Dear Trinity friends in Christ, A long time ago (as in 1981) I was blessed to have a vicar (that’s a Seminary student doing an internship in his third year of the four-year program to become a pastor in our church body) at Holy Cross who simply loved Easter. He had a favorite expression which I still remember and use today in the days and weeks following Easter when people ask me how I am doing. As Vicar Tom would say, “I am basking in the afterglow of Easter!” “Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!” News just doesn’t get any better than that! Christ is risen…and He is who He said He was…the Son of God, our Savior! Christ is risen…and our faith is not in vain! Christ is risen…and we are forgiven! Christ is risen…and we too shall rise! It’s good to linger and to bask in the afterglow of that Easter Good News! Linger and bask in it as you come to worship each Sunday in the weeks following Easter. Linger and bask in it as you join in a Bible study. Linger and bask in it in your own daily devotions through your use of such tools as Portals of Prayer or devotional materials of your choosing. Linger and bask in it by creating time each day to walk and talk with your risen Lord in prayer. Let the joyful good news of Easter fill your heart and soul as you live each day in the hope and the promise that our Lord’s resurrection brings and gives! DCO CORNER: This month I’d like to invite you to come with me to attend A Creation Conference. How can Christians be sure that the biblical account of Adam and Eve is for real? That question will be among topics to be discussed at the fourth annual creation conference sponsored by the Society of Creation — “The Origin of Humans — Adam and Eve: Myth or Reality?,” June 10-11 at Concordia University, St. Paul, Minn. The conference will feature two keynote speakers: Dr. Robert Carter, senior scientist and speaker for Creation Ministries International in Atlanta, will lead sessions on “The Non-Mythical Adam and Eve” and “The High-Tech Genome.” Carter has a Ph.D. in Marine Biology. Dr. David Menton, a biologist, anatomist, author, researcher and speaker, in retirement, with Answers in Genesis, also will lead two presentations: “Three Ways to Make an Ape-man” and “Breath of Life.” Menton holds a Ph.D. in Cell Biology. Also leading a plenary session will be Dr. Gary Locklair, a computer-science professor at Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, who will address “Creation of Humans — Positive Evidences.” The Rev. Dr. Joel Heck, professor of theology at Concordia University Texas, Austin, and one of the conference’s planners, said this year’s event “will address, from a scientific perspective, one of the biblical topics now being especially challenged” in society — “the historical nature of Adam and Eve.” Heck calls the creation-evolution controversy “one of the seminal issues of our time because so much of the modern worldview is based on Darwinian thinking. That’s why we meet annually in a creation conference.” Full registration for the conference is $55 by June 1, and one-day registrations are available. Discounts are provided to participants from the same family or congregation. On-campus lodging is $40 per night. To download a registration form, click here. Worship and Music Notes

Hymn of Praise: Worthy Is Christ The Gloria in Excelsis (see December 2015 article) had been the only option for The Hymn of Praise in our Liturgy for many years. The Worthy Is Christ (This is the Feast) option was introduced to use as an alternate Hymn of Praise during the season of Easter and other feast days as it emphasizes the victory of the risen Christ. An excerpt from Heaven on Earth- The Gifts of Christ in the Divine Service, Arthur A. Just Jr.: “Worthy Is Christ” proclaims “the feast of victory for our God,” and so a legitimate question in this: “What is this feast of victory?” It is not, as some may think, simply a reference to the Lord’s Supper but to all God’s acts of table fellowship stretching back into the Old testament where God’s redemption is often accompanied by a meal. There is common ground between these Old Testament meals, especially the Passover, Jesus’ meals during His earthly ministry, Jesus’ Passover on the night in which He was betrayed, the breaking of the bread and opened eyes at Emmaus, and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in the Church since Pentecost. The feast of victory not only refers to the Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, but to both Word and Sacrament, because table fellowship with God in both Old and New Testaments and in our churches today involves three essential elements: the presence of God in Jesus, in His teaching at the table, and in the breaking of the bread. The feast always includes breaking open His Word as well as the breaking of the bread. And because we share this fellowship at table with Him now, “we have a foretaste of the feast to come” where we shall “celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.”

Pay special attention to the words from Revelation in our Second Reading during the Sundays of Easter. These texts are the basis for the words found in the verses of the Worthy Is Christ hymn of praise.

As we enjoy together the feast of victory, reflect on the enormity of what has taken place on Easter as the resurrection of Jesus “our salvation has procured.” Alleluia! I would like to thank our Pastors for their time and efforts in presenting the Word to us so faithfully and all of our choir members, soloists, and musicians who also gave so freely of their time and talents to assist in the presentation of the Gospel message during this season of Lent and Easter. May God be praised in all things as power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His. Amen! 2016 IRA Gift Opportunity Congress has just reinstated a law that allows you to make a tax-free gift to qualified nonprofit organizations such as Trinity Lutheran Church from your IRA. Under the recently reinstated law, you may move up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as TLC without having to pay income taxes on the money. Commonly known as the IRA Charitable Rollover, this law has been reinstated for 2015 and is retroactive back to January 1. Even better, the IRA Charitable Rollover has been made permanent for 2016 and beyond!

Important Guidelines

To take advantage of the gift opportunity, do not take a distribution and then make a gift. You must complete a gift to TLC by providing your IRA administrator with a letter of request for a charitable rollover from your IRA. Trinity can provide you with a sample letter and directions (see below) for submitting your request. A copy of your request letter should also be sent to Trinity so your gift can be properly credited. The annual gift limit is $100,000 to all charities per person, per IRA. You must be 70½ by the gift date to be eligible for the IRA gift opportunity. The gift needs to be made by Dec. 31, 2015 if you want your gift to qualify this year. The rollover gift will not be included in your income for income tax purposes. And the rollover gift is not tax deductible. If you have not taken your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. The transfer may be made in addition to any other charitable giving you have planned. Most gifts are tax-free. Please contact your tax advisor to confirm. The rules apply only to outright lifetime transfers from IRA owners and are not applicable to transfers after the owner’s death. If there is more than 10 years’ difference between you and your spouse, different rules apply. Please contact us for more information.

Forms and information available in the church office.

“More Than Enough” Planned Giving Stories for Christian Stewards Gene and Carol purchased stock in a small medical service company several years ago. The company has done well. A larger company is now discussing the possibility of buying the smaller company. Gene and Carol are looking for a way to save taxes. Gene: W e paid about $50,000 for the stock and it is now worth $400,000. If we were to sell the stock, we would pay a large tax. It looks like the company may be sold to a larger company. There is no sale agreement yet, but it could happen in the future. Carol: W e have always talk ed about tak ing part of that stock and buying a vacation home. I found a very nice summer cottage on a nearby lake. The price is approximately $120,000. Gene: W e check ed with our CPA and he suggested that we talk to a gift planner who specializes in charitable estate planning. We were happy to discover that we could transfer $280,000 worth of the stock into a special trust called a charitable remainder unitrust. The unitrust could then sell the stock tax free. Carol: In addition, we were able to sell the other $120,000 of the stock for cash. The deduction on the charitable trust saved enough in tax so that we did not have to pay tax on the $120,000. The full $120,000 was available to purchase our lake home.

Gene: T his was a wonderful arrangement. I am pleased that we were able to set up the unitrust to benefit our church in the future. And we now have income and are enjoying our lake home. Information and confidential consultation about planned giving options that might benefit you - such as a charitable remainder unitrust - can be obtained by contacting either Mr. David Priebe, retired business attorney (612) 508-4640; or Mr. George Miller (800)482-5022. Both David and George are Gift Planning Counselors for the MN North District - LCMS. 7

Due to the growth of our youth ministry, we are looking to add some support roles. If you have a heart for this area, we need your help! We are needing help with administrative, marketing, back office, advisory, etc. The time commitment is not overwhelming. We have some great youth leaders working every Wednesday night and Sunday morning. They are all volunteers and we need to step up and help them out. Please spend some time in prayer on behalf on this ministry. Contact Terry Kurash for more information. Excitement is increasing as we prepare for the National Youth Gathering. We have special Bible study time on Sunday mornings between services to help ready ourselves for the trip. Service projects, speakers, bible study, concerts, etc. are all a part of the experience. Looking forward to growing in our faith. The theme for next year is “In Christ Alone.” Watch for your opportunity to help support the youth through the next few months. All 9th-12th graders are invited to join us in the youth room on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm. Bring a friend. Make sure you are connected to the youth leaders via media of your choice. An Invitation to all Grandparents!

Are you interested in volunteering to help

It is not often in life that we are given a second opportunity to do something important that, when we did it the first time, we may have not done it exactly as we either had hoped or envisioned. Perhaps you feel that way now as you look back at your years of parenting. There was a lot to learn and a lot to do as parents, and many of us look back and see now some things we could have and would have done differently if we only had known then what we know now. Well, when you are given the blessing of being a Grandma or a Grandpa, it is God’s way of giving you a second chance to impact the lives of young children in your family. The only difference is, these are now your children’s children…a.k.a. your grandchildren! Come and join with other grandparents as we learn together how we might both bless and be a blessing to our grandchildren (and our children) as we study “Grandparenthood: More Than Rocking Chairs!” Pastor Dave will facilitate this class which will be held each Wednesday (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) and Sunday (9:15 to 10:15 a.m.) in April beginning Sunday, April 3rd and Wednesday, April 6th.
