Perryman carrying the running load early for Tornadoes By James Pugh Not every day does a backup running back – currently a starter – get compared to NFL greats like Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson . . . one of those exceptions is Zias Perryman. “I knew what kind of player we had in the spring game when he made a play in the open field,” said Laurel head football coach Todd Breland. “He turned inside and looked for a safety to hit. I told him that day that it wasn’t illegal to avoid contact. “Perryman is extremely physical. He is freakishly strong with deceptive speed. He reminds me a lot of the old running backs, Bo Jackson and Herschel Walker. He is a hard-nosed football player.” Perryman joined the team late last year as a transfer from New Life Christian Academy in Magee. His only varsity experience, before this season, came against Wingfield. Perryman rushed for 18 yards on five carries. “I’ve known his family for a long time, especially his dad,” Breland said. “With him coming in, basically after the season had already started, we had to catch him

up on some classes. He had class all day long, so he missed a lot of practice time. But it was a good way to get him acclimated to the program. This year we have been able to turn him loose.”

“Our game against Callaway was my first game to touch the field [as a starter],” added the junior running back. “I grew up playing football, straight up until my eighth-grade year. After that, I

didn’t play up until last year, and that was just mainly practicing.” At any time during the offseason, there was no question on who the starting running back would be this season. And it wasn’t Perryman. Micheal Terrell, who led the team in rushing touchdowns last season with 14 as a junior, was the clear-cut favorite heading into the offseason. Then came what many considered a heavy blow to the offense moving forward. “When we found out the news about Micheal’s injury [to his shoulder that required surgery], it was a blow to us,” said Breland. “But we knew we had a hidden gem, so to speak.” The hidden gem was none other than Perryman. “We had all the confidence in the world in him,” added Breland. “We saw him in the weight room and knew the kind of talent he had. But of course, we had questions on how that talent on the practice field would translate on the (game) field.” Those questions were answered during See PERRYMAN, page 2

Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft speaks at annual William Carey University scholarship dinner Submitted Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft was the guest speaker for the seventh annual William Carey University scholarship dinner held Sept. 12 at Southern Oaks House and Gardens. In addition to Ashcroft’s speech, the dinner included music performed by the Carey Chorale, a student testimonial by Branden Lindsay, and scholarship presentations. With 370 people in attendance, the dinner raised $155,000 to be awarded as scholarships for Carey students. In addition to the scholarship donations, John Hairston of Hancock Bank and Joe Canizaro, developer of the Tradition community, each contributed $125,000 to the WCU School of Pharmacy at the Tradition campus in Biloxi. “The event sold out back in the summer with no publicity,” said Dr. Angela Houston, associate vice president for university enhancement. “Everyone was very excited to see and hear former Attorney General John Ashcroft, and, more importantly, everyone is remaining loyal to William Carey University; we have come back Carey Strong!” Scholarship Presentations More than 90 percent of Carey’s students receive scholarships or financial assistance,

and more than $9 million was awarded in 2016-17. The recipients of the 2017 endowed scholarships are: Kyra Mickens, a senior speech communication major from Hattiesburg, received the Roger Wicker Endowed Scholarship. Janell Goff, a senior business administration major from Moss Point, received the Phil Bryant Endowed Scholarship. Jonathan Watt, a sophomore elementary education major from Semmes, Alabama,

Anna Sanford, a senior biology major from Picayune, received the William Winter Endowed Scholarship. Melody Davidson, a senior elementary education major from Saucier, received the Trent Lott Endowed Scholarship John Ashcroft served as the 79th U.S. Attorney General and led the Department of Justice through the transformational period following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He reorganized the department to focus on its number one priority: preventing terrorism. Prior to serving as attorney general, Ashcroft served as a U.S. Senator from

1995-2001 and governor of Missouri from 1985-1993. He is the founder and chairman of The Ashcroft Group and the Ashcroft Law Firm, which focuses on issues dealing with integrity and consulting services, and provides compliance advice, legal counseling, and consulting services to world-leading clients, including Fortune 500 companies, multi-national corporations, and corporate executives are examples of a few of his clients. He is married to Janet E. Ashcroft and has three children and one grandchild. In keeping with the tradition of creating a scholarship in honor of the guest speaker, an endowed scholarship will be established in Ashcroft’s name. PERRYMAN, continued from page 1 this year’s media day scrimmage “Between the Bricks.” One play, in particular, stands out. On a run up the middle, Perryman blasted through the offensive and defensive line and met a linebacker who frantically tried to bring him down, grabbing the only thing the linebacker could grab, his facemask; Perryman never missed a beat, despite having his helmet ripped off his head. “I’ve been looking at it in this way; this is my time,” Perryman said. “You have wanted this, so make the most of it.” On opening week, in his first varsity start, Perryman carried the ball 15 times for 113 yards – an average of 7.3 yards

per carry – and did so against a Callaway defense that boasts two Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozens. “He is a tremendous kid,” said Breland. “He is a great kid; he is humble. If you don’t look at him, you won’t even recognize he is on the field. That is how humble he is on the field. You never hear him.” Perryman has 375 yards on 63 carries and a touchdown in four games played. When Terrell returns to the field this season, Perryman will still play a heavy role on offense according to Breland. “It’s just going to be a two-headed monster,” says Breland. “We also have Jaques Bester back there. For the first time in a long time, we are going to have three running backs that are very capable of carrying the load.”

Submitted Mississippi Home of Your Own (HOYO) will sponsor a free, one-day homebuyer education workshop Saturday, Oct. 7, for any residents in Forrest and surrounding counties interested in buying a home. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church at 2420 Hardy Street in Hattiesburg. The First, a National Banking Association, is co-sponsor of the workshop. Forgivable deferred loans based upon need are currently available to eligible borrowers with disabilities in the state of Mississippi through HOYO. More information about these grants will be available at the workshop. The Lord’s plans SCRMC hosting 5K run/walk are always the best By Dr. Bill Myers Are you feeling lonely? Abandoned? Do you feel forgotten by God? Was His answer the opposite of what you had wanted and prayed for? Have you cried out, “Where are you God?” or “Why God?” “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” Jeremiah 29:11. God hasn’t turned His back on you or forgotten your needs. He has plans for each of us that offer us hope and a future. This scripture in Jeremiah isn’t about God fulfilling our basic needs, but more about God prospering us in everything we do! We are His children and He desires to fulfill the plans that He has established for each of us. His plans to prosper us include restoration in marriages, job promotions, physical healings, financial, etc. He desires to answer each prayer. Nothing is too big or small for Him! “Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you” Psalm 9:10. Did you get that? He will NOT forsake us! We are not forgotten! He is with us 24/7. Friends, when we pray, we can be assured that He is listening and cares about every detail of our life! God doesn’t break promises! Sadly, the devil has convinced many Christians into believing that they aren’t worthy of having their prayers answered because of past sins. The devil lies! We mustn’t listen to his deception, but instead believe God’s Word that is full of promises. “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” 1 John 1:9. No matter what we do or say, we are forgiven. God desires to restore our lives greater than before, “if” we will trust Him. We are righteous! Reading and meditating on His word builds our faith in Him to believe what He can and will do for us! “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” Matthew 17:20. Today, do you feel your situation is hopeless? Do you feel forgotten by God? Be encouraged that God, who created you, has special plans to bless you! Friends, it’s ok to get angry or disappointed. It’s okay to cry. Don’t feel guilty. Release your emotions. Just don’t allow it to destroy you. Ask God to help you work through your various emotions and give you the strength to move forward. Even through your disappointments, I encourage you to keep your eyes on Jesus, confessing His Word with a heart of thankfulness, and expect blessings (answers) from God, your Abba Father! He WILL answer your prayers! That’s a promise! His plans are always better than ours.

7 ways to help hurricane victims (Family Features) Natural disasters come in multiple forms and can quickly devastate many lives in a matter of moments. While they all can cause nightmares for those affected, few are as powerful and destructive as hurricanes. That’s why, when hurricanes make landfall and wreak havoc, help is immediately needed and accepted by the people and communities impacted the most. Here are a few ways you can make a positive impact for those affected by natural disasters, specifically hurricanes: Start a Fundraiser One of the most potentially impactful ways to lend a hand after a natural disaster is to start a community fundraiser. This can be as simple as an online account accepting donations for a group of people and sending a large sum to a relief organization, or as thought-out as a large-scale event, like a raffle or dinner, accepting donations for entry. Donate Money is typically the resource relief organizations can use the most during natural disasters, and it can also be the easiest way for people to lend aid. There are typically many trustworthy organizations available to donate to during times of need. Promote Fundraising Efforts After you’ve made a donation yourself, spread the word to others whether it’s via word of mouth, social media or other forms of communication. Let friends and family know how they can join the cause. Volunteer While it isn’t viable for everyone, some people closer to the affected region can directly help those in need with physical help at the place it’s most needed. Whether it’s passing out supplies, serving food to those displaced or other means of lending a hand, volunteers are a valuable resource following natural disasters. Provide Shelter Another option for people looking to help who are closer to the devastation is to offer shelter, especially if they have family members or friends who have been affected. Assisting at places sheltering the displaced is another way to provide help, if offering space in your home is not an option. Give Blood Injuries can be unavoidable when hurricanes and other disasters strike. One way to help those hospitalized or otherwise injured is to donate blood, possibly saving lives in the process. Stay Persistent In the immediate aftermath of storms and natural disasters, the news cycle is dominated by stories of triumph and despair, and by ways people can help. However, the storm is eventually overshadowed by other, more recent news. One major way people can help after a hurricane is by continuing their support long after the storm has passed, as those affected will need assistance, supplies and donations for much longer than just a couple of weeks after the incident. As time passes, it can be helpful to continue donating money and supplies, committing to helping physically rebuild structures and promoting fundraising efforts. Find more ways to help those in need at eLivingToday.com.

Staying Safe Through a Hurricane While the immense power of hurricanes and tropical storms can greatly affect the lives of many in an instant, there are ways to increase your safety before, during and after the storm. These tips from the American Red Cross can help protect yourself and your family. Before * Put together an emergency kit, including basic but crucial items such as: water, food, a first aid kit, cell phones with chargers, contact information for family and friends, flashlights, extra batteries, medications, radios, copies of key personal documents, extra cash and maps. * Working with your family, create an evacuation plan for your home. This includes discussing how to prepare and respond to emergencies, identifying the responsibilities of each person in the home and practicing the plan. * As a storm is approaching, stay tuned to local radio or TV stations for the latest updates. * Be prepared to evacuate quickly, and ensure that your emergency kit and other necessities are ready. During * Stay inside. * If power is lost, use flashlights in the dark rather than candles. * If possible, keep radio or TV stations tuned in for any new or developing information. * Because waters could be contaminated with sewage or contain other dangerous substances, avoid contact with floodwater. * If instructed to do so by local authorities, shut off the power and water mains. * If you must be outdoors, don’t walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Don’t walk on beaches or riverbanks, and don’t allow children to play in or near floodwater. * Stay out of areas subject to flooding, such as underpasses, dips and low spots. * If you must drive and are caught on a flooded road with rising waters, get out of the car and move to higher ground. After * Communicate with family and friends to let them know you’re safe. * If you are evacuated, don’t return until authorities confirm it is safe to do so. * Continue listening to radio or TV stations for new or developing information. * Be prepared for continued rainfall and additional flooding. * Don’t use water that could be contaminated. * If possible, help friends, family and neighbors who require assistance, especially the elderly, people without transportation, large families and people with disabilities. * When returning home, stay away from buildings that have water around them. * Stay away from dangling power lines and report them to power companies. * For insurance purposes, take pictures of home and item damage. * When cleaning your home, wear protective clothing like rubber gloves and boots, and be cautious. * Inquire with professionals to check for roof damage and other more technical tasks.

Oftentimes, only a few firefighters will show up during the day due to work and school schedules. This makes performing the VFD duties incredibly difficult, time consuming and laborious. Some VFD departments are better equipped with personnel as compared to others, but all have common ground in that the need for more volunteers is DIRE!
