Tunnelling works at Whitechapel Crossrail’s contractor BBMV is currently constructing the platform tunnels for a Crossrail station in Whitechapel. Tunnelling work will be taking place in three locations in September: Eastbound cavern: Work will continue on the eastbound crossover cavern (under Vallance Gardens) until 28 September 2014. These works will require breaking out of concrete along the length of the cavern. Although the breakout works will not be continuous they will be carried out 24 hours a day during September 2014. Breaking out works involve the use of the pecker (also known as the hydraulic breaker) to break through the concrete lining of the platform tunnel. Normal tunnelling will also take place 24 hours a day and will continue from the areas of breaking out up to the completion of the cavern. Escalator shaft (ES1): Breakout of the escalator shaft pilot tunnel (under Swanlea School) will be carried out during the week commencing Monday 1 September 2014. This work will only take place between 08:00 and 18:00 and will last approximately 6 hours. Normal tunnelling will also take place 24 hours a day and will continue for approximately three weeks.

Durward Street shaft (DSS) connection: The works to connect the tunnels to the Durward Street shaft (under the London Overground lines) will be carried out throughout September 2014. This will require the breaking up of the concrete within the tunnel which will take place between 08:00 and 18:00. These works will be intermittent during this periods. We will monitor noise levels associated with our works and will work within the permitted levels set by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of these works.
