2012 Winter Klondike The Year of the Snow Ninja 2012 was another fulfilling year at Camp Vista of keeping the strong tradition of creating leaders in adverse conditions. There were no major injuries, a small patch of snow and laughs heard through the night. It was the first time Troop 386 from Greater New Birth Church came to the event, and it won’t be their last. District Award of Merit This award is given out to volunteers who help at the district level. They are nominated by their peers and winners are picked based on continued years of dedication to Scouting. Congratulations to Scott Selby and James Tremblay!

Scott Selby has lead the district’s Scouting For Food effort and made sure that we reach every last house to ensure we collect as much food as possible for those in need. He has also helped with other district activities and camp promotions.

Jim Tremblay has brought back the District Pinewood Derby and made sure that every boy in the district has at least one chance to race a car. He has helped at numerous district events and activities including the Bayshore recruitment, Winter Klondike, merit badge clinics and many more.

Youth Service Award This award is given to adults who help with packs, troops and crews in the Polaris District. They were nominated by their peers for going above and beyond the call of duty. The boys in the district are lucky to have such great leaders. Pack 197-Jennifer Coons; Troop 400-Tara Serebin; Troop 400-Robert Frick; Pack 393-Eileen Manger and Troop 194-Greg Holz.

Special Recognition Ray Erbe and Doug Reed II have served as the leaders of the Polaris District for the past several years and have recently stepped down. We will be giving a special tribute for their efforts. They dedicated time and energy to the district. Their leadership is why the Polaris District is healthy and providing a quality Scouting program to so many youth. were very supportive and the fact that the boys slept the whole way home Sunday was a good indication that they had fun. This was also the first year of the Snow Ninja Advanced Trail. A few boys accepted the challenge of the Snow Ninja Trail and most of them survived. Thank you to the new Klondike Chair, Vicky Doering, and her team for putting on another excellent event.

Summer Camp, Camping in the Summer The early bird deadline is April 10th, so make sure that each Scout, Den Leader, and parent is given information so they have the opportunity to learn Scouting skills in the fun outdoors.

The District Pinewood Race The Indianapolis 500 of Pinewood Derbys Whether a Scout wants to upgrade his current car or build a whole new one— every Cub Scout will have the opportunity to be named fastest in the district. Each car will also be entered into a best of show competition. The judging team will vote for two different categories, most original design (Young Engineer’s Award) and most realistic/best paint job (Craftsman Award).

There were tears of laughter and tears of sadness. There were hugs and high fives, there were winners and people who gave their best effort and best of all there were new bonds that formed. The 2012 Polaris District Dinner was highlighted by all of the awards that were given to the deserving volunteers and especially the kind words spoken by those who nominated them. Everyone left the event feeling inspired and reenergized.

Cost for this event is $2.00 per Scout. The event will be on April 14th and held in the Rotunda at Bayshore Town Center. If you have questions or need more information, contact Polaris District pinewood derby chair, Jim Tremblay, at (414) 975-3037 or by email at [email protected].

Pack of the Year - Pack 398 This award is given out to a pack that provides a quality program to their youth. It has been a banner year for Pack 398! Highlights of the summer were the Water Bottle Rocket launch, Scout Day at the Brewers where Cubmaster Mark Niehaus played the national Anthem. And over 20 Scouts attended the Polaris District In Town Day Camp at Kleztch Park. The fall recruitment drive saw 20 new tigers as well as many older boys join the pack brining the total membership to 90 Scouts. At this point, one in four boys at Richards Elementary School is in Cub Scouts.

Troop of the Year - Troop 194 This award is given out to a Troop that provides a quality program to their youth. Troop 194 had always been known as the Brown Deer troop, but they have spread past the village borders into Milwaukee, Glendale and River Hills. The boys love to go camping, hiking and canoeing, and participate in many community service projects throughout the year. The troop likes to plan a troop trip every few years and have gone to Patriot’s Point, S.C. (2 nights on Aircraft Carrier) that include camping in Kentucky. There was also a canoe trip to Boundary Waters. They have also have seen a nice number of boys from the troop participate in the National Jamboree, Philmont, Snow Base and NYLT. The troop is also proud of the many boys and adults that are involved in the Order of the Arrow. Troop 194 also has a great group of adult leaders that are proud to see the boys work their way up the ranks and become nice young men.

The Year of Boy Scouts Who Recruit Friends Rock Climb for FREE the Tiger Calling all Cubmasters: this spring we are hunting for tiger…Scouts. We are going to hold a special district recruitment in May focused on recruiting tigers. We will inform them of special tiger events that they can participate over the summer, so if the pack isn’t meeting, they still can get started. Please contact Josh Sova if you would like your schools to be contacted.

We are offering a free rock climbing experience at Turners in downtown Milwaukee to any current Boy Scout who recruits a boy to join their troop. The new recruit will also get to attend the rock climbing event that will include rock climbing, belaying, bouldering, rappelling, rope ladders and experienced trainers to help them along. The recruit must not currently be

in Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts. This incentive is not for Webelos crossing over. Scoutmasters, please ensure that all local packs have crossed their Webelos over into a Boy Scout troop. Other people are welcomed to attend the event at a reduced rate of $8 per person. Dates of the event are May 26 and June 9.
