In honor of the Vista Oaks annual Egg Hunt, we thought you may want to know some trivia of the history of the Easter egg. The word Easter comes from the Norse word “Eastar or Ostara and is related to the pagan goddess Eostre. Eastar and Eostre are associated with new life and spring time. The egg complimented “Easter” since it too is a symbol of new birth for several cultures around the world. Pope Gregory the Great ordered his missionaries to use old religious sites and festivals to absorb them into Christian rituals. Easter was then used in celebration of the resurrection. Easter Egg rolling contests were brought to the New World by European settlers. Dolly Madison started the Easter Egg rolling festival at the Capitol Building in 1814. It was discontinued in 1877 to preserve the new lawn. President and First Lady Hayes brought the Easter Egg rolling contest back and moved it to the White House where it has been celebrated with many administrations. The decorating of Easter Eggs is done world wide, in Macedonia the eggs are “etched” with dyes and wax. The most (Continued on Page 2)

The History of the Easter Egg (Continued from Cover Page) famous and elaborate eggs were done by Russian jeweler Peter Carl Faberge. The 57 eggs by Faberge were made of silver, gold and jewels. Ukrainian artisans are famous for the “Pksanky” style of scrolled or written design. Pennsylvania Dutch used calico cloth and coils to create interesting shapes around the egg. Although, the boiled egg does not gain any favor as the days go by, many use the old Easter eggs to incorporate them into culinary wonders such as egg salad with capers and olives, Indian Eggs served with a curried white sauce, cabbage and mushroom pie or the popular pub grub of pickled eggs. The least favorite is the Scotch egg where the hard boiled egg is wrapped in ground beef/sausage, breaded and deep fried. Once this glorious delight is cooked it is spilt open and served with tomato sauce. If you are still engaged in post holiday hard boiled eggs perhaps you may like tarragon brie sauce over the hard boiled eggs or a pate made with egg, nut and mushrooms.

Easter Egg Games

At the White House, the eggs are carried on a wooden spoon on a set course. In Germany eggs are rolled down a track of sticks and Denmark the egg that travels down a grassy area the furthest rolled egg wins. Egyptian children bowl red and yellow eggs toward a row of eggs and whoever cracks one egg wins them all. United Kingdom participates in “pace-egging” that comes from the Old English word of “Pasch” meaning Passover. Pace-egging is when the people trick or treat for eggs.

Vista Oaks Although, April can be a taxing time of year, it still presents a great opportunity to return your garden to its upmost from the winter dormancy. • Weeds- Cool weather weeds are still around with the onset of warm weather weeds. Do not let them get out of control. To spot treat a weed it is suggested to cut out the top and bottom of a milk container. Place the container over the plant and spray the weed. • Lawns- April can be one of the driest months in the year, though the mild weather keeps the grass from becoming too destressed. Start watering your lawn if rain is not forecasted within 5 days. It is still recommended to use a weed control aid or herbicide to prevent broadleaf weeds such as dandelions from taking over your lawn. Fertilizing should be done towards the end of the month. Also, gas up and service your lawn mower. The grass should be ready for mowing. • Perennials- Time is good to continue planting perennials, however it is

APRIL GARDENING recommended to plant the larger plants. Watering is important, especially “deep watering” if sufficient rain does not fall. This will aid the roots in becoming more stable and drought resistant in the summer. Look out for insects such as caterpillars and beetles chewing holes in leaves and aphids. Powdery mildew is a common disease that may attack ornamentals. • Roses- Watering is key this month. Make sure the soil is moistened at least 5 to 6 inches down. If you have a sprinkler system, the amount of water used should be 1 to 1 ½ inches per week. Soaker hoses are recommended and should be placed about 6 inches from the plant. 3 to 4 inches of mulch will reduce the amount of water needed. Please fertilize your roses if you did not do so March. Deadhead faded flowers regularly by cutting the stems back to the first or second five leaflet leaf. • Shrubs- Continue to plant shrubs from containers, and balled/burlapped shrubs should be planted by early April. Shrubs can

be finicky and require the proper amount of sun, shade and water. Make sure the soil is kept moist. If a plant is not doing well, consider moving it. Since most of the shrub’s growth is done in April and May, fertilize with extra nutrients during this period. If you are happy with the size, color and vigor of the shrub it is okay to not fertilize. Pruning shrubs in to decorative shapes should be done now with “by-pass” pruners. • Trees- Should be pruned to remove any freeze damage. Continue to water your trees. Newly planted trees respond best to a hose placed a few inches from the trunk and have the water run at a trickle for about 30 to 45 minutes, once a week. • Houseplants- Most houseplants should be cleaned this month. Use caution when moving indoor plants outside. Orchids enjoy moving outside for the summer. The excellent light, air circulation and nighttime temperature drop encourages strong healthy growth and increase the chances of plant blooming.
