THE HISTORY Upper Knockbreda Road is within the Cregagh area of Belfast.  The road was completed in 1967 and linked Cregagh with the Knock area on the outskirts of Belfast. The area is steeped in history from WW1 and WW2.  Montgomery Street and Alanbrooke Street, for example, were named after WW2 generals and Picardy Street and Hamel Street named after WW1 battlefields. The Cregagh area was chosen for a significant number of service men's homes due to the fatalities of the war who were from the locality. In the 1920s David Lloyd George built 150 "homes fit for heroes" in the Cregagh area.

FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM THE AREA VAN MORRISON was born at the nearby 125 Hyndford Street. GEORGE BEST grew up in the Cregagh Estate. TERRY HOOLEY, the punk rebel, was from East Belfast and his story is told in the film Good Vibrations. CLIVE STAPLE LEWIS (C.S. LEWIS) grew up in East Belfast. EDWARD HARLAND and GUSTAVE WOLFF started shipbuilding in East Belfast in 1791 and employed over 30,000 people.
