Facts and misconceptions about ADHD Submitted What you need to know about ADHD It is the commonest neurobehavioral disorder of childhood affecting up to 11% of school age children nationwide. The cause of ADHD is not known, but some things are evident: • It is genetic. If a parent has it, children are likely to have it too. • In utero exposure to drugs and alcohol put children at risk. • Children born with major heart malformations, and other problems that require surgery in the first year of life have a high risk of having ADHD. • Premature birth is linked to ADHD. • Other causes of low oxygen to the brain and brain injury are linked to ADHD • Environmental exposure to toxins, like lead are linked to ADHD. All these are being investigated as possible causes of ADHD. ADHD is not a new condition. It has been around for millennia. It was recognized as a neurobehavioral disorder in the early 1900s. It was not until the 1980s that it was added to the list of known psychiatric diagnoses. It seems like it is more common in the last 10-20 years, but this apparent increase is multifaceted: i) Children were not being diagnosed with it before, even though they may have had symptoms of it. Many of these children received the brunt of punishment for ‘not being able to control themselves’ and many developed additional behavioral problems because of this. ii) Parenting styles have changed. A recent study (Dr Neel, Vanderbilt University) has shown that permissive parenting in the first 2 years of a child’s life is more likely to result in behavior problems at 2 years of age. This is as
compared to children whose parents are authoritarian or authoritative in their parenting. Even without this study, it is very apparent that parenting styles have changed in the last 50 years and this is likely to be contributing to increased behavior problems noted in school age children. These behavior problems are likely to make the manifestations of ADHD more prominent. iii) The changing demands of childhood education in the last 50 years has made it very difficult for children with ADHD to fit into the mold of the requirements in the schools. If a child cannot sit still, cannot stop talking, cannot control their fidgetiness, they are more likely to fail in school now, than they did even 30 years ago. iv) Some children diagnosed with ADHD actually may have other behavioral and psychiatric diagnoses. This will often become clearer as they get older. The diagnosis of ADHD: Any child who has learning or behavioral problems, and who has impulsivity, hyperactivity and /or inattention may have ADHD and should be evaluated. Evaluation includes a medical exam, educational and psychosocial evaluations, and a developmental assessment. Family history of ADHD and psychiatric problems, exposure to drugs, alcohol and tobacco in utero, neonatal complications, brain injury, head trauma, medications, psychosocial stresses, and any current illicit drug use is all important information. A full examination is done to check for evidence of a medical cause of the child’s behavior. Behavior checklists are used to tease out ADHD from other neurobehavioral and psychiatric conditions.
ADHD is a parenting problem. It is not. As mentioned above, behavior problems in children may be a parenting problem. ADHD is not. Untreated ADHD often results in behavior problems, depression or anxiety. ADHD resolves when you grow up. It does not. Evidence shows that behavior interventions do help children learn to control their behaviors. Often, a combination of behavior therapy and medication is needed to help children overcome the impairements they have from the condition. Because of this, some children and youth will learn how to control their symptoms and are functional adults with no further needed treatment in adulthood. Many untreated, or under treated children and youth end up with poor outcomes in their teen years and in adulthood. ADHD just needs a firmer hand. It is very important to differentiate pure ADHD of the hyperactive/impulsive or inattentive type from other possible primary or comorbid conditions like Oppositional Defiance, General Anxiety Disorder, Depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Conduct Disorder.
All ADHD needs medication. No. Milder forms can be managed with behavior interventions and/or a change in parenting style that allows a child to learn how to deal with any impairments caused by the condition.
ADHD medicines will make my child an addict. No, they will not. The impulsivity that is part of ADHD often makes teens vulnerable to risk taking behaviors including drug abuse. Untreated ADHD is a very high risk factor for drug abuse in teenage years. So the most important way to prevent a teen who has ADHD from becoming an addict is to treat them adequately. This may or may not include medication, but will definitely include behavior interventions and good parenting. Parenting a child with ADHD may require unique parenting styles. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is now offered at the CAY Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
If you have a child who you think may have ADHD that is causing impairment, make an appointment with the child’s Pediatrician to have them evaluated. Untreated ADHD that is causing impairment puts a child at high risk for school failure, poor sibling and family relationships, impairments in social interaction, anxiety, behavior problems and depression

Oak Park Elementary kicks off Project Fit America program

lenged the track team and the teachers to join her in accomplishing the goal. Hill encouraged the students and said, “Remember what Miss King said . . . take what you learn here home with you so that we can have a healthy community. You are our future and our future leaders as well.” Coach Eric McMillan and selected fourth and fifth grades students cut the ribbon on the new outdoor equipment and demonstrated the physical activities for each of the seven stations.
Ellisville State School holds annual Employee Appreciation Program Submitted Ellisville State School recently honored 146 employees for their years of service. Employees with five year increments of service each received certificates and gifts of appreciation followed by a reception in their honor. Eleven employees had 25 or more consecutive years of service to Ellisville State School. ESS Director Rinsey McSwain congratulated the employees on their years of service and expressed her thanks to the staff for the great job they do on a daily basis in providing services to the people on the main campus and in the community programs. “I thank you for making their years at Ellisville State School positive,” McSwain told the audience. “Not only do we at Ellisville State School appreciate your hard work and dedication, but the family members of those we serve appreciate what you do.” Brenda Lomax, who works in the Jaycee Evaluation Center as a speech pathologist for the ESS diagnostic and evaluation team, received a standing ovation from program attendees as the longest tenured employee at the program. ESS Director Rinsey McSwain announced that Lomax has worked at ESS for 45 years. “She has seen some extraordinary changes during her 45 years of service,” said McSwain. “We are honored to have her as part of our Ellisville State School family and appreciate her hard work and long years of service.” Also on hand to commend Lomax and other honorees for their dedicated service were Renée Brett, director of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health’s Bureau of Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities; Robert Landrum, chair of the Mississippi Board of Mental Health; and Ellisville Mayor Lynn Buckhaults. The Employee Appreciation Program is made possible through employee fundraising efforts throughout the year.

By Linda Cranford The campus of Oak Park Elementary School was all abuzz with excitement as the school held opening day ceremonies to kick off the Project Fit America program at the school. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the installation of the new state-of-the-art outdoor physical fitness equipment and additional indoor equipment awarded to the school from a PFA grant sponsored by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. Guest speaker for the event was Eugenia King with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. “Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation has been working with the Project Fit America organization since 2004,” said King. “You guys are one of thirty-two schools to receive this grant and one of two-hundred and forty schools, statewide, to have this grant.” King added that one of the things she likes about the PFA program is that it encourages each student to set physical activity goals and work throughout the year to accomplish those goals. “That’s what it’s all about,” exclaimed King, “setting goals and working toward those goals.” In addition to encouraging physical activity with the new outdoor equipment and indoor equipment at school, the PFA program encourages physical activity at home and focuses on establishing healthy eating habits. King led the students in shouting out, “We’re building a healthy Mississippi!” Laurel City School District Board

JCJC schedules Most Beautiful Pageant
Submitted Jones County Junior College will host its annual Most Beautiful Pageant on Tuesday, November 7, at 7 p.m. in the M. P. Bush Fine Arts Auditorium. Eighteen contestants will compete for the title of Most Beautiful. Serving as the mistress of ceremonies for the evening will be Leighann Pacific. Pacific is a graduate of JCJC and Mississippi State University with a degree in communications and public relations. Pacific competed in the Miss Mississippi Pageant for two years holding the titles of Miss Riverland and Miss Red Carpet City. She placed in the Top 15 and walked away with nearly $6,000 in scholarships. An activist for organ and tissue donation, Pacific is an ambassador for the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency. Submitted Jones County Junior College’s Workforce College is offering a Commercial Truck Driving course at the Whitehead Advanced Technology Center in Ellisville. The commercial truck driving class will begin on Saturday, January 6, 2018, through April 7, 2018. Classes meet on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost of the course is $650 and prospective students must be at least18-years of age to attend. Before registering, all prospective students will need a valid driver’s license. After preparing for the CDL permit for two weeks, students will be required to have their DOT physical, drug screen and CDL permit to continue the class. The cost to receive the
permit, physical and drug screening are not included with the cost of the class. Students will learn DOT compliance training using the Delmar Tractor-Training Truck Driving Curriculum. Included in the training, students will learn how to do pre/ post-operational equipment checks, maintain hours of service log, properly fill out DVIR, and how to hook and unhook trailers. Additionally, students will get handson-driving time, CDL permit and license exam preparation.
