HOME EFFICIENCY UPGRADE COSTS PLUMMET! ELDERLY CT RESIDENT GETS $9,000+ BENEFIT Connecticut – For many Connecticut residents, upgrading their home’s energy efficiency seems completely out of reach. The thought of assessing what is needed and all the costs associated with energy efficiency would send shivers down the spine of any homeowner. What most Nutmeggers don’t know is that there is a program that can not only make it easy to assess your home’s needs, but could also put the costs well within reach, and may even eliminate the cost all together. Case in point, 92 year old Connecticut resident, Mary Osborne, was faced with a dilemma. Mary’s Cape Cod-style home was in need of some help – big time help. Built in 1940, Mary’s home has been difficult and costly to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. According to Mary, “This house was built almost 80 years ago and the furnace would often go ‘clunk’. I knew something had to be done.” However, being that Mary is on a xed income, she felt trapped not knowing her options. With each passing month her rising energy costs were forcing her to make some tough decisions. So, before last winter, she nally turned to Wesson Energy for help. As an authorized contractor for the Home Energy Solutions (HES) program, Wesson Energy was able to complete a HES energy assessment of Mary’s home within days. The HES audit carries the nominal fee of $124 and consists of a thorough efficiency examination of the home –including checking HVAC systems, air flow/leak detection and insulation depth. The result of Mary’s audit was her home’s unique energy rating along with a categorized report outlining her home’s performance. She also received a detailed recommendation of what was needed to achieve peak energy efficiency. As an added benefit, the HES program also provided on-the-spot solutions like air sealing, replacing old incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs in areas with high foot traffic, and even

installing water-saving devices. All in all, the HES audit alone can carry a $1,200 value, which is not a bad return on a $124 investment. Mary’s HES energy efficiency audit revealed that her home needed a signicant upgrade to keep her home comfortable all year long and lessen the impact on her monthly bills. However, the cost of the needed upgrades was well outside Mary’s budget. The total cost to upgrade her furnace and insulation was over $9,000. When asked what Mary’s home needed Wesson Energy’s HPC-Home Performance Contracting Division Manager, Jane Bourdeau, stated, “Through the audit of the 1,040 square foot, 3 bedroom single-family house, we determined that in addition to replacing the outdated boiler, insulation was also needed to keep the house comfortable year-round.” This is when Mary learned about a little known program - the HES IE. The “IE” is a short acronym for Income Eligible. The HES IE program exists to help homeowners who earn an annual income below the state’s 60% income median. This means if you qualify, the cost for the audit and any efficiency upgrades may be available at little or no cost! This makes it perfect for those on xed incomes or have fallen on difficult times. In Mary’s case, because she fell within the HES IE guidelines, not only was her audit completely covered, 100% of the recommended upgrades were also covered. That’s a benet of $9,158.68 of which Mary paid…wait for it…nothing! Here is a breakdown of what Mary’s $9,000+ upgrade included: • Air sealing to eliminate drafts and areas where heated and cooled air could escape. • Installation of energy-efficient LED bulbs in high-use areas.

• Brand new, 85% efficient cast iron Burnham boiler. • Basement and knee wall insulation. • Roof vents for proper ventilation. According to Mrs. Bourdeau, “in a typical home, we insulate the attic and basement [because] that’s where 90% of insulation benet is derived. However, because Mary’s house did not have an attic, we insulated the short walls below the ceiling and added roof vents for effective ventilation.” Since the HES energy audit was completed, Mary has reported, “This past winter my house was much warmer after Wesson did such wonderful work that I appreciated so much. I can really see the difference in my energy costs every month as I pay the bills. I also have more money to do more of the things I really enjoy.”

HOW CAN YOU QUALIFY FOR HES-IE? For more information on how to apply for the Home Energy Solutions (HES) Income Eligible (IE) Program, or Home Energy Solutions (HES) audit for a house or apartment, please feel free to contact Jane Bourdeau directly at (203) 706-1421.

AUTOMOTIVE

Top tips for successful buyers and sellers in the auto salvage industry

Brandpoint

The auto salvage industry is more popular than ever. While automotive prices rise, so does the difficulty in finding a good deal on a vehicle, and yet, many are still misinformed about what a salvage car truly is. Automotive consumers have been misled to believe that a salvage car, scrap car, junk car and total loss vehicle are one in the same. As a result, many consumers are not aware of the value that the auto salvage industry has to offer. WHAT IS AUTO SALVAGE

Cars that are categorized as salvage come in all makes, models, conditions and mileage, but what does auto salvage re-

Meal FROM PAGE 15

out the best flavors in your meats for your next family gathering, Anderson offers these three important tips: SMOKE IT LOW AND SLOW.

Holidays are a time to escape the hustle that consumes us the rest of the year. Why not apply the same relaxed approach to your holiday meal? As An-

ally mean? The term auto salvage is quite simply the state of the car’s title, and it refers to vehicles that have been characterized by insurance companies, adjusters and the states as damaged in some way. The term “salvage” is generically used negatively; however, a salvaged vehicle does not necessarily imply that it cannot be rebuilt, repaired or safely driven again. In fact, many salvaged vehicles are cars that have undergone minimal aesthetic damage, and rebuilt or repaired vehicles are specifically required to pass a special inspection before they can legally be released for the open road. Alternatively, a total loss vehicle is not a type of title, but

it is a type of salvage vehicle. A total loss vehicle occurs when the insured property is totally destroyed or damaged in a way that cannot be repaired or recovered for future use. It is important to understand the difference in order to truly appreciate how the auto salvage industry operates - this also enables buyers and sellers to make smart choices.

derson explains, rushing the process can rob your meats of both texture and flavor. “Slow smoking under low heat allows the meat to relax, and for the fat to properly render,” Anderson says. “It doesn’t matter what piece of meat you are cooking, it’s all about temperature and time.” He suggests cooking temperatures of between 225 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit for the tastiest and juiciest final product.

SKIP THE WOOD CHIPS.

THE AUTO SALVAGE INDUSTRY

From the early days of automobiles, automotive recycling has developed into a refined and technology-driven industry. It is valuable as a consumer to understand that the auto salvage industry is really the automotive recycling industry. The pri-

Wood chips are popular and convenient, but you will never get the same satisfying smoke flavors out of wood chips that you will from using a small log. “Wood chips are a shortcut. And who takes shortcuts when preparing the perfect holiday meal,” Anderson says. Wood chips also have the tendency to catch fire, which can negatively impact your cooking temperature and cooking time.

mary focus of all entities within the industry is to repurpose, reuse and retain the value of all things automotive, and find a new life for the vehicle or components of the vehicle. The auto salvage industry is a thriving part of the automotive supply chain. Automotive recycling as a whole represents over $32 billion in sales annually, and the industry employs over 140,000 employees in the U.S. alone. In addition to the critical role that the auto salvage industry plays in the automotive supply chain, automotive recyclers play a valuable role in the environmentallyfriendly process of dismantling, recycling or repurposing of motor vehicles. Buying and

selling a salvaged vehicle is not only more cost efficient, it also preserves natural resources and significantly reduces pollution and the demand for landfill space. Buyers and sellers of salvaged vehicles can sleep soundly knowing that all title discrepancies must always be announced during the transfer of a vehicle. This is including, but not limited to, mileage, salvage, theft, recovery, stolen vehicle, buybacks and more. Insurance transfers also require full disclosure, and by law, titles will always be changed to reflect the vehicle’s true status. Remember to be a smart buyer and check

All buyers and sellers should take it upon themselves to fully understand vehicle history and title status before offering to buy and sell cars. If you are looking to buy and sell a salvage title vehicle, Copart.com exceeds all expectations and demands. Copart, Inc., a leader in live online salvage and insurance auto auctions, is a publicly traded and reputable company with a dependable global footprint. Copart has grown into the premier online destination for quality vehicles that links buyers and sellers all around the world.

Though a fan of the flavors derived from oak and applewood, Anderson takes a different approach when the weather turns colder. “I like cherrywood for Turkey. And for ham, nothing beats the smokey aromas that come from hickory,” he says.

spices. Spices greater than 6-months-old will lose much of their flavor, robbing your meal of the holiday’s signature tastes. “At home, I grind my own spices. There’s no better way to achieve the best possible flavors,” he says. For the rest of us, Anderson suggests we refresh our aging spice racks in order to bring real flavor to the table. Smoking the meats you typically serve over the holidays takes the best of tra-

dition and introduces a new level of flavor. “This is the time when treating the people who are most special to us really matters. A little extra effort can make a holiday meal more meaningful and memorable than ever before,” Anderson says. To learn more about Famous Dave’s and how you can make your holiday meal even better, visit FamousDaves.com/Holiday. There, you can also find Anderson’s recipe for his famous bread pudding.

Tech tools that can help you find a mortgage and home faster Brandpoint

Whether you’re a firsttime or experienced homebuyer, chances are a good portion of your real estate journey will take place online. In fact, four in 10 homebuyers start their house-hunting with an online search, according to the National Association of REALTORS. It’s easy to understand why: Online tools and apps can make the homebuying experience - including finding a mortgage - easier and more enjoyable. If you’ll be shopping for a home this fall and winter, use the tools homebuyers find most useful, according to the Bank of America Homebuyer Insights Re-

port: • Mortgage calculators - It’s important you’re as comfortable with your mortgage terms and lender as you are with the home you’re paying for. An affordable mortgage helps homebuyers reap the full benefits of home ownership, including building equity and long-term financial security, and a mortgage calculator can help you understand what you would pay each month, as well as estimate monthly mortgage payments and rate options. As the Homebuyer Insights Report revealed, more than half of Generation X homebuyers and 46 percent of millennials and baby boomers use mortgage calculators dur-

gage loan officers and lending institutions. More than a third (36 percent) of firsttime homebuyers and over a quarter (28 percent) of experienced homebuyers use bank apps or websites to research reviews of lenders and loan officers. • Loan status portals Applying for a mortgage can sometimes be overwhelming, but real-time loan status information is transforming the process. For example, Bank of America’s Home Loan Navigator allows mortgage applicants to securely upload, submit and sign documents, get real-time status updates on their application and loan, receive important documents and disclosures and even communicate with experts via secure messaging. • Mobile real estate listings - With many home listing websites available, it can be difficult to narrow down online searches to homes that meet all your criteria in your location of choice. Using a bank’s online real estate center can help you refine your home search or, if you’re selling, it can help you determine your home’s estimated value. And some even provide the ancillary information you’re looking for - like school data and walkability scores - to make a home purchase decision. • Down payment sources - Saving for a down payment can be one of the most challenging tasks of buying a house. It’s sometimes difficult to know how much you’ll need for your down payment, or to figure out how to fit the ex-

tra savings category into your monthly budget. You can find numerous down payment calculators online, but Bank of America’s Down Payment Resource Center goes a big step further than most by offering a searchable database of more than 1,000 local and national assistance programs that may be able to save you money on your down payment. • Social media - Decorating your home is one of the most enjoyable aspects of home ownership. Many buyers turn to social media resources like Pinterest for home decor inspiration. In fact, 49 percent of millennials use Pinterest, 37 percent Facebook and 33 percent Instagram for home decorating ideas, while 32 percent of Gen Xers use Pinterest, 37 percent like Facebook and 11 percent favor Instagram, according to the Homebuyer Insights Report. • Home design apps With inspiration in hand, homebuyers can use home design apps to put their ideas into virtual reality. These apps allow you to take and store room measurements, make notes on design ideas and see virtual representations of what your decor plans will look like in your home. From white walls to fullyfurnished, many design apps can help you visualize your dream interior for free, and more robust versions are available for purchase. TAKE CONTROL OF CABINETS

Who doesn’t want more cabinet space? Storage is essential in a kitchen, but too many cabinets or too dark cabinetry can make an already small kitchen feel downright miniscule.

Take a long, hard look at your kitchen cabinets. Do you really need all of them? If you decide you can make more efficient use of fewer cabinets, consider removing some to make the kitchen feel larger. If you just can’t give up

any cabinet space, you can still make your kitchen feel brighter by painting or staining them a lighter hue and using bright, reflective hardware in modern styles. Glass cabinet doors can also visually open up a kitchen and inspire you to greater

organization so that the inside of your cabinets always look guest-ready. RIGHT-SIZE APPLIANCES

You may fantasize about a six-burner professional range or a massive built-in refrigerator, but appliances that are too big for a room fail on multiple levels. They not only make the room look smaller by virtue of their dominating size, they can hinder usability by obstructing other work areas like cabinets, counters and other appliances when the doors are open. Fortunately, appliance makers offer products in multiple sizes and finishes to fit any space and design HOMES » PAGE 27

Five ways to reinvent your garage Brandpoint

The garage — it’s that space where you used to just store your car, lawn mower, power tools, bikes, bats and boxes of things you wore in the 90s. But to say a garage is only for storage is like saying a truck is only for hauling dressers and box springs. From game room to workshop, man cave to hangout your garage has the potential to be anything you want it to be. So if you’re thinking of redecorating or remodeling your house, don’t spend all your time picking out kitchen tile and arguing over what type of counter looks best - step into your garage and let yourself dream big. With the right materials, some creativity and a little work, you can turn your garage into the star of the house. How? TV personality and award-winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following five ideas to get you excited about all the possibilities. TOUGHEN UP YOUR WALLS

No matter what you want to do with your garage, first make sure your walls can stand up to real life. There’s probably no space in the house more susceptible to scratches, scuffs and accidental holes than the

garage - so pick your walls accordingly. Look for PURPLE Hi-Impact XP made by National Gypsum for extra wear and tear to resist everything from car doors opened too close to the wall to the hockey sticks swung a little too hard. This drywall is embedded with fiberglass mesh to make it impact and penetration resistant - and like all PURPLE drywall, it resists moisture, mold and mildew. MAKE YOUR GARAGE YOUR HIDEAWAY

Sometimes you need to get away from it all - especially from your “honey do” or project list - and the garage can be where you go, your hangout, an extension of yourself and a definite point of pride. Add a snack machine, fridge, swivel chair or two and big screen TV, and you and your friends will BRANDPOINT have it made. The garage - it’s that space where you used to just store your car, lawn mower, power tools, bikes, bats and boxes of LIFT IT UP things you wore in the 90s. Most people have a lot of stuff to store in the garage in addition to cars, tools and bikes. And let’s face it, the more available space you have, the more likely you’ll find stuff to fill it. That means you’ll need to get creative with storage. In addition to shelves and cabinets attached to the walls, another way to store your stuff is to use

Walls also can serve as anchors for storage systems that hold your tools, bikes, boxes and equipment. And you can rest assured that high-performing

There are some things that just don’t belong in your house but are perfect for the garage. Just like restaurants that have
