The Resurrection of Our Lord Divine Service I March 27, 2016

6:00 and 8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER Easter dawn is here as the sun rises to signal the beginning of this new day. On the first Easter, the real dawning happened inside Mary, Peter, and John, and eventually all the disciples, as they realized what had happened: Jesus had conquered death and returned to resurrected life, unbound by time and space. Moreover, as Job had prophesied and Paul confidently wrote, one day we shall see God with our own eyes as He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Our worship today is an opportunity to let the Son rise to break through the mists of our minds and the heaviness of our hearts. By the grace of God, we rejoice with the psalmist, “The Lord is God, and He has made His light to shine upon us” (Psalm 118:27). PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” LSB 457 INVOCATION, CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. 2

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. INTROIT P: I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; C: the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. P: The Lord is my strength and my song, C: and he has become my salvation; P: Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, C: your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. P: You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; C: you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. P: You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, C: the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, P: the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. C: The Lord will reign forever and ever. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; C: the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. KYRIE P: In peace let us pray to the Lord.

P: For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

3

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

P: Help, save, comfort and defend us gracious Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE: “This Is the Feast”

4

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray… Almighty God the Father, through Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You have overcome death and opened the gate of everlasting life to us. Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of our Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by Your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. ADULT CHOIR: “My Song Doth Bless the Lord, Our Risen God and King”…….…..Joseph M. Martin OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Job 19:23-27 "Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes--I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA AND VERSE

HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:1-18 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came 6

running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally, the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' " Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Sit CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (8:00am) HYMN OF THE DAY: “Jesus Lives! The Victory’s Won” LSB 490 SERMON: 6:00am “Mary: Resurrection Witness” (John 20:1-18) 8:00am “It’s a Red Letter Day” (Luke 24:8) 7

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PREFACE P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary . . . evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS

9

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the allavailing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. LORD'S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION

PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Sit About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord’s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the Lord’s Supper?” at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. 11

Sharing the Caring Christ with All Luke 24:1-12: When Mary Magdalene saw her risen Lord, she went with great excitement to tell the disciples that she had seen the Lord and related to them what Jesus had told her. We have seen our risen Lord by faith and tasted that He is good in Word and Sacrament. That sure faith inspires us to share with others the hope we have for eternity. Because Jesus lives, we live. And because Jesus lives, the person we tell can share that same life with us for eternity. What you’ve seen and tasted today compels you to share the Good News for life! Today’s Radio Broadcast by Delores Volkers in memory of Fred and Alma Volkers. We thank her for making today’s broadcast possible. We have sponsorship openings in May and June.
