Mission moments shared by dedicated local and global volunteers.

Sewing in Honduras In July I was part of a mission team that went to Honduras. I was in charge of the sewing projects and was pretty nervous, not knowing the language or how much the women knew about sewing. All they had was two trundle machines and the only light we had was from the open air windows. My worries were soon resolved when I found out how excited the women were to pick out colorful fabrics we brought with us. Our first project was to make drawstring backpacks. I had an interpreter to help me with instructions and we used a lot of hand gestures to show what we were doing. I helped one woman for a while before I was told that she was deaf, so it didn’t matter if I could speak the language or not, and it ended with a smile and a big hug. We made more than 20 backpacks that day. Each woman was allowed to keep one and the rest were donated to the church. The second day we made tie blankets. We also provided other sewing supplies and additional fabric that they could use later. The women were all proud of what they had accomplished and grateful for the experience. Throughout the rest of the trip, we learned much about the Honduran culture and the problems they face. Despite the primitive living conditions they deal with, we never heard anyone complaining, and they were always polite and hospitable. It was a humbling experience to realize how you can get by with so little, and how insignificant some of our own problems can be.

3 Tips

for Caring Everyday ADJUSTING TO CHANGE Part 4 of 4

Adjusting to a New Baby Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, babies bring joy, yes, but stress too! Adding a new person to the family is a big change, especially when they are totally dependent on you for everything! Even the simplest thing, like taking a shower can be a huge challenge. Consider these tips: ff Share duties so everyone in the family, even children, can feel a part of these exciting times and contribute in various ways. ff Set aside special time for each child of the family. Even ten minutes of uninterrupted time with just them can make a huge difference to their sense of security. ff Take care of yourself so you have something left to give to each other. New babies can be exhausting, so take others up on their offer to help, so you have time and energy to enjoy being a family. Tuesday, September 6 • 6:30 p.m. • Fellowship Hall In an effort to grow in our understanding of some of the issues of our day, Southwood will host periodic sessions called: Listen, Learn, Pray. These special sessions feature community leaders speaking about issues confronting our culture, city, country and the world. It will be a time to LISTEN, to LEARN, and to PRAY as we grow in our understanding of the complexities and injustices many face in this world.

• Topic: Diversity, inclusion and race in our community. • Leader: T.J. McDowell, Associate Vice President at Nebraska Wesleyan University. T.J. has facilitated diversity and inclusion presentations to a variety of audiences since 1989. His presentations incorporate stories from his own life to engage and challenge participants’ prejudice and stereotypes about people who are different.

Spirit-Life Retreat 24-hour Retreat • September 25–26 Pastor Greg will be leading a 24-hour Spiritual Retreat. The purpose of the retreat is to provide a place and time to get away from the rigors and busyness of life and spend personal time with God. The retreat will be held at the St. Benedicts Center in Schuyler, Nebraska. It begins on Sunday, September 25 at 4:00 p.m., and concludes on Monday, September 26 at 4:00 p.m.

Cost is $70 per person, which includes a single room and 3 meals. This retreat has a limit of 14 participants. If interested, please contact Michelle Smith at msmith@ southwoodlutheran.org or call 402.423.5511.
