From the Pastor: Dear sisters and brothers in Christ at Trinity, Back in the day when I was a teenager (the ‘60’s), there was a very popular song performed by an American rock group called the Byrds whose lyrics came straight out of the Bible. “Turn – Turn – Turn” was the song. And the lyrics? Essentially they were the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…” Those words and that song came to mind as I sat down to write this article for our newsletter which will basically take us through the season of summer. Perhaps we could alter the words of that song to go something like this when it comes to life in Minnesota during this summer season. “To everything, turn, turn, turn There is a season, turn, turn, turn, And a time for everything in Minnesota. A time to fish and a time to swim A time to golf and a time to camp out, A time to be at the lake, and a time to enjoy the cabin, A time to Bar-B-Q, and a time to picnic, A time to go on vacation and a time to relax.” I do pray that you will have the time to do some of those things…maybe even all of them during this season of summer! I also pray, and for this even more fervently, that there will be a time for worship in your life during this season of summer. Of all of the things we do and of all the activities we engage in during the season of summer with the goal of coming away from them refreshed and renewed, that’s the one activity which will in fact get the job done! Whether it is actually in worship here at Trinity or at a church close to where your weekend activities have taken you…our gracious God assures us that and promises us that He will refresh us through His words of grace in a way that is second to none! “Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…for your souls.” Try it. If you’ve not been in the habit of setting aside or keeping Sunday morning reserved for worship during the season of summer (or it could be a Monday evening or a Saturday evening or, as it will be here at Trinity, a Wednesday evening). If you’ve been in the habit of taking the summer off from worship. If you really want your Sundays to be a most relaxing and refreshing day and your weekends more of Table of Contents the same…then come and gather with God’s people around God’s Word. Each week From the Pastor pg 2 take Jesus up on His promise and His invitation to give you His special kind of DCO Corner pg 3 rest…“rest for your souls.” Let there be a time for worship in your life this season of Vacation Bible School Registration pg 4 summer! Worship/Music Notes pg 5 Grandparent Junction pg 6 Speaking of seasons, there is another very special season in life that many of our LWML pg 6 Trinity members are blessed to be in at this time. Namely, the season of being a POP Fundriaser Results pg 6 Grandparent! Recently we had a Bible class on that subject, and I plan on offering it More Than Enough pg 7 again. The Bible does have a lot to say about this season when we are blessed to Salt & Pepper pg 7 have another opportunity to impact well a child’s life, especially with regards to their Lutheran Student Fellowship pg 7 faith in Jesus. It is a very important season in life! Volunteer Opportunities pg 8 LIC Summer Camps pg 8 One of the outcomes from this class was the suggestion that we initiate a column Summer Schedule pg 8 within our newsletter for Grandparents. And so we will. We’ll call it “Grandparent Contact Us pg 8 Junction” and it will feature devotional thoughts and resources and words of encouragement for those who have been blessed with the title of “Grandma” or “Grandpa.” Hopefully, it will prove to be a blessing to us all, no matter what season of life we are in. 2016 National Offering

Every three years, our Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod gathers in convention to determine mission and ministry priorities for the coming three years. This year, we will gather July 9-14 in Milwaukee at the Wisconsin Center under the theme “Upon This Rock.” As part of the run-up to the triennial convention congregations are invited and encouraged to participate in a synod-wide gathering of special gifts called the National Offering. This triennium’s National Offering gives Lutherans across the country an opportunity through a special offering that will give the same bold confession as Peter: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”.

How will National Offering donations be put to work? · In WITNESS ... by planting new congregations here in the U.S., providing study Bibles for youth attending the Youth Gathering, equipping missionaries with tangible evangelism and teaching resources, and much more as God allows; · Through MERCY ... advocating for and protecting human life from conception to natural death, caring for disadvantaged children, reducing suffering and living conditions among the poor — to connect people with the Gospel — and much more as God allows; · Strengthening our LIFE TOGETHER as the Body of Christ ... by developing future leaders for our LCMS schools, revitalizing struggling and discouraged congregations, forming the future pastors and leaders of the LCMS and our international Lutheran partners, and much more ... as God allows. The LCMS is making the commitment that National Offering contributions will empower ministry work, excluding the personnel and administration costs of the LCMS, and will report to the church how all funds received are allocated. Every donation will be utilized by our Synod’s Offices of International and National Mission, as well as Pastoral Education (including the LCMS Joint Seminary Fund), for nonpersonnel and non-administration projects or programs. These are gifts for action and impact in the lives of others — joyfully given by those united “Upon This Rock.” Please join with others to support this triennium’s National Offering. Here in our congregation we will be taking the National Offering on a Sunday in June so please watch the Bulletin for more details. Worship and Music Notes The Endless Season of Pentecost In May, the Church celebrated the last portions of the “Festival” half of the Church Year with The Ascension of our Lord, The Day of Pentecost, and The Festival of the Holy Trinity. The Sundays after the Day of Pentecost and Trinity Sunday are called “Sundays after Pentecost”. You will see that in your bulletins and on the screens all summer long and into fall until we get to “All Saints Day” in November leading into the last Sundays of the Church Year. In the Gospel readings for June and July, miracles are performed and teaching is done by Jesus as narrated in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus raises the widow’s son, heals the demon possessed, sends the 72 out as the harvest is plentiful, tells us that Mary has chosen what is better, teaches us how to pray, and shows us what our priorities should be, to name a few. An explanation of the Pentecost Season taken from “Heaven on Earth; The Gifts of Christ in the Divine Service” by Arthur A. Just Jr.: If the festival seasons of the Church Year are about Christ, the Pentecost season is about how Christ has become a people. Pentecost is the season when fields become ripe for the harvest as the baptized grow and proliferate and mature in Christ. Sometimes the season seems endless, but that is precisely the point. As the Church moves towards the Parousia (the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ) with Christ present in His Church by His Spirit in Word and Sacrament, we already have a foretaste of the end. Pentecost is the time when the end is celebrated among us every Sunday, and the harvest is ongoing each time baptisms are performed and suppers are celebrated. This is not the end focused on judgement but rather on the eternal feast. Every Sunday is a celebration! As I prepare music and help to select hymns for the service, I cannot help but get excited for the time of worship. Every Sunday has new and meaningful lessons to be learned and Gospel truths to be applied, and let’s not forget, GRACE. Every time we come together to worship, we are in the midst of different circumstances and experiences. What might sail past you on one day will stick and strike a chord the next. It is amazing how the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts and speaks to us individually with words of comfort and encouragement when they are needed the most.

Thine the kingdom, Thine the prize, thine the wonderful surprise; Thine the banquet, then the praise, then the justice of Thy ways; Thine the glory, Thine the story, then the welcome to the least; Then the wonder all increasing at Thy feast, at Thy feast. (LSB 680:4) I look forward to worshiping together as we bask in the endless days of Pentecost. Daniel Reineke, Traditional Music Director (320)656-0963

“Sharing the Caring Christ With All People”

Grandparent Junction She is perhaps the most well-known grandmother in the Bible! I speak of none other than Lois, the grandmother of Timothy. Judging from what Paul wrote about her, she must have been one wonderful, faith-filled lady! She certainly had impressed the apostle Paul as being such as he wrote the following to Timothy: “I have been reminded of your sincere faith which first lived in your grandmother Lois…” I believe Lois models the essence of what being a Christian grandparent is all about and why God created grandparents in the first place! It is so that we might play a huge role in passing on faith in Christ to the generations coming after us. These words from Psalm 78 certainly underscore this: “W e will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord…so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.” Being that (a role model of faith as well as a teacher of faith) and doing that is a tall order. And the best place for those of us who have the privilege and blessing of being a Grandma or a Grandpa to start is in prayer. Pray that the Lord will enable you to model and pass on faith to your grandchildren even as Lois did. And pray for your grandchildren. Daily, intentionally, pray for them. And, let them know that you are praying for them! If you are looking for helps and resources for praying for your grandchildren, ask me. I’ll be happy to provide you with some. Jonathan purchased a home many years ago for $80,000. The home has appreciated substantially over the years and is now worth $420,000. Jonathan has decided to sell his home and move to a retirement community. However, he recognizes than even after using his $250,000 home exclusion, he will still face high capital gain tax from the sale of the property. Jonathan has a been an active member of his church for many years and would like to find a way to sell the home, avoid tax and make a gift to reduce the church's building debt. Jonathan: M y home has turned out to be a good investment, but now that my spouse is gone, I would like to spend more time with family. I recognize that if I sold my home I would pay high capital gains tax. I'm looking for a way to reduce the tax on the sale of my home and obtain a little more income for retirement. I don't need a lot to live on, but I do like to spoil the grandchildren. I also like the idea of fixed income that won't fluctuate with changes in the market. Jonathan called his church's planned giving counselor and discovered that he could transfer his home in exchange for a large fixed annuity payment, based upon his age. Because the home was extremely marketable, it could be sold quickly by the church, and Jonathan would avoid capital gains on the sale portion. His home exclusion could be used to offset the remaining capital gain on the income he received from the annuity contract. Jonathan: I decided to transfer my home to the church in exchange for the gift annuity and was delighted with the results. I avoided tax on the sale of my home and was able to receive a large annuity payment for my retirement. Best of all, because the payment was fixed, I didn't have to worry about market fluctuations. Now, I can spend as much time with grandchildren as I want!
