P U S E H es l r a S h ID Saint C Have you ever been sitting next to someone, casually chatting with them? Talking about the weather, or the last movie you saw? Just passing time, waiting in line perhaps, or waiting for the bus. All the while, not realizing that this person has done something extraordinary. Something that you have never heard of anyone ever doing. Something you can’t imagine doing yourself, but might have dreamed of once or twice.

Dishing up America is a food tour, with a serving of history on the side. Ginger worked with six restaurants and six specialty shops to create two very different food tours on Historic Main Street of Saint Charles, Missouri. Additions to the tours are always in the works. The restaurant tour takes you to five very unique places, each with its own flair and delicious reasons to stop and visit. “In promoting myself and my own business, I promote six other businesses.” Ginger states. “Eleven, now, with the specialty shop tour.”

Ginger Gall CEO (Chief Eating Officer) of Dishing Up America Food Tours is one of those people. Never heard of her? You should, you really should. In 2002, this woman and her husband Ed, sold their home and quit their jobs. They took their kids out of school and began a fifty-four week adventure to every single state in the United States. Her children, all boys, were ages five, ten, and twelve when they started on the experience of a lifetime. That alone would make her the bravest, or maybe craziest, woman you would ever meet. They then packed the children into a truck with a pull behind travel trailer, where they would all live for the next year and two weeks. “This is something we wanted to experience, and we wanted to experience it with our kids.” Ginger explained. “We didn’t want to wait until we were retired. We wanted to do it while we were still young and could share it with our children. It was the best year of my life.” They dipped their toes in the culture of each state. They visited each state capitol and enjoyed the history, the cuisine, and the energy of each state. As she tasted and learned, a new dream started forming. Once back from their land voyage, finding jobs and buying a new home became a priority. Ginger went back to school and became a cooking school manager. With that, combined with her time spent learning about the food of America first hand on her trip, Dishing Up America Food Tours was born.

“Actually, you are promoting all of Main Street,” adds Barb Boschert. Barb is the history half of Dishing Up America Food Tours. As you walk the brick road of Main Street, Barb tells you the history of the buildings you pass with each step. She brings Old Saint Charles to life. She tells the stories of Main Street. Starting with the first state capitol building of Missouri in the Peck Bros. Dry Goods and Hardware building. She points out the architectural differences between the French and German built buildings. She helps you become a part of Historic Main Street, if even only for a while.

Tony’s On Main Street

Oh, and there is food. Tasty, wonderful, and often unique to Missouri, FOOD! The first establishment you enter is Tony’s On Main Street. There an energetic and friendly woman named Ann greets you. She will tell you stories about Tony’s as you enjoy a crispy, salty, and completely wonderful serving of chicken nachos. The nachos are covered in a melty creamy white American cheese mixed with chicken and red peppers, just enough heat to make you want more, but not bring you to tears. Ann, the manager, who has worked at Tony’s since 2002 explains that the restaurant is a family-owned business. It is run by a family for families. They all enjoy watching families return time and again. “Watching the families grow and the children grow up is one of the best parts of this business,” Ann remarks. “I just love being here on Main Street.”

Quintessential

Stop number two is an upscale place called Quintessential, often shortened to “Q’s.” Barb explains that the mosaic on the ground in the entry way is from the Palace Clothing Co. that formerly occupied the building. So, as you walk in be sure to look down, you are walking over a bit of the past. Quintessential has an urban feel. The decor is industrial, yet elegant, and done very well. While there you will taste their famous crab cakes. Executive Chef Eric Sohn spent months perfecting his crab cake recipe until he had it exactly the way he wanted it. He calls them “Q” Cakes, jumbo lump crab cakes with tomato ginger chutney, served on a bed of greens with a garnish of chipotle aioli. He wants you to make sure you take all of the components in one bite. The difference in the bite with and without the components is amazing, both good, but on completely different levels of taste. If you don’t like seafood, still give this at least one bite, but make sure to get the chutney and the aioli in that bite. Ginger will tell you that she has developed an allergy to shellfish, and that if there were a dish she would take a chance and eat, this is the one.

Lewis and Clark’s Next up, Lewis and Clark’s. Lewis and Clark’s is a Main Street staple. Dan Badock bought Lewis and Clark’s after being in business with his brother at Soulard’s Restaurant for twenty-eight years. Dan has worked in the food industry since he was sixteen years old and was ready to own his own restaurant. Since buying Lewis and Clark’s his mission has not been to change the menu completely, but to tweak it with his own personality. “We want to concentrate on quality and service,” he explained. “When I bought the building, it had a very eclectic feel. I wanted to give it my own feel, a historic but fun feel.” Which is exactly what you get when you walk in. You notice the canoe coming out of the wall and the Northern Pacific print celebrating Lewis and Clark’s expedition, which started in Saint Charles. At Lewis and Clark’s you will be served a warm bowl of white chili. You will have a hard time not finishing each and every last bite, even knowing you have three more mouth watering restaurants still ahead. The chili is full of tender white meat chicken, with soft white beans swimming in a thick flavorful sauce. Served with a side of jalapeno peppers and crunchy oyster crackers, you will be wishing for a cool day for an excuse to have more. (continued on page 4)

Magpie’s

Onward you will go to Magpie’s. In late 1700’s the Spanish Commandant of Saint Charles, Charles Tayon, owned the land that Magpie’s is on. The house was believed to be built sometime in that era, and was likely one of the largest homes in the area at the time. After many changes in ownership, including being owned by one family for 90 years, and one family of “white witches” the property was finally acquired by Rhonda Crane. That is when Magpie’s, named for her daughter Maggie, came to be. As you walk in, the warm feeling of your grandma’s house overtakes you. You just know that you will enjoy your time at this comfy house. Add to that the sumptuous Chicken, Bacon, and Mushroom Penne pasta you will be served, and you will never want to go home. The pasta dish is so creamy from the cheese, and so smoky from the bacon, every bite continues on the feeling of home you experience from your first step in the door. It is comfort food on steroids. You won’t know how you will ever find the will to leave.

Bradden’s

Leave you will though, as you still have dessert to discover. The building that Bradden’s resides in dates back to the 1820s. The tavern that was there at that time was a favorite of politicians and often used for off the record discussions and backdoor dealings. At Bradden’s you will be presented with what the locals call Gooey Butter Cake. It is a combination of butter, flour and sugar unique to the area. It looks like a lemon bar, gently sprinkled with a light layer of powdered sugar. It does not taste like a lemon bar however. It has a one of a kind sugary, sticky texture and flavor. The first bite will make your toes curl with joy. A hum of, “Mmmmmmmmmm”, will involuntarily emit from deep within as your eyes close to concentrate on the magic going on in your mouth. It is exactly as the name advertises, gooey, rich, buttery decadence. You will leave craving more, yet unable to eat yet another bite. A sinful conundrum that will be sure to bring you back another time. As your tour ends you will be given a fresh baked, perfect, disc of happiness, otherwise known as one of Grandma’s Cookies. You will try, and try hard to wait to eat this treasure in a bag. You may even make it as far as your car after saying your goodbyes to Ginger and Barb. Just like the perfect combination of these two ladies, introducing you to the flavors and history of Saint Charles, the perfect combination of flour, sugar, vanilla, and chocolate chips will leave you wanting more. Grandma says, “A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.” So, next trip, try the Main Street Specialty Shop Tour. Leave the kids at home for this one, though. It’s only for those 21 and over, as this tour includes WINE! Specialty shop tour Kilwin's, The Olde Town Spice Shoppe, Pop's Gourmet Popcorn, di Olivas, and Little Hills Winery Shop. The Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne in St. Charles is a beautiful and sacred place that honors one of the few canonized Catholic Saints who lived and worked in what is now the United States. Born in France in 1769, Philippine Duchesne was a passionate woman with a heart for missionary work. Even as a young girl, she dreamt of teaching Native Americans. She joined the Visitation nuns at the age of 19, but a few years later, convents were closed during the French Revolution, and Philippine was forced to return to life as a laywoman. In 1804, she was able to rejoin a convent, this time as a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Finally, at age 49, she embarked upon the 70-day voyage that would bring her closer to her dream on the Missouri frontier. In 1818, facing hardship and hunger, Mother Duchesne and four other Religious of the Sacred Heart opened the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, the first free school for girls west of the Mississippi River. She loved and served her students well and went on to start two other schools in the area, but always in her heart she yearned to serve the Native Americans.

“No greater saint ever died in Missouri nor perhaps in the whole Union.” -- Fr. De Smet, 1852

At the age of 72, Mother Duchesne was finally granted her lifelong wish by living with and serving the Potawatomi Tribe in Kansas. However, her failing health and inability to grasp the language caused her to return after only one year. She lived for 10 more years in St. Charles, where her mission had begun, and died in 1852 at the age of 83. Buried on the grounds, after three years in the grave, her body was exhumed and found to be miraculously intact. The canonization process began in 1909, and Pope John Paul II officially declared her a saint in 1988.

Today, the Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, which holds the holy remains of Missouri’s only Saint, stands on the property of the original 1818 frontier school. Designed in 1940 as an ornate cross-shaped basilica, the shrine was smaller and simpler by the time construction was completed in 1952. The interior was finished in 1966 with Missouri granite chosen to reflect the hard life the pioneer saint had lived on the site. The Shrine welcomes visitors seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Admission is free, though donations are accepted. Recently added placards and audio recordings allow for self-guided tours. Guided tours include the historic 1835 convent and museum, which houses memorabilia and artifacts from the early school days in frontier St. Charles.* Surrounding the shrine is the campus of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a private, Catholic elementary school serving grades pre-K through 8. It was the first of many schools to open in this country, and is today one of 24 member schools in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the U.S. and Canada. There are 139 Schools of the Sacred Heart in the world. “Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is often referred to as ‘a woman with a global heart’,” said Sr. Glavin, R.S.C.J., Head of School. “She was often drawn holding a map because she was always thinking about where she could teach the message of God’s love.” Both the academy and shrine are eagerly anticipating the 200th anniversary of Saint Philippine’s arrival in 2018. A variety of events including community reenactments, service projects, and the hosting of national and international conferences are in the works. “Many people, even non-Catholics, visit the shrine because it is such a historical site. So much of education today was a result of the work Saint Philippine did here,” said Carol Pfitzinger, Shrine Director. “But more than that, it can also be a very spiritual experience.”

If a revving 351 Windsor V8 gets your heart racing or a 1935 Studebaker Street Rod makes you weak in the knees, then add Fast Lane Classic Cars to your St. Charles itinerary. Fast Lane looks like a dealership because, well, it is. They usually have about 150 cars in stock or on consignment, and they buy and sell cars all over the world (yes, they ship!). But even if you’re not in the market for a choice 1967 Dodge Dart, do yourself a favor and visit anyway because admission to this museum-quality showroom and vintage collector’s paradise is free.

The first showroom is a real showstopper with about 75 classics, mostly muscle cars from the 1950s to 1970s, grouped by brand. The extensive Corvette collection is a must-see, as is the owner’s prized 1965 Shelby Cobra (you’ll find it behind the velvet ropes and signed by the American automotive designer Carroll Shelby himself). A hip, new event space on a mezzanine overlooking the showroom is available for private parties for up to 90 guests. The second showroom, in an adjacent building, has a more eclectic mix of automobiles. Here, you’ll find modern muscle, foreign, exotic, rod & custom,

and straight up pre-owned cars–all freshly serviced, impeccably detailed and ready to admire or own. The restoration bay is also located there, and you can watch through the window as technicians give old cars new life. Altogether, the complex at Fast Lane Classic Cars has four buildings (two for sales, one for maintenance, and one for detailing). It’s a large operation that gets larger each Memorial Day when they host the Cobblestone Nationals Car Show. This classic automotive show features 400-500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles on display and draws upwards of 10,000 visitors. With live entertainment, great food and lots of fun, it’s the second largest car show in the greater St. Louis area. Even though owners David and Laura Williams have built their business selling cars, that’s not all you’ll find here. With his great affection for all things vintage, David is a collector of automotive and other memorabilia of all sorts. So whether it’s an antique oak bar once visited by Al Capone, vintage pedal cars, gas pumps, neon signs, or banana seat bicycles, there’s something classic to enjoy almost everywhere you turn. Fast Lane’s enormous gift shop is also a treat. With fun T-shirts from every major car brand, prints, glassware, jewelry, key chains, and one of the best selections of 1:18-scale die cast cars in the Midwest, it’s the perfect place to find

something new for your favorite automotive enthusiast. And who knows? Should you fall in love with one of Fast Lane’s magnificent cars, with the help of their expert sales staff, you might just take home a really sweet souvenir yourself. After all, financing is available.

Old Post Office Restored as Co-Working Center for Startups OPO Startups is a Place for Entrepreneurs to Connect, Collaborate, and Create From 1909 to 1962, the stately granite-faced building at 119 South Main Street served as the area’s U.S. Post Office. Today, after a recent $3M renovation, it’s home to 40 startup companies that are hoping to leave their own mark on the world. OPO Startups (the OPO stands for “old post office”) is a 10,000-square-foot co-working center for newly developing tech and design firms. Founded by St. Charles native and tech entrepreneur Randy Schilling, the facility provides affordable workspace and access to mentors, potential investors, programming, educational resources, and a community of local entrepreneurs. OPO’s mission is to promote and grow the regional tech and digital startup community in St. Charles. Schilling, who owns and has restored four other buildings on Main Street and two others nearby, has always believed there is something special about St. Charles. “It’s such a unique place, overflowing with character and history, and there’s so much to do,” he said. “I’ve traveled to a lot of other cities, and you just don’t find many places as special as St. Charles.” As a working office space, most of the time OPO’s building is not open to the public. However, Megan McKissen, OPO’s Community Manager, gives free tours each Wednesday at noon. The tours offer people a chance to get inside, learn about old post office’s history, appreciate the meticulous renovations, and learn about the exciting things happening there now. “When we restored this building, we did a lot of things that most people wouldn’t even notice, like bringing back the half-round dormers to the roof that had been removed years ago,” said Schilling. “But to us, it was important to do these renovations as historically accurate as possible. And now, this building should be good for another 100 years.” Schilling’s own St. Charles history also runs deep. Born and raised here, he left for college and graduate school but returned to start his first company, Solutech (later Quilogy), in 1992 with a personal investment of $5,000. Under Schilling's leadership, the company grew to over 500 employees and 16 offices. After selling Quilogy in 2010, he went on to start Boardpaq in 2011 and bought the old post office in 2013. After two years and almost $3 million in renovations, OPO Startups opened in May 2015.

With room for up to 100 startups at OPO’s main building and the annex across the street, members are background checked and issued key cards. Letter Carrier-level membership, which includes one seat in the shared community room, begins at just $75 per month. Two other levels of membership, Postal Sorter and Postmaster, include either a dedicated workspace or office with 24/7 access for up to three people. An on-site gym provides members a way to blow off steam.

“You either have history or you don’t, and St. Charles definitely has it,” said Schilling. “The opportunity to have this beautiful and incredibly historic building, attract talented local entrepreneurs, collaborate on new businesses and ideas, and build community is pretty special.”

The energy level is always high at OPO, but it peaks mid-week for Startup Wednesdays. These regular weekly events, held at 5:30 p.m. and open to the public, rotate between the themes of Community, Founders, Mentors, and Funding. It’s a chance for area entrepreneurs to get to know each other, hear from leading advisors, connect with potential investors, and talk with accomplished business owners who were once in their shoes. Demo Days, held twice a year, is another important event for OPO memberentrepreneurs and gives them a chance to pitch their businesses to potential partners, mentors, and investors. Megan McKissen, OPO’s Community Manager, gives free tours each Wednesday at noon. The tours offer people a chance to get inside, learn about old post office’s history, appreciate the meticulous renovations, and learn about the exciting things happening there now.

Makes me drool just thinking about it! 8. Finding delicious jam, sweet bread or locally grown produce at the Lion’s Club Farmer’s Market. 9. Relaxing in the Streets of St. Charles AMC Theatre movie seats. They recline! And since you reserve them online, there’s no getting stuck in the front row. 10. Relaxing around the fire pit with friends on a chilly night. Good conversation and glowing embers.

Welcome to the Dark Side of Historic Saint Charles When Michael ran out of science fiction to read, he started reading about the paranormal. In his research he started matching rumors of ghostly experiences to recorded events. Saint Charles’ long history of human activity made it a natural place for the idea of paranormal activity to occur. Historic Main Street in Saint Charles was rich with activity and less than perfect people making mistakes that may lead them to try to rectify their poor choices in the after life, or so the stories go. When I first met Michael Henry of Saint Charles Ghost Tours, I had a flash back to junior high school. He reminded me of THAT kid. You know the one. The oddball, the one everyone thought was weird, and teased relentlessly. The one who, no matter what people said about him, did what he enjoyed, and ignored the detractors. I just knew Michael Henry was one of THOSE people. In other words, fascinating. Michael Henry is the owner and operator of Saint Charles Ghost Tours. Michael has a PhD in communication and is also an accomplished magician. This combination makes for an entertaining spinner of yarns and tales that may have you looking over your shoulder as you walk down shadowy Historic Main Street after dark. After spending your day shopping, dining and soaking up the history of Saint Charles, you should spend your evening learning about the allegedly spooky side of Saint Charles. Listen to the supernatural folktales of the lives that came before. You should take one of Michael Henry’s Ghost Tours. Saint Charles has had many people, living many lives, over many centuries. Dating back to Native Americans living on the banks of the Missouri River, through the Civil War, the Saint Charles area has always been active with humanity. It is one of the oldest cities west of the Mississippi. As an area ages, its stories grow and stretch into the near unbelievable. Michael has made it his job to learn about those who were, and who, as legend have it, may still walk among us in another form. “It is my personal quest to explore the things that are beyond us.”

One of Michael’s best assets is his ability in story telling. He brings the fantastic to life in a way that can make even the most skeptical critic question their lack of belief. He talks of the sounds of dogs barking and playing near the site where Lewis and Clark was said to have camped. Then explains how people claim to occasionally notice the wafting smell of wet dog. You can imagine the dogs bounding down the dark, Brick Street.

it be that she is what was setting off the detector? Or is it an entertaining story meant to stir the imagination? Saint Charles Ghost Tours is a fun, entertaining way to spend a night out with friends. Imaginations will run away and have flights of fancy as you imagine all of Michael Henry’s stories come to life. There are many stories in his arsenal and he loves sharing them in the thick black of night. Even if you don’t believe in spirits of the beyond, when he tells you the story of the little lost girl, you will feel the need to hug her and make her feel safe again. Are there really ghosts wandering along Historic Main Street Saint Charles when the sun goes down? Are sprits among us at all? Take the tour, maybe you will find out.

That is just one of the many stories of spirits continuing their existence on, Historic Main Street. “The best equipment a ghost hunter can have is his five senses,” says Michael. “There are three kinds of ghostly manifestations,” he continues. “Olfactory, the ones you can smell. Auditory, those you can hear. And complete manifestations, those who you can see, hear and smell,” he tells a group of people eager to listen as he spins his tales. “EMF (Electric Magnetic Force) detectors can detect energy being emitted by a paranormal, but they can also be set off by explainable reasons. I have researched and know where all of the explainable causes to set off an EMF detector are along Main Street, so I know when there is an EMF that can only be explained as being a super natural force.” Walking down Main Street, suddenly one of the EMF detectors, that Michael loans to tour patrons, went off. Then another. Strangely, enough, not all of the detectors reacted. According to Michael, that is a sign that the EMF detector has found an actual anomaly. “If it were an explainable occurrence, like electrical wiring, all of the detectors would go off.” He told the story of a little girl who died in a fire in the building. To eat Donna Hafer’s coconut cream pie is to taste a slice of heaven, and to talk with Donna about Main Street St. Charles is to get a slice of insider history at its finest.

people and “played a lot of bridge.” And with a heart for hospitality and a genuine love of people, Hafer and some of the other members formed their own Newcomers Club in St. Charles.

Hafer works six days a week at The Mother-in-Law House, a restaurant she’s owned for 35 years. With great affection, she speaks of her many memories of early St. Charles, the creation of the now-bustling federally registered Historic District, and the wonderful people she’s met along the way. But she makes no bones about it. “Main Street used to be a slum,” she said.

“St. Charles was a sleepy little town back then, but for 20 years, we volunteered doing all kinds of things,” she said.

“There were a few businesses, but there were also bums in the doorways. I had a wonderful friend, Mrs. Tschudin, who had an antique shop down here. She taught me so much. She always said, ‘you just need to buy a building and fix it up.’ One day, she called and said there was one for sale across the street. I didn’t think I would be able to get a loan because the street was deteriorating, but Mr. White at the bank told me ‘it will be what you make it.’ And he was right.” Born “a poor country girl” (she won’t say what year), Hafer came to St. Charles years before on a scholarship to attend Lindenwood College for Women (now Lindenwood University). “I was so homesick that first year, I thought I’d die. I wasn’t going to come back. But my teacher, Ms. Lindsey, came all the way from St. Charles to our farm in Illinois to tell my parents I should continue my education. I went back and was never homesick again.” While a student at Lindenwood, Donna met Ralph Hafer. The two fell in love and married on campus the day after she graduated, and she’s called St. Charles home ever since. In a relatively new town with a new husband and new job as a teacher, Hafer joined a Newcomers Club nearby. There, she met a lot of new

Still teaching when she bought her first building, a maintenance man from the school helped her with renovations. “That building was like an onion,” she said. “There were layers of things that had been added over the years. I had always thought there should be scalloped trim on the outside, and as we peeled everything away, sure enough, there it was!” In her building, Hafer ran several businesses of her own over the years including a dress shop, beauty shop, and cookie and candy shop. But her transition into restaurateur came when her good friend Emily fell in love. “Emily owned The Copper Platter at 625 S. Main, and it was the best restaurant in town,” said Hafer. “In 1979, a man came around looking for extras for the TV show The Chisholm’s that was going to be filming in St. Charles. “I asked, ‘Can I be in your show? I have antique clothing,’ and gave him my card. He agreed and Emily and I both ended up as extras, along with almost everyone else from town! While filming, Emily fell for one of the leading men, and when he asked her to join him in California, she said yes. That’s when I asked to buy her restaurant.” Once in the business, Hafer admitted, “I didn’t know what I was doing! Luckily there was a great server there, Betty, who helped me.” Shortly after jumping into the restaurant business at The Copper Platter, another restaurant across the street came up for sale. Mr. House who was Lindenwood’s Director of Food Service and whom Hafer knew from planning parties together was selling it. It was The Mother-in-Law House, and she bought it. That was 1981. Mr. House had named restaurant The Mother-in-Law House because, well, that’s what it was. “There used to be a brick wall that ran down the middle of the house, dividing it in two,” said Hafer. “The sides were nearly identical but one had steps for an upstairs living space for a family. While there’s only one front door now, we did find an old photo that showed the building with two front doors.” With the help of her two children, Hafer ran both restaurants at the same time. “It was a lot! But it was good for them. They learned how to work.” Hafer, who closed The Copper Platter in 1986 is quick to give credit to others for her success, even when it comes to her now-signature pies.

Whether you are looking for a place for a long lingering walk, the feel of the breeze on your face as you casually bike along, or the challenge of the steep hills of a mountain bike trail, The Katy Trail State Park has what you are looking for. The Katy Trail State Park is the longest and narrowest state park in the United States and it is right here in Missouri. Covering 240 miles from Machens to Clinton, 66 miles of it in Saint Charles County alone. The Katy Trail was built on the former railroad right of way of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad. Local residents who built their towns and lives along the route of the railway affectionately called the railroad The Katy. This is where the state park derives its name. When the railroad took the tracks out

of service, many of the towns fell on hard times, a few becoming ghost towns that still stand empty today. With the development of The Katy Trail State Park many towns have found new life, catering to cyclists and tourists alike. New businesses have found their way to the small river towns, and the sounds and faces of thriving families have returned. The Katy Trail was made possible by the National Trail System Act, which allows no longer used rail corridors to be used for

recreational purposes. A 2.2 million dollar donation by Edward D. Jones Jr. and his wife Pat allowed for the purchase of the land and construction of the trail. Mr. Jones loved the outdoors and was excited to replicate a rail to trails experience he had had in another state right here in his beloved Missouri. The State park at the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers in Saint Charles is named the Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park in honor of the couple. The Katy Trail has appeal to teachers as well as cyclists. At the Natural Resources In Missouri office on Main Street, you may be lucky enough to meet a volunteer named Nancy Williams. Nancy is a former teacher

who loves The Katy Trail. “I would bring the science club to The Katy Trail. We would walk or ride it. The kids loved it, they would see little snakes and turtles. It made a good nature study.” “The Katy Trail is one of Saint Charles best kept secrets.” It opened in 1990, but was affected by the severe flooding in 1993. Every year there is a bike ride that starts at one end and ends at the other. It is only open to 300 riders due to the width of the trail, but people stagger their starts and stops so their isn’t crowding. They are

assisted in transporting their camping gear from stop to stop, the ride takes five days. The towns along The Katy Trail welcome the riders warmly with bands and vendors. It is a party atmosphere that the cyclists repay by shopping and eating. Along the trail are the beautiful bluffs of Missouri River. The limestone cliffs and rolling hills offer unique beauty found nowhere else. In the summer the perfume of the trees and long grass surrounding the path, invite you to stroll along The Katy Trail. The shade envelops you and encourages you to continue walking. In the fall the colors of the season attract artists and photographers to capture the allure and history of the trail. The winter brings silence and un-obscured views of the river. Snow covered bluffs glisten in the sunshine helping you to forget about your cold toes. Winter brings a magic that few see, but those that do, never forget. No matter the season The Katy Trail State Park

is always open inviting adventurers of all types to encounter its one of a kind culture.

Bike Stop Cafe & Bike Stop Outpost If you are an avid cyclist you will find challenge in the many parts of the trail, beyond just the length. According to Tony Caruso of Bike Stop Cafe and also the Bike Stop Outpost, mountain biking trails can be found right within the city of Saint Charles. “I prefer free riding,” he explains, “off the beaten path, the rougher the better. My favorite parts of the trail are right here locally in St. Charles.” Tony helped start the idea of mountain biking trails in the region. His cafe, Bike Stop Cafe, co-owned by Jodi Devonshire is an extension of not only their love of biking, but also their love of community and their healthy life style. The foods are healthy low calorie and low fat. They have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, and prefer to use organic, locally produced ingredients. The food is very tasty and filling. “I’ve had people come in and say that they have been dreaming of the Juarez Wrap” a spicy wrap filled with eggs, a homemade spicy ro-tel, and cheddar jack cheese. “ He said he just had to come in and get one for breakfast,” said Jodi. Jodi also created a peanut butter ball to die for. “My kids wanted to buy snacks from the vending machines at school like their friends. I told them that I would make them a snack that was even better that they could take to school with them, and that’s when the peanut butter ball was born.” ‘I’ve been offered money for the recipe,” she beamed proudly. “I’ve been offered nights out drinking, I’ve been offered some pretty strange things for the recipe. People have even tried to figure out the recipe on their own.” “It has been something trying to keep the recipe secret,” Tony added. Along with the deliciousness found at the Bike Stop Cafe, the duo also owns the Bike Stop Outpost, within walking distance of the Cafe. They started finding that they didn’t have enough room at the Cafe to offer the biking gear

they wanted to offer. The biking side was growing, as they rented bikes to over a 1000 people last season. They found an open storefront on Historic Main Street, which rarely happens, and scooped it up for the Bike Stop Outpost. Walking into the Bike Stop Outpost isn’t like walking into any other bike shop. “As a woman cyclist,” Jodi started, “I was tired of walking into bike stores and finding only a very small section for women. My store is very woman centric. We are the only store that sells Chamois Panties, a padded bicyclists’ panty. It is a company owned by women and started with crowd funding. Knowing the story behind my products is important to me. And just because women cycle, doesn’t mean they want to dress like a man.” “When I first walked in, once product started arriving, I looked at Jodi and said, I didn’t know we were opening a woman’s bike store.” Tony joked.

“We still have plenty of things for men too, but yeah I wanted a woman’s feel about the store.” Along the trail are the beautiful bluffs of Missouri River. No matter the season The Katy Trail State Park is always open inviting adventurers of all types to encounter its one of a kind culture.

“One Stop” Katy Bike Rental I met Todd White on a cold January day and by the time I left his shop, Katy Bike Rentals in Defiance, Missouri, I was ready to hop on a bike and ride the entire 66 miles of the Katy in St. Charles County. His infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors and cycling, keeps him looking for new opportunities to expose more people to Katy Trail State Park. The “One Stop” shop Katy Bike Rental also offers bike tours on The Katy five times a year and are a part of the Road Scholar educational adventures. The nearly all-inclusive trips include lodging, seventeen meals, expert led lectures, field trips and hands on experiences. Many start or end in the St. Charles area. I’ve found that there is a lot to learn about the Katy Trail and

surrounding communities. These trips are an uncommon and enjoyable way to immerse in the history of The Katy.

snack. He has been known to jump into water without warning, so we kept him carefully tied to the inside of the raft.

“The bike shop is probably about 40% of our business. It is what you see when you drive up, but it is only part of what we do.” He continues, “we offer not only bike rentals, repairs and shuttles but also organize trips where we plan out all the stops, lodging and everything. We do five trips along the trail every year. Starting in 2017 we are looking forward to starting an arts immersion trip that involves local artists. Not only will people get to meet and observe the artist, but also create and interact with the artist. We are very excited about it.” The zeal in his tone had me ready to sign up. “We have so many very good artists around here. To be able to highlight them and their work, and show off what the Katy Trail area has to offer, it’s just a win, win.”

We leisurely made our way along the gorgeous bluffs that towered above us. The beauty overwhelmed me as the midday sun created shadows and highlights that accentuated the textures of each rocky cliff.

“We also have our Peddle Paddle. We work with Missouri River Excursions on these. You put in on the river at Defiance, raft, Kayak or canoe to downtown St Charles, have lunch, enjoy Historic Saint Charles, then hop on a bike and peddle back on the trail.” I loved the idea of a day on the river and then a nice breezy ride back. What better way could there be to spend a day with friends, family or that special someone. As I talked to him I realized I was talking not just to an expert on the Katy Trail, but someone who has a genuine love for it and wants share that love with others. “The parts of the trail where you are down close to the river are probably my favorites, it’s really pretty along there.” Todd was featured in a PBS special, Where the Rivers Run, which can be seen on YouTube. The passion he has for the trail seeps out into the documentary, but is multiplied exponentially when meeting him in person. Even the most stubborn couch potato could be nudged onto a bike for at least a mile or two by this man.

Missouri River Excursions Floating down the Missouri River is a relaxing, calming journey that I will never forget. Sick and tired of the buzzing of cars in the city, and my

smartphone yelling at me with one text after another, my family and I ventured to Defiance, Missouri and headed to Missouri River Excursions. There we rented a raft, so we could all ride together and put into the Missouri River for the day. They also had canoes and kayaks available, and a friend that came with us opted for a kayak as she was a bit more adventurous then the rest. We put our lunches that we had gotten to go, at a local restaurant, into the cooler we brought along. We stored the cooler and the beanbag yard game we brought along on the raft. After putting on the life jackets that were provided, and a few lessons on guiding the raft, we started our adventure. The calm river beneath the raft floated us down the river, gently rocking us as we went. The kids watched a bald eagle as it flew slowly above our heads. We joked that we better keep an eye on our dog so he didn’t become a midday

Along the bends there were sandbars that gently jutted out from the bank. We stopped for lunch on one of the sandbars. We set up the beanbag game and got out some fishing equipment we had brought along. We relaxed, ate lunch and sat in the river water staying cool. The game of beanbags took over the fishing as a fierce but friendly tournament erupted. The kids looked for shells and crawdads, and scared a frog or two. We cleaned up, and packed the raft. It was hard to leave our little piece of heaven to continue our trip down the river. Once we were all back in our floats, sporting our life jackets once again, we finished riding down the river. The rest of the river was as beautiful as the beginning. As we floated into the city of St. Charles, I felt a little sad that this perfect day was about to end, but excited to wander through Historic St. Charles for a bit. The friendly staff of Missouri River Excursions pulled the raft from the river and loaded it onto the trailer for its trip back to Defiance. We lumbered into the van, the kids talking rapidly about the exciting day on the river. They talked and giggled all the way back to Defiance.

Trail Smokehouse For dinner we went to the Trail Smokehouse, owned by the same people who own Missouri River Excursions. We were all starving and devoured the BBQ Nachos with gusto, while we waited for our entrées. For the grown ups there was an abundance of ales and IP beers to choose from and wines for those who prefer such things.

The food was marvelous, served by an attentive wait staff. The bourbon caramel cornbread that came with our meals was warm and tasty. The pulled pork platter came with two sides. The pork was sweet and smoky. It melted in your mouth with each bite. I chose the green beans with smoked bacon for one side. It reminded me of home but better. The thick creamy cole slaw had just a hint of tang that tickled the tongue with anticipation of the next bite. Both were fabulous next to the pulled pork. The kids loved the trail sauced corn on the cob, and devoured the homemade pie they had for desert. I enjoyed the Salted Caramel ice cream topped with smoked bacon and bourbon caramel sauce. The salty sweet combination melted on my tongue, followed by the crunch of the smoky bacon. It was a perfect end for a perfect day. We all left way to full. “Good thing we didn’t eat before getting on the raft,” said one of the kids. “We would have sunk it!”

Historic Missouri Wine Country Historic Missouri Wine Country, were there ever four words that that screamed “girls weekend” more than those. Gather up your friends, rent a room or two in Saint Charles and head out to wine country. How much better could life be? Whether you drive from vineyard to vineyard or rent a bike and leisurely peddle from one to the next on the Katy Trail, your day will be relaxing and full of food wine and fun. You will find yourself in the middle of some of the most beautiful country in Missouri. The river runs through the bluffs and hills creating one of the best grape growing regions in the Midwest. The slopes above the riverbanks fall slowly and gently creating land with perfect lines for grapevines to thrive. The land is full of the aromas and richness that infuse into the grapes to develop the distinctive flavor that only St. Charles County grapes have. Wine tastings await you and your friends. Each winery has their own unique style and secrets to produce their signature and award winning wines. Take your time as you inhale the perfume of each vintage and then taste. Do you like a sweet white? Try Montelle’s Himmelswein. A refreshing, fruity wine with a green apple tang that will wake up your

taste buds and leave them asking for more. You prefer a drier red? Try Sugar Creek Winery’s Michael’s Signature Red. A full-bodied red, with a hint of chocolate and cherry, perfect for a romantic dinner. Besides the wines and food, there are views. The bluffs and the river are just the start. The autumn leaves gently blend together to make a perfect backdrop for group selfies and entertaining evenings listening to live music. Most of the wineries have beautiful outdoor balconies where you can sit and wile away the hours during a warm summer afternoon.

Many local artists gather every year for competitions to paint the Katy Trail area. Artists abound in this beautiful county of St. Charles. You will find their work for sale in many shops in the area. Painters, metal artists, woodworkers, no matter what style or form you prefer, you will find Wine Country offers fabulous shopping opportunities. There will be something that you will not be able to live without. Going home empty handed is just not possible. Along with the wineries, shopping and outdoor recreation are historical sites and museums. One of the most popular is the Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center in Defiance. Take a walk among these 19th century buildings. Feel the rich history that

surrounds you in the dozen buildings moved from within fifty miles of the site and restored to historical accuracy. The limestone home, original to the property, was owned by Nathan Boone, Daniel Boone’s son, though Daniel Boone spent more time there than at his own home which once stood about 4 miles away. This is the place where Daniel Boone took his last steps of the adventure that was his life. Walking in his footsteps is an inspiration to find your own adventure. Your “girls weekend” in St. Charles County and Historic Missouri Wine Country will undoubtedly end too soon, so be sure to plan more than one weekend and enjoy all that the four seasons have to offer.

“There was a gal named Reni Zurwycki,” tells Hafer, “who lived in down the street in Stone Row. Reni made wonderful pies, so I hired her. Reni would get here early so no one could watch her work because she didn’t want to share her tricks. But before she died, Reni taught me how to make her recipes, so our pies are a tribute to her.” While Hafer’s had many interests in her life, perhaps the one she’s most enjoyed is collecting Haviland china. Haviland is hand-painted porcelain china that was made in France in the late 1800s for the American market, and it’s quite collectible. Hafer’s love of Haviland began back in the Newcomers Club days. “I called on a lady whose husband worked for ACF. She was very lonesome and we became good friends. She didn’t drive so I would take her grocery shopping. One day while we were out, there was an auction down the street, and I bought my first set of Haviland. The woman selling it was so sad, so I promised her I would take good care of it.” Living up to that promise, Hafer learned all there was to know about the china and even joined the Haviland Collectors International Foundation. And as her knowledge and collection grew, she opened the Haviland Museum. Located in the same building as her former Copper Platter restaurant, the museum was open from 1996 to 2016. “Having the museum was a dream of mine,” she said. “We’ve had a wonderful run, but now it’s time to do something else.” Hafer has no idea how many pieces of Haviland she owns, but it’s probably thousands. Her collection includes a set that once belonged to Judy Garland. And while it’s “terribly hard to part with,” she said, she’s been selling pieces here and there to other collectors around the world. From near slum and now-bustling Historic District, Hafer reflects on the many people who have worked to make Main Street what it is

The Mother-in-Law House Restaurant 500 S. Main St. St. Charles, MO 63301 636-946-9444 www.motherinlawhouse.com www.facebook.com/motherinlawhouse

today—the people who stripped away gaudy 60s-style renovations to reveal the true heart of Missouri’s first and largest historic district. Hafer herself is part of one of the most famous group of preservationists, a trio often referred to as “The Three Muskateers,” which included Archie Scott and John Dengler. It was 1965 when Archie, who worked as the art director at KTVI-TV in St. Louis, fell in love with Main Street and moved his family to their new home on South Main Street. John moved his family tobacco shop, which is believed to be the oldest continuous tobacco shop west of the Mississippi, from St. Louis to St. Charles in 1980. “Archie and John came to Main Street, and they were my buddies,” said Hafer. “We would dream about how wonderful Main Street could be. We worked with some wonderful mayors, but even when we hit a snag, we found a way to get things done. Archie and John gave everything they had to Main Street. They died in 2008 just 10 days apart. I miss them both terribly.” In all her years of welcoming visitors to Main Street, Donna believes the history is what draws people to St. Charles. “I’ve seen a lot of change over the years, but Main Street still has that small-town feel,” she said. “It’s the architecture and the people. Many of the shops here are run by the owners. No one is friendlier or cares more, and that caring comes through.” On most nights, Donna can be found caring in her own unique way, walking the dining room and serving up extra muffins or candied carrots. “With this restaurant, I touch the world every day,” she said. “It’s an honor to welcome our customers and say ‘hello, we’re glad you’re here.’” From one building purchased decades ago with a vision of what could be, Hafer continues to be a champion for Missouri’s largest and oldest historic. “Like a good quilt, all the little things come together,” she said. “I’ve had more fun in my life, and I love Main Street with my heart and soul. I’m so proud of it. It’s been special.”

The Mother-in-Law House Restaurant is open six days a week serving lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. and dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Perhaps most famous for their chicken salad, The Mother-in-Law House also offers vegetarian and gluten-free options. And absolutely everything, down to each individual side dish on the evening salad bar, is homemade.

Festival and Events DISCOVER the Foundry Art Centre The Foundry Art Centre resides in what was once a train car factory; a 1940’s structure formerly owned by American Car & Foundry. Rather than demolish the 36,800 square foot building, the community of St. Charles worked tirelessly to complete a 2.2 million dollar renovation and opened the regions’ premiere, interactive, interdisciplinary art Center in the spring of 2004. As the bridge between Main Street and Frenchtown, the Foundry is the Art & Cultural anchor of two historic districts in Saint Charles. As a vibrant home to the arts, the Foundry raises awareness and appreciation of the arts throughout the region. Alive with activity, the centre’s programming reinforces the importance of the arts and helps ensure that arts and culture remain vital. Artists, patrons, young people, and the community at large continually find new ways to interact at this unique facility.
