Councilman Jason Capers Sometimes waiting announces new mentoring program is the best decision By Linda Cranford During the Laurel City Council meeting held on Tuesday, November 7, Ward One Councilman Pastor Jason Capers announced the start of a new youth mentoring program for Laurel entitled Brighter Tomorrows. “The first service project, which was in Ward One, was a great success,” said Capers addressing Mayor Johnny Magee, City Councilmen, and the citizens attending the meeting. “We are starting with a simple idea; positive actions equal positive rewards.” The first project included cleaning up a lot on South 16th Avenue. “The trash piled lot on South 16th Avenue was left clean and beautiful with fall decorations to encourage residents to join in working together to make the City Beautiful a reality in Ward One.” The young people who showed up to serve their community on this first project were rewarded with a kayaking trip to Bogue Homa Lake. “All the young people who went, this was their first time to do anything like that,” said Capers. “They were excited, they were terrified, but they were all brave and got out on the water with us.” Capers said he was touched by a powerful statement one young man made when they were taking a break from paddling and were drifting on the water. Capers said it was a beautiful day, a slight breeze was blowing across the lake, and the water was lapping against the kayaks. Suddenly, the young man said, “I can’t believe how peaceful this is! I have got away from them all!” A chaperone asked who he had gotten away from and the student responded, “I have got away from the bullies and all the people hollering and fussing. This is so peaceful. I have got away from it all!” After telling the story, Capers add-

ed, “As adults, we all have the ability to pursue peace in whatever manner we see fit. We have the capability to try to create our own peace. But, so many of our young people are in whatever circumstance they’re in and that’s it. They don’t have the ability to go for a drive and cool off or take a weekend and go to a hotel or a vacation. They’re in whatever circumstance there in. While we have a beautiful city, there are many challenging circumstances.” According to Capers, Brighter Tomorrows’ youth will continue to do more service projects. Because of the generous donations, they will be able to add fishing equipment to the recreational equipment they already have. This will allow them to reward the youth with fishing trips as well as kayaking trips. To get the program started Capers sought the help of local businesses. During the meeting Capers distributed a handout which recognized and

thanked those who contributed. According to the handout, Howard Industries was the first and the largest donor. Funds donated by Suez Water were used specifically to purchase a 20-foot trailer to haul the kayaks. Additional funds donated were used to purchase 20 kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. Christ’s Church of Laurel made a monetary donation and allowed the use of their 180 student ministry van. Also contributing to the program were Richard and Gina Headrick and SCRMC. In the handout Capers personally thanked several people writing, “Personal thanks to Pastor Je Stephens, Carpentry instructor at Laurel high school, for his enthusiastic support and being a chaperone; Mr. Kevin Jones for his positive example, support, and being a chaperone; and Principal Tito Lanier for passionately supporting our young people and encouraging the development of mentoring programs in our city.”

By Dr. Bill Myers His will…..His timing……… Let’s be patient and wait on God. I wrote this devotion nearly three years ago. At the time of my writing, my crisis was big. As I look back, I realize that what I thought was so important has vanished from my mind. I barely remember what was so important at the time. The lesson here is to wait on God and be patient. Sadly, we have become a “now” generation that demands results immediately. This can cause us to make not-so-smart decisions. Learning to trust God, wait on His direction, and not “jump the gun,” will lead us to prosper in everything we do. If he closes one door, He will open a better one! God desires to promote, increase, and bless us! Almost eight years ago, Teri, Lydia and I lost our Steffan. My personal world was completely turned upside down. I literally couldn’t think clearly and had no business-making decisions that would affect my family later. I remember a few weeks after the funeral, we had just returned to church when a missionary friend caught me before service and said, “Dr. Myers, take my hand (I complied).” He then said, “Promise me that you will not make any major decisions regarding you or your family for one year. Promise me.” What?? I was completely baffled by his request, but I reluctantly promised. Friends, that promise was one of the best decisions I ever made. God had spoken to him and he knew my mind was like an emotional roller coaster. I wasn’t thinking clearly and probably would have made terrible decisions that I would have regretted later. Yes, that promise actually kept me anchored in God. I look back and thank my Heavenly Father for taking care of us! I encourage you to meditate on the following scriptures and begin to give thanks that He has the best plan for your life! He loves you! “Those (that’s us) who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:10. Are you praying and “trying” to believe for a miracle, but don’t think it will ever happen? Allow this scripture to encourage you! “With God things are possible” Matthew 19:26. Today, I choose to thank Him who takes care and blesses my family. I will believe and not doubt what He will do! He doesn’t need me to pry open a door. He can and will open the right doors for me in His timing. Many times His timing (we see them as delays) protects us from disaster, harm, and just ‘bad’ decisions. God is never late! He answers in perfect timing! “I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever” Psalm 52:8. When you’re not sure what to do, “don’t do.” Stop, and wait on God’s direction and timing. Trust your Father who loves you! Remember, He cares about you!

USM College of Business to honor Robinson as Alumna of Year at Sanderson Farms, Robinson has been proven leader, making history as the first female cost accountant, chief accountant, chief internal auditor, human resources manager and the first female member of the company’s Executive Committee. A graduate of Jones County Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi, Robinson earned an associate’s degree in business administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting. Robinson, Director of Organization Development and Communication at Sanderson Farms, is quick to note that the importance of a good education can never be understated. And she emphasizes that students at Southern Miss are afforded the opportunity to receive a “great education.” “An education at Southern Miss not only provides the basics of a good education, the college of business also facilitates both teamwork and innovation, and I believe these attributes, along with integrity, are indeed factors for a successful life and career,” said Robinson. “It means a great deal to me to receive the Alumna of the Year Award from the College of Business at Southern Miss. In so many ways I did benefit in my career from the opportunities provided to me. This award seems to bring that together in a full circle.” Now the third largest poultry producer in the nation, Sanderson Farms has grown significantly since Robinson began her career with the company in 1978. With nearly $3 billion in sales, over 14,000 employees and operations spanning five states and 14 different communities, Sanderson

Farms is a leader in the poultry industry. Since being named Director of Organization Development and Corporate Communication for Sanderson Farms in 2000, Robinson and her team have been responsible for training more than 27,000 employees, recruiting and hiring more than 130 full-time employees and 130 interns, mentoring more than 60 employees and reporting feedback from more than 3,000 employees to company management annually. She currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Jones County Junior College Foundation and is a member of the Board of Directors for the USM Foundation, the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research and the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as well as serving on the External Advisory Committee for the University of Mississippi Medical Center Neuro Institute and on the Business Advisory Council for the College of Business. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi and the Greater Pinebelt Community Foundation. Robinson’s past appointments include serving on the USM Alumni Association’s International Board of Directors, as President of the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees, as Chairman of Leadership Mississippi, and as Chair of the M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation. She was inducted into USM’s Alumni Hall of Fame and named a 2014 Honored Alumnus for Jones County Junior College. Passing the torch for holiday hosting (Family Features) For most families, the holidays are filled with time-honored traditions, many that have been passed down from one generation to the next. However, when the time comes for the next generation to begin carrying the torch for those treasured traditions, the transition can be a bit bumpy. For some, spending the holidays as a guest and not a host can be a bit unsettling after years of orchestrating the festivities. For inspiration, check out resources such as AARPAdvantages.com where AARP members can find savings on travel and gifting needs to help switch to the guest mindset. With the right approach, handing down traditions and helping your children host their first holiday can bring its own set of rewards. Hand down the heirlooms. Although they may be deeply beloved items, as you pass on hosting duties, go ahead and pass on the family pieces that make the holidays complete. Watching your children and grandchildren enjoy a bountiful holiday meal using the same china your own grandmother set out for the holidays is sure to elicit warm memories and still enable you to enjoy them as you create new ones. Similarly, if there are ornaments or decorations that have held a place of honor in your home through the years, gift them to your children so those same memories can be created anew. Shipping these treasured items ahead of time can ensure gifts arrive safely and securely before your arrival. Share the history. As your offspring begin taking on their hosting duties, be sure to explain the significance of any traditions they may not know. They may be aware that you always served a certain dish, but not realize it all began with a story involving a cherished loved one. This might also be the perfect time for the family to sit down together and research your history online. When you explore your heritage and learn about family members, everyone can feel more connected. Offer suggestions, not directives. When you’ve established a pattern for hosting activities, it can be difficult to watch someone else take a different approach, especially if you see mistakes being made that you learned the hard way. Just remember that you, too, had to learn the ropes and sometimes slight mishaps create funny stories to share at future family occasions. You might offer tips and ideas from time to time, but once you’ve handed over the reins, allow the new driver to do the navigating. You may find yourself the recipient of a few panicked calls - or you may not. Either way, remain helpful in your new role while

letting someone else establish theirs. Be a good guest. As you may remember, hosting a holiday celebration can be stressful. Do your part to ease the nerves by being a gracious guest. Offering to bring a small item such as the centerpiece flowers can go a long way. Also practice traditional etiquette, such as cleaning up after yourself and honoring household practices like

removing shoes at the door. If you’ll be traveling out of town, look for deals on hotels and car rentals available to AARP members at AARPAdvantages.com. Handing over the holiday hosting role can feel a bit unsettling, but remember that passing on that responsibility gives you the opportunity to enjoy the festivities from a whole new vantage point.

Submitted Longtime Sanderson Farms executive and former State College Board President Robin Robinson has been named the 2017 Boardman Alumna of the Year by The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business. She will be honored during a special ceremony set for Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. in Scianna Hall’s McDonnell Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. The award, sponsored through an endowment by the late Joseph F. Boardman, is presented annually during the college’s Fall Honors ceremony. Robin Robinson “The students graduating in December who are earning awards in the college have the opportunity to hear from an alum who has a distinguished career and record of service to the community,” said Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the USM College of Business. “I am particularly pleased that this year we honor Robin Robinson. Her record of service to our state, to the people of Sanderson Farms, and to Southern Miss is simply exemplary.” The daughter of a justice court judge and a USM accounting graduate, Robinson was born and reared in rural Mississippi, the same state where she would later serve as a community leader, education advocate and director for the only Fortune 1000 company headquartered within the state. Throughout her nearly 40-year career

Northeast Jones shuts out Laurel twice on Prepare your home for holiday guests pitch, Sykes and Figueroa with hat-tricks (Family Features) Welcoming friends and fit twin- to king-sized mattresses and act as a By James Pugh Cole Sykes threw his hands up in a celebration that only lasted for a few seconds. His goal, or so he thought, before the 30th minute in the first half against Laurel was made null by a referee. The foul call kept the game into a scoreless tie. In the 10 minutes that followed Sykes made up for it, scoring two goals - one in the 33rd minute and the other under the twominute mark - to give Northeast Jones a 2-0 lead at the half. Adding two extra in the second half, including Sykes’ hat-trick goal in the 64th minute, Northeast Jones shutout Laurel 4-0 Friday night in The Jungle. “Cole has come so far,” said Northeast Jones head boys soccer coach Matt Reid. “He misses from time to time, but tonight he was on. He played out of his mind. He finished everything and even the one that got called back. I was proud of that.” Sykes said his successful night was all on his midfielders. “We played a quality team,” said Sykes. “I had a lot of help from our midfielders, especially Jason [Garica] who showed out. But props to our whole team. They played good all the way around.” Garcia aided Sykes’ hat trick goal with an assist, his second of the game. “Our midfield created opportunities for Cole,” Reid said. “Cole is finishing, but it’s because of the attack from our defenders and midfield.” Two-minutes following Sykes’ hat trick, senior Malachi Harrison sealed the game with the Tigers fourth and final goal of the night. Senior defender Harrison Hodge assisted Harrison on the play. “I thought it was a complete game by all of our guys. We still made some mistakes and got away with a couple of things, but our back [defenders] played lights out.”

It’s also a good idea to ensure there are ample flat surfaces and coasters available for beverages so you can comfortably visit well into the night.

If a new guest will be joining, be sure to ask about likes or dislikes as well as allergy or dietary needs ahead of time. Make a point to show first-time guests around the kitchen early in the stay so they can easily find anything they might need, such as a glass for water during the night. The volunteer firefighting service is struggling nationwide, and in Jones County we have seen a decline in our number of volunteers. Oftentimes, only a few firefighters will show up during the day due to work and school schedules. This makes performing the VFD duties incredibly difficult, time consuming and laborious. Some VFD departments are better equipped with personnel as compared to others, but all have common ground in that the need for more volunteers is DIRE!

Night-time personnel is a little more available than day-time, but overall, the turnout for calls has been lacking and we simply just need more volunteers. Our current need for volunteers is EXTREME, especially during the day time.
