Town could turn into ‘a polluted traffic island’ By Barbara Goulden

Fears have been raised that historic Warwick will be turned into little more than ‘polluted traffic island’. A campaign has been launched by the Warwick Society in light of the Revised Local Plan, which proposes thousands of new homes for the town. Now three county councillors have added their voices to the campaign. Conservative Angela Warner along with Labour councillors John Holland and Jenny St John say the enlarged road infrastructure needed to support the 4,500 new homes being proposed for the south of Warwick will seriously affect

the health of local residents and the structure of multiple historic buildings. Altogether the revised Local Plan now under consultation calls for a total of 11,853 new homes across the district over the next 15 years. But Warwick bears the brunt of these - not only with the 4,500 south of the town but 500 east of Whitnash around Warwick Gates, which the district council is proposing should be a new parish in its own right. News of Stratford’s local plan also suggests 2,000 homes south of Gaydon. Two weeks ago Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White wrote to district council leader Michael Doody saying planners should go back to the drawing board. The Conservative MP said estimates

on the numbers of new homes represented an “unacceptable burden” and the voices of existing residents should be taken into account. Three more public meetings have been called to discuss the issues before all comments have to be sent back to the district council by the end of this month. The first is at Aylesford School at 7pm on Monday (July 15), following the insistence of residents in Chase Meadow who are concerned about proposed gypsy sites. The second will be at Whitnash Primary School at 6.30pm on Tuesday and a third has been arranged by Warwick town councillors and is due to take place in the Guy Nelson Hall at Warwick School at 7pm on July 22nd. Traditionally councillors

in Warwick have not had as much clout as their larger numbers in Leamington or the Conservative-led Kenilworth town council where there are just two Liberal Democrats. But in response to the hugely controversial plan, Warwick councillors have joined forces with those serving on Whitnash town council and Bishops Tachbrook parish council and all have declared their support for the stand taken by the Warwick Society. County councillor Warner, who is also GP said: “Warwick already suffers from pollution levels above European guidelines on safety. This is linked to strokes, heart and respiratory diseases as well as some cancers and asthma.”

PICTURE SPECIAL MYTON ROCKS

Youngsters prove that Myton Rocks Photos by Jass Lall

Warwick was certainly rocking last Friday when popular X-Factor contestants The Risk, along with Tyler and Stevie from America and a host of other groups and singer-songwriters, turned up at Myton School to celebrate the arts and creativity. The programme for the day - called Myton Rocks - was delivered by fourteen and fifteen-year-old students (Year 10), who were set the challenge of laying on a festival likely to appeal to 11 to 13-year-olds.

Head Paul MacIntyre said: “Year 10 students did a magnificent job in planning, organising and impressing us all. This was an incredibly ambitious, unique event that arose out of months of planning.” Members of the town centre’s Warwick Rocks team turned up on the day to video highlights of the event and ask students about their favourite food and films in readiness for the Film and Food Festival which runs from August 17 to 25. Most of the singers who performed, including The Parades, Charlie Drew and Jay Tyer, can be seen on YouTube.
