“The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the birds for mirth, One is nearer God’s heart in a garden Than anywhere else on earth.” I read the poem over and over, and it somehow stuck with me over the years. I could not have known then, as a tomboy who loved riding horses and driving tractors that one day my heart would find a home in my own garden. At the time, it seemed more like a place of unending work than a conduit to God’s heart. But it happened. Today, in my backyard garden, I find peace and calm in a world too often filled with chaos. I thrill to watch the miracle of perennials coming back to life early each spring. I love the feel of the dirt as I plant annuals that burst into vibrant color in the summer. I hear God’s voice in the whisper of the wind and the song of the cardinals. I witness the beauty of God’s nature; and I get to be a part of it. I see God’s masterpieces everywhere I look; I pray in my garden. And there, the ugliness of the world falls away. In my garden, I breathe deeply, smile often, and find peace and calm. My garden is for me what Rick Warren refers to as “healthy food” for my brain. It is a place where I find renewal for my mind and my spirit. In my garden there are no debates, no social media, no negativity and ugliness. It’s just me and God and His creation. My prayer is that each of us find our garden, whatever that might be—a place where we are near God’s heart. A place where our minds and hearts are renewed by our awareness of God’s goodness and unending love. May you find your garden, and there, the renewal of your mind in Him.

When I was a young girl, I found myself reading the back cover of one of my mom’s gardening magazines. There, imbedded in a photo of a verdant garden scene, was a portion of the poem, “God’s Garden”, by Dorothy Frances Gurney:

Caring 3 Tips for Everyday

TRANSFORMED Part 3 of 6

Mental Transformation The only way to truly change your life is to change the way you think. What is the difference between “conforming” and “transforming”? Conforming is something we do to ourselves. Transforming is something God does in us, by renewing our minds. God doesn’t just want us to change our behaviors, he wants us to change the way we think. Here are 3 tips to get started: ff Read a daily devotion and talk it through with a friend. Discuss how you each may have interpreted it differently. What message is God sending? ff Choose a new hobby that you can do with a friend or family member or find a class to take together. fJoin f a book club or read a book with someone and discuss it.

NOTE: CareNotes will change out weekly to correspond with the Transformed topic of the week. Check them out!
