Inaugural News Letter

Greetings, This is the first issue of our Pointe San Luis News Letter. I have assumed the duties of Editor, reviewer, and author. I’m not only the editor, I’m also a subscriber as are all of the members in our current database that our property manager keeps. If you own property, you should get a newsletter. The format may change as we go along but initially there will be some regular articles and some new ones each month. The sections I will try to populate each month will be as follows: • What’s New – The latest and greatest around Pointe San Luis and surrounding communities from the aspect of how it will affect us • Did You Know? – This section will be to familiarize folks with different aspects of our community ranging from History to how our community association functions through our bylaws and deed restrictions • Contact information – Who ya gonna call. Contact information for committee leads, board members, police, fire etc • Projects and Special Interest – Ongoing projects within and around PSL • Upcoming events – What items of general interest are coming up. From Biker Rallys to Dickens on the Strand • FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions I’ll be looking foreward to hearing from you. If you have ideas for a news item please send it to me at rgheiberg@gmail. com. We publish by the 10th of each month. If you have a personal item to sell or an issue you would like to publish to the members of our community please let me know.

Web Site Information

Pointe San Luis has it’s own web site. It’s primary purpose is to keep reference information and records. For example you can find the following • Contact information for board members • Pointe San Luis Bylaws • Pointe San Luis Deeds and Covenent Restrictions • Board member meeting minutes * • Budget review information * • Pool lock codes * • Member contact information * NOTE: Those items marked with a * are restricted acesss information. All property owners can obtain access to restricted access information by registering on the web site. After Validating that you are indeed a property owner in Pointe San Luis the Web Master will then grant you full access to the web site. You can request to have information about property sales posted but although the web site has unrestricted access to most areas the web site has a limited audience. If you have updates that you feel are important to the web site or corrections to any information please contact the Webmaster – Rick Heiberg at [email protected]

Upcoming elections

The annual meeting of the property owners will be held Saturday Jan 20, 2007 in the Rosenberg Library from 2:30 – 6PM. The annual election of board members will take place at that time and nominations for officers will also be made. We must have a quorum for the election. A quorum is 10% of the members. There is only one vote per lot owned. If there is no Quorum the existing officers will remain in place until an election can occur at a place and time set by the board members. There are 260 members so approximately 26 property owners must participate either in person or by Proxy. A proxy will be mailed to all the residents and can be returned to CKM property management or to someone who will attend the meeting. The board selects the officers and do not have to be property members to serve. Members of the board can serve as officers too. The officers that are currently required are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The current number of board members is three. In order to change that number requires a vote by the members of the community association. You are a member if you own property. This year we will need a replacement for one of the board members the outgoing President who has served since 2002. Those wishing to serve as board members may indicate so at the annual meeting or by reporting to any of the officers to place their name in nomination at the annual meeting. Serving as a board member has no monitary compensation. The reward is in helping keep Pointe San Luis one of the best subdivisions in Galveston

Their advertising dollars make it possible for all Pointe San Luis residents to receive the monthly newsletter at no charge. No homeowners association funds are used to produce or mail the newsletters. The advertising deadline is the 10th of each month for the following month's newsletter.

Letter to Property Owners Rick Heiberg

I have served as the President of Pointe San Luis and a board member for four years. I took the job because, although there were lots of folks concerned about things that were happening in and around the sub-division there were not many people willing to put the time in to make take control of our destiny. It’s been rough at times. We don’t all agree. But I’ve come to know a lot of you. I’ve seen your kids play. I’ve seen a few of you get hurt. I’ve joined with you in writing email campaigns to close our beaches to vehicle traffic. I’ve seen storms take away our dunes and I’ve seen Mother nature slowly restore them even when the rest of the island was receding and the state threatened some 72 property owners on Galveston to have their homes removed from the beach. Our progress has been slow but steady. We worked together on our first real community project to build our walkovers which were a commitment required to get vehicles off the beach in accordance with the Galveston Beach Access Plan. The plan called for access points within 1500 feet of the beach where parking is available and the walkovers provided that. It truly was a community project and although there were skeptics lots of people came to help. Some a little and some a lot. It showed me that we have people who are smart, determined and don’t give up easily. The kind of spirit that I’m sure was required to make the country grow and prosper in spite of hardship. It’s alive and well. Since I am stepping down as President due to business and personal demands I’m not selling my property so I’ll be around. Anny and I chose Pointe San Luis because of it’s unique character. It’s a small community which we liked. You get to know your neighbors. That’s a good thing. The lot layouts maximize the views. I love being able to look out my window and see twenty miles of Galveston beaches and the San Luis Bridge and the Bay all from one spot. You know when you reach our subdivision when the road widens and rises beneath you. It feels right, like the road itself welcomes you. We’ll be here a while and hope to retire here. There are still plenty of challenges. Our pool facilities and signs are in disrepair. We have tax issues that threaten to take the property from those with fixed incomes. The landscape is changing physically both from the slow efforts of mother nature and the urgent efforts of our neighboring community developments. We may not like those changes but they are real and we need to watch both closely so we can act in a timely manner. Galveston is a harsh mistress but has rewards that we all value for ourselves and our families. Lets not take them for granted. Lets all play an active role in making sure that we are not washed along by the tides of change without at least considering what choices we have. We all have to take the effort and time to make sure we don’t lose the things we value to forces we were oblivious too or expected someone else to take care of. Thomas Jefferson said that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. It applies to more than freedom. You have to be a little crazy to live on a sand bar like Galveston Island. That’s one thing we all have in common. But there’s more. Keep contributing Keep involved. The rewards are worth it. ~ See ya around. Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc.
