt is dangerous. Monitor your sodium intake and make sure you take any necessary prescription medications as you would any other day. Consult your doctor if necessary. Eat food slowly and when satisfied take a break and allow your body to process it. Eating too quickly can cause heartburn, indigestion, and may create chest pain, which could require medical assessment. INJURY PREVENTION Before or after the meal, it’s common for many to head outside and play sports (football, basketball, etc.). Weekend warriors beware! Injuries can occur for those not used to routine exercise. Emergency physicians recommend having fun and going easy — not overdoing it. It’s important to pace yourself after a big meal. For those not used to regular physical activity, you might want to reconsider and participate in a different activity. Emergency physicians see many sprains, strains, and fractures in those who try to do too much too quickly. We also treat patients who develop shortness of breath and chest pain from overextension. ACEP is the national medical specialty society representing emergency medicine.

This week is the week for Americans to feel thankful. Not really, but we definitely talk about it a lot more this time of year. Some have stretched it out to a thankfulness month, posting a different thing they’re thankful for each day on social media. I love reading them, and I love the spirit of gratefulness that this time of year inspires. The stores are full of signs and clothing and anything else that will be still long enough to be printed on, all with catchy slogans about being grateful. I just wish that we didn’t seem to pack it all up so quickly and get back to grousing about what isn’t wonderful about life. In my opinion, if you wake up in the United States of America, every day is a day to give thanks. Even though our country just suffered through what was probably the most contentious election in its 240 years. Even though we all admit that there are areas for improvement, from our government all the way down to the way we interact with each other as individuals. Even though we as a people are incredibly divided on several big issues. Even though all of those things are true, there is no better place to live on this planet. If there was, don’t you think all the celebrities who swore they were leaving if the election didn’t go their way, would be gone? They certainly have the means to pick up and move wherever their hearts desire. That just proves what most of us already know: that this country is not without flaws, but we are all incredibly fortunate to call it home. Many times when we think about what we are thankful for, we think of the things that we like about our lives. The things that are going our way. One thing that I often forget is to be thankful for the challenges in life. The things that are tough to go through, but that are the very things that make us better people. Stronger people, people who appreciate things. It’s hard, but I want to try to be more thankful for the not-so-good times. I want to celebrate all of life, the good and the bad. What if we as a country made thankfulness a part of everyday life instead of a certain season? Happy Thanksgiving, all year long. Please feel free to send your questions. Rest assured I will only use your first name when I answer your questions. Email to:

CHUCK CABANISS AND SON HOME IMPROVEMENT
The Love Of God Jesus said in John 5:42 “But I know you, that ye have not the love off God in you.” Jesus again in Matthew 12:34 “O generation off vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out off the abundance off the heart the mouth speaketh.” What comes out of your mouth? The Apostle Paul in Romans 5:5 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love off God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” At salvation, the love of God is given by the Holy Ghost. In a mature saved, born-again child of God, it’s near impossible to hide the joy and peace and love that indwells them. Smiles of happiness and elation should fill the congregations of the Lord on each worship day. Tears of joy should fill our hearts when singing and praying and hearing preaching fills the air. When God’s word is read and taught and preached and sung, God himself is present because what is being done is to worship and glorify Him. One of the great visible signs of saved folk is their eyes and mouth beam when hearing about the great God and mighty Saviour we have. We have so much to live and die for. Hebrews 10:34 “For ye had compassion of me (PAUL) in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, KNOWING in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.” Now, brothers and sisters in Christ, those things should put a smile on your face. Titus 2:13 “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing off the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” 2 Timothy 4:8 “Hencefforth there is laid up for me a crown off righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” What about you friend, where does your joy and peace and love come from? What does your heart and mind and soul dwell on? The love of God and the Holy Spirit living in you is demonstrated by your joy, giving, loving, serving, and having peace in your heart. Are these things in your heart? They can be. Ask Jesus Christ to help you and clean you up and save you today. Christ loves you and will do it right now.
